Thank you so much for your videos on dry eye syndrome. In December I woke up one morning with my eyelid stuck to my eyeball which created an abrasion on my cornea. I’m still dealing with vision problems four months later because of scar tissue on my cornea. I’m looking very forward to your recommendation on the best omega-3‘s. Thanks again for what you do!
Check with your internist and if you have cardiologist check with them also. I was told to stop the omegas immediately. I have Sjogrens which lends itself to dry eye and I was told to not make Omegas by my cardiologist. Studies have come out indicating the negative effects on your cardio system. I was disappointed ,but they were very adamant to stop taking Omegas.

Thank you for the video. I'm using Omega 3 for about 3 months now. I had dry eye issues. Using Omega 3 the issues are gone. I don't use any medications with it, so, for me it's working. Hallo from Brazil 🇧🇷
A quick story of success! My little rescue dog (maybe about 4 yrs old or so) had suffered abuse and was near death from starvation when we got him 2 yrs ago. He gained weight and was very healthy until one month ago when suddenly he got those cataract blue toned eyes and started declining! It came out of nowhere. He was stumbling and very emotionally down due to abruptly not being his formerly active self. I was so upset, so shocked by this change. I suspect it was poor nutrition over the yrs before we got him and poor breeding. I read a book by Dr Pitcairn a holistic vet who said to put cod liver oil in his eyes along with salt water solution and add cod liver oil in his food. Well you wouldnt believe me if I told you how fantastic these methods have worked to bring our little dog into a state of health again! I am still blown away by the healing power of cod liver oil. Another interesting piece is that he always had issues with appetite - it came and went. Now that we put a teaspoon of cod liver oil in his food, he is so excited about eating. I know that with genetic eye issues these remedies dont alway work and maybe not forever, I am not sure. But what a wonderful turn of events using cod liver oil. I am currently adding it to my own routine to improve my health. Cant say enough about cod liver oil.
I wish you were my eye doctor. I'm getting older and 12 years ago started wearing reading glasses. I'm now seeing tiny floaters and have trouble at night going from a dark room into a brightly lit room. Takes twice as long for my eyes to adjust. And I have a low degree of dry eye.
I started taking omega-3, lutein and zeaxanthin supplement about 2 weeks ago, I can feel a difference. Now I only need eye drops 2 - 3 times during the day as opposed to ...every hour.
thank you so much for your videos!! I love my omega-3 supplement and I noticed that on days when I take it my eyes a less dry. Actually, what you mentioned about eating fish is important to note , because for a time I was eating trout twice a week and did not see that it was really helping my dry eyes. We later started buying salmon and wow!! it improved. So like you said its important to eat the right kind of fish too. Thank you again for all your useful videos. Excellent videos!!
You're so welcome! Thanks for sharing your experience with this. It was interesting reading about what types of fish have more omega 3s in them. Some sources list tuna as having a lot but when I read into it...it really doesn't.
Thanks so much for another great vid! This dry eye is looking forward to Part 2 😘 Love to see your before/after blood test results! It’s strange, how Omega 3 recommendations are so much lower here in Europe… But I trust your up to date knowledge much more.
I'm looking forward to your video about the blood test! I mean, first we have to know what our omega 3 / omega 6-level is and decide based on these values if we need supplements or if we don't need them. That would be my way to go. Of course the question would also be what good values are...
Yes! I was pretty astounded by my levels (how low they were when i first started) and then how my symptoms changed over time. Looking forward to finishing that video.
I take algae oil supplements. The studies show that our bodies process it identically to the omegas found in fish oil (which came from algae to begin with). My preferred brand is Testa, based on the amounts of DHA and EPA, but there are other good brands out there. And some crappy brands. Just like with fish oil.
Many specialists, lots of medical debt, and all I'm told about losing 60% of my vision in one eye is "Well, go home and keep an eye on it". That felt extremely cruel. Eight months later, my eyes hurt constantly, & all I know is I have optic neuritis, but having a name does not help. Thank you for giving me something to try. I'm scared and felt hopeless. I've had high cholesterol for the first time in my life (odd for a vegan!), so I tried tuna, saw no change. Thank you for plant based options.
Hi, liquid omega fish oils are great for dry eye and coughs , when I have a nagging cough I bite into omega fish capsule swallow the liquid discard the capsule and it quiets my cough, keeps it at bay :)
This video was very useful Doctor, I suffered Steven Johnson Syndrome in 2003 and as a result I developed dry eyes. Apart from dry eyes, i have two more issues, one is my eyelashes growing inwards and scratching my cornea and the other is thickening of the skin inside my eyes, I think it is called Conjunctiva. Whenever I visit a doc, they use to pluck the hair that grows inward and give drops, recently my vision has decreased, doctor is not telling anything properly, can you guide me in this please.
Doc did you know that having a fatty liver can also cause dry eyes dry mouth dry nose. I read several area that the signs of a fatty liver also cause dry skin arm back face.
Hey doc, just a reminder if you forgot You were going to make a video on vision restoration for keratoconus patient using bioengineered cornea made from pig collagen Will this treatment be commercially available in a decade (I am currently 20, and I will be more than happy even if I get this at 30) Your content is great, and I recommend your channel to everyone on Reddit forums.
My eyes were mostly fine till I visited my optometrist last month, now they're continually dry, itchy, stingy and hurt a bit when I squeeze my eyes shut (and a twitch). Thinking I may have been infected at her office. BTW, she suspects Pseudoexfoliation of the lens, she wrote it down for me to look up, I did and scared the crap out of me, my wife (a GP) also looked it up and told me nothing to worry about. Appears to be more than one thing, wasn't explained well in the office.
Hi doctor, I had lasik done 5 months ago and still suffer from severely dry eye. I take omega 3s, use eye drops every hour-2 hours, do warm compresses, etc and I’m still dealing with this awful dry eye. It seems to be okay in the morning - mid afternoon and then the dryness really kicks in. Is this something I will have to live with forever? :((
Hey thanks for sharing, Alyson. That is really tough. As I have discussed in a previous livestream/video about dry eye after lasik, lasik can sever the corneal nerves and amplify dryness. It can also change the way the eye heals itself. I have helped many people improve their dryness post lasik, but it is something that may never be "cured". But hopefully with treatments, you and your doctors can get the symptoms under control and manage it at a level where you won't suffer. Are your doctors also putting you on any medications or recommending any procedures?
@@DoctorEyeHealth my doctor has given me xiidra but I have not tried it yet. Everyone I talked to be fore I had my lasik said their dryness eventually went away (even after a year and a half) so I didn’t think the dryness would be that big of a deal. I never would’ve had lasik if I knew how awful this dryness is. I also deal with sinus problems and I’ve seen some people say taking Xiidra caused them sinus problems which makes me hesitant to try it.
@@_alysonh I had Lasik in August, dryness and light sensitivity are still almost unbearable at times. I wish I had not had this procedure. It is so depressing. I almost dread my beach trip this year. Hang in there! Hopefully things will get better for us soon.
Have dry eye which I control with tear drops during day but find eyes dry up at night when sleep , get so dry when I wake up can't open eyes comfortably, need to use tear drops to lubricate eye. Any suggestions on what can be used at night . Will try the Omega's too. Thanks for awesome videos 👍
The following may help: good hydration, vit. D3 to reach level of 100mmol/l, omega3 3-4gms/day. If you have systemic inflammation CRP (c reactive protein) >>1 find its cause and address it. Nevertheless, taking curcumin, good brand, 3x a day will help quenching the destructive fire in your body. I know from my own experience.
I'd suggest a thick eye ointment that provides a barrier over your eyes while you sleep so that they don't stick in the morning. I use drops during the day but they are not enough to help at night so I use an ointment. It's fiddly to put in and makes eye sight blurry for a little bit after application but you'll be sleeping so that's fine. I don't wake up with sticking eye lids anymore. I get mine from Amazon as the one my optician suggested is apparently out of stock everywhere (lacri lube) so I had to find an alternative. I live in England. Good luck.
Wow, I didn't know omega 3 came from algae! I'm curious how much is found in seweed and spirulina... Everyone always talks about Salmon. Fun fact aquarist like to feed sharks in aquariums fatty fish like mackerel and herring b/c the oils help their buoyancy. PS: love the cute animation sounds ❤
off topic…. if you haven’t already, will you do a video on acupuncture and the pros and cons, effectiveness, etc of it for eye conditions, illnesses, symptoms related to eye conditions, illnesses, etc please? i know it probably won’t be a miracle cure, but i’m interested to know how well it works/helps by itself or when combined with other treatments for eye health.
@@DoctorEyeHealth there have been some papers on the use of acupuncture for dry eyes, macular degeneration, etc. might be something interesting and helpful to some.
Fish oil is a blood thinner..Recently told by my doctor that before any major operation you should stop taking it..Could cause complications after surgery..

please Dr, I suffer from yellow eyes . Here tgey said that it is gelbert syndrome and tgey said it is no problem with that. But I feel upset I want clear eyes please
Doc ... Is the Omega 3 Index relevant here? For example, I take a plant-based Omega blend that has been shown to elevate desired Omega 3 levels in the body ... in half the time and half the dosage ... of fish oils.
Hello Doctor, I am from India. I have had dry eye issues for many years. I tried different things and OMEGA 3 Fish oils for 6 to 8 months. My experience is not up to the mark. I felt no or significantly less change. As a vegetarian person, you know how is my eyes condition and having non-veg capsules. Cna you please suggest something? Thank you :)
Hey thanks for asking! Bummer to hear you haven't found success with the omegas. There may be something to say about testing the omega 3 and 6 levels in peoples blood, also the brand/type and concentration/dosage taken. I will have a video coming next week on specific omega 3 brands, including vegetarian options.
Are you well hydrated? What is vit. D3 in your body? What is your level of inflammation CRP)? All of these are factors in controlling inflammation and dryness
PS...Algae oil supplements have extremely low levels of omega 3's per capsule, dose. You will have to take many more pills and spend a lot more to get it up to a good dosage, just saying.
what exactly causes dry eyes in lasik surgery? like why is it affected? doesnt the laser just modify the cornea, doing nothing to the tear ducts/glands?
Great update. Mentioned this on a previous clip, but 4-5 grams/day of triglyceride Omega 3 over 12 weeks worked pretty well for me. As you suggest. not a silver bullet but very good efficacy. Add to this the general downregulation of inflammation overall and it's a win win.
You say, "Don't use fish oil - use omega-3". My bottle says, "Wild Alaskan Fish oil: 4500mg total; 1400mg EPA, 900mg DHA". I've heard 6g/day is needed, sometimes. Never heard that omega-3 can be dangerous if taken over 6g, etc. I went to a dry eye clinic, and by the 2nd visit they said, "You should see a Dermatologist. Looks like you have rosacea on your eyelids". Like, what..?? And the Dermatologist will say, "Have you seen an Ophthalmologist?".
Thank you for asking!!! I will be doing more in depth reviews of some of the most notable brands soon. I just wanted this video to be free from brands.
I moved from Florida to New Mexico 5 yrs ago. I had never experienced dry eye until the last 6 months. I take Omega 3 supplements regularly (and have for yrs). I've also tried a humidifier, assorted eye drops and ointments, as well as hot compresses. I am not seeing many results. How long should I wait before seeing an Opthalmologust ?
Is Hemp oil better than fish oil? Hemp oil contain Omega 3, 6 and 9. Also I would be happy if you make a video about freckles in the eyes, I have green/blue eyes but last years freckles started appearing on the iris of my left eye. An ophthalmologist told me I have an optic athrophy on that eye. Could it be related to the freckles?
Hello , Dr. Allen, I am thankful for your videos but I have a question about Omega-3 diet . I am trying to understand whether canned fish is rich in it . What is your opinion?
I have been told that Omega 7 in addition to Omega 3 is something very helpful. To get away from fish oil Omega 3, has anyone got comments or used MCT Omega 3 for a pure triglyceride?
I am suffering from dry eye syndrome and flashes for nearly 2 years. I have consulted ophthalmologist a number of times and was prescribed with lubricant named Systane Complete. Initially I was prescribed Systane ultra , for 1 year and later on he changed it to systane complete. In this modern world where we cannot avoid digital device my life has turned upside down due to this problem as it is difficult for me use laptop or even ipad. I can't even do my online classes without eye discomfort and headache even after using lubricant. Even while typing this comment my eye hurts. Would you please reply what should I do or how do I solve my problem .
You need to change your lifestyle including diets avoid fried foods and always stay hydrated and also wear protective sun glass with blue light filter when going out including when dealing with screen too to avoid rays entering your eyes, and always lower your brightness. I don't need to list more but that's how I use to manage mine Goodluck

Dear Dr. Allen, I hope this comment finds you well. I've been struggling with severe dry eyes from about 10 years. My dry eyes began like in the spring of 2020. Everytime my dry eyes act up. Before I touch my eyes to ease the tears or pain. I need to wash my hands with sanitizer wipe or gel because to protect me from getting Covid.
Usually, supplements don't include shellfish, but always read the label as they could contain trace amounts or be made in a similar processing plant. You could also consider algae based forms.
Hiii... Thank you so much for your recommendation and for your content. Hopefully everyone would like it❤ Plz recommend treatment for dry and sunken eyes.
Hiya! Thanks for the vid. Quick question about the best way to take Omega 3s supplements. What time of the day is better? Is it best practice to do it on an empty stocmach or with food? Cheers.
Thanks very much for this Doctor. I'm 80 yo now and tried fish oil capsules over a year ago but had many hematomas so my PCP suggested that I stop the fish oil capsules. I am on two blood thinners plus more things for cardiac issues [Plavix, Xarelto and Toprol] and would like to restart Omega-3s. Is there a safe way to do this for my eye issues? I have elevated ocular pressures, glaucoma and the start of macular degeneration so all of that complicates things. Thanks for any help you might offer. BTW, the Opti-Mel Manuka eye drops have eliminated the floaters that I suffered with for many years. Gracias!
Oh wow! Great to hear you have found some relief with the Optimel Manuka honey drops, I have not read much about them helping floaters, but either way I am happy to hear it. Omega 3 supplements have been shown in some studies to contribute to bleeding, however, newer research supports that the increased bleeding risk has to do with the TYPE of omega 3 supplements (because of the processing). A tryglyceride form of omega 3 is not supposed to contribute to bleeding risk. But, due to your other systemic issues and risk, best to ask your PCP if they have heard of the Tryglyceride forms of omega 3 vs ethyl ester forms in regards to bleeding risk and if they can confirm it and what they think will be best/safest for you. But most surgeons do not worry about omega 3s before surgery because the bleeding risk of omega 3s has largely been disproven.
If youre older person, like myself the dry mouth and dry eyes MAY BE related to autoimmune processes in the body ( inflammation) and then the vit. D3 and omega3 are very helpful.
I have used Areds 2 multivitamin and lubricating eye drops it helps me a little bit but i do have dry eyes maybe i should try omega 3 i didn't have tried omega 3 fish oil
Very helpful. Thanks Doc. I get lax on my fish oil. Ik it helps I can tell when I take it. I take 2 kinds, cod liver oil, Engelvaer is the brand and fish oil, can’t remember name but it’s pretty common blue/white label. I probably take at least 3000. No burps for me. But I now know I need to stick with it for at least 3 months. Was diagnosed with MGD pretty bad in my left eye

It’s strange, how Omega 3 recommendations are so much lower here in Europe…
But I trust your up to date knowledge much more.
Magnesium and Potassium citrate powder supplements was what fixed it for me.
What brands do you recommend?
I'm looking forward to your video about the blood test! I mean, first we have to know what our omega 3 / omega 6-level is and decide based on these values if we need supplements or if we don't need them. That would be my way to go. Of course the question would also be what good values are...
Yes! I was pretty astounded by my levels (how low they were when i first started) and then how my symptoms changed over time. Looking forward to finishing that video.
Thanks doc for this video although I don't personally suffer from dry eyes, I do enjoy learning about these things 😸
Salmon or cod livers are better.
Cholesterol is not caused by eating fat - it is caused by inflammation, which can be caused by a high sugar diet, and many other things.

BTW, she suspects Pseudoexfoliation of the lens, she wrote it down for me to look up, I did and scared the crap out of me, my wife (a GP) also looked it up and told me nothing to worry about. Hi doctor,
I had lasik done 5 months ago and still suffer from severely dry eye.
I also have these moments of sharp pain in the corners of my eyes. Is that from dryness or should I be more concerned?
@@_alysonh I had Lasik in August, dryness and light sensitivity are still almost unbearable at times. I wish I had not had this procedure. It is so depressing. I almost dread my beach trip this year. Hang in there! Hopefully things will get better for us soon.

Have dry eye which I control with tear drops during day but find eyes dry up at night when sleep , get so dry when I wake up can't open eyes comfortably, need to use tear drops to lubricate eye. Any suggestions on what can be used at night . Will try the Omega's too. Thanks for awesome videos 👍
Use tear gels at night
Good luck.
If your eyes are really dry the ointments don’t last the night, this happens to me too. Nothings works 😭
Same. Did anything work for you@@Dotty1110?

Great update. Mentioned this on a previous clip, but 4-5 grams/day of triglyceride Omega 3 over 12 weeks worked pretty well for me. As you suggest. not a silver bullet but very good efficacy. Add to this the general downregulation of inflammation overall and it's a win win.
