@doctoreyehealth, you might find it interesting, I have poor circulation in and out of my head (in a general sense not strictly blood) via my neck and have experienced significant increase in dryness since getting injured. You are correct! If higher amounts of pressure are applied to the surface of the eye for a period of time the cells on the surface of the cornea can be altered. This is usually transient but can induce a refractive change. We do this intentionally in the practice of orthokeratology.
Yes, years of chronic stress and serious sleep deprivation definitely started affecting my eyes. I've added some recommended supplements and have experienced a profound improvement in the length and quality of sleep with the added bonus of reduction in dry eye, eye strain, and even improved vision, plus a whole list of other improvements as well.
With chronic health issues tied to elevated stress and diagnosed PTSD, I can't remember the last time I had a full night's sleep. I do remember several years ago celebrating a night when I slept for 4 1/2 hours straight for the first time in over a decade. I've got a scleral band in one eye from 2002, and laser work in the other from a few years later. My latest check up found early glaucoma, and I had no idea that pressure would make me susceptible, on top of a family history. I've just discovered your channel, and hope to find anything I can do to help slow or even better, stop that from progressing. For those of us with sleep apnea, there's an added problem with air from CPAP machines further drying out our eyes if we tend to sleep with our eyes slightly ajar at any time during the night.
Wow that's certainly interesting! I have sleep apnea and sleep with a cpap. I had only been sleeping 3-4 hours a night. Have managed to increase it to 5-6 hours a night. Two things I think have improved my eye health along with many of your tips: listening to music that supports relaxation according to research and also use of an air purifier at night. My home's air tightness requires an HRV that circulates outdoor air 24/7. Challenge being I live near a rail yard and multiple construction sites. Between that and the smoke from Canada I suspect cleaning the air has also contributed to eye health for me. Sleep to relaxing music just to get you to that twilight zone on a regular schedule can't be rated high enough for eye health.
Yes. Dry eye has been a problem. During a 3 month period of prolonged high chronic knee pain (and very poor sleep as a result), my eyes became very dry. After months of physical therapy, knee pain is gone, sleep has been better and eye dryness has decreased about 90%
Thanks for the info doctor. I think it'd be also helpful to provide some tips for people whose schedule is the other way around, like working in the evenings until the morning, and wakes up at 4/5 pm just for necessity.

Sleep is vital for eye health and overall well-being. During sleep, the eyes undergo essential repair processes that help maintain their function and health. Adequate sleep helps keep the eyes lubricated and reduces the risk of eye irritation or dryness. It also supports the eyes' ability to replenish essential nutrients and eliminate debris, which can help prevent infections. Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to eye spasms, dry eyes, and increased sensitivity to light. Furthermore, lack of sleep can contribute to more severe eye conditions, such as glaucoma, by increasing intraocular pressure. Prioritizing good sleep hygiene is key to maintaining optimal eye health. For more health and wellness topics, check out the videos on our channel. 💚
Does that mean it’s not eye-healthy to sleep with eyes covered with sleeping eye masks or similar things, as doing so might prevent proper air circulation around the eyeballs? Whats really weird is I am waking up with dry eye, the time I would think they would be least dry. It does disappear pretty quickly after being up.

You might want to check out using castor oil on your eyelids. I know, it sounds silly. There are some videos about it. I am using it on my thin skin and it is sure helping with that.

I actually started using HEXANE FREE CASTOR OIL about 3-4 months ago. Every night before bed.... nothing different but I'm sure it takes time. I have til Dec 6 ...my eye exam... 👀

I'm screwed. I haven't been sleeping well the last 40 years. I've tried everything. I wake up every two hours. The longest I can sleep in one go is sometimes 4 hours.
Have you gone in for a sleep study?
@@DoctorEyeHealth No I haven't. It's my bladder that wakes me up. Ever since I gave birth to my first child I couldn't hold it for long. I'm eating low carb, exercise and have done everything suggested for a better sleep. I fall asleep easily, it's just the 2 hourly pee breaks. I don't have dry eyes but I was diagnosed with early stages of Glaucoma earlier this year. Otherwise my eyes are fine according to the specialist.

Guessing being diagnosed w/ Sjögren's doesn’t “count”? Only nighttime eye ointment helps ~ needed repeatedly during the day!!! 👁️ 👁️
Hey Doc! I just want to say, Can you make a video about Visual Snow Simulation? About seeing the Vortex in your vision? Because I find it very strange that whenever you explain too most doctors about the symptoms that you’re experiencing with your eyes, They seem confused & don’t know what you’re talking about. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, It’s when you see a spinning wheel/fan in your vision! I want to know if it affects your vision or not.
Does nearsightedness stop at age of 20? I have heard this a lot
Love the advice...and the new muscles...wish my OD would be so forward. 😁
Informative video
O man I usually only get 4-5 hours of sleep each night! I have been struggling with dry eye for over a year now and now pretty constant styes as well! I wonder if this is part of that!
Joke- I have an eye problem, I can't see coming to work today! 🤣 Thanks doctor!
Good day can you do a videon on top 5 places to buy glassrs in person in the us.
Very interesting
Hi Dr. Allen! I wish I could get a full night's sleep!! I generally get 3 to 4 hours max of deep sleep each night, the moment I close my eyes 👀!! I have sooo much to do every day that my mind Won't Shut Off until I exhaust it playing Free Cell Solitaire!!it's getting harder to do that on my big phone because of my Macular Degeneration!! Any suggestions?!!
They say no, but how is it that contacts don't block the meshwork that allows your eyes to drain nicely?
We could do with you in Cornwall UK!! 🙏🌊❤✨
What's your advice for those workers who work at night and go to sleep in morning daily? But sleep 7..8 hours daily in day time..Isn't it distrupted sleep pattern? But we don't have any option either
Nice.😮
Hey doc, what about me, I have severe dry eyes only at night? What does that mean? Do my eyes get rest and do they regenerate at night?
Do you mean you only get dryness in the late evenings? Or only when you wake up from sleeping at night?
How many hours of sleep do you recommend for a consistent sleep schedule?
I do experience dry eyes sleep
Hello Doctor, I read somewhere that if you sleep on your back with your pillow at an angle helps your eyes. Is that true?
I wanted to ask my eye doctor suggested me PRK surgery for my high miopia can I go for it if I have pituitary tumour? In future will it cause any side effects?
I have dry and itchy eyes..i work night shift for almost 20 years and my disrupted sleep pattern is due to my kidney issues..pls advice me.i work in a bar with unhealthy environment like smokes in air and strong lights from equipments..
Doctor, Allen, do you use phone interpreters in your clinic?
I did at my previous clinic in Minnesota. Have not spoken to my new clinic here about that yet. What language are you asking about?
Well... I have problem sleeping due to snow vision..RP and Ringing in mu head. Sometime i cant sleep at All.
I wake up with consistent dry and sore eyes every morning, and it seems to get worse the longer I sleep, this has went on for 4+ years, ointments and gels don't help, doctors think it might be a skin issue? Thoughts?

Does that mean it’s not eye-healthy to sleep with eyes covered with sleeping eye masks or similar things, as doing so might prevent proper air circulation around the eyeballs? I sleep with a custom made microfibre eye cover due to dry eyes syndrome which seems to have worked now but my eyesight is getting worse, so please advise me about whether this might be the cause of my eyesight failing while the dryness has been cured? Thank you doctor for your informative post.
Hi Doctor, can regression after eye lasik surgery cause increase in intraocular pressure?
Usually not no. They are not directly related. But there could be other things going on within the eye that leads to increased pressure.
@@DoctorEyeHealth I have had lasik and recently experiencing regression.. my eye pressure with adding any points is 14mmhg and 16mmhg. Central corneal thickness is 497 and 492. Is my pressure fine? Or is it something to worry about? Normally how many points are added in IOP after lasik?

Can a weak thin retina develop a tear or detachment during REM sleep when the eye is involuntarily shaking back and forth rapidly ? Esp. in highly myopic individuals with retinal degenerations
Really interesting question!!! I have never seen or heard of that happening. I don’t imagine that the shaking of the eyes is strong enough to cause that level of sheering force.
@@DoctorEyeHealth I am asking this bc whenever i wake up in middle of the night suddenly, i see bright arc shaped flashes in the dark, So i always thought REM movement causes the vitreous to slosh around forcefully tugging the retina along
@@ajaynarayanaswamy3073you probably have PVD posterior vitreous detachment. If you eye doctor sees no retina tears … see an eye doctor immediately!!! If PVD do not hit your head …
I have a baby and often don’t get enough sleep due to him waking up in the night. I was wondering if breastfeeding also contributes to dryness since IgA is in both tears and breast milk?
I do not have issues with sleep but I do have glaucoma.
Hmm, I'll have to track my sleep to dry eye ratio.
It has been pretty interesting to ask my patients about their sleep, some patients tell me they sleep only 4/5 hours a night
How can you have less than 6 hours of sleep and more than 8 hours at the same time? Maybe I misunderstood what you said about the Korean study.
Oh sorry about that being confusing. That found that people who get either 6 hours or less or more than 8/9 hours of sleep the risk for glaucoma goes up.
But if I read the screen capture of that report correctly, this only affects overweight people, and there’s no statistically significant difference for non-overweight people, correct?
Hey Doc. I was seeing your Omega 3 video and how it is really beneficial for dry eyes. Could you please let me know if it's okay for a 60 year old to take 2000mgs or more of fish oil daily? Thank you.
