Actually they aren't, they just inhabit a very small area, but have a healthy population in that area. The only danger that poses a significant threat to the population is if a disease gets introduced or if people keep building over their habitats
They have a breeding population in the UK because they let them keep a couple of them as pets and breeders bread and so commonly that they're pretty cheap snakes out there
SUPER-mega-ULTRA like this video. 54 year old dude in Willamette Valley Oregon. I have been catching/releasing and observing the Herps here in Oregon since I was a larvae. Diadophis regalis, Contia tenuis, Charina bottae, Thamnophis ordinoides, Pituophis cattenifer, Coluber constrictor etc. It was cool as heck to see a nice family enjoying this stuff!
Thanks so much! Really appreciated. I have other videos like it on my channel. I haven’t herped in Oregon...yet. I do have a couple of Puget Sound Garter videos from Washington. Thanks again, it’s really appreciated!
You know for kids that age it's great that they still want to do stuff with their parents. That SanFran garter snake looks pretty snazzy, glad you got to see one in the wild like that!
FingerLakesHerps thanks so much. Yeah, the boa was cool, but the garter was unreal looking in person. I don't think the video does it justice. Thanks for commenting.

I randomly stumbled upon your channel from my recommendations and have just binge watched I don't know how many of your videos through the night. Reminded me of why I kept snakes as a youth. Fascinating stuff. All the best from England.
Welcome! I just put out a new one today. I hope you like what you see. I try and make the videos more about the whole experience, not just the snakes. If I get to England, I'll try and find the few snake species there. Thanks again, Lou
I hear theres literally less than 900 SF Garters left in the wild, how lucky are you, to capture such amazing footage of 1 out of 900, that's insanity, and lucky, all in the same moment. WOW!
Yeah, I feel so lucky to have witnessed one. I didn’t realize their numbers were that small. So sad. Hopefully they’ll be around for future generations, but I’m not sure that’ll be the case.
I used to see so many San Francisco Garter Snakes growing up in San Francisco. Well, I mostly saw them in the Peninsula, but when I got into herping I had no idea they were on the endangered species list and was wondering why I hadn't seen them in so long. I was born in 1971 so by 1990 (almost 20 years later!) it's amazing how much can change. I do hope preservationists are helping to reverse their status. Beautiful snake. Probably the only good looking animal in all of SF and that includes the residents.
Hey Lou, great find and just a shame they are endangered. Great to see your family getting involved too especially with your wife's high viz shoes. Great clip.
Way cool!! Your family was very kind and understanding to allow us, non-family members, to come along on the expedition. Thank your family very much, LouB747, from us, okay?
I was just recalling my Boyhood and going Snake and Lizard Hunting, and I just learned about the San Francisco Garter Snake, so Clicked on your Video. Thank you!
Wow. Really jealous. I’ve lived in the Bay Area my entire life and NEVER seen a snake in the wild. Much less a rare one. And I have done a bit of looking. I’ve seen many lizards. Many many lizards. Also newts/salamanders, frogs, and turtles. But never a snake…. I hope to one day but have kinda given up on trying. Just not in the cards for me. I like to take pics of animals and then sketch the animals later using the photos. Reptiles are definitely my favorite to do. Thank You so much for sharing this. Yea, please keep the area secret. It saddens me that so many of our animals in the world are so close to being gone forever. May not be very long till all these are gone and watching this video will be one of the only ways to see them.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Try April and look under objects. Snakes are rarely found out crawling. Rocks, old boards, metal signs, etc. Let me know how you do. It's my pleasure sharing. It is sad seeing are animals slowly disappearing. So sad.
How nice that your children are so not afraid of snakes. When I was a kid growing up in San Francisco (actually, Daly City), we used to occasionally catch garters which hung out in a blackberry patch behind the city corporation yard. Lots of ponds with frogs and tadpoles swimming everywhere. It's probably been filled in by now. (That was back in the early 50's)
Thanks Bob. Yeah, the garters seem to really like blackberry bushes. I'm sure a lots changed since the early 50s! Love the bay area! Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Great video Lou- First I have ever seen live footage of San Fran Garter snake- incredibly beautiful snake. Congrats on spotting one-I understand they are pretty difficult to find!
That SURE WAS A NICE FAMILY OUTING , and even better that you all left them in there environment especially the San Francisco Gardner snake seeing as that they are endangered
0:29 I see a new trend coming in the herp world. San Fran garter!! Nice, definitely on the bucket list. And a rubber boa to boot?!? Nice family outing I'd say. Thanks for sharing.
My mom used to rescue them all the time because our kitties would bring them into the house when I was a baby. That was 50 years ago in 1969-1970. She loved them. We lived in a neighborhood called Diamond Heights in San Francisco. It was a very woodsy area.
Awww such a cute first find. No way, that is definitely and angry tongue flick. Straight up and straight down is a PO'd snake! That's a warning! Regular in and out with a little up and down is just smelling, the long tongue flicks holding down or up is definitely not the same!
That was a nice ending speech. A lot of people don’t know they have to check with a game warden or local wildlife office before they can remove animals....Emily from Snake Discovery had a video where they came upon a lake with thousands of goldfish in them. She checked with the wildlife people to see if she could take some home to feed her turtles (she does shows for kids showing turtles, snakes, etc). They said yes as long as she froze the fish before taking them home.
Yeah, they are cool snakes. I've seen a few before, so didn't video this one much. Here's a previous boa find in Yosemite ua-cam.com/video/VxChXAgUUT0/v-deo.html

@@loub747 I actually live south. On the border of San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties. I suppose it could have been a different species cause im certainly no expert.
