Out With A Brew
United Kingdom
Приєднався 8 вер 2023
Ruins, gardens, grand halls, ancient sites and folklore.
I'm Ellis and I like going for walks and often with a brew of some description. Although I've been visiting places for years I've recently started to film my walks so hopefully other people can enjoy / experience them. Even more recently I've started doing other videos where I go over the folklore, myths and legends of some of the places I visit.

In the centre of thte town of Sandbach stand the Sandbach Crosses. two incrictly carved sandstone Anglo Saxon Crosses that have stood since the 9th century. Depicting scense animals and scenes from Christianity they were once painted and inlaid with jewels. But despite the ravages of time they are still an impressive sight. While visiting the crosses I also took a small trip to the nearby churc...
SEATON DELAVAL HALL: Elegant shell conceals a fire damaged hall. The site of historical mischeif

North of Newcastle and on the coast lies Seaton Delaval Hall. Belonging to the Delaval family it was essentialy the Great Gatsby of Georgian England. With the greatest parties, the most extravagent excesses and the craziest pranks (keep an eye out for the room turned literally upside down). Despite it's past of mischief and revelery it was also the site of misfortune. Including the fire 200 yea...
FIVE MINUTE FOLKLORE: Mysteries of the KNIGHTS TEMPLAR

Shrouded in mystery, the powerful knights templar order was destroyed some 700 years ago. But their legacy and ruins have continued to pique the interest of mystery hunters and conspiracy theorists for generations. Inspired by my trip to the lonely Templar Tower in rural Lincolnshire, I have catalogued my favorite Knights templar myths and legends Angevin - Thatched Villagers by Kevin MacLeod i...
CRESSWELL PELE TOWER: 15th century coastal tower built to protect against the Border Reivers
Переглядів 6321 день тому
Very quick video this week featuring the Cresswell Pele Tower. One of a series of Pele Towers built in Northern England. They were setup to protect against the constant raids of the Border Reivers that plagued the English / Scottish border. The tower at Cresswell is a very well preserved example of one of these towers. As it was situated just a 5 minute walk from my holiday residence and just a...
CRAGSIDE MANOR : The original house of tomorrow. One of the most beautiful places I have visited.

I talk without hyperbole when I say that this is one of the most beautiful houses I have visited in the UK. The setting in the hills of the north of England is just perfect. It's courtyard and gardens are exceptional. Inside you have an amazing long gallery and the most impressive fireplace I've ever seen. To top it all off it's got enough Victorian engineering to set any Steampunk fans heart a...
LINDISFARNE PRIORY: Dramatic ruins on Holy Island. Also site of the raid that began the Viking Age
Переглядів 164Місяць тому
While visiting Holy Island you have the Majestic Castle, the cute puffins and of course the dramatic priory. The site goes down in history as being where one of the most infamous viking raids on Britain occured. The attack on Lindisfarne is often cited as beginning the great viking age and almost 300 years of Norse influence on the British Isles. Now we have the remains of the medievel priory e...
LINDISFARNE CASTLE: Once a fort. Then a Edwardian manor home. Now a sometimes inaccessible beauty.
Переглядів 445Місяць тому
Situated on a rocky outcrop just metres away from the sea. This beautiful building looks like something out of a fantasy film or a fairy tale. Although it was an active garrison for hundreds of years it was eventually turned in a magical home. I am slightly sorry about the long walk up to the castle but it was a beautiful day and the views across the bay were wonderful. Also the journey up to t...
WROXETER ROMAN CITY: 2000 year old remains of one of the largest Roman cities in Britain.
Переглядів 385Місяць тому
Just shy of 2000 years ago the Roman Empire started it's conquest of the British Isles. For 400 years after, the majority of the country would remain under their rule. Despite being on the most northern frontiers of the empire, the Romans built great cities and fortifications in the country. At one point, the fourth largest city was Viroconium Cornoviorum, or what is now known as Wroxeter in Sh...
LICHFIELD CATHEDRAL: Majestic 13th Century Cathedral in a small Midlands City

As I continue to rehabilitate my bad leg I took a small walk around the majestic Lichfield Cathedral. This impressive building absolutely dominates the skyline around the small city. With it's impressive 3 spires and numerous statues and carvings, it's a great place to visit. Out of respect for the people who were praying inside I did not want to film inside the building. #cathedral #midlands #...

Kinver Edge is a sandstone ridge situated in the middle of England near Kidderminster and Stourbridge. Settlement goes back centuries with an iron age hill fort occupying one of the nearby rises. WAYNE MANOR: Ok it's actually SUTTON SCARSDALE HALL that appeared in Batman Vs Superman

Lying about 30 minutes out side of Gotham (Nottinghamshire) lies the stately ruins of Wayne Manor. Or at least the building that portrayed it in the 2016 film "Batman versus Superman: Dawn of Justice". While the inside is now gutted and empty and I couldn't find a bat cave, it was still a great place to visit. There were great views over the Derbyshire countryside all the way to Bolsover Castle...

Thank you for sharing. They do look very impressive and the church is beautiful ❤
That's really an awesome place. Beautiful Norman architecture. Love the 1727 signature you found. Thank you for posting
I like how in 300 years (at least) base instinct to carve your name into things is still going strong.
You can fell it was really a place. Tons of windows. The detailing around the arches. Gorgeous. And the countryside is also beautiful. Easy to see people wanting to live there. Looks like very rich soil. Thank you.
It really is a lovely bit of Shropshire. I'm just sad I never got to see the place in it's full glory.
Thank you for sharing, a great relaxing Sunday afternoon watch ❤
Could listen to your five minute folklores for hours! Great and interesting video, enjoyed hearing about the knights templar!
Enjoyed this, thank you for sharing ❤
Baphomet, nice.
A lovely friendly goat demon :)
@@OutWithABrew ... makes me think of Dragnet. 🙂
Hi there... a wonderful old tower in a great setting! Thanks for sharing
What a charming pele tower! This is cool to see and unusual too! Enjoyed the evening wander of yours around this impressive location. Shame it was locked, but those views surrounding the tower are just so beautiful. I like that you can see the outlines of the previous building attached to the tower too. Such a pretty evening for a sunset too, that was awesome to see. Thank you for sharing, hope you're well!
Doing good thank you! Happy to be back out there after my leg has healed :)
Thank you for sharing. Looks very impressive and the beach is beautiful ❤
It was just a five minute walk from the caravan I was staying in. So a nice surprise. I spent the next hour or so watching the sunset with a beer on the beach :)
I really enjoyed your video, one of the few that shows a good overview of the taxidermy collection of this fabulous house!
I was astounded by just how much taxidermy was in there. Have you visited?
@@OutWithABrew Yes! I went a few weeks ago, I actually live in South Africa and was visiting a friend in Staffordshire. I simply ADORED the house and wished I had photographed the taxidermy in more detail. I was looking for a video to make up for it and yours was the only one which really shows it. Afterall it was the last generations passion, and I suspect what led to the end of the family line...since socialising is nb to meeting spouses and having future heirs...so it was like this obsession killed the family along with the terrible taxes, since they became so introverted. I think the National Trust has done a superb job in keeping in the state it was found in. A person in Staffordshire I was staying with said his brother worked for 8 years as part of the team that made the building structurally sound and then recreated and preserved all the cracks , paintwork and original wall paper in their various states of disrepair. I think the taxidermy and natural collection should be photographed in detail and put into a single video or document for natural collectors to see as it is work of art in its own right and really what convinced the National Trust to save the building...according to what I was told by one of the guides.
It is both a shame to see the house in the state of disrepair in some places, but also very interesting. It was certainly unique. But yes, it was the taxidermy that really caught my eye here. So many places have beautiful art or furniture but very few have proper taxidermy and almost none have it to this scale and detail. I wonder how many more hidden gems like this are about and yet to be discovered.
@@OutWithABrew The house has been restored...it has been put back to look like it hasn't been...I don't think anyone will beat this collection of taxidermy because this was unique to the two son's and father's obsession! People brought them dead animals...or gave them specimens...I would love to know more about who did the actual taxidermy, surely not done by themselves?!
Just found your channel, really wonderful, thank you.
Hey! Thanks for the like and sub. Sorry I need to do some more Folklore vids. But I hope you enjoy the rest!
Really enjoyed this We visited Holy Island late August Last year. Stunning place Hope you've had a lovely day ❤
Just wished I could have taken longer there before the tide chased me away.
Thank you
What an amazing house. Love this. Thank you ❤
Thanks Ellis, it is wonderful to revisit the White Horse through this video. This used to be my stomping ground (the local pub was excellent) & as a kid I learnt to toboggan down Dragon Hill on a tray. A walk along The Ridgeway would be a worthy trek indeed :))
I popped to see the White Horse on the way back home from visiting a friend. Because of that it was slightly later in the day so I didn't have as much time to enjoy it as I wanted. I need to go back one day and do the full tour and maybe a trip to the forge.
Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed.
Enjoyed this. Thank you for sharing ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
I must be too old to watch your videos😊you move to fast for me
Ah, I'm sorry. I did start to use a different filming method a little after this that is hopefully a bit smoother. Have a look at Stokesay Castle and let me know if it's any better. ua-cam.com/video/qGt0aZIMjpg/v-deo.html
Well filmed, I really smelt the ozone, felt the wind and loved the fact there was no music and no commentary, it wasn't needed. Well done. From France.
Thanks for that. I much more of a fan of the natural sounds as well. Gets a good feel for the place you are watching
@@OutWithABrew Bonne journée à vous!
It was worth the walk to see this wonderful castle. Looks very impressive. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes Dave and Dawn ❤️
It was possible the last sun the UK is going to get for the forseeable future as well. Had to make the most of it.
Beautiful, but who would want to live in such an isolated place.
I've had a couple of nights of noisy neighbours where an isolated island fort seem like a good idea.
Er ... monks, maybe. Cheers.
@@MartinCanada The next video is the monastary (or the ruins of it at least) where the monks lived on Lindisfarne. Although they did have a bit of a rough time of it due to Vikings.
@@OutWithABrew Looking forward to it. I walked the causeway to Holy Island some 35 years ago during a vacation spent in the Borders. A wonderful time though I was completely ignorant then of the historical and cultural importance of the abbey and its community. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
An excellent wander! Thank you for taking us around such an interesting site. I was quite blown away seeing the scale of the place, a great visit beautifully filmed! Thank you again
It's tiny considering the size of the original city. Now that would have been a sight!
@@OutWithABrew very true! Would love to do Pompeii!!

Thanks for the comment. Exactly right, people don't tune in to see my ugly mug or voice. Let the building do the talking :)
The cobble courtyard looks like Harry Potter world at Universal in Orlando.
I've never been to Orlando but I can imagine it. The building does have that wonky Harry Potter esque look. Have you been to "The Shambles" in York? The street that Diagon alley was based on.
@@OutWithABrew I have not! I should check it out.
Thank you so much for the journey around this amazing fortified manor. Too far for me to travel down from Scotland and I don't have the energy to walk around all day. Really appreciated the tour without getting out of breath or my limbs hurting. Thanks again 10/10
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Part of why I film is to give people who can't visit these places a chance to experience them. Similar videos from people in Japan and America got me through lockdown.
But its not a 'horse' is it. If you join the dots, as it were, it is the constellation of Leo, plus or minor a few stars.
Even if it's based on that constellation, we have no idea what they called it back then. Probably not Leo, as there were never any lions in Britain.
It's very possible that it's based on the constellation. But perhaps the original creators did it for that but instead of a lion they saw a horse in the stars? The depiction is noted as being similar to other celtic images which definitely relate to horses. But due to it's age that image might have been superimposed onto whatever the original creators intended. It's at least been referred to as a horse since the 11th century.
Now this is a beautiful cathedral! The walk upto it reminds me of Hereford but wow, impressive absolutely. Love the carvings surrounding the outside, so very regal. When you panned to the spire you really can see the size and height of it. Thank you for sharing this with us!
Great video, really enjoyed it... such an impressive building! Thanks for sharing 😊
Thank you for uploading your video. I used to live in Stafford from 1965 until 2004. Since 1976, Hyde Lea, Coppenhall and Butterhill Crossroads have always had a sacred place within my soul. They shall always remain so.
Love the walk up to the cathedral. A great view as you walk up the street and it's even more impressive when you see it close up. Like the elephant sculpture. A lovely area. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes Dave and Dawn ❤️
I used to live on the farm at the end of your video back in the mid-70s. Great memories of my childhood playing all round those fields and buildings
It's a great place. I live in Rising Brook and having this beautiful area just a stones throw away was a godsend during lockdown. It must have been great living on the farm.
do you know whats funny my name is Kinver 🤣🤣🤣😂
Sorry to hear that you have had an accident. Hope you are improving well. Thank you for sharing your walk. Looks like a lovely place. Hope your weekend goes well. Best wishes Dave and Dawn ❤️
Thanks for the well wishes. Deffo on the mend now. Just being stuck in the house for a couple of weeks and itching to get out :)
Very nice. I'm interested why the lower rooms are so well done, considering ground floor traditionally for servants storage and kitchens.
I believe some of the old kitchen and storage area is now the tea room which I didn't go in. It's also a bit of an oddity as the owners were quite wealthy but not massively. So where big halls like Shugborough or Keddleston got renovated and grew bigger and bigger over the years. Little Moreton just stayed the same. Which is great because it really makes it stand out.
Lovely place to visit - went there recently - thanks for sharing
One of our local historic houses! It changes with the seasons... love the Great chamber and Long Gallery always wow moments! Thanks for showing it through your eyes 😊
One of our favourite places to visit. Wonderful inside and some lovely walks. Thank you for the tour. Hope your week is going well. Best wishes Dave and Dawn ❤️
Thank you for sharing 😊 Realky makes you think how harsh and hard life was back in time. Have a great week 😊 Morgs Jo and Boo 🐕
Absolutely. I still don't know if this place was a good idea of actually trying to help people or some sort of punishment / way to get cheap labour. It's very hard to judge by todays standards.
Haddon Hall - highly recommended!!
A couple of people have recommended that to me. May have to have a trek down next time the weather is nice! Thanks for the suggestion.
How about Haddon Hall? Lots of history and a list of films and TV shot there. Well worth a visit.
That may very well be on the list. Not too far away and it looks gorgeous!
What a great idea for a video. Really enjoyed this. Best wishes Dave and Dawn ❤️
Aye, was a bit of fun. It's cool to see the places and go "I recognise that from Batman!"
What an interesting place! We enjoyed your video... thankyou 😊
Would you ever consider living in the cave?
@OutWithABrew only if it was fitted out like a glamping pod lol 😆 have you been to thd hermits cave at Dale abbey ? I'm always amazed how folk lived in these places...
Thank you for the tour of this impressive castle. Really enjoyed this Hope you're having a good weekend 😊
Aside from the bee's (and the lack of furniture) I could see myself living there as a feudal lord :)
I could live there no problem 😊
Honestly it was a lot cosier than I expected. Almost like a little hobbit hole

It's honestly worth a look around if you get the chance. I zoom through a bit on my videos but you can certainly take some more time to chill out up there.
