Gananoque 1000 Islands ~ Boldt Castle

A gorgeous day out on the boat, cruising through the 1000 Islands and visiting Boldt Castle (located on Heart Island ) which has been beautifully restored.
The castle comes with a sad tale: George C. Boldt commissioned the construction of the castle in late 1899, planning to dedicate it to his wife, Louise, on her birthday -- Valentine's Day 1904, when it was scheduled to be completed (the island had been reshaped using sea walls to resemble the shape of a valentine heart, with the same symbol etched into the castle's plaster, stone, and wrought-iron work), but she died suddenly in January, at the age of 41, just months before the completion of the castle. George Boldt immediately ceased the construction and he never returned to the island. The castle was abandoned until 1977 when the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority took possession of the island and completed construction of the castle - A heartfelt Thank you to Thousand Islands Bridge Authority for saving and preserving Boldt Castle for future generations.

There's even a delightful teeny-tiny mention of Phantom of the Opera ignited by the sight of a very beautiful pipe organ ;)

i recently lost my mother and we buried her with her parents and great grand parents and had the family talking...about our great grandmother Louise Boldt. now we have decided to visit
the castle that Louise's cousin built but dis not finish due to his broken heart of losing his beloved wife.
nice to go see a little of family history ! i believe many of us will be going late June ...early July.
Absolutely CAN'T wait.💙
