It would be interesting to see the site on a working day. Would security stop you flying ?

Security asked me to stop at Winslow station, but as I’m not on their property there is nothing they can do, sadly my work hours prevent me getting there during the day during the week

This previously beautiful area which I know well has been devastated and looking at the ridiculous amount of land taken it is easy to see from this excellent video why costs have spiralled out of control.

I am very interested to read your comment. Considering the considerable reporting on this project, I am not aware that there has ever been an official explanation as to why an extraordinary amount of land has been blighted. Obviously earthworks cause some disruption, but on this scale?

Indeed. Right there at 2:00 you can see the modest footprint of the Great Central Railway, the high speed main line to the North in the early 20th century which had stations at places people actually wanted to go.
Of course, with hindsight, it was utter insanity to close this railway after less than 70 years but, as is always the case, the politicians of the time (and especially their lobbyists) had an agenda which paid scant regard to the needs of the people they were supposed to be serving.
Fast forward 60 years and ...

@@boblovell5789 HS2 have communicated about this; I'm watching construction from thousands of miles away, yet I'm aware of why. 1. For the construction of the haul road to minimise construction traffic on local roads. 2. To make space for temporary soil stockpiles, until the day that particular grade of soil is needed on the project, or elsewhere. 3. Space for the construction of surge dams for the temporary management of storm water until the permanent viaducts, bridges, and culverts are functioning. 4. Space for laydown areas, amenities, workshops, offices, and parking.
