Fun fact; Tori Amos did a version of this song, of course with her own musical twist. The members of Slayer actually loved it and sent her a box full of merch after they heard it. Also, this track was used in an episode of South Park. Eric Cartman invaded a hippy festival playing this song. He said, "hippies hate death metal".
LOL I remember when that episode aired. You could actually hear Slayer fans in houses down the street yelling at the top of their lungs, "F**KING SLAYER IS NOT DEATH METAL!!!!" 🤣
This whole album is pure aggression in audio form, now that you’ve listened to the opener and closer you gotta do the whole album. Postmortem is my personal favorite from the album
Slayer is my favorite band of all time. Silent scream or South of Heaven are other great lyrics. If you like guitar try suicidal Tendencies “ How will I laugh tomorrow if I can’t smile today(video version is the best not a big fan of extended one), can’t bring me down or also Insitutionalized
Huge fan of How Will I Laugh Tomorrow (When I Can’t Even Smile Today)? That’s my favorite Suicidal Tendencies track, followed by Trip At The Brain and You Can’t Bring Me Down.
Interesting fact, Slayer was known to have tuned their 2 guitars slightly differently from each other so they could play a synchronized riff and have extra harmonies and a fuller sound... as evidence here in the first 30 seconds after the guitars come in
Raining Blood, the album is I think a genre defining piece. My introduction to Slayer was the Raining Blood / Black Magic live video. I watched that at the ago of 15 or 16 and I said "This is simply brutal, it hits you in the face and makes you go through walls". After that I got deeper into Slayer and I still love it. I attented 5-6 concerts and I can still remember Tom smiling while the first tempo speed up and us moshing like hell and everybody scraming.... It will always be one of my favourite moments.
Young lady! Watching you react takes me down memory lane!! Reminds me of the girls I went to shows with throughout my 20s in the 80s. Full of life, insightful and ready for all that life brings!!!! Thank you! Keep rockin on! 🎸🎸🎸
Nothing like seeing that song live. Hearing the drums in the beginning and knowing what's about to come. Pure chaos!!! The Slayer pit..... man I miss that.
I just turned 18 when I saw Slayer perform this live in the Ulster Hall, Belfast Northern Ireland back in September 1988. And yeah, that guitar solo scrambled my brain back then too. 🤘
I literally did laugh out loud at the last section when the outro “solos” take over! Great reaction Lilly, enjoyed watching your brain melt in real time.
You need to hear the whole Reign in Blood album (starting with the much better studio version of Angel of Death). The whole thing is less than 30 minutes long, but it's thrash perfection. Also War Ensemble is a great next individual song to get to.
Slayer never disappoint, especially their 1980's albums those are pure brutality back in the day. Love the Reign In Blood (1986) album it's a must for any Metalhead. Later those albums inspired the birth of Death Metal in the 80's, other extreme Metal genre with bands like Possessed, Poison (the German band), Death, Necrophagia, Autopsy, Morbid Angel, Slaughter (the Canadian band), Morbid Angel, Obituary, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Bolt Thrower, Suffocation, Macabre, Carnage, Entombed, Dismember, Grave, Unleashed, etc.
They disappointed me, being into metal growing up i didn't understand the hype over Slayer. All their lyrics seemed like they were penned by either a 9 year old or an angsty teen. The guy can't sing. All other metal bands during Slayers era were bigger than Slayer (says a lot), a lot of their songs have the same boring repetition drum pattern. I think because they played fast and has demonic t shirts they got more cult status rather than it being down to actually writing great songs. If I'm wrong please point out why every metal band was bigger than them even though Slayer were hyped as being the biggest .. make it make sense.
FWIW, what Tom Araya had in mind when he wrote these lyrics was a cavern with stalactites all over the ceiling; and, impaled on those stalactites were dozens of corpses. The blood dripped from the stalactites and, as they landed, they formed the structure of S'tan's new body. Dead Skin Mask is one of the most uplifting and beautiful songs in Slayer's oeuvre, so if that's what you mean by lyrical, that's what I recommend.
There's a documentary called "still reigning" and it covers the entire album, etc.. this song they perform under a rain machine pouring red fluid on them as they play. It's pretty epic
Satan? No about us, the fans when we go to the after life. We will reign! 🤘 For real ive no clue. at 20th anniversary of the album they played the entire album from angel to reign. When Reign was half way through blood rained down on the stage! You can buy the video!
A classic that never goes out of style. You can pop this on anywhere and a mosh pit will break out, and at least one person yelling out SLAYEEEEEERRRRR!!!
Raining Blood is the climax of the Reign in Blood album, a seminal work the redefined Death Metal, with the assistance of producer Rick Rubin. To fully appreciate the song’s magnificence, you need to listen to it in the context of the full album (it’s only 30 minutes long). Slayer has no ballads, but they followed up Reign in Blood with an uncharacteristically slow album, South of Heaven. For something lyrical, try the title track or the closer, Behind the Crooked Cross.
Lyrically I'd have to go with "World Painted Blood". Last time I saw Slayer was on their farewell tour. When they played this that "Marching" part, as you called it, it was me and about 7 or 8 other guys, none of us knew each other from Adam, stood in a line and just put our arms around each other and in unison headbanged to that. I'll never forget that for as long as I live.
Funny that this song has no any hidden sense, in one interview Jeff Hanneman was asked what about this song, and he said "this is a song about a dude who got kicked out of heaven, and now takes his revenge on everyone"
I saw Tom Araya being interviewed on a BBC documentary and asked about this. He broke into the shyest, most endearing big smile, like you would never have expected, and he said "Raining Blood, is basically, a horror story". He also wasn't a metal fan, when they recruited him into Slayer. He was basically some kind classic rock hippy. He claims never to have heard metal until he was introduced to it by the other guys. I think he picked up the general gist of Metal, pretty well. Most lyrical song: maybe War Ensemble. They were just writing it about what the horrors of war are, in an unironic way, with a few metaphors thrown in about it being treated by, maybe, the higher-up generals, etc, as a sport, but one where the score is measured in human life. Then, just like presidential candidates adopt songs like Born In The USA for their election campaigns, army officers, reputedly, adopted War Ensemble and blasted it out of massive speaker at Iraqui soldiers during the gulf war to frighten them into a state of semi-submission, even before any shots had been fired. If you listen to it with that in mind, you can imagine how somebody from a different culture, who isn't used to hearing something like that, might actually quiver in fear at the thought of what is about to ensue.
What's funny is that in the album's lyric/song notes, for those "solos" it doesn't say guitar solo, it just says, noise: King, Hanneman. It was just complete chaos for the sake of complete chaos.
I saw Slayer 10 times live and Raining Blood is my favorite song!! Listen to Divine Intervention or Fictional Reality. Also, where’s the Death Metal love?Try Obituary - Final Thoughts , Insane / Cannibal Corpse - Evisceration Plague, A Skull Full of Maggots / Deicide - Trifixion, When Satan Rules His World / Sepultura - Territory, Desperate Cry, Dead Embryonic Cells, Orgasmatron / Torture Killer - A Violent Scene of Death, Written in Blood / Six Feet Under - Still Alive, Lycanthropy / Morbid Angel - Eyes to See, Ears to Hear, Fall From Grace / Death - Pull the Plug, Suicide Machine / Country songs - Reba McEntire - Fancy (Bobbie Gentry Cover) / Charlie Daniels - Long Haired Country Boy / Jeannie C. Riley - Harper Valley P.T.A. / Bobbie Gentry - Ode to Billie Joe / Won’t hurt my feelings if you don’t like some of these, but try some!!
you can check the live version where actually rains blood... Jeff missed the spot, so it didn't rain on him... Tom and Kerry complained that they couldnt play well all wet, that they should have wait till the end of the song :D
6:16 and here my hopes for building up to bands such as Cryptopsy :) One band and genre at a time. Bless you Lilly! A great first, as always. Personally, I think that all other songs on Reign in Blood are in fact better than this closer. But there is no doubt that it's one of the two most popular Slayer songs. Slayer wrote about a lot of serious matters. "Silent Scream"'s lyrics are very grave, for any era. "Mandatory Suicide", "Expendable Youth", and also "Jihad" and "Unit 731".
Slayer just sounds evil. The chord progressions, solos… they went all in. Have seen them a few times live….. so many cool stories from those shows. So awesome.
Good morning! I and I would like to say three things. First you're awesome, glad to see the younger generation getting into Slayer and Metal in general 🤘🏼💀🤘🏼 Second my Daughter showed me this, she is 15 and is a Metal Head just like all of us, makes me proud 🥲🤣 and now I have subscribed to your channel because checking out your reaction and take on hearing this for the first time took me back 33 years to when I was 13 and heard Slayers Second Album Hell Awaits for the time. That was the first Slayer Album I heard and the first one I bought. My brother (RIP) was much older than me but new I liked Metallica handed me Hell Awaits and said listen to this, I think you might like it, well he was right. Slayer is such an understood band so many people think they are satanic but they really are not I would recommend expendable youth as an example of how they write about the real world that we live in and we need to understand the world as they preciev it
Here's what Jeff had to say - (Jeff) Hanneman explained that "it's about a guy who's in Purgatory 'cause he was cast out of Heaven. He's waiting for revenge and wants to fuck that place up." (Kerry) King later said that "the rest of the song explains what happens when he starts fucking people up. The lyrics 'Return to power draws near' is because he's waiting to get strong enough again to overthrow Heaven. And then 'Fall into me, the sky's crimson tears' is everybody's blood flowing into him. So basically, 'Raining Blood' is all the angels' blood falling on him. You're a smart cookie, lady 🤗
Please react to some early slayer from their first album it has a whole different vibe and is personally my favorite slayer. I'd recommend the antichrist or metal storm/face the slayer

Ghosts of war is literally everything I love about slayer in one track..!!! A hidden gem in their catalogue
i agree! ghosts of war and live undead are my 2 favorite tracks on south of heaven, both are hidden gems.
@@shealangerFuck Yeah! Live Undead is number 1 for me. It has every element of Slayer from the debut to their end in my opinion.
One of my personal favorites.

Yes! More Slayer. React to Ghosts of War, not enough people react to it, and it’s one of their best songs.
Yes please, War Ensemble 👍

Amazing reaction. Reign in blood is considered the best Thrash Metal album ever. This song proves why :)
This whole album is pure aggression in audio form, now that you’ve listened to the opener and closer you gotta do the whole album. Postmortem is my personal favorite from the album

Enjoy your take on the song Lilly. I like to describe many of Slayer's guitar solos as sounding like a couple of cats fighting in a canvas bag.😆
Kerry likens them to souls screaming and shrieking in hell.
Indeed. They are meant to convey chaos.
Raining Blood, the album is I think a genre defining piece. My introduction to Slayer was the Raining Blood / Black Magic live video. Slayer has a song they always introduce as a "love song" (seriously!) - it's called "Dead Skin Mask"
This is a song about a man named Ed who used to sleep and dance with the dead...
