I am not a professional, but I do get sick often, and doctors have told me that my body starts breaking down my fat when I stop eating. A few days is not dangerous, but when it happens for too many days I just get worse and worse. Only when I force myself to eat I have a chance at getting healthy again. The "light" feeling is probably what I think of as "survival mode", where your body is keeping you feeling good just to give you a chance to get food

The relief I've experienced while watching this video is unreal - I'm not alone anymore! Three meals a day is an irrelevant figure for anyone with a busy schedule; this is a belief I'll keep until I die. For context only (not for my own ego's sake), I'm sixteen, and I'm taking college classes through my state university system. I barely move around my house, since I'm stuck at my desk or on my floor doing coursework, so I burn next to nothing. I'm not anorexic, but large amounts of food and water make me lethargic and unproductive, so on days where I have to get a lot of work done, I rarely eat. And however controversial this may be, I like it. Feeling light makes me feel productive and unburdened, and in turn, productivity and completed assignments make me feel at ease. Perhaps over time, I've learned to connect the two, and this only serves to further the habit, but it works for me and that's okay. I'm 5' 2.5" and 103 pounds, which isn't unhealthy - it's a normal BMI, in fact. These numbers have remained constant for the better part of my life - blame the French genetics. Most days, I'm perfectly sated by a glass of strawberry juice or tea with lemon and a half cup of pistachios, chocolate chips, cranberries, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts. On the weekends (when I have a considerably lighter workload), I'll eat a proper meal in the city with my parents. Something like a lotus root salad with peanuts, or some vegetable sushi with plum sauce. The bloating is uncomfortable, but I think the vegetables do my body good, so it's worth it in my mind. The only real downside is the social repercussion. My family calls me Birdie, and my (very athletic) friends insist I'm working my way into an early grave, despite the fact that I've been eating like this since junior high.

Fasting is fine if you just want the "light" feeling or the mental clarity or whatever. But its not a long term weight loss method. The only real weight loss method is eating enough healthy food to sustain your body and exercising.

there is a lot of fantastic information about fasting and how to do it safely! fasting encourages autophagy, which is the process your body undergoes of getting rid of old cells and reproducing new ones. it's like cellular cleaning! this happens when you enter a stage of ketosis.

but you should make sure always that you're getting enough salts when fasting, because if you drink too much water to mask your hunger, you can rid yourself of electrolytes. some people will just eat a pinch of salt a day to make sure you have minerals

When I try to fast I get symptoms of low blood sugar. Any pointers on how to fast but avoid getting shaky and weak?

For years I tried to manage my weight through calorie monitoring and through high-impact exercise without seeing the results I wanted. Things turned around a couple years ago when I started practicing intermittent fasting (eating within an 8 hour window) almost every day: I've never been in better shape :)
I am careful to get all my micronutrients everyday, and I try to get as many nutrients as possible from whole foods (only supplementing where necessary). I also only do low impact exercise, as I find it fosters better mind-body connection: Walking, cycling, yoga and bodyweight.
This has been my recipe for success, but everyone is different: Listen to your body, and research credible sources 👍

I started to research what is the best for my body considering my mental abilities! I wanted to have a high level of productivity and concertation during the day. I wasn't eating breakfast in the past, because i had no appetite in the morning especially when waking up early. After doing research i found out that a rich breakfast can boost your energy level for your daily routine depending on your body type. During the day i try to eat not that much and eat more often instead of having a classic lunch. I eat primary vegetables, fruits, dairy product with low fat and to get a little bit of caffeine i drink Matcha and black tea. In the evening i eat normal dinner. Preferably healthy, sometimes unhealthy ;) But what's really important for my stamina is going out running in the woods. This is what works for me personally. I have more energy through out the day and don't feel tired that often.

Actually more and more research has been done in recent years that found that fasting every once in a while can be very healthy! It will clean your gut and apparently also help with your immune system. It's also becoming a more popular way to lose weight. I think it is important to make sure you get your vitamines and electrolytes when fasting to stay healthy. And make sure you eat properly when you finish fasting to make sure you don't lose too much weight and become weak.

Thanks for the video. It was so relaxing. I don't eat anything after 6pm. Maybe I will have breakfast but sometimes I don't and will start eating around 12pm.

I think it's about knowing and listening to our bodies and doing what we know is healthy and right. Also getting information from good sources - there is a LOT of nonsense about nutrition out there. Nutrition is about nourishment, fresh fruits and vegetables are always good.
Not everything that feels good in the moment is actually good for us in the long term and I think that's true of both over-indulgence and over-restriction. There's a certain high/euphoria that happens with fasting - possibly because our metabolism shifts to a different system with a byproduct (BHB) that behaves like the neurotransmitter GHB (sometimes taken synthetically as a party drug) and that reduces anxiety and produces euphoria. But I really think like the other highs in life it's something perhaps we should only experience occasionally. Ongoing ketosis/fasting/low-carb diet does come with a range of potential negative health effects.
Sadly there are many people who have eating disorders and disguise it (even from themselves) as "healthy" choices. I've been there and I think if in any way at all anyone can avoid going down that path they should because it takes a long, long time to return to thinking clearly and rationally about food and the body. If you're fit and well, if you're not having to deal with gastrointestinal issues or allergies then I think be grateful and enjoy your body and just eat good food, enjoy it, live, be happy. 🥰

There is absolutely *no* evidence that fasting has objective physical benefits. _None._ Every time a person who claims to fast for extended periods is asked to reproduce the experience under controlled observation, their health deteriorates according to objective measurement. Your body is not magical. It requires food to function properly.
For a healthy person, eating nothing for a day or two will do no lasting harm. Some people will experience subjective benefits while fasting. If you want those _subjective_ benefits and you are otherwise healthy, fine, fast a few days-but be very careful that it doesn't develop into chronic disordered eating. People with any health condition should not do this without consulting a physician.
If your diet makes you feel bad, consult a dietitian about making changes. (Not a nutritionist. "Nutritionist" isn't a meaningful designation; anyone can claim the title. Dietitians have evidence-based training.)

Hello Haiying, I was going through the same thing as you during the past few days ... I got very bloated and uncomfortable, which leads to less energy and in my case, congestion in my sinus passages, as there is a correlation between digestion and the sinuses/upper respiratory. I began doing IF (intermittent fasting) quite some time back, which means you eat two meals per day within about a 5 hour window, no food before your first meal or after the second, but you can have tea, coffee, and of course plenty of water anytime. If you are someone who loves to snack or have sugar-based treats, most people find it a bit difficult in the beginning but after a few days, there is no longer a craving for snacks or sweets. Intermittent fasting takes discipline at first, but once you get into the routine, it's very natural and comfortable. Admittedly, I feel I could do better with the types of food I eat, as I tend to consume quite a lot of carbs, but many veggies don't agree with me, especially salads, so that limits the menu choices a bit. One of the great things about intermittent fasting every day is that it gives your body the chance to rest and restore for an extended period of time. I seem to do best when I eat the first meal around noon and then again around 5:00 pm, but ... occasionally I get off-schedule plus experience additional stress (which has happened a lot lately)... and that can result in bloating and congestion. When it began a few days ago, I tried several of my alternative things but nothing was helping, and then yesterday I prepared an ionic magnesium drink, very soothing (and great for the nervous system), and though I cannot state for certain that it was the magnesium, the bloating eased and today I felt more comfortable and had more energy. I am continuing the drink each evening and find that it does help me relax and thus far (knock on wood) I've not had the terrible bloating I was having for several days. Have a good night!
