REMAN: Cultural Index
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- The Remans of Star Trek are a race sensitive to light and seldom seen outside of the Romulan Star Empire. Hailing from the planet of Remus in the Romulus system, they have been servants to the Empire for their entire existence.
All records of their origin are lost to them with only a few stories being passed among their ranks as they toil in the dilithium mines of their tidally locked planet.
This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.
Thanks for watching!

The Remans were one of the only good parts of Nemesis. It really highlighted the hubris and ignorance of the Romulan Star Empire that they were totally unaware of the Reman uprising aided by a select few ambitious Romulans.
@Mike Vasquez Well that comes as no surprise really. Before the events of Nemesis the romulans experienced several coup de tats among themselves for one reason or another.Yet they still think they are actually going to conquer the Federation and their long time rivals the Klingon Empire someday. They are pretty much Rome before it finally fell.I predict they will get splintered into several rival states and factions before too long. With maybe some small remnant of the star empire hanging on for awhile.
@@stevengreen9536 Well since the Romulan Star went supernova that sorta did happen
@@lizardlegend42 Well I still think they would have become a failed state anyway.Supernova or not.😛
@@stevengreen9536 the Tal Shiar will arrive momentarily to... Change that opinion.
@@nukclear2741 HA!!! The Tal Shiar can barely keep Section 12 from infiltrating their government. So i think they should focus on more important things.Like counter intelligence. :P
Me before Picard: There guys are cool, I hope we see more of them.
*the writers of Picard precede to create a story were the loss of Remus and death of countless Remans during the supernova that destroyed Romulus is never once brought up*
Me after Picard: Oh...
yeah instead they made a sterotypical "AI BAD AND ALWAYS EVIL ALWAY WHAHAHAHA" even though thats freaking stupid as to be a sapient indiviual means devloping a moral system which is as varied as the universe thus the idea they always become anti life bio killers is STUPID
They also didn't seem to mention them in Disco with regards to the reunification of Vulcans and Romulans.
NOT NESESARLY, REMANS R SLAVES, PROBABLY THEY R MORE AROUND THE ROMULAN TERRITORIES
As far as Trek cannon is concerned, I think they are under developed, but definitely full of potential for future stories. I think an off shoot theory is interesting, but like I said, Trek (and CBS) would have to be interested in exploring the Trek franchise from Nemesis forward and I am hoping this Picard show does so...but I have little hope.
Agreed on all points. :)
*canon
and the hope was dashed despite having the destruction of the romulan home system being a key plot point apparently they had no idea remans even existed as there never brought up once instead we get YET ANOTHER "All ai is naturally evil and bad" story with ANOTHER skynet rip off and the brutal sad execution of yet ANOTHER beloved character "data".
It's a pity they were introduced so late. They show up in the very last movie of the TNG/DS9/VOY era. If we'd had another season of TNG or DS9 after nemesis, I'm sure we would have learned more about them and fleshed them out better.
I always thought that the Remens were natives that the Romulans enslaved and interbred with
That's practically true
I always tied them to the more tribal and war like Early Vulcans due to the "Shock Troops" line in Nemesis
Sorry, Interbred with ?
Maybe genetic engineering test tube super soldiers, but I can see a Romulan having sex with a TNG/ DS9 Klingon light years before I would see a female Romulan having sex with a Remen.
@@krispalermo8133 Technology means no intercourse is needed. Just take two samples, mix in a tube, then implant in a womb. Can even alter the DNA of the embryo to make it 'more' or 'less' Romulan. Which is gross, but plausible.
Same
I just want a Star Trek movie or TV show to do a long involved storyline with the Romulans. They keep popping up here and there in various series, but it always seems to be the Klingons who take center stage as the other alien race.
Thank you! I was disappointed when I saw Nemisis because the articles I read said that the movie involved the Romulans but that was for, like, a second. Exaggerating, but you get my drift.
This would also include more Vulcans, by necessity, which I would also like to see. Introduce a super-powered hybrid child or cadet, and...? Maybe Reman/Betazed? Or Reman/Andorian(Aenar)? The intrigue of S31, trying to see if they can use the character.
Shinzon love him or hate him, was the only person in The Dominion War to have a clean sweep, by achieving victory in each battle he was involved him. Not even Benjamin Sisko could claim such a feat.
"They evolved this way... or maybe they mutated."
I mean. Yes?
They are like Orks from Tolkiens world: mutated from Elves
I'll admit this is strickly my own head canon but I think remans (along with other servitor races) formed the bulk romulan ground forces and ship board security during the Romulan War (of 2150s) explaining why UFP has no (reliable) depiction of romulans before the mid or late 2260s.
That actually makes a lot of sense.
I mean I can _kinda_ see the shipboard security angle... insofar as a handful of slapdash stasis systems that only prepare to cycle if the emergency lighting trips could count...
As for their use as... just general shock troops... I do actually find that somewhat... wasteful, for lack of a better term. Considering that entire generations have been used as miners, and yet there are still apparently enough to be used in any such capacity, I feel like not using them more specifically against bunkers and other such emplacements would just be a waste of the kind of understanding of such environments that would be almost inevitable.
@@seand.g423 Shock troops don't make sense in a world with A.I. Granted, Star Trek tech seems much more prone to suddenly developing a consciousness than most, (possibly due to how ingrained "humanity" is in this universe, being seeded in multiple instances.), but ignoring those few instances, indestructible automatons who you can be built without fear, remorse, ect should realistically trump ANY traditional "military" consisting of people.
@@spaceclaw1958 That depends. If it's a fast-breeding species that has been genetically adjusted and conditioned for generations, it would be cheaper to send those in as cannonfodder and save your robots for more specialized tasks.
i found the idea that the Remans had a complex alphabet and writing to be VERY strange.
Considering their most common and familiar surroundings would be a dimly lit mine,
living underground does not lend it self to the necessity of writing complex, intricate markings
that could not be read even if your eyes were able to see into the ultraviolet wavelength.
What form of writing tools would they have easy access to, aside from chisels?
What would they write on, aside from either carving in rock, pulverizing a softer rock against a harder one to make marks,
such as a talc or calcium carbonate 'chalk', or pressing symbols into clay?
What would make more sense would be larger, simple carved symbols that could be discerned by touch,
like arrows and polygons. They might well have developed their own form of Braille, with raised dots
in specific, simple patterns, and perhaps a Cuneiform of some sort.
And a final thought, as an enslaved race, certain members would be taught to read Romulan, so that written directions would be
understood. They would NOT be encouraged to develop their own distinctive script which the Romulans in turn would need to decipher.
Mika Hikyuu it likely started out like Cockney rhyming slang. A way to write and send messages to each other that their Romulan masters couldn’t decipher. They likely kept making it more and more complicated to avoid it being readable for the romulans but were never able to break free despite it so it was left as a relic of their rebellious days
I love this race and the new future of reconciliation on New Romulus in Star Trek Online.
You should read the book vulcan hart . it explains in detail how the remis where created and how the sundereded vulcans where exsiled to the mines in the begening .

I actually have looked in some personal research as to whether they would be another offshoot or another distinct race that shares traits just because of them being one of the seeded races. It is pretty neat stuff! Great job once again, you channel is my favorite on UA-cam.
I really enjoyed the novels that were written and explored the origins of the Remans, I'd love to see more about them and the other Vulcan splinter species.

@@insolubletoaster8133 that's the books I was referencing. I found it fascinating.
@@CelticCubby how was the third one? I listened to 1 and 2 straight through, but the third one seemed weird. It was like it skipped forward 50 years where the son had turned against the family on Remus. Or does it just start that way?
It was a big time jump and you find out what happened to all of the family members. They basically founded both the Remans and the Watraii between them.
how and why is there a "d" at the end of "Soul"? Good job, me!

This show could go for a very long time.
Personally I totally agree with the "mutated romulans/vulcans" idea. I think the only difference I have is that I would bet that they're not products of evolution but specifically genetic manipulation.
And forced, substandard living conditions, to keep them too weak to rebel, but strong enough to work. Their drastic appearance could be partly due to being prison camp workers.
Wow , Reminds me of Fremen from the Dune universe
The first time I see a Reman Woman at 3:04!
I prefer the theory that they are uplifted natives using Romulan DNA Since they would have been uplifted when the Romulans first rived in their new system the DNA used would have been Vulcan passing on the telepathic genes.
I was really looking forward to the 5th season of enterprise because I'm sure there would have been alot of Reman soldiers shown & the Romulans hiding there true appearance. 😢
What do Remans eat? Reman noodles.
2:38 - frankly, I prefer to see Romii as a SEPARATE world from Remus, as some novels do. It allows some easier retcons as well, for some references.
I find it very unfair to the Remans that they were kind of cast as an antagonist in Nemesis, and made to look "mean and ugly", in the tired old trope that ugly aliens are the baddies. If Shinzon hadn't been such a looney who wanted to destroy everything (again, a tired trope), he might have freed them from the Romulans and led them to independence and peaceful cooperation with the other races.
Is this guy impersonating me? What the hell!
Why do I have a whole alien species based on me!?
Based on the founders of Rome. Romulus killed remus, that's how it ended up being called Rome.
Shutup and mine my crystals.
i noticed you use a lot of Star Trek Online in your videos. In particular, this video, since I'm assuming the lack of info on the Remans. Yes, I know that pain. Remans are awesome, btw, I love them. I relatively recently discovered the awesomeness of the Romulan Faction in STO, and I run a Reman. Anyway, superb video. Looking forward to watching more...
I do not think Remans are related to Romulans, Rigelian Vulcanoids or Vulcans. 2000 years is not enough time to evolve that drastically first of all, second, they were native to the system when Romulans arrived on the scene.
Phenotypic plasticity in the Vulcan lineage may be high.
We see it on earth in many species. Just look at the modern domesticated dog as a well known example.
I wish Obisek was canon. He's my bro.
They haven’t appeared in the later Star Trek at the moment.
I find i very difficult to believe that a earthlike planet or class m. Can be completely devoid of life. And another space travelling race can JUST be the very first bi-peds.
Section 31 should have exploited the animosity between the two.
I think Section 31 did, Sec31 already had a few high ranking Romulan Council Members in their pockets.
Whos to say they didn't.... Maybe S31 gave the stuff needed to make a clone knowing that it would be discarded and cause a revolution at some foreseeable point.
Seeing how Section 31 controlled the Tal'shiar, it's not impossible to assume they where involved and Picard clone just took more charge than they had expected.
I always thought that the Remans were a primitive race the Romulans found, when they discovered the Romulus system and genetically altered with their own DNA to become better slaves.
The Remans being mutant Romulans is a good explanation though.
Perhaps it goes back further to Sargon's people, instead?
REmans would have been another foil to the Romulans. However since JJ and Bad Robot are making all of the CRAP known as Star Trek now. I have zero hope to see anything resembling the previous 40 years of Star Trek until Viacom goes Bankrupt.
I have never understood why the Romulans and Remulans are named after the mythical founder of Rome and his brother. Now the Remans apparently worship Erebus, the Greek primordial god of Darkness? Do they also worship his sister Nyx the primordial goddess of Night? Are the Vulcans perhaps of Greco-Roman extraction? It makes my head hurt.
" Rick " showed the Orians 1St Hmmmmm 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😄😄😄😄😄😃
Unfortunately, the Romulans have been completely ruined and written off by the most current Trek lore. Supposedly, aliens advanced enough to power their ships with black holes can have their home world destroyed by a supernova without being aware of the impending threat . It's a shame because the Romulans been a mysterious and cool federation adversary for as long as Trek has existed. Overall, Star Trek is as dead as Star Wars is to me now.
Its kinda funny, the only thing stopping StarTrek from turning into another version of StarWars is the United Federation, if you get rid of the UnitedFederation you'd have something similar to StarWars
Mr Crazy how exactly? Sure you have an empire (multiple) and a democratic alliance (also multiple) but besides that?
But there so many different factions and intergalactic powers in Star Trek. Star Wars it’s quite the opposite; you have the galactic republic, some form of a sith empire and hutt space. There are a few small powers in the unknown regions like the Chiss.
The Remans are pretty cool still. Ah heck..... now I have to finish watching Picard to find out if they are in it....
"my favorite race the romulans"
Me:"oh geeze we better keep a close eye this guy,he could crack at any minute ffs"
How about the Watraii from the Vulcan's Soul trilogy
The remans can not be an offshoot of the vulcans or even the romulans. The sundering happened some time after the 4th century in earth calendar. That would the sundering at the time of the 24th century to be around 2000 years. Evolution does not work that fast, it would take 10s of thousands of years for evolution to diverge this far.
I’m all for the Reman and I’m glad they are a genetic off shoot of Distant Vulcans..
they can not be, evolution does not work that fast. the sundering was only 2000 years old at the time of the 24th centry. that's way too short of time for any noticeable difference between the races.
@@TentaclePentacle It works in Star Trek. Because Star Trek is Star Trek.
Why do all the species look so similar unfortunately the biggest confirmed true reason is the best actors on earth are homosapiens and costume design can be really hard to execute well deviating too far from the performer's actual anatomy. But I do appreciate how they try hard and somewhat successfully compensate with storytelling
Their place in Romulan society and the Star Trek universe is "squishy" to say the least.
Klingon modeled after the mongols and the Romulans after Romans and Remans after Romulus twin brother Remus
Does anybody know anything about the Vulcans and romulans incestrial race the Arretians there's not a lot knowing about
In my head-canon, the Remans came about as a mutation of the Romulans, due to a virus lurking in the ecosystem of Romulus. Any child born to a Romulan that showed Reman traits was deemed so hideous and diabolical that it was abandoned to the wilderness and left to die.
Some survived, however, and slunk away to the shadowy fringes of Romulus where they formed a Reman society. They were "rediscovered" and enslaved by the Romulans after many centuries...
This channel reminds me of Spacedock! Both are awesome.
What about the reman/romluan that destroyer vulcan in that one movie??? 🤔 What race was he? Romluan? Reman he look mixed nevermind u did him in the end haha had to Edit it
Why do the Romulans want that Dilithium crystals they use black holes to power the starships
Could it be that they are not related to vulcans, with the romulans being a mix breed of the Vulcan separatists and reman natives
I made the AYYAwear clothes for them in the movie
Could the genetic similarities be part of the seeding of humanoid life throughout the galaxy? I would imagine that if they were the natives then the romulans would have began to evolve from their time on the two planets to share the traits the remans have like forehead ridges. Additionally it is possible early romulans bred with, most likely through force, like the Cardassians with the Bajorians.
I don't think their similarities could be explained by the original seeding. There was a episode in Voyager when the crew finds (or, more accurately, is found by) a advanced civilization that descended from dinosaurs, and they used dna tests to prove that they were related to humans and thus came from Earth, so it seems races that came from the same planet have special similarities between it other. As for the interbreed, it's possible, but if it happened, I don't think we can say the current remans the same people as the original inhabitants of Remus, for they would be too similar to romulans/vulcans now.
Kahleesh empire lets go. Plus if u done reference to general grievous
U could make a reference to a star wars meme.

A race oppressed by others huh? -looks at the entirety of the dominion-
Could you explain why every Trek race uses inefficient meatbags for mining instead of robots? It makes no fucking sense at all in universe. None. We need an in universe explanation. "Well the creators didn't anticipate a future with widespread robotics." is not a valid explanation FOR the universe.
Most of the time it's because they (the oppressors) don't want to risk their own necks for it and they (the oppressed) are there.
On Voyager, the Federation repurposed the old EMH mk.1 into a mining AI when they failed as a medical one. This was treated as tantamount to slave labor by the Doctor when he learned what had become of the rest of his kind.
The time has come for a Na'khul cultural index!
Genetically engineered Romulans.
The Remans could also be a result of genetic modification, or are even further distantly related to Vulcanoids (perhaps being descendants of a basal form, much like with humans and apes). Or they are the result of hundreds of generations of interbreeding with the original inhabitants of Romulus (I suspect that's where the Remans were relocated from), and every Romulan has a distant Reman ancestor and visa versa (much like how many Americans have very faintly mixed European/African ancestry from the slave period). The last one is also the most icky one in my view, and so closely mirrors the real history of Earth for my liking.
🖖
They were basically goblins in Nemesis. The extended material you mention here sounds way more interesting.
"or maybe they mutated"
but.... thats what evolving is
Do the Romulus have telepathetic abilities?
Romulus does not have telepathetic, nor telepathic abilities - due to it being a planet....
Also as far as canon goes - no Romulan have telepathic abilities.
@@assassinlv8274 You need to rewatch tos. The female Romulan Captain definately had telepathic abilities.

I'd like to hear about the Kree, which would be a nice tie in with the Captain Marvel movie.
Nobody cares about Ms Marvel all the canceled comics proves that no matter how many failed relaunches they put out .
I don’t like what Nemesis did with the Reman people. It took a growing weary ally and re-vilified them. It doesn’t seem to fit with what we knew of the Romulans.
Assume that by that point, Sisko's deception was discovered and that ruined relations between the Federation and Empire until Romulus was destroyed.
Besides, as an EMPIRE, the Romulans were bound to have some absolutely vile skeletons in their closet.
You would think the remains would live in the goldilocks band of the planet, or it’s equator
They did, as well as underground, and all over Romulus, until the Raptor Vulcans arrived and conquered them and took over both their planets.
So looking forward to the Discovery review
Ever since I was a child I have been fascinated by the mysterious Remans that were mentioned only once in the classic episode “BALANCE OF POWER” & were finally introduced in NEMESIS & ENTERPRISE. I hope that they are given a bigger bite of the action in future
I think the Remans are also the result of the Founder Effect. When a small sub-set of a population breaks off to form a new one rare traits can become fixed by random chance. In this case, telepathy.
fuck yeah, i was hoping for this
Aren't the Remans know for making the best weapons?
In Beta canon they had a nastier and faster ship that they used to try and negotiate peace with Romulus from a position of strength but they were betrayed by the first Empress.
At the end of your video when you mentioned the Kree. That Captain Marvel isn't Kree, she's a human mutant gifted with Kree power bracelets. Kree are taller than humans with blue skin
I always thought Remens were already there when the Romulans arrived but now it looks like they are cousins. Most likely Romulans adapted to mining like the trogladites in "The Cloud Miners"".
I’d like to see the kahleesh
Shout out to F.W. Murnau and Max Schreck!
Wait a minute, if Romulans stuck with fusion power when the Federation developed matter/antimatter warp cores, and then leapfrogged that with artificial quantum singularities, then what do they even want with dilithium? Dilithium is for regulating matter/antimatter reactions.
I get the sense that the Romulans' "forced quantum singularity" propulsion is a relatively RECENT advance (TNG era). Also it's likely that not all of the Romulan fleet uses it... just the D'Deridex-class Warbirds have been named specifically... which means that dilithium mined on Remus is still very valuable to the Empire as a resource and as something they can trade which has value with all their competitors.
@@TheRomulanWar I suppose you could be right. Even if this is how they do things going forward, they'd have a large Legacy Fleet still requiring dilithium if they win the antimatter route.
They are just a mix between the Billy Corgan and the Hellraiser.
Ive always find this fascinating. And a lot of places get the Remans wrong. They are Vulcans evolved in a different environment.
Romulus and remus were the brothers that founded Rome.
Reman krill All the same to me 😂
I was very disappointed with what they did with Romulus and Remus in Nemesis. There was no need to make Remus such a world with it's own species. Furthermore they should have let Patrick Stewart play both parts. Nemesis is one of the worst of the trek movies IMHO.
Have to agree would've been better to have Patrick play out dual roles. Ridiculous how we were suppose to believe just because they had Tom Hardy appear bald that means he looked identical.
