      Here's that steal by Roberts. The evil Yankees were leading 3 games to 0 and in game 4 leading 4 to 3 in the bottom of the 9th and they choked. I'm not a Redsox fan but like all good baseball fans I do have the proper amount of hatred for the evil empire.

    Joe Torre was a fantastic manager in the early years. They had fire, pitching, played small ball, stole bases, hit home runs, was a lot of fun to watch. Joe had complete control of the team. Unfortunately the Yankee organization have never trusted their managers. They never trusted Torre, Girardi, or Boone. Thank you Mr Torre for the memories. Top notch.

      Yes he should. He's more a business man or politician type. He has no feel for the game, and probably resents the fact you can't manage a sports team the way you would a business or a political office. In that sense he's a perfect embodiment of Steinbrenner. George could never accept and always resented that baseball was/is a business that requires a specific acumen, one that takes years and years to develop.

    Even though he missed out on a 5th WS, it was probably best he left. Team was getting old and they were getting away a bit from some of the older core players from the early 2000s teams. Sometimes teams want to bring a younger coach who younger players feel understands them. Also Arod still felt a type of way after Torre put him in the bottom of the order during the previous year's playoffs. Even though it was the right move, players of ARods caliber, who were always the best at every level feel like it;s a disrepect to not have them high in the order even if they go 0 for 30.
    One of my cousins was a phenomenal player in high school. One of the best I've ever seen. He once told me that he switched high schools after sophomore year and his new team batted him 7th the first game and he said he was so mad he almost left. I told him I understand where his coach came from. You want to use the players you already have some trust for at least at first and depending how the first few games go then he should make the necessary changes. Of course my cousin said after the 2nd game of the season he was back at the top of the order. My cousin was nowhere near the player ARod was, so imagine how ARod felt in his 11th season after multiple 40+ homerun seasons and multiple MVPs. Not saying it's right to feel that way, but just saying.

    When Torre lost Zimmer as bench coach he was exposed. Torre was great at keeping the team even keeled and shepherding big personalities through the year. He was not a great X's and O's guy. I blame him for 2001 lost world series and 2004 against red sox. When it came to playoff time he stopped trusting his bullpen and only used Rivera and one other guy like a Tanyon Sturze - he burned them out. And I screamed at the TV in 2001 when he had the infield in in the 9th with Rivera on the mound. The only hits Rivera gave up then were flares off the fist. If Jeter was even with the bag he'd have caught Gonzalez's flare.

If you don't, you'll be on the hot seat. Steinbrenner had no problem paying the price, but he wanted results every year. If Torre felt George and the situation was too stressful, he should've just quit. But he didn't; he just whined about it. The Rays have been close, but always run out of gas. And it’s never been about how much money you spend, it’s about how you spend it. The Yankees could offer me $25M and I would take it, but I would be awful. Something needs to be said about the ability to put the together the right combination of players. The Yankees made Joe Torre, not the other way around. I really like Torre and think he's a class act but does anyone really think they wouldn't have won all those World Series between 96-2000 if Showalter, Hargrove or Piniella wasn't the manager? I mean seriously, how hard is it to fill out a lineup with all stars all over the field, then hand the ball to either Wells, Clemens, Pettitte, Cone, Mussina, Key and then hand it to Mo to finish off the game? Love Torre but I think he got a bit too full of himself and stuck around 2-3 years too long. Ditto with Girardi.

    • @timmysullivan2515
      @timmysullivan2515 6 років тому +12

      Keena Eh, there are other managers who have done far less with more talent. You're correct in saying that Torre inehrited a great team after Showalter was fired, but Torre was still a crucial figure. What about Bobby Cox? Three Hall of Fame starting pitchers, a Hall of Fame third baseman, Fred McGriff, Andruw Jones, etc., and the Braves won just one championship during his tenure. With managers, it's about what they can get out of the talent they're given, regardless of the circumstances. Torre did a fine job.

      Keena You are incredibly ignorant. First off, Mike Mussina was never on the team from ‘96-‘00. And he has never won a World Series so why would you mention him? Idiots don't realize that a good manager is crucial to the tone and culture of the team. It's not just xs and os. In baseball it's about managing pitchers and setting the culture. Torres was definitely critical in that way.

      @@Tee-OhBee I didn't know a woman with a 168 IQ is "incredibly ignorant". I became a Branch Manager for Citibank at 21 years old, the youngest person to ever do that in the company's history and became a Regional Manager by 23 years old and make more money per year than you could ever dream of. I also speak four languages fluently.
      I also have forgotten more about Yankees history than you ever knew in the first place. As far as Mike Mussina goes, I don't recall ever saying he won a World Series in New York. Which is kind of my point. Even post 2000, the Yankees still had a great rotation that included Mike Mussina but Joe Torre couldn't win a World Series with him. Or as Mike McGrath calls him, "Joe Torres".
      I absolutely love Joe Torre and wish he could've won 2-3 more rings with the Yankees. But sometimes Managers become ineffective when they stick around too long, which Torre, oops, sorry Mike McGrath, "Torres" sort of did. I think he should've retired or even been fired after choking away that 3-0 Series lead in 2004 to the disgusting, POS, Boston Red Sox. That was the lowest moment for the Yankees in their otherwise glorious history and, ahem... Joe Torres was the one in charge. With all due respect to Mike McGrath of course!
