The narrator also has vocal fry
Really bad too. It's horrible.
Yeah & she doesn't even know it; even the linguist creaked a little too!
@G. V. Q Had the narrator KEPT her voice in that lowest possible range, it wouldn't be annoying anymore. We all hit it? Most normal people don't hit it at all.
It's from years of doing it. She's done this so long that she does it naturally without thinking. She's probably only recently become conscious about it.
Morgan Freeman made a fortune from it :)
Vocal fry is not something you have, like skin color, but something you do: pretty much like body posture and hand gestures. They become automatic by repetition, but they can be trained. There's a reason why vocal fry is only prevalent in the USA and maybe some smaller areas in the world, but not at all in Europe.
Yes we should.
Very true. I've never heard this in Germany. However, many Germans, both men and women, have this uptalk when explaining things. My girlfriend does it and it drives me nuts sometimes.
@@jjandorliadul by "uptalk" do you mean rising in tone at the end of sentences?
I think it's a vocal disorder and it was made popular by the Kardashians. It's just annoying
@@thoughttickler7315 It was around long before the Kardashians
The trouble is, once noticed, the listener only pays attention to the sound and not the words being said.
indeed!
I have stopped going to the meeting of our HR director. Her vocal fry is the worst.
As a female I find it unbearable. The quacking thing, though - especially when combined with the fry - worse than nails on a blackboard. I actually can't listen to women speak this way.
SAME.
As a foreigner can't stand it at all!
what's the quacking thing?
@@youtubeseagull It's the harshest short "a" sound imaginable combined with a harsh nasal quality. The sound replaces the short vowel sounds - miss becomes mAss, especially becomes AsspAshelly. So hard to explain. Without getting political - AOC has that voice.
I thought it was only me that noticed this "quacking" thing, I'm right with you! And I have only heard women doing it, strangely??
It sounds awful when both men and women do it.
It grates on me like a cheesegrater on knuckles.
Maybe this guy does it, but men don't. Insecure women always have do feel they're being discrimated against. No - this so-called vocal fry, aka 'growling' is specific to women virtually exclusively. It's terribly irritating and I personally would never hire a woman who was so afflicted. I've made acquaintances aware that they do it, and no one has taken offense. Do your acquaintanceships a favor and have the guts to make them aware of this habit. It can be very costly to them..
@@yankee2666 Men do it too, don't be insecure about it, bro. You can wake up in the morning and your voice sounds like this, you have some water and you're fine. No need to be so insecure about it you pretend it's impossible for a complete gender to have a crackly voice. There's actually scientific proof why it happens, and it happens to everyone whether you like it or not, unless you have a very high pitched voice because the higher the pitch the smoother the tone, or you have broken vocal chords, but probably you just don't notice yourself doing it 😂😂
Grow up my man, generalising because of an insecurity just seeks a bit... I'll say unusual.
@@FriendlyHomie What you describe, vocal fry that occurs in the morning or periodically, is not what people find so irritating. It is the exaggerated, ever present usage that comes across as an imitated affectation of the Kardashians. And it would be as irritating to a listener whether or not they were aware of the Kardashian's speech pattern. I agree that men use vocal fry and upspeak also. And I find it more annoying in men. The exception is when it is integrated into their speaking style in a way that it comes off sounding more natural and authentic. Ironically, your comment is the one that comes off as insecure and defensive, not the one to which you replied.

Same. The worst is when people destort the audio of people screaming and freaking out and put that in their videos. They distort the audio for dramatic effect but it becomes unbearable to listen too lol.

It is also the vocal equivelant of biting your nails and picking your nose. It is lazy and slobbish and it sounds gross because it is the sound of moist meat flapping.
It also makes you sound like a moron because intelligent people don't delay speech with sound effects, they speak with confidence.
Very well said
My mother used to say "stop scauting your feet." She was born in Oxfordshire England and I've never been able to find its etymology.

Exactly. Much like face piercings, it's terribly distracting and makes them appear immature.
This is nothing more than a learned habit, and it's use exploded after it became Kim Kardashians trademark. It's grates on my nerves like fingernails on a chalkboard.
Excellent point. And the K's all do it! They didn't start doing it, it's something more recent and it makes them sound like dunderheads or people of super low intelligence.
It's annoying no matter who does it.

As is the linguistics professor. *shudder*
No, I'm afraid that's just her habitual mode. And people keep harping on "lower pitch" to describe vocal fry, but what really causes it in most women is speaking without engaging their diaphragm, not just using a lower register. To be blunt, it's just lazy, non-musical vocalization.
@@paintedjaguar why should people be speaking musically and pleasantly all the time again?
@@infinitechibi1496 I see. You're one of those people who can't be bothered to make the bed or pick up trash or learn which end of a hammer you're supposed to hold onto (language is a tool). Also, "musical" is a technical term in the context of language. People used to actually take classes in both elocution as well as grammar, especially those in the business of vocal communication like actors, broadcasters, lecturers. Because it's a professional thing to do. By the way, Is there something wrong with looking and sounding pleasant?
@@paintedjaguar dude, I'm not stupid thanks. I asked a question and I don't think you really understood what I was asking.
But to awnser what you said near the end, ya know, the part that actually bothered to 'try' and awnser my question, not the part that claimed I didn't have simple common sense, anywho~
Yes, i know certain actors and people at their jobs will change their voice and tone because blah blah reason or other, i dont want this to become a novel.
But I'm asking why should the everyday person, in unprofessional settings have to speak musically and pleasantly to everyone else all the time even when that's not their natural/comfortable/genuine voice.
I get it's professional but I'm talking about non-professional circumstances here.
I was also being somewhat sarcastic when I asked my original question, since I'm not exactly of the mindset that one should change every minute detail about themselves to be more pleasing to others, just feels... Off... Personally speaking.
I find vocal fry very irritating ... and must admit that I notice it a lot more in women than men. It seems particularly prevalent in promo and 'how to' videos (so I guess it's a speech pattern that professional voiceover artists aspire to). For example, in this video (ua-cam.com/video/Hbh_DUcGMlA/v-deo.html) the presenter uses vocal fry as a way to punctuate sentences. Every sentence ends with it. I had to stop watching the video ... even though I was interested in the content. I was focusing on the fry, not the message.
but the woman introducing this video has vocal fry
sandra jenkins She does
The ironic thing is, the woman presenting this is doing exactly that. She's is creaking!!!!?
Being a fad, and therefore intentional, makes it much more difficult to overlook than is a naturally occurring fry.
Exactly, people do seem to forget there are people who naturally fry, some who just - can't naturally fry, and some who put it on and do it intentionally.
There's a lot of reasons people 'fry'.
Some naturally, some due to their surroundings and the way their raised do it unconsciously, and now it's become part of their natural comfortable vocalisations, sometimes people do it because of their overall tone lowering, you just straight up will fry if you lower your tone of voice enough, as long as you're physically capable of it, sometimes it comes out as the result of an accent, which again, furthers the societal, surroundings and experiences point, some do it intentionally.
Either way people need to stop obsessing over a tiny little voice quirk. It's weird.
Hearing vocal fry is like being stabed in the eardrums with screwdrivers.
Do you work the same place I do???🙂🤭
As a Frenchman, I can't stand hearing women talk like that.
Pareil.
Fry IS annoying, but nowhere near as much as upspeak.

@@batlady2343 what the f is “sexy baby speak”
I first heard it on many episodes of House Hunters and it drove me nuts. I can't stand it. And when it's mixed in with uptalk I just wanna scream. I have to say I've heard it in way more women than men. Annoying to say the least.
Men usually have a deep voice, so the vocal fry is not much evident as it gets drowned, whereas with the high pitched female voice it is too evident in contrast.
Generally speaking the women catching flak for using vocal fry are not necessarily being critized for the vocal fry itself. I think it is moreso the abuse and over use of vocal fry while attempting to make themselves look smart that is frowned upon. It's other negative charactaristics and qualities that the speaker is trying to camouflage by using vocal fry that brings all the negative attention. For me it goes on a long list of irritating things people do, right below the use of the word 'like' as a filler.
I'm an old fart, so of course this drives me nuts. I was watching a video not long ago about shopping malls in the 80s. There were a lot of interviews wth girls at the food court, and I was shocked at how much girl speech has change and how slowly we've become accustomed to this, like the frog in the slowly boiling pot. Women used to speak clearly, almost musically, and this is just 40 years ago. It is fingernails on a chalkboard when I hear a professional news presenter talking like a creaky little old lady or fussy little baby girl. Gaaahhh!
I am older and a former singer and I find it the same as you do, irritating beyond belief. I was watching TV today and noticed that the women & men in the commercials are using it all the time. I can barely watch one of my favorite channels, HGTV, anymore due to the number of mostly women using it. I think it has worked it's way into common liguistics over the past 20 years. I found that when I was working and answering phones, people were amazed to see me in person as I sound "youthful" on the phone. Not childish, but a young sounding voice and described as melodius. They mean this as a compliment. I wonder what damage to the voice will happen over time to young adults of today.
@@amygilcrestpeaking of melodious,1970's AM 620, Milwaukee talk show host Gordon Hinkley had one. When I finally saw him, I was blown away, being so much older than my mental picture.
I googled “croak voice” because I have found it very noticeable recently in young women. I got thls video top of the results. So I’m not the only one who has noticed it
It’s a very popular trend that implies ‘you don’t deserve my energy’ or ‘I know I’m right’. At lesst this is how it sounds to me.
It sounds like someone thinks they are much much cooler than they actually are.
The narrator is "frying" throughout the video!
One possible reason women get called out on this more than men, is that women do it four times more frequently than men (Journal of Voice 2014 Mar;28(2):185-90.). However, the producers of this video didn't look into that possibility, and instead - by pointing out that some men also do vocal fry - create the impression that men and women speak that way in equal amounts and with equal frequency, and so create the impression that women are being treated unfairly.
Vocal fry is like listening to nails on a chalkboard...IT'S EXCRUCIATING! I am a woman and I can't tolerate listening to women talk this way. I don't think it's sexist. It's an annoying affectation that is irritating when either sex uses it, but perhaps it's more irritating with higher pitched voices.
What if high pitch creeky sounds are simply more unpleasant to human ears than low pitch creeky sounds (think of a baby crying vs a lion roaring)? Women have a higher pitch voice than men do, so perhaps that's simply the reason why people react more strongly to it. Perhaps it has nothing to do with gender bias?
Women and babies need to be protected, that's why you get woken up more easily by high pitched sounds.
Makes sense
you can confirm this by listening to men with high pitched voices speak. i've noticed a lot of gay guys speak like this and it's just as annoying as it is on women. i think it's also more noticeable with a higher pitched voice and that's why it's annoying. a deeper, lower voice isn't going to have the creak sound as offputting.
A Lion isn’t “creaky”.
So funny that the narrator uses it while talking about it 😀
I don't know what has happened to human voices. I can always tell an American from earlier eras of film as they are so much more eloquent and articulate. Vocal fry has a tone that suggests you haven't even got out of bed following a night of booze, sex and cigarettes, and are too knackered to be capable of normal speech. What makes it worse is that various reality TV shows have made it fashionable. To me it's the equivalent of wearing yesterday's knickers on your head.
Laziness is the answer.
What annoys me as an youtube consumer is not the vocal fry, is more this english affection trend that seems to be the evolution of valley girl/kardashian style of affection where grown up woman (even journalist) speaks in an tone that seems too much full of disdain or disadisfaction of a teenager grown up seeing reality tv. It is this superb undertone that annoys me.
I have a naturally lower voice and when I’m talking quietly especially the fry comes out. It feels more UNnatural to smooth out my voice but yes I don’t have fry usually. But that being said-I don’t even notice vocal fry except for The Kardashians.
I don't really notice it either.
Not unless it's super obvious.
I got a 'fry' too, kinda only really noticed now, that's saying just how subtle 'actual fry' really is, specially if I'm not going out of my way to listen to how people's voices sound so i can judge them over something small and relatively stupid, like what is seemingly popular at the moment, but back to the point, mine don't come out all the time either.
I've got several different voice tones I notice I default to in many different circumstances, some 'fry', some don't.
Most of the more comfortable natural ones 'fry' for me, not a biggie, not like im doing it intentionally, nor am i hurting myself either, unlike popular opinion it seems...
I think people just need to stop obsessing over other people's vocal quirks.
Vocal Fry + Uptalk/ Upspeak + words like Gucci, Spotify, party, etc tortures me!
Lester the vocalisto !
Kardashian too, to me. Can't stand them.
you’re just miserable
Be yourself, or be by yourself, fry and all! Can't stand it in Men or Women! It's like scraping fingers on a chalkboard. I actually have to mute many conversations and Audio and use close captioning because it is too much but I think it's easier if people just use their own voice.
It is so difficult for non English speaker to discern what was being said cos it just turns in creaking sound 😣
Love how the woman professor is doing the same thing....
I noticed that. She doesn't seem to be aware that whilst talking about vocal fry she has mild vocal frrrrrrry
Narrator herself seems to have this affliction as well. In creaky voice the fundamental frequency (number of vibrations) of the vocal folds is so reduced (normally 150-200 Hz for women, much lower for men) that vowels in particular become indistinct. Since air passing through the is also greatly reduced, consonants also become indistinguishable. You can't have comprehensible speech if vowels and consonants are indistinguishable. Put out more air, so speech doesn't become gibberish.
I don't like the sound of fry from anyone, but some women speak at the bottom of their register when they don't want to sound shrill. There is research that we take low voices more seriously, hence fry.
Who else came here to read the comments?
I’m a 60 yr old woman and I’ve tried to speak with vocal but I can’t make my voice do it.
This is a learned habit, for both men and women. Stop trying to make it a "oh women get criticized for everything" thing. As a woman, vocal fry drives me up the wall and makes me wanna scratch my ears out.
This video should be sponsored by Ricola. To get rid of that raspy noise they have in their voices.
I had to work with a girl who not only spoke like this, but that ridiculous up-tone...almost like a question at the end of sentences as well. To make matters worse she was talking non-stop about the planning of her wedding AND just got a new set of acrylic nails that every movement of her hands had to show off. Seriously, I thought I was being punk'd. It was like spending the day with a non-stop scratching chalkboard.
It's so irritating that I mute the TV when I hear it. And women are now flapping their excessively manicured hands around in the air. Horrible. Are we "evolving" into ducks?
I remember Kevin Bacon's character used it in Footloose when he showed up at the rural school. It was his way of attempting to look cool. When he's told they're not allowed to dance... He comes back with "Jump baaack." and it's completly fried. I worked at a video store in the '80s and ran the movie all the time. I loved the music, but every time I heard him say "Jump baaack." AAAAhhh.!
It makes the person sound frivolous and dumb, particularly when combined with the ever present "like."
How does the presenter of this piece not know that she's "Frying???" - Oh the irony! Hilarious!!!
It's surely intentional, given that this whole video is made to try and make us think that vocal fry is not irritating, lazy or something that should be changed, but just one more individual feature like skin color, height or blood type.
Pretty sure that's the point. SHE fries her vocals and is mad people judge her for it.
The video is actually trying to justify and defend vocal fry... Mindboggling
@Aldin There seems to be acceptance (that ties in with woke cultue) that it's evolution, but how can something so unnatural, unattractive & at times inaudible poss' be progress? Is Rhotacism (I overcame) now considered evolution???!
Rod Serling was famous for that vocal fry, even I made fun of it, and he's been dead since 1975.
It's vocal laziness.
It is not laziness. It's a conscious affectation. It requires effort -- at least initially, while adopting the habit. It is also non-natural, therefore, and purposive. That's where things get uncomfortably sticky and complicated. Don't tell the plebs. This little video is a puff-piece that barely manages to purse its lips -- and realizes it's close to quitting time, so wraps it up, and punches out.
It’s actually insecurity. A really “unsure” phone. Everything kinda sounds like a question????
I believe that they think it gives them a more mature sound. @@michaelthibault7930
That's "uptalk". Fry is different... and worse.@@SaraJohnstone91
Yes like here in the UK people say "nuffink" instead of "nothing"; lazy English.
I have never heard of that being a critique of women, but I think there are certain elements with regards to speech that can influence how the thoughts being communicated are received and evaluated. However, I think that is true of both men and women. What counts as a negative quality may change though depending on gender and who prevalent and apparent that particular characteristic is in that person's speech patterns. That has nothing to do with a person's appearance or anything like that though.
I'm sorry, but it's just more pronounced when women do it. Men already have lower voices and the fry blends better. It would be like men making a high-pitched sound while talking. Do men even do it as much? I do not think so. I would love to see a study of exactly what demographics display vocal fry most. I think it's very much a strand and likely limited to a certain area and class of people. Maybe it even lines up with political views or intake of media. These kinds of correlations are interesting to me.
Women get it because they do it way more and for a guy, there's a high chance it is due to either him having a voice crack or his voice being low as a result of puberty, women don't have a voice crack, only about three tones in rare cases, other than that the voice stays the same. Due to this, it it obvious that vocal fry was something trained by certain people in a attempt to fit with the millennial way of talking
It’s annoying when men or women do it, but it does sound more prominent in women. Vocal fry sounds like “lazy speech”; like there is no attempt at projecting the voice. It connotes insecurity. Ladies be confident!! Project your voice, get it out of your throat, and for heavens sake don’t “uptalk”!!
Narrator is fry too , not as bad , but yes fry fry
Communication requires the spreader not to annoy the f out of the listener, I have turned off many programs because of males doing this.
NPR = Champions of fry
Oh my God, YESSSSSSS!!! You hammered that nail spot on!
Usually found in people who do too much talking and not enough hydrating.
Vocal fry is no natural. It's a way of speaking that you choose to do.
I never heard of vocal fry until today, while watching a UA-cam video on another topic. Several commenters were pointing out the male speaker's vocal fry. Male, or female, it's annoying to hear.
Same as someone dragging their feet when they walk. I don’t say anything but it’s like nails in a chalk board for me.
I don’t even think the issue is the vocal fry or the creaky voice, it’s when it’s so commonly combined with the “valley girl accent”. Like the girl at the beginning saying just “fry” with a vocal fry was fine. But I don’t think you can speak every word like that unless you speak with a valley girl accent. And that’s what people don’t like. I can guarantee you that the data is skewed about people not liking “vocal fry” in women because what they actually don’t like is when women sounds like a ditz
It's definitely the accent that makes it annoying. Some people just have vocal fry naturally or because of vocal distortions of their chords.
It usually means they aren’t telling a whole truth. It’s attitude.
Irritating. (but if sick or old, that's diff.)
This is creeping in all over the UK & at worst affected girls are mixing up-speak with fry it's awful. Don't tell me it's ok because men do it; try watching 'Life of Brian' & you'll see how ridiculous it sounds when men try raising their pitch like women speak!
This not about having “your own voice”. Your natural voice does not come out as Vocal Fry.
This is vocal manipulation that often becomes a very bad habit, same as high talking.
It is used to draw attn by people struggling with esteem.
It is unprofessional & speaks volumes about the person’s lack of self confidence.
I have to support a client who’s POC’s are 2 women. One is an extreme/chronic high talker - very hard to stomach. The other frequently engages in Vocal Fry after she warms up and/or feels the need to over-talk others.
Both individuals are toxic personalities, belittling vendors, over-talking others, and 100% apologetic for lousy decision making or unprofessional conduct. No surprise that the low talker roles up to the high talker.
They sit side-by-side.
IMO, these assumed and practiced traits are inherent of underlying, unaddressed psychological problems.
There’s a guy in my class who literally only speaks in vocal fry, and I find it so irritating. Glad to find out I’m not insane.
I'm an English learner. Recently, I watched a Netflix film to learn English, I didn't know why I feel really uncomfortable with the last word when the actress say.

It’s not annoying when it’s done appropriately and in only veery points of the speech pattern. When it’s constant in someone’s speech, is when it becomes grating and obnoxious.
Where did this come from along with ending every sentence with a question mark? It makes them seem so stupid but I don't think they realize it. Who imitates to Kardashians?
this speaker does the vocal fry as well lol
It's mostly women who use vocal fry, and it's an American thing.. I hope it stays there, because it's really annoying to listen to.
In the opposite, it helps on metal vocals, which is SIC
Much more than this, I cannot bear the ‘moronic interrogative’. So ubiquitous in tv and radio. Do these institutions really employ no voice coaches?
If you want you can just let more air out, it's not really hard to readjust. I'm a man but I hated my fry voice because it annoyed even me and readjusted so now I have loud but smooth voice. It's a bad habit to develop, it sounds really awful so critic is completely reasonable because no one likes to hear annoying noises, though some might like it I guess.
I don't notice Vocal Fry in men as much because they naturally have a deeper voice. I really don't want to sound sexist about this but I do find that listening to so many women on the radio and tv who speak with vocal fry that it becomes unpleasant and a distraction from what they are actually saying. There have been times I have turned off the radio due to a woman's "vocal fry" commentary. The sound is just grating!
None of these odd speech habits would be happening if people didn't spend 100% of their time on social media listening and copying and following trends etc. Fewer people seem to think for themselves now, they copy or parrot everything including voice patterns and it's just bizarre! Uptalking is something that makes me believe the speaker is not too bright.
A variation of this has always existed though. Middle class used to copy upper class accents and those invented Hollywood accents that sounded like a mix of British and New Hampshire accent. It’s not a new phenomenon. It’s just more population overall and more middle class individuals
I don't care if it comes from men or women it makes me cringe. It makes me think of like a chainsaw going off at 1:00 in the morning while you're trying to sleep it just makes me jump and instantly annoyed. I don't care who the person is it's just the sound is absolutely aggravating. I noticed it the most when I go to certain places for sure but it really doesn't matter or where it's coming from it's annoying. I hear it all the time on iHeartRadio ads. Definitely the Kardashians. As much as I want to watch the show once in a while I just can't deal with the voice.
The same reason Cis women use vocal fry is the same women Cis women 20 years ago began buying toy dogs.
- Vocal fry is associated with "LA Cool"
-Women use it as a status thing
-It means "I'm posh, and I don't have to care, and I have money and a small dog likely"
This is not a "young generation" thing. Vocal fry is used in Britian among the rich.
Women have two types of intonations we do when we want to go for stuck up La Cool. One do them is voice fry. The other is that odd voice that you can’t walk isn’t a natural voice but rather us high pitching and wanting to sound like girls. I absolutely hate it and I’m a woman, because I know in the vast cases it’s done when the woman has an attitude and usually that higher register voice accompanies that clicking too. A large segment of the women that are influencers are examples of those. It’s all done as means of people posing as higher class than they are. I agree with it stemming from Britain. I would dare say each area of the US has a version of this.

Turn the TV off. Only meet real people. Like that you can tell them in person "can you stop doing this? It makes you sound like you have the flu and when you talk it makes me feel like I'm going to get contaminated any time soon. Just speak normally".
It sounds phony and pretentious. And worse in women because their voices are naturally higher.

I'd say it isn't just the fry itself, it's also the nasal, high-pitched aspect of the voice. Both men and women with high-pitched voices and vocal fries would be categorized under this.
Another weird thing that some women are doing is adding an "a" at the end of a word that doesn't belong there....such as "Look at this beautiful room-a!". What's up with that?

I thought I was the only one who noticed that some people had vocal fry and also the only one to absolutely hate it
They don't just scrutinize women for it, have you seen the comments on any video with vocal fry? It's all just "Kill me please." However, a person shouldn't be scrutinized for creaking voices, but if you want to remove vocal fry, drink a lot of water.
It's an affectation, done on purpose. I don't listen to such people anymore. Or people who start every sentence with "so".
If I was a dictator I'd ban focal fry completely.
Thanks, now I'm gonna always notice this and diagnose people
Also it may just certain women feel they need to copy the many successful female public figures and television presenters like the way fashion is copied and eventually ubiquitous in the culture.
Vocal fry is ridiculous
I wish this was the issue.
Woman in my workplace have a shrill voice that makes my skin crawl.
It's called speaking with the least amount of energy possible.
Whenever I listen to someone with a vocal fry I have the urge to rip out my ears and tear my eardrum to pieces
Used to be called the Vassar Growl
