  • Sudbury Hall is a great old hall and museum that is aimed squarley at getting children interested in history. In my previous video I went around the attached Museum of Childhood and in this one I go around the hall itself.
In a departure from a usual walk, Sudbury hall is focussed squarely on bein entertaining for kids. There are great artworks and displays but there is so much more for kids today. As a bloke in his 40's walking around by himself I thought it better if I don't play with the interactive objects so much.
At time of visiting a lot of the hall was closed for winter. In fact the weekend I visited was the only one where it was open before closing for over a month for annual maintainence. And to get all the Christmas trees down I guess.
Sudbury Hall is located between Uttoxeter and Burton right on the border of Derbyshire. It's easily accesabile by the A50 main road. There are lots of facilities on site including Cafe, Toilets, Shop and of course the whole Childrens museum.
Here is the National Trust site for the hall: www.nationaltr...

Oh, to skip down that staircase in a long flowing dress in the 1700 hundreds. My head just exploded seeing this home. There are no words

I think similar things as well. Although I'm all about the relaxing in the library aesthetic or sitting in front of an open fire with a brandy.

Was nice. I'm a little old fashioned in that I like my stately homes a bit quieter but it was still fun.

I do like it when you see places you recognise in movies. When I visited Benthall Hall I spotted it in the movie Enola Homes a few days later:

The National Trust do a great job of preserving these great old houses however this house has not been improved by the National Trust ... I remember visiting 20 years ago when it was still bursting with beautiful furniture and it retained its authentic appearance. The removal of furniture and the addition of speech bubbles to paintings and "interactive" installations throughout is such a mistake. The museum of childhood in the outbuildings is brilliant but the house should not have been experimented upon to try and create a childrens play house... That said the staircase is still breathtaking as is the long gallery [speech bubbles aside] Thank you for taking us around with you I enjoyed seeing the house again...

I actually agree with you. Last time I was here was pre-pandemic in the summer and the main hall seemed a lot better. I believe there were more rooms open and I remember it being more traditional. It's possible they were just partially open as they closed the day after for a month for maintenance. I may pop back in the summer and see if it's any better.

@OutWithABrew yes we are going back in spring , the house should be fully open by then... I do hope that at some point they reinstate the house to how it was when they took it on... the NT was set up to preserve these houses for the public not to tamper with their integrity... the furniture that was removed is in store unseen which is crazy , the collections in these places bought over centuries form part of their history... Best wishes 😊

I'm usually quite on side with the NT, like at Shugborough where they have done some good work bringing things back from a bit of neglect. But Sudbury seems to have the shift more to the courtyard and children's areas and away from the house. Which is a shame.

Appreciated your video and seeing around Sudbury hall, what a nice lady that was showing you around, good to hear they are reopening on the 10th. Seems like they are really pushing kid friendly etc on the place, i was having a little read of the comment below and agree. I personally would love to have seen it's origins with how it would have looked. That grand staircase is truly something spectacular and i liked the walkway with the books too. Some incredible paintings, you can tell this would have been quite the mansion back in its heyday, i still enjoyed a wander with you, thank you!!

I know from your videos that you like walking around a good old ruin / castle as well. But when I get a place thats still fully intact I like to soak in the luxury a bit. I think visiting again in the spring or summer will be better and hopefully there is more of the old stuff opened up.

Ahh the days children were presented shortly to their parents and then whisked back away to the nursery…….this place looks and sounds like a kindergarten

It was a bit odd that the actual museum of Childhood next door was quieter. Perhaps it's just that this was the last day it was open for the Chirstmas holidays?

Хороший музей . Жаль , что люди топают своей обувью старинный паркет и ковры.

Согласен, во многих старых местах заставляют носить защитную обувь. Я думаю, что заставить детей делать это может быть довольно сложно.
