Has anyone noticed that whenever he appeared on The Tonight Show that no matter the brand of (badly tuned) backline drums that the top hi-hat cymbal always had a Rogers clutch? :)
I think you are correct. I remember seeing that set in Johnny's office. Buddy used that set on another time he played with a piano, bass, drum trio and he played with brushes. It's somewhere here on UA-cam.
There's a clip of that somewhere on here (or used to be). Buddy was sweating bullets and wincing throughout his solo. But still tore it up like the champ he was.

He also played a five piece kit in this guesting.

Excellent camera angle (side view).
New hairpiece but still kicking butt! Nice performance.

The "Ayyyy" joke was directed at trombonist Bruce Paulson, who was in Buddy's band in the early 70s before he joined the "NBC Orchestra."
Not in this case. I'm quite certain Buddy was referring to bass player Joel DiBartolo.
