If lots of women and men judge that young women especially compromise their ability to be taken seriously because of vocal fry, then why would anyone second-guess that judgment? If lots of people judged that individuals who don't use deodorant smell bad and therefore hurt their image, would it be reasonable for anyone to second-guess THAT? If people react negatively to something, their reaction should be taken at face value.

Vocal fry sounds snobby and very annoying.

I am a retired U.S. Navy Officer who learned early not to use an up tone in my speech. I was taken much more seriously when I was firm and confident in how I spoke. I consider this part of a person's body language. No one is taken seriously, male or female, if they use up tones.
Good for you, but if you’re judging people by how they sound and appear instead of what they say, you’re likely mistaking people with great confidence (true or false) and terrible ideas for people with great ideas. The first step to becoming a skilled con man is to appear confident.
I'm Irish. I get a pass.
If you’re speaking in up tones everything sounds like a question. Not confident. On TV or video it’s an automatic click off!
@@Macattack11639 Maybe. Maybe not. To me up tone sounds no more or less confident than low tone, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it sounded differently to others.
But more importantly, sounding confident doesn’t mean the person is actually confident in what they’re saying or doing.
And even more importantly, being actually confident doesn’t even mean that the person knows what they’re talking about. There’s this psychological bias called Dunning Kruger Effect. Basically people who lack knowledge/skills tend to overestimate their competence and those who do possess knowledge/skills tend to underestimate themselves.
I focus on what people say, not how they appear or sound. Also, the belief of “low tone = high confidence and sign of competence” is really just sexism in disguise, and it’s sad to see women having to use unnaturally low tone at professional settings so they can be taken seriously.
Vocal fry is the opposite though. It’s allowing your voice to squeeze at a very low note.
its equally annoying when men do it too! End vocal fry!

They have to use their vocal fry to camoflauge their strength? Not buying it.
It's not to camoflauge strength, it's to deepen their voices to sound stronger or more assertive. Basically the vocal version of shoulder pads
No its to sound like celebrities, cuz they think it will make them cooler
They don't want to admit its a new trend like valley girl accents and axe body spray.
women are stronk bigot, obey the women bigot
Y'all, people don't have to use their vocal fry to compensate or camouflage anything, nor to mimic trends or celebrities. Many of us grew up before the vocal fry celebrities were popular anyway. Most of us with prominent vocal fry just grew up talking that way from a young age, for literally no reason other than it's normal for our vocal ranges. But you know what? We get criticized and told what to do to "fix" it, and that's not new. Personally, I think the "increase" in women with vocal fry isn't an increase at all, it's just new that many women who naturally have vocal fry are choosing to not intentionally change how they speak. I am so incredibly tired of being told that I am "anxious", "uncertain", "lack confidence" and a thousand other things because of my natural speech patterns and the shape of my body ad vocal cords. I cannot tell you how many people from my parents to teachers to classmates just HAD to share their opinion on what was wrong with my voice. Why is anything wrong with my voice? I was neither anxious nor uncertain nor lacking confidence, I was simply speaking. It's others who halt conversations to ask or comment about how I speak. I don't analyze their speech patterns or criticize them and ask why they end their sentences with a descending tone or why their voice is so high. Why is a way of speaking wrong because it's not how you speak? Grow up and realize that your criticism of how others sound says far more about your own prejudice than their confidence, and stop harassing women (or anyone) over petty details and telling others why they do things or how they feel. It looks pretty bad.
The funny thing is that even those women criticizing vocal fry has vocal fry. They can't help it.
I don't hear this voice as a noticeable trait among speakers of languages other than English, for example French and Japanese. There's something about the English language (especially the American dialect) that makes people (especially women) prone to frying.
I'm a native Spanish speaker, and I used to have a male friend that had a vocal fry. It sounded like he was about to lose his breath. I don't know whether it was because of this or because of other factors, but he used to date a lot of women, often simultaneously. I've also heard some Spanish speaking women with vocal fry, so it seems like it is still noticeably present in other languages, although I agree with you regarding the fact that it seems more characteristic of the American accent, and also that they can't help it --I don't think it is voluntary.
wait hold on you where on that how dictionary writer defines english video and you said vocal fry in the commnets which made me go here and here you are again
It is when it is faked and emphasized that it becomes extremely annoying. It is easy to tell when people use vocal fry on purpose. Natural vocal rasp and intended vocal fry are two different things.
'He used to date a lot of women, often simultaneously'. Probably a throat infection.
Because it's a disease that originated in the Southern Cali Valley, and as we know many Californians are refusing to vaccinate their kids which has helped it spread from there 😂 lol! But, seriously it did start there...and it's as bad as a disease because it makes a whole nation sound ridiculous and idiotic in general ofc.
It's annoying whether it's done by men or women. It's ridiculous to say it's "am attack on women". I'm a woman. I hate vocal fry. It makes me take the person using it less seriously because it's a put-on affect! I don't know what they THINK it makes them sound like, but the reality is that they sound vapid! Why would anyone WANT to come across that way?
bad take. language and ways of speaking are acquired unintentionally. thinking poorly of someone based on the way they speak is a critique of how they grew up.
Awww, poor babies. You're suggesting no one be accountable for anything and immune from judgements or evaluation because of how they grew up. Nonsense.
You say it's bad on men and women, but only women are criticised, singled out, and told not to speak that way. And, it's often referred to as "valley girl" speaking. The movement opposing what is a natural function of biology is clearly being aimed at women.
Uptalking is far more annoying to me than vocal fry. I don't even notice vocal fry but I sure notice it when it sounds like someone is asking me an endless train of questions. "Are you asking me or telling me?" is my standard response to uptalking.
Thank you, i didn't realise what the phrase 'up talking' meant. Now I know it is just adding an inflection at the end of the sentence... of course, there had to be a phrase for it 🤣
Both are equally annoying!
Frankly, as a non-American, I don't even notice uptalking, and I don't know why people are annoyed by that. It really doesn't bother me.

Some degree of vocal fry is unavoidable, I do it sometime when I'm tired and it's completely unconscious. However, some people talk like that constantly and it can get distracting and annoying. It's more noticeable in women because their voices are higher. It's definitely a cultural thing too, I've seen it in a lot of American shows/podcasts etc. Not so much in Europe 🤷♂️
Yeah, you're right. I searched for this video because I was watching a true crime channel and the (British?) narrator's voice has got to be 3/4 vocal fry. I have an irrational hatred for vocal fry. Especially when men do it.

I would like to add an alternative perspective: For some women, myself included, this is an unintentional speech pattern. Of course I hardly sound like the women in this video, but since moving to California, I have been accused of some vocal fry. As a result I've very actively tried to stop--recording myself, practicing in front of a mirror--but I'm unaware I'm doing it, and frankly don't hear it. It's sort of frustrating to constantly try and change the way you speak for other people's benefit when it's so unintentional. Perhaps this is just me, but I wanted to share regardless.
Me too. I'm really susprised it's so hated upon. I thought it was just a result of having a slightly deeper voice and all of these comments are making me feel so insecure lol.

No one said this ever. This is purely a study of linguistics applied to the double standards of vocal fry in men and woman. Not every news piece has to be huge news. There's plenty of "news" video on uptalk as well from a long time ago.
@dee dee For this example, no. Vocal fry is common in both men and women so therefore if one group is going to be criticized for it the other should be as well. There's this really interesting concept called equality, you should look into it.
@dee dee Did you delete your comment saying men and women aren't equal? Saying men and women are different is fine and true, but saying they aren't equal is straight up misogynistic. You don't believe men and women should have the same rights and be treated equally under the law?
@dee dee That's a very false definition of equality. It's like saying, "Black and white people aren't equal because they look different." Equality, going of the dictionary definition, is usually in reference to "status, rights, and opportunities." Men and women are different but they are equal. I'm assuming you don't actually think women deserve different right but rather that men and women are different. Stop using "equal" incorrectly.
Women: "I want to speak like a bored high schooler, but how dare you take me less serious for doing it."
@Justine Daugherty No, you can't talk however you want and expect people to ignore it. You are, however, free to talk however you want and deal with the consequences.
There's nothing sexist about it. If you are a man and talk like a thug from the hood, you propably won't get hired as a bank teller.
@Justine Daugherty I have nothing against them. They just don't fit in a professional environment. How dense are you to consider it discrimination to have a preference when it comes to speech patterns? After all, it's your own choice how you talk, not some inherited trait.
@Justine Daugherty Maybe some of us just feel that young women shouldn't need to edit their own voices in order to sound more socially acceptable. Let's be real here - if I start doing vocal fry, there's a certain demographic that I'm trying to fit in with. And it's not the demographic known for female empowerment...

We are an all women team at work and when my American colleagues speak, it's soooo difficult to stay focused. The only variation in their speech pattern is a monotonous descending note that ends in vocal fry - every sentence. I don't know why they speak this way but it is so monotonous and un-varied that it makes your brain just switch off. I dread having to listen to them when they explain something important. 😭
I've noticed that too. Especially lately, I've been watching a lot of documentaries on UA-cam, and while the video is really well made, the content creators (American mostly) have NO idea how to make their voices engaging. It's the same cadence in every single sentence.
😂
"attack on women" like whenever someone criticizes something women do it's called "attack"?
It's not just women who do it, it's just women being criticised for it, so yeah, it is pretty clearly an attack on women. Especially when you see the complete ignorance around how vocal fry exists.
@bcoo111 men do vocal fry too? If so, do you know what men call them? And is there some medical condition forcing these poor women to do it?
As many have said some vocal fry is unavoidable. However, Social parasites like the Kardashians take it to the extreme.
How are some of the richest women in the world Social Parasites ?
"Vocal fry" is actually something of an unfortunate term. The problem is *not* the gravelly sound. You could outdo the Kardashians on the fry, itself, and still be reasonably ok. Here's a good video that explains as much: ua-cam.com/video/ne5rB6RyCDM/v-deo.html The problem is the shift in tone that communicates "I really can't be bothered with you".
"Vocal fry" is not simply annoying or abrasive. It isn't like a lisp. Instead, "vocal fry" is *RUDE!* When you choose to use it (and it is a choice - I'm talking about the tone shift) you are choosing to *insult* the person you're addressing. Treating it like a legitimate accent, natural voice, or a speech impediment is nothing more than gaslighting.
Does this woman being interviewed realize she sounds just like the other “vocal fry’s” when she ends her sentences?
vocal fry is talking with croaky sounds, this presenter does not sound like that at all.

It creates an impression of uncertainty, and like uptalking it prevents anybody taking you seriously. So why defend it?
For some it literally has to do with the anatomy of your throat, vocal cords, and body size, and is usually something developed from a very young age and not some marker of whatever personality characteristics you are judging someone by. Uptalking also has no historical basis for the connotation associated with it, and likewise, many do this naturally from a young age. If a young person suddenly starts talking differently than they have all their life certainly it's something to talk about, but It's really fatiguing and exhausting to be criticized reliably growing up for something that many of us aren't consciously doing and have to work to "fix" to talk like everyone else says is right. I'm 23 and I still have to consciously think to talk the "right" way or people like you or various teachers growing up see me as uncertain. It took me years to figure out what even was the problem because I just did not understand why people would get upset with me and they couldn't explain. None of the people I've asked could tell me why it is wrong to talk this way,and I am neither uncertain nor unconfident and those who know me can attest to that. I defend it because you're critiquing something natural about a person, for some people it is very hard to identify what people are talking about - I would typically just be told to stop speaking in a high tone at the end of my sentence, and to stop "grumbling". I was just talking, often excitedly as a kid. If I walked up to someone and said "your face is too hairy, no one will think you're responsible" we would consider that extremely rude, however apparently with vocal fry and particularly for young women this is just being "honest" rather than rude. I find it hypocritical as there are famous older individuals and men with prominent vocal fry who most have no complaint about.
Well said!

This is the irony understood by few: The more you fixate on such a thing, the less you become aware of whether you're doing it yourself, because your perceptional focus naturally narrows.
I'm wondering whether there's an equal debate about intonation. Because that seems psychologically way more impactful to me. Like when your pitch goes up towards the end of a sentence.
vocal fry comes from being a narcissist. It's theorized that people who like to hear themselves talk elongate their speech patterns so even short sentences last longer and take up more space in conversation.

Welcome to the CBC. This is what Canadian tax money pays for.
How is this even an issue? Wellllllll... with young women the vocal fry is often mixed with the up-talk, that is, making everything a question.
One time I was on a technical evaluation team and listening to a young woman - a rep for a company who wished to do business with the federal government - up-talking for about a half hour. It was awful. I wanted to take her aside and tell her, "You sound like you're unsure of yourself and don't really know what you're talking about," but I couldn't. I suppose by choosing her to speak the company was trying to show how commendably virtuous they were with employing women, but, wow, was she ever hard to listen to. And I'm sure nearly everyone in the room thought, "She doesn't know what she's talking about." Which is Naomi Wolf's point.
The company didn't get the contract.

I had the pleasure of listening to two female lecturers giving hour-lecture, using vocal fry for about 50% of the time, while in graduate school. I never hate a class so much in my life.
Fun fact: The original usage of the term referred to an ancient Mongolian interrogation method involving large quantities of scalding fermented mare’s milk being gradually introduced into the larynx of an uncooperative captive.
I didn't realize it was abnormal -- I figured that young women speak with a scratchy voice.
It's not an attack on women. More and more men are doing the same and they're equally annoying.
It is hard to take this story serious, since the reporter cannot pronounce her "r" or "v" corecty.
We all have to have a different voice when in a professional environment versus just talking with friends. Just needs to be taught better
Vbbymcr
This isn't taught. It's acquired for style.. Dedicated followers of fashion.
How could anyone think this sounds good and no nauseating
they sound like they're out of air and LITERALLY JUST CANT EVEN...
"Who knew that Henry Kissinger would be such a big influence on a whole new generation of women? Go figure."
mattaki bwahahahaha!!!
So has Marge Simpson.
😂😂😂😂😂👍🏻👌🏻
Naomi Wolf is a true feminist, a damn respectful lady. Saying this because of the Ali G interview :D
There's a scene about vocal fry in Loudermilk, it's hilarious.
I’m more offended by women who seem to feel they have to speak like six-year-olds to be perceived as non-threatening. I see this more.
Like nails on a chalkboard! I cannot find words to express how disappointing it is when I hear people (not just women) who used to speak without it, suddenly become afflicted. Obv some is natural, most is not and is a chosen speech pattern. I’m convinced it’s a lack of confidence. Copying people they perceive as better in some way than they are ie: power, celebrity, more wealth. I wish it would never have become a thing.
Vocal fry doesn't show incompetence. Incompetence shows incompetence. Vocal fry is just annoying or unpleasant.
Stop and ask yourself how competent the people were that you’ve heard speaking with vocal fry and up talk. My guess is not the most competent. It’s usually a result of spending your life around empty, trendy, superficial, materialistic people with no substance.
Although this didn’t happen when I was speaking in English, my friend did accuse me of doing the vocal fry voice at the end of my sentences. I live in asia but spent most of my time at school speaking english growing up and that’s what I’m speculating to be the reason why I apparently have vocal fry when I talk. I was not conscious of it until she brought it up because she apparently didn’t like it:( Kind of hurt my feelings to have been said to be annoying because of the way I talk though.
I was kinda this friend of yours. One of my friend keeps talking to me in this vocal fry tone and I just can’t hold it anymore it literally makes me biologically uncomfortable. I’m planning on telling him about it, any suggestion of how should I approach to him so that I don’t hurt his feeling that much?
People naturally pick up vocal styles and accents of the people they are around a lot. You were probably around some people who did this and you unconsciously picked it up.
Hpw didn't it snnoy you though?
Because you don't talk like that to yourself
As a man I wish i would live in that world woman think we live in.
I was intrigued because I thought they were talking about heavy metal fry screaming
i dont understand why people hate it so much. its not something of importance and just makes people insecure about the way they talk, i think i have it for trying to make my voice sound deeper. I have to really strain my voice for it to not have any creaky quality to it, honestly, can people just stop saying its annoying. its hurts my voice trying to live up to your standards.
its not even something noticeable, if you'd just focus on what someone was saying instead of putting your attention on their voice it wouldn't be such a big deal.
👏👏👏👏
It's impossible to hear the words when you're faced with that grating sound. Makes one want to flee.
The problem is that the people who intentionally do this with their voice are the type of people who rarely say anything worth listening to.
@@videoettaceo8900Yes, and it destroys the rhythm of the sentence. The thought grinds to a halt, then the energy has to be picked up for the next sentence. So tedious!
Yes exactly, the only way I’d be able to completely avoid vocal fry 24/7 is if I’m always thinking about avoiding it. Personally I have other things to think about then keeping my voice in a head dominant register all the time to keep it from dropping low
Christine Blasey Ford is probably the all-time world champion of Vocal Fry. And for a one-time performance. No one has ever heard her use the same voice in class.
It sounds snobby and is usually accompanied with dialog that is petty which contributes to its negative. And men are called out on it. Its one of the reasons I can't stand vin diesel films. I think the irony is that men find vocal fry in men annoying while women seem to fawn over it which makes this double standard claim uncompelling. In Generation X vocal fry sounded lazy and cynical. In millennials it sounds petty and condescending. Each generation carries it differently.
I can’t stand voice frying. It annoys my wife that I bring it up. She doesn’t believe it’s a thing. The crackling at the end of sentences really gets under my skin. LOL
YES!! please listen !!! I can't stand listening to it!!! Please STOP IT! Including men!
bro it’s so goddamn annoying. i feel like all women on reality tv shows have this. like what is it?! it makes me cringe so hard
It started with women trying to be what they are not, like these horrible female celebrities. Before you knew it, a lot of females are sounding like this. It is really unprofessional. I thought it was just me until I finally had enough and researched online what is the reason for these horrible frog voices.
let them talk however they want.
"Why not tell me to drop it?"
YES! Please! Everyone should stop.
as someone with vocal fry, i cant help it unless i speak 2 octaves above my natural speaking tone. its not that easy
I always thought it was just people liking the sound of their own voice.
Self-confidence is part of it .. the lower, the more you want to be part of something for appreciation, so your subconscious wants to sound like the "cool" people
Vocal fry reveals a reality TV upbringing. It tells you a lot about the speaker.
Happy to know that I am not alone..vocal fry is annoying AF!! I can’t stand it!
To me, if a voice sounds a certain way, then it is what it is.
not caring is always an option
Its annoying. Its more annoying that anyone is getting upset over any of it
Vocal fry only goes hand in hand with METAL.
My rugby mates and I met some west side American girls at one of our pubs and they kept speaking very nasally and croaking. It drove us mad in the end and we made our excuses and went to the next pub.
So... Now I don't know if I can feel my vocal chords vibrating because I have a deep voice or because I'm "frying" constantly without knowing it (I'm a woman)
I believe it's only considered "frying" when it's done at the end of sentences. So, a sentence starts off one way, but then gets lower and more "growly" as the sentence ends. If the voice is naturally deeper but stays consistent throughout a sentence, then I believe that's not considered vocal fry. That's how I understand it.
Can't take anyone serious who is using vocal fry or uptalk.
:Alaska thunderfuck has entered the chat:
Social implications aside, it's bad. It doesn't sound good in person, it makes speech less easy to understand, and for media, it's even more problematic, as it's hard to mix the audio and hear people when they fade off and fry out at the end of every phrase. For example, listen to the professional people speak in this video. They power through every phrase and have a bouncy, intelligible cadence, yet with different styles. None of them fry out, and they are easier to understand. There may be differences between men and women, but it is very common among both, and it's even worse when a lower voice fry's out into a microphone. It ends up sounding like a belch.
Never knew what this was and never knew it was a problem but I grew up in SoCal
I feel very judgemental at work. A much younger coworker sits in front of me. She had severe fry and a loud voice. I ....dread when she is there. Her voice actually gives me a headache. There are plenty of young women working with me. It's not the age, but the voice.☹
I can't blame the lady for blaming it on society. Otherwise she'd be crucified by feminists for "victim blaming". It's literally her career to know this kind of stuff. It's how she needs to package the service she sells.
Of millions of possible topics... this is the conversation.
Are you forking kidding me?
MetalAsFork Exactly... Women can't even leave the house without a man's permission in several Arab nations. But NO! lets worry about what a handful of assholes think about a person's speaking pattern. Thats the real issue! Women arrested for being raped in several cultures? NO! Women possibly, maybe having it suggested to them that they might want to speak a little more normally, that the real issue!
Women will always have issues or "issues" you sexist male ...Lolololol
2cents Yea, I always forget to check my privlege and apologize for being a white male. Thanks for reminding me haha.
+Jordan Greene Glad to help. #heforshe LOOOOOOOOL
+MetalAsFork If people are getting turned away from jobs because of their voices, that's kind-of a big deal.
I really can’t imagine caring about someone’s speech patterns this much
*Sound of lawn-mower mowing grass*
Ever notice how the first thing extreme feminists do when confronted is ask why the same argument isn't immediately levied at men, even when a women suggests it.
I have temporal lobe epilepsy, and for some reason, the sound of vocal fry triggers neurological symptoms for me (similar to the THX movie production rising & lowering octaves, which used to trigger me as a kid). Still, less common than flashing lights which generally trigger epilepsy (which a video EEG simulates to diagnose).
Get rekt
Sorry to hear. But you are not alone… I don’t have epilepsy but vocal fry still triggers me in my own way
You must be kidding me. A victim lmao
It seems like Hollywood vocal coaches are TRAINING both male and female actors to do this. Its even spread to young reporters on the evening news
I don’t even know it’s called vocal fry ....
The reason women get accused of this more is that it’s really annoying on a man, but it reaches a new level of annoying in a female voice. It’s like all the airhead and vacuous aspects of womanhood tied up in a single sound
So all the airhead & vacuous aspects of manhood are more dispersed because they're not tied up in a single sound.
