I swear... This is the best thing I have ever watched in my still young but 30 years life. Melvin made me fucking cry like a baby.... it has to be shown to everyone.... It has to be forcefully shown to every! one!
There were more unexpected moments in “As Good As It Gets,” than in any movie I have ever seen. I am so glad it was Jack, Helen, Greg and Cuba who were in it. So beautiful.
I am thrilled she won. One thing about her that has puzzled me for a long time. She lived with Hank Azaria for 6 years and the minute they said "I Do" it became "I Don't (anymore)" like so many others in Tinsel Town when they put a ring on it!
Helen’s right that Greg Kinnear’s performance was fantastic. Robin Williams, who won the Oscar for supporting actor in Good Will Hunting, was also terrific. Both weren’t typecasted into their respective roles. I think Robin playing a “serious” character that was quite a departure from his other portrayals certainly didn’t hurt. Greg was a relatively obscure actor at the time, and I think both the character he played and the overall tone of the screenplay being a dark romantic comedy-drama with themes of homophobia, racism, misogyny, mental illness, and class divisions presented a more complex role. The movie was about three very different characters. Jack, Helen, and Greg were sensational; only two won any kind of award for their performance.
This is clear win for Helen Hunt. Those who are against this outcome are either those that didn't even watch the movie As good as it gets, or those that watched Titanic in tears
I saw "as good as it gets" many many times, because it´s a good movie, but you people are so blind discrediting Titanic that you can't see what's in front of you. I mean it's all right if you don't like it, but in terms of acting, Kate Winslet was the best performance of the year, and Helen Hunt didn't do a bad job, but please! it's not THAT good as people say here in the comments. She doesn't even come close to his partner in the movie, Jack Nicholson, her performance it's clearly overrated, i don't know why, maybe because of the very good writting in the movie, but still. As for Titanic, Kate winslet is wonderful as usual, you can just see all her feelings in the expression of her face, as well as the change of her character through the film, from the melancholy classy young lady, trapped in the rules of the aristocratic society, to the passionate and rebellious girl in love, and the heroine and survivor.

I'm, English, & it's refreshing to see, a brilliant, American, actress, like, Helen, win an, Oscar. It always seems to go to, posh, middle-class, English , actors.Well,deserved.An, amazing, performance.
That's because the Academy is made up of a bunch of liberals who tend to be Anglophiles (and Europhiles, in general). The rest of us Americans are as equally puzzled by all of the British (and European) love. Within the past decade, Hollywood has gotten ultra-liberal, which has resulted in more British (and European) castings/nominations/wins. However, the country now seems to be shifting right politically -- many Americans are sick and tired of woke culture/politics, which is championed by liberals -- so it will be interesting to see how that will affect the Oscars/Hollywood in this decade and beyond, after the Republicans take both houses of Congress and the White House (and then some). Conservatives are generally patriotic, so if they begin calling the shots, it will be all about America First. Liberals have a reputation/history of being un-American.
All these comments about Kate Winslet are hilarious. Prior to the Oscars, Helen Hunt had won the SAG award for Female Actress in a Leading Role (in any genre) as well as the Golden Globe for Lead Actress in a Musical or Comedy. Judi Dench had won the Golden Globe for Lead Actress in a Drama. Basically, Kate Winslet didn't have a chance in hell.
I think even Kate would agree that she didn’t deserve an Oscar for Titanic. She herself has said that she cringed when watching her performance, saying, “Really? You did it like that?” Helen did a great job at portraying a sensitive but tough Irish working class single mom from Brooklyn who doesn’t think much of herself, yet doesn’t take crap either. She captured the essence of her character perfectly.
Kate Winslet is fat! Those boobs are bigger than cow's udders. I don't know how she squeezed them into that bodice. Needs to lose some lbs. Typical Britisher probably loves her cakes and tea. Work out, Kate.
@@canigettawhatwhat you know twitter would be apeshit over that in our post #metoo world. good on her for being a good sport and letting him kiss her hand and remembering HIM when it was her turn to accept an award. my less mature and younger petty self probably would have opted to "forget" to thank him too but goes to show what a good soul and strong character she always seems to be in interviews and such.
I agree, I just watched it and couldn't decide if he did it on purpose. Like "I'm not going to give kudos to anyone" As he got up for his award. Or he "in the moment" just forgot. (Which I doubt, as good as an actor he is. (I have read hes a also really arrogant.) Not sure how true it is. But if you watch, she is about t do it back. And who can blame her. But he must reach out, and take her hand, as she seems surprised, and turns around. And even then doesn't wait but gets away, and goes up for the award.
What can I say? It fills me with emotion to see again -like the many times before- this intimate scene that gives me a feeling of something wonderful that I don't know how to define and that can only be in the divine hearts of a mother and daughter who love each other deeply. Helen Hunt has that incredible ability to make us feel the nobility, goodness and immeasurable beauty of the soul of a woman who was born to give the best of herself to everyone who needs it and who needs love and comfort.
Her performance was good, and in any other year id would give her an award,i dont know about the Oscar, but truly deserved something...But,having Judi Dench here and her performance on Mrs Brown, that was the one who've won simple as that!...this was more an actors branch vote that lean heavily on popularity other than who truly deserve to win.
I liked the fact that Helen Hunt said nice things about the Nominees especially Judi Dench I didn't see the Movie Judi Dench was in, but I saw Titanic several times and I thought Kate Winslet did a great job in that Movie. I think it might have been interesting and maybe would have put Kate winslet over the Edge is that if through Make up she played the Old Version of herself as well as her younger version instead of having another Actress play the Older Version of herself. Although that actress also did a great job.

@@livia469 correct. The roles were totally different too. The way they were written worked against Winslett. Titanic was an overblown soap opera.
You did it like that?”
Helen did a great job at portraying a sensitive but tough Irish working class single mom from Brooklyn who doesn’t think much of herself, yet doesn’t take crap either. She captured the essence of her character perfectly.
@@MillennialAngstIt was good for Helen Hunt but not comparatively.
Her career since has been unremarkable where the same can not be said for Winslet.
Kate Winslet is fat! Those boobs are bigger than cow's udders. I don't know how she squeezed them into that bodice. Needs to lose some lbs. Typical Britisher probably loves her cakes and tea. Work out, Kate.
Took a long time and a hell of a determination for Winslet to win for the well deserved Oscar for The Reader.
Her performance in titanic is so overrated. 80% of her lines are just saying the name JACK. It's so overly annoying
One of my all time favourite movie, I was very happy to see both of them got this coveted award for the same movie!!
Helen Hunt well deserved winning the Oscar Best Actress Award. Bravo !!
3:56 You can tell Kate Winslet expected to win, specially since "Titanic" took home almost every Oscar that night. She can hardly hold her tears.
MrMcsia It should have been Kate’s
She should have win.
Impressive performance and such a humble, sweet acceptance speech!!!
Helen Hunt es una actriz fuera de serie! Sencillamente maravillosa!
Ms. Hunt was wonderful in this movie! Brava!👏🏻
I just rewatched this movie. Everyone was flawless. Helen Hunt was so natural and pulled this off so beautifully. Totally an Oscar that was deserved.
She was good but definetly not Oscar worthy. Judi Dench, Helena Bonham Carter, Julie Christie and Kate Winslet were highly superior.
3:20.........Jack kisses her hand as she goes up for the award..........
He completely ignored her when he won too lol. She went up yo hug him and he just looked the other way
Ryan M. I saw that too! I thought how rude!!! Not being mean but she seemed sad 😞
@@canigettawhatwhat yah, what was up with that?
Yes 🙌🏼
She made me understand this woman in this role.
It was me.
Wonderful acceptance speech! Very gracious!
"As Good as it Gets" is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Such dialogue and casting, and then delivery of performances. Just fantastic.
WHEN I FIRST SAW THIS MOVIE I TOLD MY LOVE, BOTH ARE GOING TO WIN THE OSCAR. I WAS RIGHT. WELL DESERVED.
Judi Dench created brilliant performance!
Helen Hunt stole every man's heart in that movie. There was no contest
I could not agree more and I am a woman..lol...and a Brit...
Stewart Lawrence she also stole the oscar, way undeserved for this performance
And if she didn't, let's hope Greg Kinnear did. ;)
Deserved and it was tough choice - love As good as it gets too - fantastic performances even the dog 🤗
Helen was the best of the best that year. Legendary performance; authentic and true.
Totally agree David.
David Holler And reliable as well.
Greg Kinnear should have won as well.
Helen hunt , fabulous in this movie
Even this little clip brought tears to my eyes! She was amazing. Great movie, great cast.
What an extraordinary actress! What a performance! What a speech!
And what a wonderful movie...
Jodie Foster deserved a nomination for Contact
Katya ?
wow, being so young (i'm an old spinster now at 35) i hadn't realized Contact was that year. Can't help but agree with ya, the script has its flaws but her acting was superb and her talent is all the better for it. I always find myself watching it when it's on TV and not just for the baby faced matthew mcconaughey eye candy lol
@@kidsundance9021 As my 61 year old father tells me on a regular basis, "you're a spring chicken" whenever I joke about being a spinster so no, I'm just a drama queen from Kansas City ;)
@@kidsundance9021 "And that kids, is How I Met Your Mother..."
It must have shocked everyone in the room that Kate Winslet didn’t win. But I’m glad to see Helen winning an Oscar.
Edit: I can see now what everyone is talking about in the comments, and it does make sense. The Academy didn’t like to reward gloss then, they awarded talent. It’s about the performance.
i think it didnt shock anyone
livia gherasim I just mean being that Titanic was such an insanely smashing success with 10 other Oscars won that night, people might have thought Titanic would’ve swept.
Even with all that Titanic oscars and the grand success of it, the performances of the two are not comparable
@@lewisedwards4058 The weakest part of Titanic, though, was the acting. Leo didn’t even manage a nomination. Winslet was considered lucky to be nominated.
@@livia469 correct. The roles were totally different too. The way they were written worked against Winslett. Titanic was an overblown soap opera. As good as it gets has a beautiful arc to it and flashes of sheer brilliance. Not just the narrative but the dialogue. When Carol asked Beverley "what do you want?" you could feel her desperation. It was rivetting. My sister said she thought it wasnt authentic. I disagree strongly.
So happy she got this. Her portrayl of a waitress raising her kid was awesome
Helen Hunt is love.
So good in As Good as it Gets
Helen Hunt is so incredibly good in this movie! Well deserved!
The Twister actress did a great job!
