2016 Hyundai Veloster Rally Edition First Drive Review

- For 2016, Hyundai’s dialed up the Veloster with the Rally Edition, a proper special edition intended for the enthusiast. While that may be an ambiguous name for this trim level, it represents what should be the most coveted Veloster built to date.
The Rally Edition is available in one specification, starting with the striking and unusual matte blue paint, and contrasted by an abundance of black trim. The black, 18-inch RAYS wheels lend a purposeful look, with their straightforward, race-like design.
At this modest price point - $26,999 CAD - this isn’t the priciest Veloster you can buy, but there aren’t any options, and that’s alright because you really don’t need any more than what’s here. There’s a decent sound system, Bluetooth, and a key instead of a start/stop ignition button.
While it’s not a twin scroll-type of turbocharger, it is integrated into the exhaust manifold for quicker spool up, and that results in virtually non-existent turbo lag. Very impressive.
The engine is unchanged from Veloster Turbo spec, and makes 201 horsepower and 195 pounds of torque, with peak torque available from a low 1,750 RPM. The Rally Edition is specified with just one transmission which is, thankfully, a six-speed manual.
Perhaps the highlight of driving the Rally Edition is the superb B&M short shifter that’s fitted to the six-speed box. Everything about it is fantastic - feel, throws, and precision - making it one of the best front drive shifters I’ve used in a long time.
The Rally Edition hits a home run with its thoroughly revised suspension, with unique anti-roll bars, springs, and, most importantly, dampers. The last Veloster I drove had an average, at best, suspension set up, but this Rally Edition is on an entirely different level, and that’s really due to the dampers. You see, you can make the platform as rigid as you like, but if the dampers aren’t valved to match the suspension’s dynamics, you might as well throw it all away.

Just bought the Rally Edition. So much fun to drive!
+Tina Mericle Good stuff! Enjoy!
Love the review. I actually just picked up a 2014 Turbo that was still sitting on the lot new. Went in to look at the Genesis Coupe, but came to the conclusion that it just wouldn't work as a daily driver in Cleveland, Ohio winters. The looks really caught my eye. In black, it's just menacing. It may not be the ultimate hot hatch, but it's a helluva lot more fun to drive than the mid-size sedan I've been driving for the last 5 years. Also don't regret buying the automatic (6 speed torque converted auto, not the DCT available for 2016). I've driven a stick for decades now, and I have to say this thing has enough torque to offset the desire to row my own, especially in sport mode (either the full auto sport mode or using the paddle shifters). Never mind the fact that it makes dealing with rush hour traffic more tolerable.
+Grumpy Jarhead Good stuff. Thanks for watching!
***** That was the 2013's... the 14's are fine.
Love the Matte paint and Black! Excellent review again Brian!
+demorestautosport Thanks, ROBTASTIC!
just got my rally edition a week ago and I was REALLY skeptical on the test drive but holy shit it's a fun car, plus I'm getting around 30 mpg. I can romp on it through some older country roads and then hit the freeway and cruise in 6th gear. Didn't think I would ever buy a Hyundai, but damn if i don't love this thing!!
+Drew Lamp I hear ya, same story for me....LOVE the car!
Mr.Makse another great review, love you're videos. Keep it up guy's
+Filipe Domingues Thanks! All the credit goes to Nick for making this episode look so good on a crappy day.
One key selling about many Hyundai vehicles for me is the 10 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty available. My local dealer is selling the rally edition at $22500. with factory rebates. Overall I love the veloster for its styling.
I have a rally edition and it's awesome. ive put some suspension mods and some power mods to it. I'm sitting about 255 hp and honestly a perfect daily, a little more power and it would be a great track car. Nothing but good reviews from it so far!
I thought that car was fun at the time. The new N, though, that’s next level...
Brian Makse man I know, I’d love to get my hands on an N. Definitely want to put it on a track.
Picked up mine this past Saturday. Amazingly fun car for the price!
+buildmorefarms100 Enjoy!
Brian Makse Oh, I am! It is amazing how fun this car handles!!!! and the short throw shifter is heavenly!!!!
Hyundai learned some tricks from Lotus (when it retained them to finalize suspension and steering geometry for the new model Genesis) and may have employed a few of them on the Veloster.
+Thomas Ferrugia Veloster engineering by Lotus remains speculation. Haven't heard even a hint that Lotus was involved here.
Brian Makse : Me either. I'm not really suggesting that Hyundai retained Lotus to further develop the Veloster's setup. I'm just implying that Hyundai's engineers probably absorbed some knowledge from Lotus. It's not as if Lotus's team was able to keep the work they did on the Genesis a secret from Hyundai.
Great review...veloster is a somewhat interesting car.. question. where can i get that bracelet?
+Josh Smith Thanks! Interesting, indeed. The bracelet comes from Sweden - naimakka.com - I swear they should pay us for product placement!
The Fiesta ST is really the only competitor for the VT, and the Fiesta has been regarded as one of the most fun cars to drive, while the VT has been tested as one of the worst. Buy the VT if you love the looks, thats what it comes down to. I bought it because I loved the looks and thought it would handle well. Turns out it didn't handle well at all and MPG is well below estimates.
+Turbo4Life1217 The old VT was one of the worst, a lot more sorted now. Still not in the same league as the fiesta ST though.
Still waiting on the 2013 Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec review. You know, like the one (mine) you rode in last year? Review a red one, plz...kthxbai :D
i heard its 1200 unit limited...is that only for north america or worldwide?
Thanks! Looking at one today and hoping I love it!
I think we shot this review five years ago. Check out the new Veloster!
Brian Makse my wallet won’t let me lol, would you still recommend the rally??
@@sharongeorge4096 when it was new, it was fun! We don't really do used cars on this channel.
Brian Makse totally understand!! Going to give it a test drive today.
@@sharongeorge4096 enjoy and good luck! I hope you find a good one!
Great review!
+buildmorefarms100 Thanks!
Hyundai needs to get off the Scion b.s releasing different trims levels with no power increase.
thinking about buying this one before summer.. lol..
I'd be a lot more interested in this car if it wasn't for the matte paint job. I live in Toronto and the winters here can be harsh, especially since I don't have a garage or lean-to to stick my car under.
+dunetiger Everyone loves the paint, except the owner himself who has to figure out how to care for it.
Nick Busato Yup. Lovely to look at, but I can't be arsed to maintain it. I bought me a GTI instead :)
I support that choice ;)
+dunetiger Uh oh watch out for the water pump issue!
+Nick Busato I have this car, so far all Ive done is spray it off gently at the manual car wash. No issues.
would you get this over Mazda 3 GT? or this?
No. Other than the MX-5 and race cars, we don't test Mazdas on this channel.
love the reviews but i think a base gti will have much less features than the Veloster so not nessecary an apples to apples. perfomanve wise though i agree the gti engine is better. but if you prefer tech, veloster will walk on a base gti.
The Rally Edition doesn't have much tech, mate. It's pretty basic.
+Brian Makse I guess i meant the veloster comes with leather unlike the base gti, heated seats, bigger display, and to me a much more complete package than a base gti.
+Blake Swan GTi has always had issues with reliability.
+Brian Makse It is done for weight savings to make it quicker. it weighs 2877lbs.
+buildmorefarms100 You could make the same unsubstantiated statement about Hyundai.
This thing needs a full refresh! Exterior is dated! The genesis coupe is even worse!
+DoubleD 613 Both are at the end of their respective life cycles.
+DoubleD 613 You couldn't be more wrong. This thing rocks!
The seats... ( -_-) why such a silly "Turbo" on them?
Makes them look like a car for teens only.
Not saying adults can't have them but I think they are aimed at younger people. I'm in highschool and I'm trying to get this for my first car.
+payasofeo69 I said the same thing :)
+payasofeo69 Why not? Why be like anyone else?
I will option my car with NOS embroidered in the seats....
I have this exact model, 2016 Rally edition, it is a thing of beauty and so fun to drive!
Em nome de Jesus Cristo para glória e honra do meu Deus, que me conceda ter um em meu nome, Eu creio e vc Crê? alguma pessoa boa fará essa ligação dessa Bênção para mim, amém!
Mr.Makse another great review, love you're videos. Keep it up guy's
+Filipe Domingues Thanks Felipe!
