The Great Power Next Door
As Chinese power grows and its strategic rivalry with the United States intensifies, Beijing’s strategies and actions toward the Korean peninsula have become ever more important in considering the future of the US alliance network in Asia. The Great Power Next Door examines China’s military interventions in Korea throughout history. It argues that a definitive logic informed by geography exists in Chinese security policymaking vis-à-vis the Korean peninsula using rich historical and contemporary evidence. The project offers policy-relevant insights into China’s attitude toward the US-South Korea alliance, its position toward Korean unification, and the approach toward North Korean nuclear and missile threats.
