  • Work to prepare the ground for HS2’s new Network Integrated Control Centre (NICC) and train maintenance depot in Washwood Heath, North Birmingham, is beginning to take shape as the team have excavated over one million cubic metres of earth at the Washwood Heath site.
The Washwood Heath site has a long-standing rail history, dating back to the early 1900s, when it was first used as a railway sidings and marshalling yard. Its heavy industrial use over the last century meant the ground was highly contaminated, and specialist contractors, including Coventry-based Duo Group, have led the intense programme of work to clean up the site ready for its new beginnings at the heart of the new high-speed network.

Speaking of the environment, are you aware that HS2 Ltd have already incurred numerous fines for multiple breaches of environmental issues?
Thousands of trees planted along the route in Warwickshire where the vast majority perished due to lack of aftercare.
The pollution of streams, rivers & other waterways with toxic chemicals.
The bulldozing of mile upon mile of hedgerows containing nesting birds when they specifically said they'd wait until the nesting season was over.. the list goes on.
HS2 is an environmental disaster of epic proportions & Britain's biggest infrastructure mistake in half a century.

Like wise qith the MCW factory building Buses and Trains, Alstom took it over and closed it at least it be back as a Railway maintainance site with people working there when it opens

@@peterwilliamallen1063 HS2 was meant to run from London Euston - Birmingham Curzon St/Manchester Piccadilly/Leeds with links at Ulleskelf,Handsacre,Golborne and one south of Sheffield. However, the Leeds leg was curtailed to East Midlands parkway following the Integrated rail report in 2021, then the Golborne Spur link followed in 2022. 2023 saw Rishi Sunak announce the cancellation of the legs to Manchester/Crewe and East Midlands Parkway, leaving the Euston (Though this is up in the air) or Old Oak Common - Birmingham Curzon St/Handsacre stretch (Former Phase 1) as the only bits of HS2 left post 2023, though some meetings have allegedly gone on between Mark Harper,Andy Burnham and Andy Street about a proposed privately funded link to around Stockport to go with Northern Powerhouse rail, as that might happen it seems, though I wouldn't hold you breath on it.

I believe this is where the Bus manufacturer MCW (Metro Cammell Weymann) used to be located.
They used to produce Double Decker buses here in the 1970s - 1980s called 'MetroBus.
The company went Defunct in 1989.
So it was some time ago (at least 34 years ago).
At least the land is being used again after it's been properly fully de-contaminated.

The majority of the far end of the site was the old Metro Cammel factory up on Common Lane, but the main area where a lot of the contamination was used to be called The Wolseley factory. But i remember it more when we used call it Drews Lane Sherpa. Which later became Leyland Daf or LDV. I grew up in Ward End & almost all of my dad's friends either worked at Drews Lane or at Metro Cammell. :-)

Surely there should have been a massive housing project on this vast site?
Where are the passengers going to come from if Birmingham doesn't do something to solve its housing crisis?
The maintenance depot could be stuck out somewhere cheap in the countryside like they've done at Calvert.
Must be plenty of land on the abandoned bit of HS2 to the north that could be re-purposed to a depot, leaving the UK's second city to put the land to a more valuable use.

HS2 Ltd state that to "break even" with a subsidy of 50/60%, they require 600,000 passengers travelling between London & Birmingham DAILY!
Given that passenger numbers on this route have been declining by 4% per year for the last decade & now stand at an average of 96,000 per day, perhaps you could explain where the extra 504,000 are suddenly going to materialise from?
