Wow I’m feeling lucky I guess. A month ago I got a low mileage 2016 Fatboy Lo mostly because it fit my 29” inseam so well but also thought it looked pretty sweet.
I’m 62 years old and not in the best physical shape but this bike rides like a dream for me. It literally feels like it floats over imperfections in the road and I’ve taken it over all the bad roads in my area. Now in all fairness I have a 2004 sporty I bought new so have been on that for the past twenty years but my Fatboy has the stock seat and I can ride all day with no discomfort. No issues with finding N either. I agree with you these bikes look better without any addons but to me most bikes that come without bags and other accessories look best without. I like road tripping so will set it up with a shield. Anyway, it just goes to show that we are all different and motorcycles aren’t one fits all. Enjoy your new LRST.

Got me a 21 fat boy 114. Having the same transmission neutral issue, dealer never told me that issue comes with the fat boy. Have a 2018 street glide the transmission is silky smooth. Suffering the same seat issue, a real butt buster, got a saddleman solo seat for it. Gotta pay attention to the curves but manageable. Gotta gave the windshield

      @@zeus9855 I’m telling you brother,
That neutral issue is SOOOOO annoying. I would spend an entire traffic light cycle trying to find neutral, every time. Is the saddleman solo a good improvement over the stock seat? I personally felt like the bike didn’t look good with a windshield - but I think part of the problem is there aren’t many good options out there (very little aftermarket windshields for the FatBoy 114). Ride safe my bro 🤙

Yea that neutral issues so bad I romped the outer primary cover. I wanted to take a look see what was going on. Nothing to see the clutch friction, and steels weren’t warped. I bought drag clutch springs which turned out to be about between one, and two coils shorter. It seemed to help with that issue but will need to ride it more. It’s nice knowing it’s a common issue not just mine. The front brake hard use pulls the bike bike that direction. Good luck with your new bike!

sorry, pal! I have a 22 Fatboy and it’s one of the best bikes I’ve ever owned in regards to the handling if you know how to ride a bike and countersteer this bike can take any curve. I whip this thing around the curves like it’s a low rider and I never even thought about get yourself a saddleman or a drag specialties predator three and you can ride 24 straight hours and not feel anything. In this 114 get yourself the SNS 465 cam chest package and this bike is a torque monster!get a 2 into Bassani Rd. rage throw a Thundermax tuner in there and you got yourself a beast of a bike. Love my 2019 Fatty! Wouldn't trade it for anything. Some of your points I agree with, some not. You are bang on when you say that the bike is stand alone alone beautiful. Whenever my wife and I reach our destination the windshield and bags are left in the hotel room. I also somewhat agree with the handling in corners. The bike does have a tendency to want to stand up through faster corners. But I don't think that is due to the width of the tires. I believe (though this is just my opinion) it is due to the mass of the wheels; a greater gyroscopic effect than a lighter wheel. But I still love the twisties; it just takes a different approach than my sport bike. Anyways, new sub, like your work, take care.

  • @kididaho92
    @kididaho92 4 місяці тому +1

I watched this wondering if the 5 arguments for why you're trading matched with mine, and they did. I bought my Fat Boy in 2018, and like you, fell in love quickly. In a straight line, even on the interstate, I never needed a windshield. Crosswinds and trucks did make mine a bit of an air hockey puck, but I could live with that.
Once I paid it off, I traded it on an Indian Chieftain for mostly the reasons you mentioned. Even after owning it for 6 years and riding regularly, the bike still wanted to fight me around corners. I got used to it, but didn't like it. My new bike weighs nearly 150 lbs. more and turns like a freaking sport bike. The shorter rake helps, but the clearance is better, and I was so used to having to work harder to keep the Fat Boy focused I had to reprogram my approach to turns.
I had good luck with the Sundowner, but yes, the stock seat is garbage. The mono-shock suspension isn't horrible, and I appreciated the rotary adjustment, but the short travel and Harley's tried and true "okay but nothing special" approach to suspension parts made my retired powerlifter back hate life sometimes. You're more likely to win the lottery than find neutral when the motor's running. I managed only a couple times and should have given myself a prize. Typically I'd have to cut the motor to get neutral, and that was only when needing to dig in my pocket for the garage door opener.
The only thing I'll add is riding longer distances also bothered my hands; even after adding grip puppies and making sure my grip was relaxed. Far smoother than my old Dyna with the Twin Cam 103, but enough to make my hands feel like they were asleep for nearly an hour after riding. That's mostly me getting older, but you know, if I want to ride, then I have to do something different. It didn't bother me as much when I first got it, but I didn't have to drive as far to work.
All that being said, the bike was mostly a joy. Not many of those around, it said it could kick your ass without having to say anything, and even kept stock, the bike never lacked pickup when called upon. Motor never gave me any issues, and in spite the few beefs you mentioned, I was sad trading him in. I would have been happy with a Street or Road Glide, too, but I like the 4.5" of travel, the rear Fox air shock and got too good a deal on the Chieftain. I love the new bike, but as I said, that's more me fitting myself into the right bike for my personal needs. I know someone will be very happy with the Fat Boy if they're mostly riding it around town and can live with the minor quirks I wasn't crazy about.
Good luck on your new ride, and thanks for sharing!

@@kididaho92 I love the insight into your similarities with my experience. I know what you mean about over working or over exaggerating the setup to get through curves on the Fat Boy - when I test rode the Low Rider ST it was like a whole different world, almost like I was ready to throw the bike into the other lane but didn’t need to because I was so used to the over compensating with the Fatty.
It really broke my heart to part ways with the Fat Boy, but like you my back was screaming for mercy! I also can relate to the hands going numb - I actually experienced that as well and the Sundowner seat only made it worse for me. That’s one of the reasons I went back to the stock seat.
Neutral never got any better for me- such a point of frustration on a daily basis.
One day I’d love to get a Fatboy as a second bike but not for my main ride. There’s no better cool factor than the Fat Boy in my opinion but I need to be able to keep riding even if I’m not on the most stylish bike.
The Chieftain is an awesome bike! I hope it serves you well in the future! God bless and ride safe! 🤙

Yep, neutral is a bastard on mine too. And the seat is an instrument of torture. But I kind of like the challenge of the 'awkward' handling. I also think it a thing of beauty; definitely a bike that I look back at as I close the garage door. One thing you get with the Fatboy, which is missing from many other bikes, is a sense of occasion when you're riding it. I'm lucky enough to have another bike to ride when the weather is bad, or I just need to get somewhere with minimal fuss and an easy ride, and I wouldn't have a Fatboy as my only bike.
I look forward to seeing what you get next.
