I thought I was going to see a true replica, not a radio controlled model.

I wonder if the Thruster or the Whittaker were inspired by this? I believe it's regarded as one of the first microlights.
In Britain, some years ago, a replica was created of Percy Pilcher's aeroplane. Sadly he was killed when he crashed a hang glider, and never flew it, or he might have achieved a controlled, powered flight before the Wright Brothers. The replica was flown by a specialist pilot with extreme caution. At the time, I thought it would have been better to have used a dummy pilot of an appropriate weight, and flown it remotely.

What a brilliant design the Demoiselle was. I know the Wrights were six years earlier, but almost nothing from a Wright biplane is now used, whereas every key feature of the Demi is found in a modern lightplane: dihedral, cruciform tail at the rear; space-frame fuselage; decent size wheels....single prop at the front etc etc.

The first flight of a heavier-than-air aircraft ever captured by a camera and witnessed by a live audience was performed by the Brazilian inventor Alberto Santos Dumont in Paris in 1906. The Wright brothers' first public flight took place in 1908, using French engines. Before that, they had refused to fly in front of an audience. The reason the Wright brothers did not perform a public flight before 1908 was that they were not ready. In 1903, the only aircraft they had was a glider. The supposed first flight was not possible because they didn't have an engine powerful enough to lift off and sustain flight. That is the truth. The myth created around the Wright brothers as the "inventors" of the airplane only emerged in the 1940s after an extensive marketing campaign by the Smithsonian. Before that, Santos Dumont was considered the first to fly a heavier-than-air aircraft.

Actually, the Wright Brothers were trying to sell their aircraft to the U.S. Military for several years with no success before they eventually turned to the French.
Additionally, their 1903 aircraft was capable of taking off with sustained flight but they needed a guiding rail to avoid the friction of the skids on the sand slowing it down.
Alberto Santos Dumont did make one of the first big public exhibitions in 1906, but the Wright Brothers were already making regular public flights around Huffman Prairie all throughout 1904-05. The difference was that public interest in aviation was lacking at that time where they were.
