If you were to glance at the new pure electric Honda e:Ny1 across a crowded carpark, you could be forgiven for thinking that it just looks like the familiar, petrol-powered Honda HR-V in a slightly futuristic hat.
But Honda would like you to think of the e:Ny1 as a stylish, dynamic little SUV that’s absolutely going to appeal to hip young things. Who don’t mind telling people that the drive a car with a name like a postcode.
Honda already has an electric car in the shape of the glorious Honda e, but that super-stylish electric city car costs a billion pounds and has the range of an unfit person’s bicycle (actually £36,920 and 137 miles, Ed)
The e:Ny1 is much more mainstream. It’s a five-seat electric SUV that’s not big and not small, with styling that’s neatly conservative and fine-but-not stand-out everything else. Honda themselves say its rivals are the best selling Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro EV, although the pricing is actually closer to another big seller - the Tesla Model Y. But more of that in the pricing section later.
Join Nicola as drives the Honda e:Ny1 for the first time. Are you a fan of Honda's newcomer? Will you be choosing one? Let us know in the comments below.

It’s a HR-V with a battery bolted on underneath ………. you can see it !!
It would probably been decent if it came out 4-5 years ago. Now it’s just mediocre and way too expensive. One of the largest motoring magazines here in Norway gave it the worst reveiw I’ve seen in years as well. This just smells compliance car, and should be judged as one. Just sad to see what Honda has become, even if the e was a fresh and cool.
and 20k £ maximum price
@@nesvarbu6964 aucun constructeur n'arrive à 20k
What where the problems? Mainly the price or something else’s?
In Germany I could get one for 31.500
@@user-cy9jr9gt2f Same in Dk, got one for the missus, 100 % homecharge here, the main issue was no heatpump and slow fast charging.
The pricing of some of these vehicles is ludicrous. If we are serious about the adoption of new forms of personal transport, they have to be more affordable.
automakers will only learn once they stay on the lot for a period of time, it's happening slowly, but dealers/manufacturers are having trouble letting go after lining their pockets over the past couple of years.
Cars are not a new form of personal transport.
Hear, Hear - the price of most electric cars are WAY TO EXPENSIVE for most of us!
I totally agree, it’s the main barrier to entry for me - I’ve just watched a review of the upcoming Fisker Ocean and that starts at pretty much a full £10,000 less than this car, and the range is better. If a startup can produce what looks like a very decent car at that price, why can’t established manufacturers do the same.
What are you talking about? You buy a gas car and after 10 years depending on mpg you’ll be paying around $30k for gas. A EV cost about $50 a month of electricity and you’ll be paying $6k in 10 years. So your $30k gas car cost about $60k+ in 10 years. EV’s you don’t do oil change, smog check or change your break only after over 100k miles. Plus you save all those times fueling up your car with a charger at home. EV’s save you time and money and it drives so much better than ice cars. So basically your ICE cost the same as an EV in 10 years and you just don’t know it yet and the longer you keep your ice car the more it’ll cost more than an EV.
For a £45k car to simply be 'adequate' is NUTS...!
It may sell to the Honda-faithful, but to anyone else, they'll simply look elsewhere, I imagine... 🤔
Same story with the Honda E. It sounded good if it wasn't for the ludicrous price...
@@surturiel The Honda E wasn't that good even without considering the price. The only single phase charging EV I know of.

Right now in the UK the Tesla Model Y is £5 cheaper!!! (the 3 over £2k cheaper)
More range, more space, way faster and the charging network. Unless the PCP deal is amazing how many do they think they can sell.
Bit it's not as big and ugly as a Tesla.
Yep, not a big mark up to get a much nicer looking Honda!

That’s not great.
Yes, reality bites! Honda is too expensive and late to the game.

I just checked the introduction price on Honda Norway website. It is kr 359900 ( approx 27500 GBP). So the question you need to be asking is why it is around 45000 GBP in the UK.

Probably Brexit 😂

One pedal driving so satisfying on my Nissan Leaf that its main reason why I did not change my car yet. So sad that on market only few cars have one pedal driving, its so game changer.
Tesla has one pedal drive

It’s a Chinese GAC aion with a Honda badge , it’s built in China and was created by GAC in collaboration with GM
Completely false. This car has nothing to do with GAC Aion. it is indeed made in China though.
So The Chinese are showing Japan how to make a decent EV? Can’t do any harm…
All these Japanese makers are desperately ill prepared for EV manufacture and have been leaning on their 50% Chinese partnerships to make EVs for them under their brand name. Toyota has been poisoning Japanese auto makers with this attitude for the last decade and its beginning to seriously hurt them.
@@drxymthe 'move to hydrogen' was a Japanese government policy. Toyota, being the largest car maker by far, simply progressed more with the concept. Although I think Honda were first with the FCX Clarity around 2008? 🤔
The Japanese need to ramp up battery production - although Panasonic have a head start as they were working with Tesla.
The reason Japanese industry has moved into other Asian countries is twofold - saving on costs, it's cheaper to make outside Japan and staff. The Japanese are a rapidly aging population, so it's hard to find the right people there!
Didn't you know that .phone Also made in China ???
Any review by Nicola is always a pleasure. She’s got such a unique and fun approach, great sense of humour. Brilliant. As for the car… meh 😒
First knew her on Red Bull podcast!
I love the one pedal driving on my Kia E-Niro. It feels so good to know you can drive and regenerate as much energy as possible when slowing down. This car is again too expensive. It seems all current ICE manufacturers charge a silly amount for an EV.
The brake pedal on the Honda will always use regeneration, so it's not less efficient. Just not with one pedal. And it's easier to coast this way, which is even more efficient.
Based on how long these cars take to design, develop and build, I wonder if manufactures lose touch of where the market competition sits, before it’s even launched.
A few examples here:
1) charging speeds - Adequate at best and 2) Price - too expensive for the majority of people who are considering it’s rivals.
This car may have seemed really accomplished 2 years ago, but now, it’s difficult to see why anyone would buy it - I feel the PCP marketing department have their work cut out.
I just think the reality is Tesla had such a damn headstart and no one thought the EV market would explode this quickly. But every manufacturer is stressing the fuck trying to get something out of the door.
It will be interesting to see what comes out in the coming years, talk about a paradigm shift and opportunity for any manufacturer.
They’re doing £0 deposit and £179 a month now. £16,000 honda finance contribution. Hence why i’m watching this video 😂
@@corzaa0148 ha! Thats insane 😅
One pedal driving... love it. Won't buy a car without it.
Good review. Despite some of you identifying some of its faults it still looks and seems to works better than the 'refreshed' VW ID3.
For what it is and how it does it, it's too expensive. Better options available IMO.
Interesting review Nicola but after 3 months ownership my BYD Atto3 is still at the top of the list. Great value and the comforting knowledge that it has the LFP battery.
Just you wait until the rust starts. Galvanising is poor. Even rusts in Australia. Google John Cadogan.

Isn't there a 1 pedal button that you need to press b4 you use the paddles? Like the e
I think Toyota & Honda are still making compliance cars. After all, Honda are the royalty of smaller ICE. Not that they’re better than other ICE makers but they do make more than anyone else. And for £5 less, you can buy a Tesla Model Y. Which has a very big boot with the seats up and a dolphin swallowing boot with the rear seats folded. It’ll accelerate a second quicker, can charger faster for longer and even in base spec. has a greater range.

Enjoyable, informative presentation. Odd no one pedal driving. For me, Kia Niro EV is better thought out, though not on an EV specific platform
That really shows how poor this car is, Kia's mix power train platform is better!
I don't think this is an ev specific platform either
After four years of one pedal driving, I never want to have a car without again.
Is it bigger than the new little Volvo? I think the full spec Volvo xc30 would be better than this, for the same price or less even if it's a touch smaller. Will you do some comparison vids again?
I agree. I love 1 pedal driving.
Lack of 1 pedal driving is a total deal killer for me.
Get a dodgem car then
Honda's way of doing things is different. Historically, they don't jump on trends until after everybody else has, and then they bring something cautious to market that is acceptable but flawed, and then they come back with the next model and blow everyone out of the water. They do play the long game.
Hi is there any motor noise while you were driving ?
I think its a lot classier than a Tesla Model 3 and being a Honda it will be a lot better built too and at least in the Honda you get a dash and an info screen behind the steering wheel unlike in a Tesla where you get neither. Loved how the front part hiding the plug rotates thats classy and clever and love the new Honda badge too. Yes the price is s bit high but thats the way the market has gone for caes unfortunately. Any idea what tge name stands foe like the e is obviously for electric but what about the rest of it?
"Anyone"?
Wow that price sheesh
Thank you for the video 👍🏻
I never knew about this car, let alone it having an american V12. Too bad this never went into production. Such a sweet ride 🤍💙🤍
One pedal driving is great in my Bolt.
So, compared to an Astra electric? Do you want to like it too? Isn’t the Astra better?
Loved your review (and you as a reviewer, Nicola!) of the e:Ny1. Like you, as I heard your description of it and the pros and cons, I came to a similar conclusion, save for the fact that it lacked physical buttons for the center console control panel (me and touchscreens don't work well together!) and frankly the placement of it would be a major impediment of my line of sight while driving it. It should've been placed a bit lower - or have the option to adjust it so that you'd be able to have a clear view of the road ahead of you.
Just out of curiosity, Nicola...how tall are you? You mentioned having plenty of room in the back seat, but without mentioning your height it made me wonder if I'd be afforded that same room (as I'm just shy of 6 feet tall), or would I look like a giant cramped in that space. Finally, this vehicle (like many EVs) suffers from the same pricey problem - it's made out of "unobtainum" with a mixture of "cantaffordium". 45K British Pounds for that? Sorry, wouldn't be able to get one. :(
Thanks for the great video (you look gorgeous, btw!), Nicola! (hugs)
It's no Fisker Ocean. You can spend less for more car that is loads cooler. If you are trading in a Mazda MX 30, this is a step up, for everyone else, other EV's do more for less money.
The i-pedal mode on my Niro EV4 is brilliant. Took a bit of getting used to (first BEV I’ve had) but now use it everywhere except on the open road where the adaptive cruise control is also superb.
So the e - just over £30k at launch, now sub £20k on the used market - wasn't mass market, but a ~£45k model *is*? Sure, many Honda dealers worked hard not to sell the e, meaning there's less than 2k on UK roads, which is a shame. Oh and the e has a really good 1 pedal mode which I'm really surprised hasn't been retained as much of the switch gear looks identical (you access it via a specific button by the gear selectors on the centre console, not via the paddles).
a lot of lame compisons made here. also comparing it to model 3 when the model Y is the same price as this!
how much is the stealership mark up?
Thanks heaps for the kms!! I’m beyond excited as I placed my order on the weekend for a Polestar 2 long-range, single-motor RWD that gets 650km. That’s 400 miles 😉
With the Volvos on tests they only do about 66% of the claimed range.
@@pb5x5 yrah no liar go suck off honda
Thank Nicola for the review. At the beginning, I thought the review is about Honda eNS1. I have Honda eNS1 since 4 months. Both cars are identical in everything. Only one thing found different. The charging ports. in eNS1 charging ports are in horizontal position while I noticed that it's vertical in the eNY1. Nothing more at all. May be only price is higher there in UK due to taxes. in UAE the prices are between GBP 18000 - 22000. By the way, I hope to hear/read a technical opinion on the location of the charging ports ! is it smart to place it in the most prone place to collisions and accidents ! especially that anti crash system can be disabled. Thanks again.
I am also in UAE and thinking to buy ENS1. Hows your experience driving that car?
Lovely looking car & well presented albeit at a hefty price 👍
If you are driving constantly in traffic jam, one pedal meight be ok but on empty roads it's not good, shift pedals are much better. You can not compare Tesla pee with this premium vehicle..
Given me a 250mile range Honda e and i'll buy it tomorrow.
I need to occasionally commute to Manchester, ideally i'd like to be there and back without worry about charging as ICE vehicles like to park in the spaces in my multistorey. Plus quite often have to take divisions home, the current range would have me falling short a mile from home.
But i love the car.
I don’t feel that the competition are terribly worried about this…
Love the brand. 7.6 seems a little sluggish to me. One-pedal driving has become a requirement since I got the Chevy Bolt.
I thought one of the great benefits of an ev was greater interior space and shorter overhangs; but these are longer than their ice cars?
If i'm not at the car, I expect to check on an app to find out the charging state, not to look across the car park at flashing LEDs on the car.
Why is the range still do disappointedly low, at barely over 400km. My 4 year old 2019 Kona EV has 480km (regularly over 500km on real life during summers). I would have expected EVs to now have 500-600km range, especially for a family size car (I don't mind if a small city car has less range, but with this size, you'd expect to regularly travel out of town)
energy density: the available floorplan only gives a limited volume of battery, and the Li-based chemistry (solid-state are still maybe 8-10 years from price equality) is reaching the upper end of it's bulk 'battery' power density. +50% range obviously =+ 50% more voluminous battery, = increased height or width or length or all 3. i.e. bigger. So a trade-off. Then there's mass and battery cost... and how often do people actually drive 300+ miles in one hit?
@@jesflynn4048 in my case, a Big battery is not just useful for long distances. I have solar panels, so I find it practical to have a big enough battery to allow me to charge with the sun when there are sunny days and go on without charging for a few days when the sky is gray.
This being said, my remark was more in the sense that I'm just surprised that the range has not progressed much in 5 years (compared to my "old" Kona) , while this is probably one of the main (if not the main) point of concern for new people purchasing EVs. Just look at the mazda MX30. In theory, its range, even though small, is sufficient for the average daily use. But its sales is just disastrous and they are stopping its production.
3 things I don't like: small boot space, gear selector, charging speed. 3 things I like: design inside and outside, back seat space, charge socket placement
How much is the new Kona EV (2024 model)? It has V2L too (does the Honda?).
One-pedal driving mode in our Bolt EUV is awesome! My husband loves it.
I love the one pedal driving in the Tesla Model 3. I use the brake pedal so rarely and berate myself for not anticipating the traffic well enough if I have to :D Honestly I wouldn't buy a car that didn't have this feature.
Be careful that you will not get an expensive breake repair if you almost never touch the breakes.
One pedal driving is not very efficient. Atto 3 system is more efficient.
Almost competitive with a Chevy Bolt that came out in 2017 and a fraction of the price (US)
My thoughts exactly!
Thanks for the video! It seems Honda is starting very slowly on the EV segment. The charging port at the front is not a good idea given the front and rear tend to be the areas most prone to damage (accidents). Repairs may become even more costly... The interior looks nice but of course simple/bare. Definitely a utilitarian vehicle that should be offered at an attractive price point. Honda really needs to offer it at enticing prices. As is I can see it will be a total failure... Then they can say "nobody wants" an electric car... Lame!!!! NOTE: The excuse about low acceleration/torque is RIDICULOUS!!! (not your fault of course)
Agree
Looking for the main selling point, the main differentiator from other brands. You seem to be focusing on all of the branding concerns. What about the compelling features??
How long does it take to chsrge it ?
Personally I find 1 pedal driving is over-hyped. I think it also encourages you drive too aggressively/not efficiently, a bit like hopping from accelerator to brake all the time in an ICE car. Every time regen is engaged you're essentially losing energy converting kinetic to electrical energy. The most efficient way to drive is to anticipate as much as possible and use as little regen as possible.
Is that back arm rest broken?
Cannot see this ever becoming the favorite chariot of the over 80’s that Jazz is
Love from India. We are eagerly waiting to launch in India. Very clean and futuristic design. ❤ Honda
I can't see they'll sell any at that price. Maybe £35k might swing it for a lot of people, but this is madness. I wonder what the leasing companies will think of the residual values too.
Is it too early to predict the first major manufacturer to fail due to the switch away from combustion? On this evidence, my guess would be Honda.
Earlier up in the year it was reported this car would cost about £30,000. Here’s a quote from a publication in May: The Honda e:Ny1 will arrive in the coming months in Europe. The automaker did not reveal pricing, but UK media report the electric crossover will have a starting price of around $37,500 (30,000 pounds) in Britain. So are we being ripped off in the UK ?. PS I’ve read it’s much cheaper to buy too in Norway and elsewhere too!
in china the ens1 is the same car as this but i found them at 18k usd or 20kusd with all the options but its basically this car but for the chinese which make sense because honda takes care of its own.
but it makes me want to try to get one of those instead.
@@peak3590 The price differential is unjustified. I appreciate there are shipping costs involved and these cars are made in China but £30,000 is 38,000 USD. That’s about half the price. It’s a good car and Honda are extremely reliable. They will struggle to sell them here given we are in a cost of living crisis and there are other options available such as the new Volvo EV which comes in cheaper.
I will post the other opinion. I don't like to one pedal drive. its a jerky ride especially for the passenger and I think it is wise to use the brake pedal at every turn so that you keep trainig your brain to an automatic muscle response to press the brake pedal in an emergency. luckily my kona regenerates just as well on the brake pedal so my choice doesn't effect the range.
Wow. Same price model 3 with all the benefits, £7k more and MY with many more miles more space and SC network. And the Volvo XC30 is £10k cheaper in base spec and same price in top spec with at least 50 more miles range (albeit smaller).
How does it compare to a Fisker ocean?
I like this reviewer 😄🥰
Yes! One-pedal driving is an absolute necessity. And the fact what they DO have shuts off right away is wrong. And then...it's simply too expensive.
No one pedal is terrible. Even following dumbasses with tesla's doing one pedal, they are slowing down yet the fucking brakes lights dont come on to show they are slowing down
2019 Nissan Leaf SL, I LOVE ONE PEDAL driving, live in the city and makes it easier getting around.
My gripe with a lot of EVs is how short they are. The HR-V is only 63.4 inches tall. 5 inches shorter than my Forester. The EV6 is even lower (60.8") Having a high floor because the batteries are below them and a low roof means not enough cargo space. There is no way a 42" dog crate would fit in the back. Considering Honda sells more than twice as many CR-V than HR-V in America it is baffling that they didn't electrify the CR-V first, regardless of whatever silly alpha-numeric jumble they use.
I'll go for a polestar 2 standard range instead of the Honda.
And I do love one pedal driving in my kona electric.
First thing I noticed was how low the battery hangs below the side body panels (rocker panels), looks just like any other million on the road, was hoping for much better from Honda.
It looks like a portly Jack Russel terrier. 😂
U can call it the "anyone", like a vehicle for anyone ? I think it's one for me, or as u say good enough for me. Yea, u get a T3 but for this money. I like the Honda "anyone" more and it's higher sitting. Btw, it's from Dongfeng Honda in China. Thanks for a good video and take care
For that money you can get an Ioniq 5. And there's absolutely no comparison there: the 5 is a far, far superior automobile.
And a lot bigger for the same money.

I like it, but… that charging rate is pitiful, the cargo space is minimal, and the regen inadequate. C'mon, Honda: one-pedal driving is now a must. Gotta say: after 5 years in my Model 3, I'm growing increasingly fed up and sick of having to access functions through multiple screens on a touchscreen.
The weak GBP makes all EVs expensive in the UK. And all EVs should have one-pedal driving.
SUVs aren't mainstream. They are basically minibuses. Far too big for many towns. Mobile traffic jams in fact.
Like many legacy manufacturers you kind of assume they are actively looking to NOT sell EV’s by pricing them at stupid levels so they can then claim there is no customer demand
78kw... my 2015 Model S starts at 115kw and goes all the way to around 70kw until about 65-70% 78kw is just s€%&. This is one step up from an MX30 EV. The real range is not going to be more than 350kms at 100%. The reason it doesn't cone to a full stop is because of the induction motor. Only cars with a permanent magnetic one can do that.
I see a Nicola review, I click. Thems the rules. Oh, yes, one pedal driving all the way. Love the way my Polestar 2 does that!
If it is like my Honda E there is a specific button to press that activates full regenerative braking.
I do hate those big vertical screens. If they are going to go big, go horizontal.
Lovely car, lovely presentation and review. I adore my 2017 Civic Sport, if I ever switch to electric, it will probably be one of these new Honda EVs!
Fabulous reviews by this reveiwer. Her sense of humor is perfect, being American if I let down my concentration I could miss out. The name sounding like an address, I first saw the notice for this car back in February, I thought weird name. Kona ok, Model Y ok. Inonic 5 ok, e:Ny1 🤔 I drive a 2023 HRV got it in May just after I saw the notice for this all electric. The reveiw helped me since I haven't seen many Honda EVs around, in the land of German cars (and the already huge selection of electrics).
That part about more electric cars coming from Honda, 10 more? I like the idea, but I agree that the $52,000 price is a little high, but that's the going rate for most of the other electric cars (as I've mentioned). The Honda e is too small in the back seat, good for driving short distances and the front , my slightly taller wife is very comfortable (almost 6ft tall). We want a electric Jazz. Honda Germany is having a power day on the 28th. I would still like to see this car mainly for ideas. thanks for the review.
Is it coming with 'Honda Magic Seats'?
One pedal driving is a must. I've been driving with BMW i3 and you barely have to touch the brake.
I was planning to buy one as a garden ornament, but then I heard about the price.
Great and infiormativ review. When it comes to one-pedal driving I personall dont like it. It is tiny less efficient than coasting/adaptive regen/blended brakes. In iaddition it is less comfortable to need to keep the foot on the accellorator. With adaptive regen you can just remove the foot and the car will adjust the needed regen. (Like Audi and other does )
Fun review!
I am happy with my £13,000 2 year old Zoe 50 135, the car makers have got the price wrong again
Very nice but the pricing is just too high considering the competition at similar range and quality.
Exactly the same issue like with H-RV... nice, but the price.... they made the same mistake twice :D
Struggling to think why anyone would choose this over the ioniq 5 for the same price
How does such a large battery give such a small range? The jeep avenger does 250 miles with a 20% smaller battery and surely they're similar sized cars
The jeep is smaller
So many new cars that will fit that 'liked it, until I heard about the price' and I am left wondering what these might cost second-hand, after someone else takes the hit on what must be quite high levels of depreciation (now the over inflated second hand values are starting to return to normal as supplies of new cars improves).
Might be a good topic to talk about in general, along with looking at the best ways to finance such vehicles - or whether to just wait for an ex-demo model to come up, and save a packet for a nearly new car. At the moment, so many likeable cars are simply not going to get sold.
For a bit more you have an IONIQ5, you get much more money for your car (I'd never buy a Elon Musk car).
One pedal driving is great. Every electric car should have it.
It should be called Honda why buy1 😂
