- The Horse Chestnut Tree (Conker/Buckeye tree) has wonderful spiky green casings that drop each autumn. It is not hard to imagine fairies taking up residence in them. Find out how to make you own spiky green fairy house, with opening door and petal roof, in this step by step tutorial. Or make the door static, and you can create a fairy house box instead. So, sit back, relax, watch the process unfold, and decide which you want to make.

Thank you so much for watching.
That is adorable
Thanks so much Annie :)
Holy cow this is absolutely stunning my daughter just did a fairy garden with her grandma and this would look so cute in that garden I wish I was talented enough to make this but sadly I have no artistic talent whatsoever but u are very talented I really enjoy watching and listening to u create very soothing as well
Thanks so much Lizz, but you could give it a go and see what happens, I am sure the result wouold look magical and fit right in
with your daughter's garden :)
I hope u realise how absolutely talented u r, u do amazing things with clay that some of us can’t even imagine, the ideas that rattle around in ur brain are truely awesome and I’m so grateful that u share it with all of us, brilliant
awwww what a truly lovely comment, thank you so much Sarah :)
So cute
Thanks so much :)
Fiona, these are so wonderful!!! They just exude cuteness. Any fairy would love to live in these!! You have given me so many ideas!! Thanks!!
I am so happy you liked it, thanks so much Cheryl :)

It sounds like you are having fun and I am planning to hopefully do another one some time soon. I would love to see a picture of yours :) Thanks so much :)
What a pleasure to watch. Loved you video :)
Thanks so much Stella :)
Absolutely darling
Thank you so much Susan :)
That is adorable! Nick Zammeti is another British artist/woodcrafter that I watch here. He has a rather humorous video on an attempt to adhere a bunch of conkers together, put them on a lathe, and make a small box. He's pretty comical, and very talented...usually. He is a bit mature in his humor, so be warned! LOL
Hi Ellen, I also love watching Nick Zammeti, but I haven't seen that one yet, so may hop on over and have a look ;) Thank you :)
What a sweet and inspiring treasure you are! Your videos are so organized and well made. It's obvious you put enormous amounts of time behind the scenes. I like that you explain the simple things but skip ahead to the details that need to be shown in real time. You are good at clay, teaching, AND video editing. Thanks for sharing so many of your talents with us.
Thank you so much Bonnie, what a lovely comment, thank you :)
These are so cute. Thanks for sharing them
Thank you very much :)
Can I just say the music you use in these videos is some of the most calming instrumentals I have ever heard. I don't know how you found it, but coupled with your soothing voice and the beautiful creations you make it's like a lullaby. It reminds me of when I was a little kid watching Tinkerbell; so fairy-tale like and magical. All of your videos remind me of that feeling, it's almost nostalgic. Thank you so much for making these videos. They are so lovely to watch and listen to.
Thanks so much Mary :) Yes I obviously love the music too, I listened to quite a few on the free UA-cam site, and love both the ones I regularly use. I hope the musicians get recognition for them too, I add their details at the end of each video if you want to check them put and see what else they have composed :)
Agree 100%!!!
@@leewitte4580 Thanks so much Lee, I love their music :)
I concur, the music combined with tutorial = my happy place
I feel exactly the same way, about the music, her voice and the calmness overall, I watch as I drift off to 😴
FANTASTIC!!!!!!!
Thank you so much :)
Интересная идея и такой хороший мастер класс.
Вы просто мастер с большой буквы. Браво.
Большое спасибо :)
awesome! you are a true Grandmaster!
Thank you so much :)
We had a horse chestnut at our last home. I would have never thought of how to do such a cute box or fairie house. This was a wonderful way to spend an hour and a half on a afternoon here in Oregon with the smoke every where. Fiona you do wonderful designs I just love to watch. Thank you.
Thanks so much Melinda :) I hope you are managing to stay safe with all the smoke everywhere? Take care :)
Amazing nbbeautiful and the work u put in is worth every minute,I really enjoyed that thank u so much they're magical 👍💕
Thanks so much Brenda :)
Love these Fiona.
Thanks so much Deb :)
What an absolutely delightful project! I got back into polyclay a few years ago based on fairy projects. I've done a lot of stuff but fairy projects. lol Your video is perfect timing! A nice long deliciously inspiring video to boot! What a delightful treat on this smokey hot day. Thank you so much!!!
Thanks so much Andrea :)
I have watched this many times and I am still in awe of your talents and abilities to do such a superb job of imitating nature so well. Kudos on a job well done!
Thank you so much :)
Those trees are an “Endangered Species,” if you will, in the U.S. When my best friend and I were both very young, we used to jump on their shells to open them, and I remember our parents were quite upset with us. Probably for leaving skids on our shoes... At any rate, a fairy would do quite well to find herself a home in one, Great memories--Thank you, Bethany McKittrick
What a lovely memory Bethany, thanks so much for sharing it. Luckily in the UK these are not yet endangered, but after the video I did return the conkers to under the trees I found them, for the wildlife to share ;) Thank you :)
Gracias
Muchas gracias wendy :)
All your creations are great. Your videos are very accurate and I hope to learn how to do a few things. A heartfelt thanks.
Thank you so much, I am so glad you like them :)
I don’t play with polymer clay but I love watching you create things, you are incredible. Thank you for sharing. I might not make things but I am good with ideas from time to time. I did think if you were going to use this with lights you could use translucent clay in the peacock feather cane as the filler spots and then have the lights come through the top too as they do the sides I don’t know how well it will work but I imagine it would look quite pretty. I can’t wait to see your next project x
Oh yes Jay, that would look amazing, great innovation. Thanks so much for your lovely comments :)
A skylight or maybe two?
At first I thought that you were going to use an actual conker for the main part of the house - when I saw you putting it together I was amazed at your skill being able to replicate the conker it really looks like the real thing. I particularly love the longer videos as I learn so much from them and I could watch you create all day to be honest. I'm in love with those little houses. When I buy my next lot of clay I'm certainly going to give this a try. Thank you for the inspiration.💜
Thank you so much Kim, I hope you have lots of fun when you do one of your own :)
Fiona Abel-Smith PolyOriginals Yes I'm sure I will thanks.💜
Marvelous! Can’t wait to make my own. Thank you, Fiona, for this amazing project.
You are very welcome, thank you Nancy :)
Wow! Thank you Fiona!
Thanks so much Luisa :)
Oh Fiona!! Stunning!! I LOVE these adorable little houses!!💜❤️♥️ So cute! The roofs are beautiful!!❤️
Have a wonderful sunday!
Thank you so much Cindylee :)
You are amazing! I have been interested in doing clay work and have watched a lot of UA-cam videos.... You are, by far, my favorite! With your clear instructions, I feel like I could even do this! Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us. You are a true artist. God Bless.
Wow, thank you so much , and yes you can definitely do this :) Thank you Momzetta x 3 :)
Brilliant and oh so cute!! Thank you for sharing, I always enjoy your projects ❤️🇨🇦
Thanks so much Shawn :)
Thankyou so much for your awesome tutorials. I managed on my second attempt to make the roof for a fairy house. I couldn't seem to keep the cane uniform throughout 😕 need more practice but love your work .
Thanks so much Courtney, I am so glad you made one, but I wouldn't worry about the cane being too uniform, in something like this, every petal slice being slightly different is a plus, and the fairies would love it like that too I bet ;) :)
Super sweet! You are so creative ! Thank you!
Thanks so much Marnie :)
Thank you
Thanks so much Eileen :)
really impressive. Thank you for the inspiration.. Love your work
Thanks so much Ann :)
Brillant, amazing to watch and very creative.
Thank you so much :)
Beautiful!!
Thank you so much :)
I can’t wait to start. Thank you Fiona!
Thanks so much Colleen :)
Your videos are ALWAYS so wonderful! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!!!❤
thank you so much Melissa :)
As always, amazing!! I love all your work 💜💜
thank you so much Alison, I love yours too :)
Fiona Abel-Smith PolyOriginals thank you 💜💜
Your designs are so inspiring Fiona! I need to find some conkers now for reference, before the boys in the village have them all! 😊 Thank you!
Thanks so much Liz :) We had a load come down after the high winds over the last few weeks, which is where I got the idea from. I still found some 2 days ago when I had a good look at the bottom of hedges where they had rolled unseen, so you will hopefully find enough :)
Absolutely stunning thank you 😊
Thanks so much Ann :)
I make fairy houses in air dried clay, this polymer clay is new for me, it’s seems a lot more work than air dried, but I will have a go. Thank you for tutorial x. At the beginning when you showed finished house I thought you had used a real conker that’s how good it looked, I thought you had added clay to it lol
Thank you so much, I am sure you will love all the possibilities of polymer clay, it is different to air dry clay, but you can do so much with it :) Just have fun and experiment :)
I love it, you always make stunning designs. Thank you for sharing your talent xx
Thank you so much Dee :)
I have so so much polymer clay & so many fun tools & materials to use with it. But I have a hard time getting inspired. The last project I made was early spring (April) if that gives you any idea (I blame my ADD 🤷🏻♀️🤣) But this little creation of yours has inspired me! I dont have a pasta machine, but I really can't wait to try making one of these myself! Thanks so much Fiona!!! ❤
I am so glad you like it, and hope you have great fun with your clay :)
Hi from Canada!! just love your videos and feel a little more confident after watching you I am now ready to start a fairy house. Do you use a toaster oven to bake your clay?? I haven't bought one yet so I would love to know what you think about which one. Thanks again
I am so glad you are enjoying the videos, thanks so much 🙂 When I bake/cure small pieces I use a little convection oven that sits on my worktable, but for bigger pieces like this fairy house I used my normal kitchen oven, again covering with foil each time I bake. Have you seen the Blue Bottle Tree website? Ginger has loads of free articles, including advice on ovens, she is the clay guru for all things technical that we all listen too 😉 thebluebottletree.com/ I hope that helps, and have fun creating your fairy house 🙂
And of course, thinking back, as these are relatively small, I would have used my convection oven 🙂
Thank you so much I am now a member of the blue bottle tree @@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing. 🌹Rosie of Oz🇦🇺 & 🐶Omega the Cavalier🐶
Thanks so much Rosie and Omega ;)
great ideas you do. i have one question - after baking the polymer clay stay start to be hard or still flexible?
In a project like this it is hard when baked. In other projects, if you bake thin sheets there can be some flexibility after curing. I hope that helps. 🙂
absolutely stunning!!! Autumn/Halloween is my favourite time of year! thank you for all that you do your amazing xxx
Thank you so much :)
i realize it is kind of off topic but do anyone know a good site to watch new tv shows online?
Such a fun idea! :D I LOVE this one! 💜
Thanks so much :)
So cute where I live we don't have those pod things so I am going to try something from the dollar store
Sounds like a great idea, just use whatever you can find. thanks Lori :)
I have made several fairy houses since your last fairy house with all sorts of yards, bushes, mushrooms, used a wine glass for one made it into a tree fairy house I'm having a blast with ideas from you
@@loriede6442 Oh wow, they sound brilliant :)
@@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals thanks for your guidance and inspiration
Do you ever use a "varnish" or top coat on your pieces? Gloss or matte
That is not a quick answer, because, like most polymer artists I use a whole host of finishes :) Where possible I prefer to sand and polish to a deep shine, but if I do need to polish them I use the FIMO water soluble gloss varnish, as it gives a soft sheen with one coat then a deeper shine with progressive coats :) The Blue Bottle Tree is the best source of information for varnishes and finishes, as Ginger goes thorugh so many different finishes and tests them all. She also has a fabulous book on the subject. I hope that helps a little :) thebluebottletree.com/polymer-clay-sealers-glazes-and-varnishes/
Wow, Fiona, as with your Jelly jar fairy house (I've made 2) I get so excited & inspired that I want to start working on a chestnut fairy house as soon as I finish watching your videos! Thank you so very much for posting these incredible creations and inspiring everyone! My first kaleidoscope came out so good I covered everything but the kitchen sink with it!!! LOL. Do you have a community page where people can post their works inspired by you?
Oh I am so happy that it came out so well for you, that's brilliant :) Most people seem to post their photos on Facebook and tag me, so I can see and comment on them that way :) Thanks so much Virginia :)
@@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals Dear Fiona; am finishing my second fairy conker shell - they are the cutest things I have ever seen, but also the most difficult! THAT DOOR HINGE!!! ugh. But thanks again for instilling a new crafting love in me. My husband has warned me my art room time is now limited...😜
@@googlegirl67 I did think twice about doing that door hinge, but I really wanted an opening door ;) Sorry about the time limit, maybe you can sneak back in when he's not looking ;) thanks again Virginia :)
@@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals I did figure a solution to the tiny door by winding very thin wire in a spiral around a thicker wire for the middle door hinge (attached to the door) & then putting a tiny clay cane leaf on top of that. It required a bit of carving to make sure the door opened, but it's good and strong. Necessity is the mother of invention!
@@googlegirl67 Oh absolutely, that's one of my favourite sayings, and sounds like your invention is awesome :)
As always, simply beautiful! Fiona, what surface is that that you are working on? It looks like a dry erase board. Thank you so much for your inspiration!
I work on a large glazed white tile. Under that is the top of my table, which also happens to be white, so it is a simple laminated work top :)
Thanks so much Lee :)
Why do you put the foil over the piece while baking?
If an oven spikes - rises - in temperature while the clay is baking it is possible that the clay can burn. The foil does two things, it helps protect the clay by giving it a shield from a sudden rise in temperature, and also, if the clay should burn it can give off fumes, and these will be held within the foil. The smell is horrible, you can't miss it, and if that ever happens, you can take the piece out of the oven and take it outside to open up there, and release any trapped fumes, as opposed to opening an oven door and getting the fumes inside the house. I hope that helps explain why i recommend to do this. It rarely happens, but I always work on the basis of 'better safe than sorry' . 😉🙂
Thanks very much. I do Fimo since the early 70th, and it never happens to me. But, when I imaging it would, Oh my gosh, horrible scene!
Sorry, wrong button. In future, I will protect my works.
I like your canes.
@@dragon7ish885 Thanks so much 🙂
Olive green and antique rose seem to have been discontinued :-(
Oh Nooooooo they are some of my favourites :( Very disappointing, thanks so much for letting me know :(
Hi Fiona, is the name Conker because when they fall off the tree, they conk you in the head?
Your voice!
