This is WONDERFUL news. I've been using intermittent fasting since March of 2020, resulting in the loss of over 80 pounds (so far), so these added benefits are MOST encouraging. For the record, I've always made sure to stay hydrated (plain water, black tea or coffee only) both during my fasting periods as well as in my 'eating window'. I typically break my fast with a protein small meal (or snack) along with one healthy meal a day when actively losing weight, when I'm easing off a bit to take a break, I add in a second healthy meal. The most effective ratio for me has been 19 (occasionally more) hours of fasting, with the remaining 5 hours considered my window for my meal/meals. I was diagnosed with early stage macular degeneration about 2003 (8 spots of drusen in one eye, 6 in the other, so it was VERY early stage). Additionally, I was told at my last eye exam that I have the very beginnings of a cataract in my left eye, not unusual for my age group (68 as of last March) but definitely a condition I want to monitor (and slow down that process if at all possible). After seeing your video regarding astazanthin (not sure of spelling), I added that to my daily eye vitamin, as well as melatonin each evening for it's benefit to eye health (the sweet sleep factor is secondary for me personally, but still appreciated). My inflammation levels have dropped considerably, easing the effects of the plantar fasciitis as well as some mouth/gum issues I've dealt with in the past. Thank you for sharing your research, I love learning about how I can help improve and safeguard my health as much as possible.

If intermittent fasting is beneficial for eyesight, then theoretically, periodic 4-5 day water fasting should be even more advantageous, right? There are numerous reports suggesting that water fasting has enabled many individuals, including Will Smith, to completely discontinue their blood pressure medications.

Yes it absolutely helped my eyesight recover using a 3 day fast. I had to read many labels as a part of my job when I was 28 the other year.
I noticed that I had to get closer and focus a little more to read them.
But it just so happens that I started to fast around then.
So I did my first 72 hour fast, and my vision was back to a normal 20/20 afterwards!
I would say I probably had sugar damage to parts of my eye. Also my feet swelling and gout symptoms went away with about 80 lbs of fat/water retention too.

Fasting induces ketones by liver and muscle that signals autophagy, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects as well as stimulating mitochondria and energy production. Similarly several botanical have parallel effects including β-caryophyllene (BCP), an aromatic essential oil found in cloves, black pepper and cinnamon. BCP improves contrast sensitivity and vision immediately by promoting the same mechanisms as ketones.

I started IF and Keto this past February and lost 25lbs. Also, about 2 months in my eyes went blurry. (I wear glasses.) I read on a random comment that IF and Keto made someone's eyesight better. hi i am from greece so sorry for my bad english. i too saw a huge difference to my eyesight by fasting and lately i used 100% castor oil (cold pressed organic, without additives).I get some to my finger and get all my skin up down the eye and the thing when you close your eyes don't know how it is called. I did it for some other benefits but wow in a matter of days i saw my diplopya
getting hugely improved.it is not fixed but some momentsbetween the day i am getting almost 100% good eyesight. If i were glasses i see normal but without i see double and not blury.this occured when i started treating my myopia (4.00).i am aboyt 2.50 now but have the double vision.I think myopia is nerve damage like peripheral neuropathy and that's why it benefits from fasting.that is my belief cause i tried many many things for curing my myopia and only fasting worked.now castor oil have properties that benefits nerves and blood vessels so i think it is a must try thing for eye problems.I am just nobody sharing his experience. Not a doctor or anything

Now you’re definitely on to something, Dr. Allen. I believe the mechanism of action for mitigating diabetic retinopathy has to do with, ultimately, insulin resistance. A low carbohydrate/sugar diet such as a ketogenic or carnivore diet are going to ultimately promote insulin sensitivity and make it much easier to successfully do intermittent fasting. There’s a much bigger picture with insulin resistance that we have been missing. Promoting insulin sensitivity is now a regular part of my discussion with patients.

Getting off junk food and ultra processed food is more important than any specific diet or fasting regime, in my opinion. Having said that, I generally have a ginger-turmeric shot and bulletproof coffee in the morning with electrolytes to hydrate. Technically this breaks my fast but it’s a modest amount of calories, mostly fat. I then eat two meals within the next 8 hours, low carb but not keto. I have a minor, occasional issue with dry eye but otherwise my eyes are healthy and my eyesight is stable. I take fish oil and other supplements like lutein and zeaxanthin for my eyes. I believe that the development of myopia in children is directly related to eating a high glycemic diet. I grew up in a household where there was very little food. We weren’t poor, but my mother was very depressed due to PTSD from seeing lots of death during WWII. My grandparents got the money together to send my brother and I to boarding school. At boarding school we were immediately exposed to large meals with lots of potatoes, rice, pasta and desserts. Within a few months, I was wearing glasses and my myopia was 20/200. Recently, in my mid 60s I went on the Atkins diet combined with intermittent fasting to lose a few pounds. My vision is now almost normal (around 20/30). Also, my eye doctors over the years were always monitoring the pressure in my eye which they said was high and if it went higher, I would have to start taking eye drops for glaucoma. The pressure in my eye is now normal! The only thing that has changed is my diet - IF and low carb.

After learning about what carnivore could do for eyesight, I tried it for 3-4 months. I lost ton of weight, no saggy skin, better mood, less mental fog, all the good stuff, but no change in eyesight. My myopia (-7.00) and astigmatism (-2.75) are still progressing at almost 40 years old. I put on some weight after having my last baby, but for some reason, it's harder for me to get back to keto(vore). I'm currently trying something new, Akkermansia supplement while eating healthy carbs, and it seems to be working so far. I have lost almost all cravings for junk food and get full faster. Weight is something I could drop with some consistency and willpower, but not my glass prescription.

@@solutions4tenants141 Going keto is actually easy for me. Craving carbs is not my problem. What makes it hard is the fact that eating different than the rest of my family makes me feel/look left out. And coming from an Asian culture, sharing the food and eating together is deeply meaningful to us. A few years back, kids were smaller and didn't care what I ate. But now, they can see. My goal is not being a size small, it's being metabolically healthy, at least as close as I can. My point in my original comment was that neither keto or carnivore helped me with my vision.

When I was on a milk kefir diet to improve my gut health, I blended frozen blueberries and dragon fruit in it, drank every day, and my eyes were doing better, less dry eye and the iris brightened, vision didn’t get worse. Last couple years I haven’t done that and my vision has gotten worse. I seem to have a problem getting enough vitamin A and I know my body doesn’t absorb B12 very well. Organic carrots, squash, tomatoes, blueberries, blackberries, vitamin A supplements, lutein/xeanthin… Some of us need more than just meat.

There are eye exercises in the form of Vision Therapy that have great evidence to help with certain binocular conditions. They are often prescribed after head/ neck/ and brain injury as well. The exercises help improve the coordination between the eye muscles and the brain and can help with many other visual symptoms.
The downside is that some people claim they can “reverse the need for glasses “ with these exercises which is incorrect. Some people do have accommodation spasms or pseudomyopia from constant near accommodation. In those cases, people really just need to learn to relax their eye muscles and that can help them with their symptoms, but doing eye muscles exercises won’t change the size or refractive state of the eyeball.

I ended up taking my glasses the next year to an eye doctor because I didn't know my prescription. And he said one of my eyes improved and the other remained the same. I did not associate it with the fast. But I was intrigued because I rarely used my glasses except for at work and I kept being told by Drs all my life since elementary to wear glasses all the time or eyesight would get worse.
