THE OLD MAN'S SHOVELHEAD

- My old man built what I consider to be the perfect FLH. From the style choices to the color combo, it's a masterpiece.

i have a 1980 flh since new all original, all of a sudden it's 44 years old and i'm 74.
Great video, you are absolutely hitting the mark with your material and presentation- I especially like the music too. Said this before- your Dad is Old School Cool and his/this FLH refelects his tastes accordingly. Now the only thing I might change on it, if it were mine is the addition of a luggage rack on the rear guard, nothing else. Looling forward to your next video. 👍
Thanks for the comment. I appreciate any and all critiques. You'll really dig the next bike we do
Love my 1980 FLHP. Got it for 4 grand, rebuilt the transmission and was god to go. I go on runs and everybody has to check it out. The young guys always ask "what is it" because most of them never saw a shovelhead before.
JUST NOT INTO the PIZZA CUTTER FRONT WHEEL
I have to say I love the pizza cutter on wide front end if the fender matches 😉😊. No two Harleys exactly alike; that's what I love the most.
@@chrisdickens8233 These BIG HEAVY FLH'S LOOK BEST WITH the 500 X 16 TIRES. JMO
@@davidson2004fatboy I can't argue that... And for practical purposes, safety and comfort... Like those old car commercials: "Wider is better!" Haha. ... Similar to how springer front ends look awesome, but please put hydraulic telescoping forks on my bike! 😜
Not to mention the with each passing year, dressers and such gain many points choppers and bobbers had in my youth. 😁
@@chrisdickens8233 🙏🙏🙏
I bought a 1981 FLT 80 ci. 5-sp in Oct. 2002.
Redid it, gave it to my Son Oct. 1 2023.
He is happy.
I have 2 more H-Ds yet.
I wholeheartedly I agree!! This is one sweet bike!!! it is a gentleman's bike!!!! Bravo!!!
Thanks ya kindly
Start the bike AND the freaking music.
Why kill the motor sound with crap?
The music is ment to mask the sound of the wind buffer on the audio. If you couldn't hear the bike initially, then you need to get your ears checked
I'm an old man i wouldn't mind having one🎉
Man, how can you fire up the Shovel, down the road and put that stupid music in the video. We would much rather hear the bike.
Well, if you knew anything about anything, you'd know that wind buffering distorts the audio to a point that you can't hear anything other than a static sound. So, there isn't anyway to catch the exhaust note with an external mic. So, what would you rather here? Wind noises and no exhaust at all, or no exhaust and a song?
I am absolutely rolling on that comment about the original seat. Great bike, brother.
Much obliged. Glad ya like the video
My buddy has a ‘76 FLH, in white. He’s the original owner. Still has the original seat and fiberglass bags on it. 😂
2 things: I dig the diver down paint scheme on the air compressor and the 21” front wheel . Nice !
Hahahaha thanks
I am only 83 years old, but my Harley is a 99 EVO Softail Custom. Only 25 years old. But I started on a 1942 "45" Flat Head, when I was 14 in 1955. I kind of like them all from the 40s to the 90's. I rode an 84 Iron Head Sportster for 23 years. The newer bikes do nothing for me. Anything newer than the late 90's just do not have what the older bikes have. If I had to explain it you would not understand.
A beautie! Polish that headlight nacelle out, you should be able to get that looking like a mirror. Flitz and a Dremel with a small polishing end. Love the color choice also.
I use a SBC valve spring under my pogo.
Good to know
The fat boy kit your talking about is a shovel head outer valve spring. Fits perfect, I've been running one on a hardtail shovel for 30 years.
I have an 81 FLH that I bought new. The engine did blow up 2nd season. Was rebuilt with some better parts and 79 flywheels balanced. Has not been touched since. All original paint. I put 4 over tubes and 10inch apes on it. I would not give this bike up for anything new.
I've got a 77 and run a short E S&S ... had it about 40 years now. Sounds like yours ids due for a battery soon. I also ran the solo cop seat with the pogo stick. No mater how i beefed it =, I still felt like I was sliding off. Went back to a frame mount. Nice job resurrecting ... one more thing I painted a similar a similar 2 tone scheme only with silver and charcoal grey. It appears we share aesthetics
Fn awesome, I have a 76 flh meself that is personalized similar to yours. Had it 12 years now.
It's a rider and always will be.
Nice shovel . I heard the shocks speaking. Take some spray lube and spray it down In the shock through tye top . Mine was driving me nuts . Sprayed the lube down in there real good and quiet and rides like a dream
I've been a shovel guy for a long time. i had them from 67- 72 ( every year) .My 71 I put better than a half a million miles on over the 20 years i had the old whore. I sold that bike about 20 years ago and she is still in service.
the only thing I'd do to that bike is put some big leather bags on it, if you can find them. shes a beauty.
chevy small block valve spring. 2 inch diameter
Not one thing. Thanks I have a 82 Sturgis basket case I wish I knew someone could fix it for me
We just put a regular outer valve spring over the pogo, and that stops the seat from bottoming. Looks like you need a better pogo stick in the hole under the seat.. much love for the shovelhead
God bless you both.
💪🇺🇸💪🇺🇸💪
Much obliged
she is sweet.
Appreciate ya, hoss
Beautiful Shovel!
Thank ya kindly
Should be adjustable shocks notches to stiffen them up on the bottom. Youd need the half moon tool if so .
Love that bike have a 80 lowrider
Rad
That’s a nice bike.
Damn, very cool ride man, great job saving it
You ought to try Polishing the aluminum.
Try J an P cycles for the parts what you need
Great Two -- tone paint !
colony has pogo springs u want the springs for a riged frame and ues the right springs in the kit for yr wt. and grease them well don t buy teddey s the helper sprlngs for buddy seat will work also HAPPY TRAILS
Thank ya kindly
I wouldn't change a damn thing........ except the bike's title, into my name.
Hahahaha
Beautiful machine!
Much obliged
what front rim is on there? thank you looking for a new set of wheels for my 81 FLT
It's just a stock harley 21
I've got a 78 1/2 80 ci 75th anniversary edition, bought it in 1988 for $3500 and was a young buck so I removed the fairing, tour pack and the glass bags and the funky buddy seat and sold the parts to the local Harley shop for $125😳didn't think I would ever put those parts back on,we called those baggers back in the day Garbage trucks! Big mistake selling those parts, now at 72 I'm riding a 1998 Ulta Classic that I've had probably 10 years but still have the 78 1/2 but rode it for years with a police solo seat the same book rack on the rear fender, replaced the original tank and tins with aftermarket, 2 tone base coat clear cote with a prism pearl green over black and cream, fishtail headers with an S&S B Carburetor and added a kicker and beach bars with the wiring inside the bars and added the pinhead style horn between the cylinders" Carefree Highway" inscribed on the fat Bob tanks! Many great rides on that old pig,46 year old machine! I'll be gone before it will be gone! Greetings from Tampa Florida 😎
Rebuild the pogo stick and use onty nos Harley seat post springs in it. Adjusted for your weight. Those repro Tiwan seat post springs are crap and way too soft. It wont bottom out with Harley springs and you'll love it. Very cool bike.
nice bike. i have a 71FLH . i don't find the bags made any noise. i run a solo seat with stiff cylinder external springs because i don't like the "pogo" feel. these are great bikes, just keep a wrench to what vibrates loose. if you gear them properly, they will cruise all day at 75 and run very smooth. i've had mine over 30 yrs and it's been to every state east of Wyoming.
I've had my 75 since new. I will always have my 75 The only other Harley to interest me was the V-Rod. Otherwise I left Harley when I bought my Harley.
Nice bike. Finishing up a similar yet different 73 FLH. 2 into 1, lowered rear. Like your style.
I have a 1970 myself
I love these old bikes, thier owners are always trying to impress us with the fact the damn thing will start.
Great video! My Dad is a old Harley guy, he always runs a Pan/Shovel valve spring on his seat post bikes.
Nice bike
This reminds me of my 1994 Electra Glide classic. I picked her up when she was 29 years old.
Beautiful machine, and excellent work.
This video makes me want to finish restoring the '72 ElectraGlide Police bike I've had since 1980.👍
Get after it! Lol
@@braydonhopper
It's pretty much done.
The biggest part is putting the primary back together after replacing the 3rd stator in 30 yrs.
I hate doing primaries, especially at my age, and with only one eye left.
Ride safe. 👍
@@rarebreed9208 ahh. I hear ya. Best a luck
Looks as good as any billion dollar Harley to me.
Much obliged
Get a valve spring from a 350 chevy or a 454
Much obliged
Love the bike~!
Sweet, I would recover the original seat in black and put it on.
Nice Bike! I bought a 1983 FXWG brand new. My only Motorcycle and still ride it. Me being 70, not getting any other bike.
That's cool as hell!
Oh to be back in a state where I don't have to wear a helmet.
It's the best
That's a beautiful bike,,well done bud 👍 😊
I think i see a taller front tire than the 16 inch that is on the 87 flh than i recently took possession of. beauty of an ole bike! tahnks for sharing!!
Wow! Wouldn't change a thing. Nailed it.
It would've been nice to hear that engine.
Well, when you buy me a mic set up that doesn't pick up severe wind buffering, I'll get ya some clean audio
1669 was the last good Year for Harley Davidson. Bought a New 76 Sportster. Piece of Horse Dunk. Went back to the Triumph 850 Bonneville.
Yea. Only a masochist would own an iron head hahaha
Nice.
Cool😊
Nice
Whats with the music when the bikes runnin'
Little greenbag by the George baker selection
That bike is perfect the way it is it's beautiful bad a**
There's only one word for that sweet. Very nice ride never sell it
Uhh
Freaking great ride brother! Today i went and looked at 1975 flh stock with rebuilt motor gearbox repaint im buying it
Atta boy!
I would have ditched the 5 gallon tanks and used 3-1/2’s. It makes a leaner looking Big Twin. Nice bike!
If it wasnt so original, we would have
I love that bike and if I was going to change anything I would probably put a what in Australia we call a pussy pad basically for your lady or even a possible but as far as it goes its totally genuine old school even the old crank starter.
We call em pussy pads here in the states too lol
Nice looking Shovel, I never fancied one but when Harley brought out the Switchback they made the bike a lot of us said would be a nice bike, except for the rims, you can buy a pogo stick aftermarket kit to fit a old style saddle.
Much obliged
Consider yourself lucky a great 70s bike like this would allow you to ride it. Go FYS.
Lol
Goddamn Dude, one of the coolest videos I have EVER seen!! Keep on ROCKIN’!
Thank ya kindly
I love the bike overall !!!
I love the paint !!!
I like stock buddy seats.
I would attempt to convert
fuel injection.
Everything else is a piece
of heaven on two wheels !!!
🤠🤠🤠
I've kicked around doing a fuel injection conversion on an old bike, but they are just too damn expensive to justify. Glad ya dig the old man's whip though!
BUD LITE AD GOT YOU A DISLIKE
I don't control the ads. UA-cam populates those based on your Google data... so... that's on you buddy lol
Awesome video on a classic shovelhead by a father and son. I wish I could have listened to the engine as it traveled down the road over the music, but the tune was cool?
I would have left the original audio of the exhaust, but the wind buffering in the mic made the shovelhead inaudible. Thanks though
I would add a kick starter and a wide glide/ softail type front fender. Then I would do my damndest to wear that beautiful machine out.
much respect for bringing that machine back from the dead. That is a fine ride my man.
Appreciate ya hoss. Interesting choices btw. Something to kick around
I had a 1974 I built from the scrap shelves. I ran the S&S B model on it for years. Never had a problem.
Congratulations
First time in my life I didn’t wanna hear little green bag
Well, you figure out how to record an exhaust note on a microphone while the wind is blowing lol
@@braydonhopper you got me I can’t help you with that. Nice video. I’m just giving you shit
I'm not inpressed.
We don't care
Hi, there is a leakage??
Just the typical drops once in awhile
Love the looks of this bike, Ya did a real nice job on it. What length shocks did you put on the rear, love the way the bike sits.
Thanks! 10" if I recall correctly
Great lookin Old girl.
Now that’s more like it...very well done sir. Oh she sounds strong
Much obliged ole boy
That is a beautiful bike!! Will you please tell me what front rim and tire size that is? Plus, what shocks? That bike sits perfectly. Thanks!
It's a 21. Can't remember the tire size for the life of me. Will get back to ya on that. The rears I believe are 10"
@Braydon Hopper much appreciated
I would like to know who made the pipes for that gorgeous scoot
It's a factory style 2 into 1. You can get the header from paughco. He just put a slip-on fish tail on the header to give it that old school touch. That slip-on is a diamond dozen from a plethora of aftermarket manufacturers.
Hey your dad said he bought all those parts my buddy is looking for a set of 61 panhead saddle bag tops let me know if you all got something like that
Keep it between the mustard and mayo and rubber side down later
He doesn't have any panhead saddlebags, just some original shovelhead ones, but they match the original bike. I'll keep an ear to the ground and an eye out for ya though
Ty
Excellent T @ A 😊
are you in Texas ??? and where did that demo take place gotta be texas because no helmet law
Kansas
Cool my friend. Got a 78 anniversary, and just picked up a 68 flh to work on.
He wanna sell that 68? Lol
Looking for a basket pan to go with it. Gonna be sweat when done.
Very nice-looking Harley I also like the song that goes along with it I don't remember who it's by though

@@braydonhopper "Little Green Bag" Great bike. Your Pappy done it right.
Ахуенный мот ! Хочу такой же!
Awesome Ride
One of the nicest looking Harleys I’ve seen.
Thank you
"I didn't want to fuck it up"..a good concept
Hahahaha
What handlebars are those im trying to rebuild my dads old flh 80 and all i got is a frame and motor trying to build it back to original but ik my dad would want me to make it my own so im trying to keep it original while adding my own touch
They came with the bike. I'm fairly certain they are just a stock two piece FLH bar. They have that weird riser clamp that requires two piece vars. There isn't a lot of options, so I'd just git it a Google
@@braydonhopper okay thanks it's been an adventure I lost my old man last year and I'm trying to rebuild his first ever motorcycle as itll be my first ever motorcycle so it's been hard tracking parts down with only a motor and a frame
@Steven Albers sorry to hear that hoss. I'd help ya out, but the only extra part I have for a FLH is the nacelle. There are a couple antique motorcycle swap meets you'll be able to find a lot of parts for your old man's bike. FLH parts are a diamond dozen, but these old bikers tend to hoard their parts. If I can help at all, drop a line. I might be able to point you in the right direction depending on where you're located.
Really sweet Bike! Great video, tunes are spot on🤙
Appreciate ya
It's a stock panhead valve spring
Much obliged
Nice ride

Love it, got a 77 FXE/FL clone
