  • In our society when rates of mental and physical illness are on the rise, despite advanced modern medicine, we must look within to ask where we are going wrong. Dr. Gabor Maté is back on The Know Thyself Podcast today, for a deep dive into his analysis of our toxic culture, and how we can heal by finding our true, authentic selves.
He explains how to transcend the hypnotic passivity that we have fallen into, and begin to take our health (mental and physical) into our own hands. He explains generational trauma, ignorance in the medical system, and how the coping mechanisms we develop as children lead to detrimental subconscious patterns. He also explains overcoming addiction, emotional awareness, and whether he believes there is a 'divine design' in all our wounding.

I'm a psychologist and I can relate to all that he says , both personally and professionally. He is a powerhouse of wisdom. So much clarity and such amazing information, imparted so clearly and simple. His humility shows when he says you don't have to buy my book if you don't want to. You can borrow it from a library. This is so contrasting to the tons of self help/ life coaches who arrogantly tell you to buy their books and make tall claims. This man is a gift to humanity. God bless him and his work. Thank you for making such interviews freely available on UA-cam.

He saved my life. I was misdiagnosed with panic disorder for two decades. I was taking three 2mg Klonopin a day. After reading "Scattered (Minds)," I was successfully diagnosed with ADD. I was prescribed Ritalin. Immediately, I stopped biting my nails, I went from there a day to .5mg a week. I became sociable and got four jobs plus a volunteer job. Miracle!

I genuinely love Dr. Gabor Mate and his work. This was a particularly excellent interview, however, and my introduction to this channel. I must say Andre, you have found your calling. You ask excellent questions, you patiently await answers without interruption and you don't go off the rails with nonsense or get sidetracked. Nor do you make it about yourself or try to throw in your own tidbits of knowledge to compare. Excellent. Above and beyond. I look forward to checking out the rest of your channel.

We are addicted to the very stress hormones our toxic culture generates, so we seek out ever more stressful exposure to violence, rapid change, ever faster lifestyles, overconsumption, excitement, the newest tech, etc. That addiction to dopamine and endorphins keeps us numbed and seeking more stress with no conscience. Another wonderful interview! Stress R Us

False diagnosed by a inexperienced therapist which had just started therapy practise and she had only seen me 3 to 5 times - diagnosed me with Bpd - had to take overdose of SSRI and gained terribly weight and other severe side effects - when I informed our experienced family doctor - he warned me that most of those "diagnosis" are terribly wrong and he gave me the wise advice to tapper those medication which I started immediately with success - never ever had a personality disorder at all - never ever will take any medicine nor diagnosis from any therapist or psychiatrist at all - my trust into those psychodocs has gone - today I do help myself with watching videos from Gabor Mate which helps me more than any mediciation could ever do it for me.

I was misdiagnosed with BPD and a therapist (not a prescriber) tried to scare me into trying an SSRI for early pregnancy anxiety due to hormonal changes. I soon felt much better without a single intervention, thanks also to my pregnancy hormones. Pregnancy and breastfeeding were protective for me, and I trusted myself to seek care if I were to need it. Later on, I was able to correct my diagnoses and eventually after significant effort and expense received appropriate care from individuals who listened to me. I am able to tolerate a low dose SNRI now as part of my treatment plan. SSRIs are incredibly dulling and numbing, but they can help those who are highly anxious, for example. Medications can have a place, and treatment must be individualized and only competent prescribers should be the ones to recommend them.

Now I want to go through it more slowly, to honor my needs for healing at just about every level to mourn the losses of my early life, and be here more completely in this latter end of my life for myself yes, but also for my children, and all who mean a lot to me. Even as a scientist and doctor, someone who avoids using words around "divinity," he respects those who see the world animistically and spritually. Science is a valid way to see the world but it is not superior to, and is incomplete without, the heart-centered/intuitive/feminine/indigenous gnosis.

May you live long and actively, Dr. Mate. The bottom line is that love must guide all thoughts and resultant actions from all mankind. The core of your proposals is that somewhere most of mankind missed the bus ride to love and suffered trauma, mainly in childhood. I suffered thus and agree with your analysis. Finally, let it be said that "God is Love."

It has made me realize we need to be one with the world and work together it helps me get out of self and it’s made me more present and grateful. Also at home. A lot of parents think spanking their children teaches them positive behaviors when really, they’re just beating the soul and critical thinking and self expression out of their child. Parents want their children to be scared enough of them to just listen to everything they say without question. Critical thinking for themselves and questioning things isn’t allowed.

It's the only way we will ever understand how to Revere our lives and enjoy our time here!. I don't know how people , especially those who are considered experts in this field, don't know that our lives here are 100% scripted and centered around all of us suffering, unless we figure out how to not suffer!

Growing up in another country (a collectivistic country) I soon noticed that loneliness, isolation and disconnection were the main themes illustrated in American movies. I then moved to the US and could see first hand how the possibilities of becoming independent so quickly made it possible for someone to just move away and be on their own...which could be great, except that it perpetuates separation and keeps people detached from others. Connection is the solution to many mental health and societal issues. I think.

    I NO LONGER
    HAVE MY VOICE SILENCED.
    I ROAR!!
    You are constantly being re-born,
    re-created, re-generated, every moment!
Concepts, thoughts, and stories are constantly being re-created.
    You are generating it ALL,
    and this is unconscious.
When you ‘uproot’ repression and suppression, you unveil Flow.
    You CAN change
    IN! AN! INSTANT!
    Every morning you wake up,
    your life story is re-constructed...
Do I have to wake up believing reality is the way I believed it was yesterday?
When breathing is restricted, get curious about what is holding it back,
when it is open, get curious about why that is...
    YOU ARE THE ARTIST!
Awareness of something alone IS enough!
    It untangles itself,
the knots lets go of You.
    Choose Freedom.
Take responsibility for your own suffering.

Dr Gabor Mate is an inspiration and I resonate with him whenever he speaks.
I had Breast Cancer back in 2019 and it was a total shock as I was 31. Honestly, it is one of the best things that happened to me as I became sober from alcohol and changed my life. It was traumatic too.
I quelled a lot of my anger and suppressed trauma for years. I had a very traumatic childhood and still working through this trauma now. I have changed a lot as a person as a result of the cancer.
My mother passed away from cancer and we had a strained relationship and I held anger and resentment towards both of my parents. One of the best gifts I'm giving to myself is the space to heal and attending therapy so I can be a healthier person and have healthy relationships.
It's quite amazing how dissociated and disconnected we become due to trauma. Thank you for this great video and for your channel! I appreciate these wise conversations, especially considering the world we are in.
