Thank you for sharing , I’m starting OTA school this semester and been looking for more videos on OTA . You should do more videos of a day in the life of OTA or some OTA school tips!
Thank you so much for this video! I’m in my first semester of OTA school and I’m so overwhelmed. 😭 I love seeing black women in the Occupational Therapy field. It’s gives me so much hope ❤️
This was excellent! Schools should have you go in on "career day" to explain your job because I'm certain there are a lot of kids who would benefit from your great way of explaining what you do because I know when I was in school, I never had heard of an OT or an OTA.
Thank you for the video! I’m 28 about to be 29 and am scared. I want to do this but have always struggles with school. But 50 to 60 along with how many people you help sounds much better than being an Instacart employee the rest of my life. This video is gold!
Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm in my 30s and have really come to dislike my current career in telecommunications. I've been told that COTA would suit my personality and talents, but I'm nervous about the leap. Obviously, I'm Googling everything I can while I take some prerequisite college courses. You are so right! There is not much discussion about COTA life. Your input is so valuable.
Jen Gasaway thank you so much! And definitely make the leap if you’re not satisfied. This field is so rewarding both emotionally and financially. Go for it! ☺️
I was an OTA, now I am studying my MSc to become a qualified OT. I would say go for the degree. As an OTA you can not move past a certain pay scale (here in the U.K. anyway) not sure about the states. But there is more to OT than just assessments. The World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) enables you to work anywhere in the world, the pay/ career progression is endless, and you can open your own OT business in your field of specialism. Definitely aim higher, great video, I wish you so much success!
Hi😅 I’m in the UK also. I’m trying to switch to occupational therapy here. I already have a degree in Business administration. Would you advise i take another bachelors degree in OT or just get a masters in OT?
Loved your video. Especially, when you revealed your an Independent Contractor working as your own Boss. That's the road I'm looking at taking. I was a Licensed Massage Therapist for 18 years. I'll be going my local community college for OTA Fall 2024. I will recommend your videos to other students. Thank you for answering questions for us. ❤
I'm doing a mid-life career change into occupational therapy. After a bad car accident I became well-acquainted as a patient with both physical and occupational therapy. Later, seeing my grandpa struggle with rheumatoid arthritis and work with an OT who specialized in hand therapy was really impactful. He was able to do his hobbies again. It really gave him his life back! I'm about to finish my pre-reqs and apply to OTA school. As an OTA, do you think I'll be able to work specifically with those who have hand issues (stroke patients, arthritis, etc)? Also, do you think you could lead us into how to set up business as a subcontractor?
Wow those are some great questions. I'm 39 years old and moving forward with working as an occupational therapy assistant. After working as an direct support worker for almost 20 years in the developmental disabilities industry
Found your page today trying to look up information about this kind of career path. SOOO helpful, thank you so much! I had known a little bit but having true insight from someone is fantastic
Thank you for this video. I was a COTA in the geriatric setting for 15 years and have been in the school setting going on 3 years now. Your right, there isn’t enough videos about the work of a cota. It is a rewarding job but I will say this also, It’s not for everyone. While the money is great it is a hard job. Both physically and mentally. With that being said in my 18 years of work I have never been without a job and have always had as much extra (PRN) work as I wanted. Thanks again for this video. Look forward to more. 😊
JESSICA BURLESON it makes me so happy to hear that you still have such a fruitful career even after 18 years in the field. May you continue to enjoy your work and thank you for all the work you do ☺️✨
Thank you SO MUCH!! I have been researching OTA, but so far it has been difficult to get a good picture of the profession! This has helped tremendously.
I really appreciate this video because I’ve been trying to find away to go into PTA/OTA and I really have such a big love for physical rehabilitation to be able to help someone to progress and to see it. My love never changed for it but some things were required for the school I wanted to go to but it was just so draining I tried but never got in for my last straw I did the test that needed to done to get accepted and got waitlisted. During the few years of trying I wanted to do Massage therapy but that drained me even more and sadly failed one of the major class. But now I see myself going back to this career theres just something about it. I’m masking the decision to apply to another school and I pray that all goes well. THANK YOU GIRL YOU MADE ME REALIZE HOW MUCH MORE I WANT THIS.
Thank you so much for uploading this. I just graduated from my OTA program and taking my state boards next month! Hope you upload more about your experiences as a COTA.
Thank you for doing this! I'm a massage therapist considering becoming an OTA. As someone that worked as a independent contractor doing massage I worked as an independent contractor. There ups and downs to both sides. Just depending on what you want. Me personally wanted benefits with my job but as an OTA you probably can make more being an independent contractor.
Thank you this is wonderful! I appreciate your effort to put this info out there it is so helpful for people who are just starting. Thinking about becoming a COTA or getting into BCaBA (occupational vs behavioral therapy assistants) still deciding but honestly COTA sounds more appealing and fulfilling. Glad you are enjoying this career path! Bless
Finally a video on COTAs! There are so many for nursing. When I attended an orientation for OT there were 2 of us. The nursing program had nearly 100. With that being said, after having done some school work for entry nursing, I found there was so much emphasis on medicine dosages and medicine memorizing. I am wondering if there any math in COTA or OT training? What are clinical hours like? Thank you for posting! This is the first video I've seen from you. :)
This video was very helpful as I am looking to make a major career change. I tried looking for a in depth explanation on OTAs but was unable to get a decent explanation. Thank you.
I feel it! I’ve been out of high school for a little over two years now, and I was so confused on what I wanted to do. I think I finally found something! I’m so jealous of the people that know what they want to do right away. It makes it feel like I’m always late for something lol.
Thank you for sharing there’s not enough information on COTAs! I’m struggling between choosing OT & OTA since I already have a bachelors degree. I was wondering if you can go over more about the process of becoming an OTA? what program you did and why you chose it? Thanks!
Sophia, you are wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing this information. The overview of the field and the salary info was much appreciated, especially since I am currently in OTA school and was wondering some of these things myself. Great job and good luck on your endeavors!
Thank you so much for recording and sharing this video, I've been looking for something like this because I want to get into a OTA programs, but couldn't find enough information about it. It touches all bases as to the questions I had. Have a lovely day and thanks again! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love your channel… you’re filling a huge gap in information. I’m starting my second year of the program and everything I’ve read online scares me about the market.
I'm looking to work in Pediatrics only, Eventually as an OTA, is it harder to get into Pediatrics. I've mostly heard about work you mentioned. My son has Developmental delays and receives OT, and it has really sparked my intrestest.
I start in January im so excited but so nervous it's been a while since I've been in school. I've been a Independent Hairstylist for 10 years. Business is not what it used to be this will be a second career and i'm age 36. Thank you so much for your videos, I can definitely see myself in business doing this🙂. I'm curious to know how difficult the program is in your opinion.
To be honest, the first semester wasn’t bad the second semester got a little difficult cause the classes were just a bit more complex but it was all still super manageable. I was working full time while being in the program and it all worked out. You got this and best of luck to you ❤️
Just found your channel and I greatly appreciate all the info. I’m currently taking my prerequisite and I was on the fence about this career choice. But now I just hope to qualify for the COTA program. Thanks again!
can you do a video on men becoming OTAs?? I have heard some not so wonderful stories about how difficult it can be as opposed to females. Considering OTA myself, but would love to have this topic covered if possible?
OT's have more than twice as many years of college compared to COTA. The COTA is the ONLY person who can treat outside of a OT, however all evaluations, discharges, modifications, are done by OT. COTA's are always supervised by OT's. I have met so many FABULOUS experienced COTAS... obviously more skilled than entry level OT's however the technical and detailed knowledge of motion, neuroanatomy, Kinesiology and function of OT's New graduates out of Masters programs very very high. Much higher than COTA, but of course that's what really separates the two the additional 3 years of college. Similar can be said for PA's versus MD's.
Thank you for the video, it was really helpful! Would you be able to go more into depth about the process of schooling, getting licensed, all the requirements needed to become an OTA? What exactly do you need to know and be trained in before you can become an OTA?
Thank you so much. I am in my first semester in OTA school. This information was so helpful. Subscribing can't wait to check out the rest of the videos.
thank you for this video I'm currently taking classes leading up to my OTA classes and I couldn't find any videos about OTA if possible can you please do more videos like this
Claudia B. , I’ve been a COTA for 15 years. I’ve not heard about COTA’s being phased out. As soon as you graduate school and pass your boards, you start getting calls from recruiters atleast 2 days a week. I still get emails and calls and I’ve been in the same job for 12 years now.
I heard that about other health professions years ago. I decided not to pursue the training. They did not get phased out and I'm not making that money. Just something to think about but I do see where you're coming from.
Hi! Thank you for posting this . I know it’s been a few years but what was your experience like finding work directly out of college and what was your first salary?
Sophia I just started thinking about OTA. I am currently in the Medical field, like you I wake up every morning driven on helping others.. But at the same time we need to be happy ourselves so I have that Salary based mentality you mentioned toward the end, so thank you for your advice! As far as schooling do you have any advice, recommendations, or ways to find good schools?
Thank you for all the wonderful information! I had no idea you could become an independant cota. This is empowering to know. I am working on getting prerequisites to apply for my local ota program. Thank you!❤️
Thank you for giving your account as an OTA, yes you are right there isn’t much info about us......I’m in the uk and I am an Occupational Therapy Assistant Practitioner which amounts to the same role you have. We are one band below a qualified OT, eg I’m band 4 and they are band 5 when they just qualify. I’m working in the NHS. Do you use MOHOST? 😀💚
This was cool! I needed this girl, I'm thinking about OTA b/c I think the job would be a decent fit for me and the pay is nice. I would love to hear more about how class went for you 😁.
could you explain the steps of becoming a contractor. 1- where did you go for the paper work to start being your own contractor? 2-what is the name of documents to file for becoming your own contractor? which form you use for tax purposes?
Hi Sophia! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. It was very informative! I had a question for you since I am considering making a career change into occupational therapy (coming from a desk job). I have several very good friends in the nursing field, and they constantly are complaining about back issues due to the nature of their job. Are OTA's at risk for injuring their back over the long run? I have a minor back injury I am currently recovering from, and was wondering if this is something I should be aware of entering the field. Thank you so much for your time!
Hoping for more videos about OTA :) any tips or sample management that you do for the clients. How an OTA work in the clinic (So, I can study in advance). Thanks! 🤗 God bless!
Thanks for making this video. How long ago did you finish school? And when you said you have plans to transition in a new career eventually, are you plan on going back to school? Or do you have a generalized degree? I asked because I am stuck between whether I want to transfer my credits to OTA school or transfer to a 4 year university since the degree will strictly say Occupational Therapy Assistant unlike a more diverse degree title.
Hello, I was just commenting because this is exactly where I am right now. I’m stuck on transferring or just going straight for OTA? What did you end up doing? Hope you see this!
The aspect of working as an independent contractor, requires the contractor to be able to work INDEPENDENTLY which means without SUPERVISION. As a COTA you MUST be supervised by an OTR. Unless you are the business owner, and are NOT supervised by an OTR, you shouldn’t be legally able to be hired as an INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR. 🤔There are businesses who desire hiring everyone as independent contractors in order to avoid paying employment taxes, however, the law states that an independent contractor must be able to work independently without supervision or training. That is clearly stated in your licensing practice act that COTAs require supervision.
So actually cotas are allowed to work without the supervision of a director/OTR.That is PTA’s that require constant supervision, which is clearly stated in the licensing practice. Almost every SNF/ home care agency offers independent contractor as an option, im not sure why you are taking the definition of it so literally. Therapists, nurses etc. are allowed to work as independent contractors.
So is being an independent contract therapist different from being PRN in a company? I was a full-time COTA for 7 years and recently became PRN. My company cut out pay 4% beginning of 2021 then another 9% beginning of this year. So i switch to PRN status to maintain a decent rate per hr that is acceptable to me with all of their increasing demands. I've never heard of being an independent contract therapist. How do you go by that making your own "business? "
Hey girl, does being an OTA require a lot of lifting/twisting/bending? Is it manageable? Is it as strenuous as being a nurse? I had a back injury in the past so I just wanted to make sure. Do you have to be cleared of any health restrictions before starting an OTA program? Thanks a lot!
Yes. There is a lot of lifting and bending but no health restrictions to become a COTA. My co worker has severe Cerebral Palsy and she’s actually an OT/R and it didn’t stop her. So I say go for it!
Thank you! This info is super valuable. I have seen job postings talking about per diem pay? Is this the type of independent contractor situation you're referring to?
@@nena_366 It went great, but the job is 90% productivity and I barely got any training. I'm more a fast learner and very confident, so I was okay with treating without any direction, but I needed training on the documentation system. I'm really considering traveling as a new grad, because they are trying to low ball with me the payrate and I would travel for the same conditions, because if we accept low-paying jobs, it messes it up for the rest of us.
I am 42 years old and in tears, I’m finding it’s time for me now after raising my kids to get out there. It’s been years since I have been in school and I’m terrified of feeling less than. Is the schooling for this manageable for somebody who’s barely returning back to school? Also is this work physically possible for someone already in their 40s? 😢Thank you

Ma'kyrah I’m glad you enjoyed this video! Thank you for the feedback and I will definitely create another video for you ❤️
Yes! I’m struggling to find videos, so thank you for devoting your time!☺️.
I realize I'm kinda off topic but do anybody know of a good site to watch newly released tv shows online?
@Crosby Lennon try Flixzone. Just google for it :)
@Crosby Lennon I use Flixzone. You can find it on google :)
Thank you so much for this video! I’m in my first semester of OTA school and I’m so overwhelmed. 😭 I love seeing black women in the Occupational Therapy field. It’s gives me so much hope ❤️

Hey I am thinking about changing my major from Early Childhood Education to an Occupational Therapy assistant
I'm starting school soon for OTA and I'm glad I watched your video. Thank you!
Yes Sophia! More of this! It’s needed, more black girl OT’s!! Very good!
Vania H thank you ❤️ it’s a great field and I wish more people would explore it
Sophia Brooke indeed! With more content like this, it will help increase the awareness of black girls in the medical/science field. It’s so necessary.
@@SophiaBrooke314 yesss! I start classes in January. I love seeing this!!
Hey I’m thinking about massage therapy! Can you tell me the pros and cons of this and if you loved it or not?:)
Yes!! I definitely needed this video! Going to OTA school next year! 🎉🎉
Congratulations girl ☺️
I'm doing a mid-life career change into occupational therapy. After a bad car accident I became well-acquainted as a patient with both physical and occupational therapy. Later, seeing my grandpa struggle with rheumatoid arthritis and work with an OT who specialized in hand therapy was really impactful. He was able to do his hobbies again. It really gave him his life back! I'm about to finish my pre-reqs and apply to OTA school. As an OTA, do you think I'll be able to work specifically with those who have hand issues (stroke patients, arthritis, etc)? Can you do a video on how you find work as an independent contractor? Thank you

Alot of great information Sophia! This gave me a clear understanding of Occupational Therapist & COTA's.

Anytime hun, best of luck to you on your journey ❤️
Thank you for giving your account as an OTA, yes you are right there isn’t much info about us......I’m in the uk and I am an Occupational Therapy Assistant Practitioner which amounts to the same role you have. We are one band below a qualified OT, eg I’m band 4 and they are band 5 when they just qualify. I’m working in the NHS. Do you use MOHOST? 😀💚
This was cool! I needed this girl, I'm thinking about OTA b/c I think the job would be a decent fit for me and the pay is nice. I would love to hear more about how class went for you 😁.
Thank you! And I say go for it, it’s a super rewarding field ☺️
could you explain the steps of becoming a contractor. 1- where did you go for the paper work to start being your own contractor? 2-what is the name of documents to file for becoming your own contractor? which form you use for tax purposes?
I made a video titled how to become an independent contractor. Hope you find it helpful ☺️
thank you so much for such detailed video!!!
This is great! Thank you for making it!
Is being a occupational therapist assistant hard? I have a learning disability and school is hard. Is it hard????

Thank you for sharing Sophia 🙏
thank you for doing this, it helps a lot
Practicing proper body mechanics is key so as long as you do that then you should be fine, but it is a very physically demanding job overall.
Thank you for the information! Appreciate it!
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for making this video very informative.
Thank you for sharing this information. By chance is there a video example of what you can write off? Car, phone etc.
I'm new to your channel and this is great information.
Thank you for this video!
This was so helpful, thanks a lot. I'm looking to study OT as an international student, and currently looking at schools but I'm stuck!
Hey have you decided a program for your degree???
@@saramell1 Hi Mel, I couldn’t get a school.
@@joyishegh oh I’m so sorry, what did you decided to do at the end?
Thank you for doing this video!!!!
Anytime 😊
I didn’t know you could have your own business like that. I like that tax information btw 🙌🏻. Thank you for all the information!
Omg I start my new job tomorrow as a COTA and wanted to know what advice or cheat sheets you think would be helpful for my first day?
Congrats! How did your first day go?
@@nena_366 It went great, but the job is 90% productivity and I barely got any training. I'm more a fast learner and very confident, so I was okay with treating without any direction, but I needed training on the documentation system. I'm really considering traveling as a new grad, because they are trying to low ball with me the payrate and I would travel for the same conditions, because if we accept low-paying jobs, it messes it up for the rest of us.
Thank you so much for the video
Can you do a salary video and how to make the most money as an OTA video ?
I am 42 years old and in tears, I’m finding it’s time for me now after raising my kids to get out there. It’s been years since I have been in school and I’m terrified of feeling less than. Is the schooling for this manageable for somebody who’s barely returning back to school? Also is this work physically possible for someone already in their 40s? 😢Thank you
