  • The Alaskan tundra is home to unforgiving terrain, unending remoteness, and unpredictable weather. And for most, the thought of hunting the area is permanently behind a wall of excuses; it’s too far, it’s too expensive, it’s too difficult.
    But when you set your mind to something, when you dig deep and get creative, all things are achievable. Watch as Joe Griffin, a Michigan-native, sets out to prove this during his inaugural trip to the tundra in search of spot-and-stalk, do-it-yourself caribou hunting success.

    Freaking awesome video. I can afford a guide but to me that takes what is awesome about hunting out, the sense of adventure, discovery and challenges to find and harvest a animal. 2 months ago we watched a video on the Brooks range where they flew in on a guided hunt and after a little research we figured we can hike in from the highway. So awesome to see you do that exact thing and harvest a nice bull. Congrats and thank you for inspiring us to get off our couch and explore.

      Hey man. Get your perspective. That was my buddies garage that filmed it. I’ve got a Huffy 😂. But there are some gear items that I believe should be on the higher end of the price/quality spectrum. (Clothing/pack/stove/tent). You mention guides several times in this video. Guides are only required in Alaska for Brown Bears (Grizzlies) / Dall Sheep / Mountain Goats. Every other species does not require a guide and is often quite doable for an out-of-state DIY hunter as long as they do their research. Of course getting up here and getting around has a cost, but that's part of deal. As an aside, I used to work at a rental car place when I was in college and taking vehicles on the Dalton was specifically prohibited. I would say do what you did and bring an extra tire and wash the vehicle thoroughly (including the undercarriage) upon return. Nice video.

    I have a goal of taking my wife caribou hunting someday. She's had a vengeance against them ever since she worked at a petting zoo in a theme park and one stabbed her in the ass with it's antler. I looked up prices for a guided hunt the other day... yeah, I could buy a decent classic car for that price. But now I know it can be a DIY and suddenly it's back on the table. Thanks, you have a new subscriber.

    What's crazy is it's harder to draw an Iowa deer archery tag than it is to get hold of some western big game tags. As an Iowa resident I'm glad it is that way. Even though it takes 5 years to draw we still get a lot of out of state guys in the southern part

    Great video but a couple inconsistencies in the footage. If you can see the pipeline, you’re not outside the bow corridor. Also u haul charges $.80/mile so this rental was over $1000. Pretty realistic in terms of what the hunt is like.

    The area where the oil infrastructure is it’s basically a huge sanctuary for caribou and all other wildlife bec the animals are so well protected there. Alaska has probably done a better job at developing the North Slope than anywhere else in the world. Having both commercial fished and worked up north all of my adult life I can honestly say the culture surrounding the development up there is impeccable. One drop of oil on the ground is too much (can’t say the same about commercial fishing) but it is like working under a microscope

  • @bullwinklebrown283
    @bullwinklebrown283 2 роки тому

    I spend 1/2 of my time up there working on the slope. I personally see hundreds of caribou daily (sometimes thousands) polar bears, Fox, millions of birds (summer time). Sad how many people want to try and regulate the area and never spent any time there.

    Being from Alaska and knowing the regulations in that area, I seriously question weather you harvested that bull legally. There is a 5mi corridor from the highway. It doesn’t matter if you walk 9mi if you are within 5mi as the crow flies from the highway. To see the buildings in the background so close to the pipeline you more than likely broke the law.

    I would love a follow up shorter vid maybe going into some of the gear y’all used, some of the planning and strategy - use of resources/ tech , to plan and implement..
    Well done…
    I do want to know what jacket that is your wearing all the time., I need one and am looking for something similar if u have a second hit me back.

      Appreciate the nice words William! We are thinking about how to convey that information regarding gear, logistics, and resources for the hunt! The clothing system we used is by Forloh, a 100% made in USA company out of Whitefish, Montana. We used the AllClima System for rain gear and soft shells!

    I don’t get it…there’s not any area up there that close to oil infrastructure that’s not located in the Prudhoe Bay closed area…and shooting directly toward the pipeline..yikes. There is a reason for the 5 mile archery only corridor. I think the next chapter in your Alaska book is going to include the troopers.. 🤣
