People give me shit about Shovels being notorious leakers, but my '81 doesn't leak a drop. It's all about maintenance and knowing how to spin a wrench. Great job, Red. P.S. Easy to tell your brother doesn't have roids or he wouldn't be running that seat!
That trans seal is crazy. I silicone the sprocket on the main drive gear and the little L clip. And the seal with cork. Had it leak free for years. It's a 75 FL.
My shovels both leaked out that seal. Checked the main shaft and it was warn beyond where the seal would have done it's job. Pulled both trannys and installed new shafts and no leaks. love the way shovels look and sound. Love your shovel.
I have those crystals door knobs all in my house lol. Great job maybe it will seal up better once it gets hot and cools several times. Thanks for the update ❤❤❤❤
Congratulations on 26 thousand subscribers, been with you from the beginning,,, my 80 lowrider has been leaking cince I got it in 96. Just carried a 6 oz bottle of oil on runs. Cool scooter!
Another successful ending in the life of the old Shovel Head!:) One thing about these old bikes, they do have such a personality! I'm glad you were able to get it back into proper operating condition and fixing the position of the shift knob. It is a beautiful Shovel with just a teensy bit of a drip! I wouldn't consider that to be a worry in the least bit anymore. Nice job! Keep wrenching, stay warm and safe in your beautiful B.C.! Peace
Glad you got it whipped. A little leak isn't so bad, right? My 2011 Heritage leaked a little and it is a bit newer than the Shovel. Man, I miss that bike. I need another so I can wear my Harley shirts again.
Very nice work. That's definitely a beautiful bike. I love how that seat gives the bike a lower meaner appearance. Ohhh by the way...I finally managed to score a seat like that which is destined for my flh soon. 😁
Good morning 🌅, Angel, that a pity that you still got a leak , you might find it gets worse after you have ridden it , I am sorry to say, I think I said that there is a copper and rubber seal, on the shaft that goes through the drive shaft, you might of damaged the seal on the splines when you put the seal in, it is recommended to put tape around the lines this is what I had to do with mine, plus I replaced the end board bearing of the clutch housing for a Jims bearing and in a race, not sure whether there is one suitable for your bike, Keep up the great work , and yes, it’s cold out at the moment, and has been very icy in the mornings, I cannot ride at the moment as I have just had my op CTS , and it’s going to take a few months to get my strength back in my hand, but I need to have the other one done as well, ❤ from France.
Hey Red,it's nice to see you at it again. Our winter isn't here just yet. But it'll be here soon. Tonight it's just under 55 here in South Texas. Hope you and the family are all well. How's your Dad?!! Stay safe..and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 🎊🕛🎉🥳🎉🥳🧑🎄🌲🧑🎄🌲🧑🎄🌲🧑🎄
I was having trouble with my 1974 Harley Davidson Sportster XLH, the solenoid was clicking when I pushed the button on the handlebar, didn't know if I would have to replace the solenoid again or if it was a wiring, starter button issue, anyways the bike is 50 years old after all. I tried the feeler gauge idea and it worked great-brilliant idea Red Rider-thank you!
Hello Red, My brother has a shovel head and it is a gem engine wise it is quite to my evo and has a lower base gasket leak so he will replace it this winter its stock with low miles and runs great, he bought it off a friend that wrecked it and bent the front forks but that was it fixed all that and it runs great he just takes it to shows and on rides local , I got my sporty all ready for next year to ride but that bike is so hopped up its a pain to ride very fare getting to old for it but enjoy my restored 1988 FLHS with the stroker engine be safe and ride free
Base gasket leaks a lot of time happen from people not letting their bike warm up before riding it. But that sounds like he got s good deal on it either way!
Mainshafts leak much more when they are rotating, so you cant test it sitting still. You need to ride it a few miles until the shaft and seal are hot, then park.
Well it leaked a lot more before when the bike was just sitting. Haven't taken it on the road yet because of how badly it was leaking. But yes, I see what you're saying 👍
I did some work on little 2 stroke engines. put a flat surface like glass down with some 600 paper and polish the metal part flat, flat, then do the same as best you can to the opposite surface. I install the part and don't overtighten it. let it heat and start to cool. Give it a little more wrench. Then never speak of it again. I love the TY 250 in the shop.
Beautiful bike that was one ☝️ of my favourite HD I had a 1976 FLH bad in the day oh thanks for sharing the info about the kill switch. Mine did that and caught fire 🔥 I fixed it and miss that bike
4:10 This is the Harley sound idling that I remember and liked. Sounds like it has a decent amount of cylinder compression. Should be an impressive road-runner.
I had a 1980 Superglide. After replacing the cracked primary covers I put it back together and aligned things in the right order and no leaks. No sealant other than the oem gaskets. (Yes, I did have oil in it)
Seems as though the most logical fix would completely solve the problem, but alas, there is Harley Davidson, always at our side to disprove matters! Side note: my EVO Sportster has never leaked a drop. Go figure. Short video tonight but well-appreciated. Merry Christmas, Angel!
Isolator are a must have, once the solenoid contacts weld to the contact plate you are up shit creek without a paddle, I saw a starter run on once, it cranked for what seemed like 20 mins, now I fit isolators to all my shovels, in order to fix your output shaft leak, assuming everything is ok , and no butchery has occured then what you will need to fit a modified spacer which has an internal O ring, it goes between the bearing and the sprocket, do some googling and you will find them ,
A great starter start button... I don't like a lot of wires.. However, I myself am not without sin, the devil himself will cry in the wiring of my motorcycle..😂
I had a 82:Super Glide back in 85:long time ago lol: Anyway I use to have problems with the tranny seal behind the sproket:Changed it and took care of the problem Until next time: And otter primary gasket:Had a dozen HD 's:since:Once the Evo came along don't remember a problem with leaks:Enjoy your riding Life You Only live once😊👍✌️
Hi, just started watching your vids and love them. Is that a breather behind your primary? Don’t you get an electric shock when you start your bike that way? Love the bike !
@@RedRiderCanadaBC ah ok ty. you know you can get a button to put on the end of the starter to bypass the start switch? Just a thought. Love your vids !!
The electronic ignition on my'82 went out 3 weeks after the warranty went out,had points and condenser put in instead.More reliable and cheaper that way.
I don't know diddly about it personally, but I read somewhere that the old chaindrive bikes leaked out the sprocket side on purpose to oil the chain, and that you could put the seal in "backwards" to stop the leak and just oil the chain yourself.
on my old shovel pan, there was an adjustment on the oil pump to increase or decrease the flow of oil to the primary, just a little screw on top of the pump I think. So its good to mke sure you only have what you really need flowing to the primary to reduce leakage
Being Canadian, I don't know anything about egg production in the USA. A guy I worked with who grew up on an egg farm told me the only difference in eggs had nothing to do with what's on the package as no chicken sees daylight. What it actually indicated was the type of food they get and there for higher price for the eggs.
Ok, admittedly, 'cold' means something completely different in Canada. I'm at work standing outside at 7 deg Celsius at sea level and I'm fine in a sweater but the guy I'm working with is wearing a parka and crying about how cold it is. He's Indo Canadian and he was born here. It's about 5 deg Celsius colder where Red is only 100 miles away but her elevation is higher.

Old Harleys don't leak. They just mark their territory.
That is one awesome build Red. Shovels are getting a lot of attention lately. 👏 Good job.
Yea shovels are coming back in style!! Makes me sad I sold the spare engine we had 😞

Roger that, I have a 1983 FLHT Shovel 5-speed, no leaks.
Haha yea they don't have to leak.
I LOVE your end bloopers honey, keep the shiny side up :)✌

Yea, I'm going to leave the more in depth stuff up to my brother to check and fix haha.
Love the starter kill switch. I had a starter run away on one of my previous Glides.
l did the same thing on my 2 85 Evo Softails starter solenoid & also used a feeler gauge.. work's a treat... Cheers Red....

I had a 76 shovel. I eliminated three oil lines to the primary had it for 21 years. The only place that leak was from the drain plug,
Rebuilt my gearbox no leak for 1 year 😊 wanted to use a super nut but could not it touched the inner primary on my 82 flh ride safe good content.

Beautiful shovel, master disconnect awesome idea and relay delete, tell your brother Ray's spacer should solve the leak entirely
Cool, good to know. Thanks!
That is a beautiful bike! Reminds me of my 1st Harley only mine was two tone Cadillac red and white. Never should have sold it 😢.
Sounds like it was a nice bike!!
Hello Angel,,, nice shovel !! You did good! ❤
Appreciate it!
Love the lines of the bike so classy wonder if white walls tires would make it pop more awesome job red! ❤

I don’t think I’ve seen your dads bike together? I think it turned out very nice, what a great stance it has.
Yea!
Groovy episode. You're a trip.

Nice looking Bike. I don't like a foot clutch and short shifter myself but a lot younger people do . Good looking front end .
We'll see how I like it I guess lol
Nice job kido 👍🏻and id recommend a closed off or abandoned parking lot to learn shifting that swine, no pressure that way🤙🏼
I'm gonna try finding a parking lot I can get to without having to deal with too much traffic
I like the look of it. Sanitary and elegant.
Yes 👍
Sweet scooter! Stay warm!
Thanks!
Great looking bike Ms. Red !
Thanks!
That is a nice looking bike!
It's a beauty!
I think the Shovel Head was the best sounding engine Harley ever had ❤
I agree
Love shovel headmotor, watching from Los Angeles, Great Video.
Thanks!
Love the FL shovelhead
A kill switch on a motorcycle, what a great idea. i am surprised that I did not come up with it myself. Thank you.
It's not a kill switch, it's just a battery cutoff to the starter. I just mis spoke in the video.
@@RedRiderCanadaBC you're absolutely right.

😎
Looks almost exactly like my black '82 except I had the cop seat with the skirt.About a $100 from your local h-d dealer
Yea the seat isn't gonna stay on this. My brother will have to find one that he likes.
The shovel came up well ' nice work ''
Thanks!
Sweet bike just like us old guys love
Lovely one! 😎👍
😁
Edit* the red switch is just to cutoff the battery from the starter, ITS NOT A KILL SWITCH.
Beautiful.
The bike is nice too
Check to make sure the transmission is vented correctly and not stopped up.
If not vented pressure forms as the tranny oil warms up and its got to go somewhere.
I okay rebuilt it and the vent was clear when it went back together
@@RedRiderCanadaBC That's good, I will scratch that off the checklist. Hope the leak is done with. Love your videos

Hi, just started watching your vids and love them. Is that a breather behind your primary? Don’t you get an electric shock when you start your bike that way? Love the bike !

@RedRiderCanadaBC No one is born knowing this stuff. Developing skills is not for the lazy, clearly you are not lazy. Cheers
That's a doggone clean final drive chain, what do you use to lube it?
It's brand new lol. And its a nickel plated X-ring chain that is pre greased.
