40 years + in Alaska and I have taken a bunch of moose. One of the best breakdowns of the differences in DIY moose hunts. There are a number of unscrupulous air taxi services who really don't provide you with ANY chance of a moose. Ask for references and make calls. And the advice on knowing the law is spot on!!! AK game laws are complex and unforgiving.

If you watch this you should listen to what he says, i have been looking into a DYI hunt for over a year and he is dead on, also you have to think about when you meat gets back to the bush plane airport, transporting it to a butcher and paying for that to be processed and if your flying the meat back to Fairbanks that cost to, than if your flying the meat to the lower 48 or are you donating to the local food bank. Than the cost of flying the horns home. These are just some of the cost i have found, I wish the video would of came out a year ago to help with the leg work i have done so far. Again great video and thanks for the info.

I fish Naknek every year, Out of the Peter Pan cannery on the north side. I heard of a guide on the south side that took someone out and about into the tundra, came back near the dump, shot a dump bear, then went through the tundra again to get back.

Very nice and easy way to understand what to expect in a DIY hunt. Thank you for being honest about it. I hope to hunt with you one day

FYI Rafting guide courses (8 Days of training) and the white water rafting rescue course (2-day training) only cost $650. If you do want to do a float hunt, that is a relatively cheap way to not get into a stupid situation.

My brother went hunting in a Cessna 150. He knew where all the 500 foot gravel strips were that had roads going into them. He would see a Moose and land and go hunt it, shoot it, process it, carry 30 pounds of meat back to the plane and fly back to Anchorage. He would pick me up in his car and drive out there and we would hike in and pack out all we could carry. Then we left what was left for the wolves. Good eaten meat, yum!

I had no idea bush planes cost so much. Been 20 years since I've been in one and that was on a Canada fishing trip all inclusive deal.

I am the military friend that wants to truck hunt out of Anchorage. Just don’t know exactly what it intales or the spots. Also only get 3 days off a week and would most likely be a 2 day hunt.

Good info, but basically, you're saying you need to pay for flight, which is bs. Residents can f off you can hunt from a truck/atv but it's not a high success unless you know the area. Float isn't that hard if you have some experience or food mind and body. Flights take like 2 to 3 years to book ate are very expensive now.
