I grew up with my parents using a percolator. Later, we talked my mom into getting a "modern" MrCoffee drip. She never liked the drip maker coffee as well as the percolator coffee. Said it wasn't as "smooth". I recently found a used percolator at a church yard sale and picked it up for 3 dollars. So glad I did. It was almost like new and I love the coffee it makes. My mom was right.Very smooth coffee. I gave my drip maker away.
The problem with Drip coffee makers is that the paper filter removed the coffee oils and takes away that "creamy" texture percolated coffee has.
@@sirrivard Which is an advantage for the french press
I grew up in a Colombian home (my grandfather actually had coffee growing on his plantation in Antioquia). We were a hardcore coffee drinking family. Even the aging miniature Pinscher dog got coffee milk in her bowl to get her going in the morning. My mom and the rest of us, transplanted to New Orleans drank exclusively Cafe Du Monde coffee & chicory brewed in her mid-century modern electric percolator! In her opinion that was real coffee. How times have changed.
When I was growing up, we had an all glass Pyrex percolator where you could watch the entire percolating process. I personally don't care for this brewing method but it filled the entire house with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. You knew it was morning! :)
Well I like your statement at the end first brewed coffee throughout the house you know it was morning even on a cloudy day right
I love my pyrex, it is my go to percolator. I don't drink coffee everyday but when I do I use my glass percolator. Makes great coffee.
I think Gail is wonderful. :)
I absolutely love perked coffee. Funny thing is o never owned one as a kid. I mostly switched to one because I'm trying to avoid plastics. Hot water should never be touching plastic. You're just filling yourself up with harmful chemicals. Since perks are pretty much just stainless steel and glass, they avoid all those issues.
Most don't have fancy things like timers, but thats easy enough to fix with a timer or a smart switch.
Its nice to know im not the only one afraid of the plastic residue in my coffee. My mr. Coffee pot made horrible horibble tasting coffee, i washed it out a fozen times to finally realize it was the plastic i was tasting that maxe it so horribly tasting. Im scared to buy another coffee maker. I went back to instant coffee sad when instant coffee taste is way bettter than mr. Coffee.
@@Angel-gb9gi they still sell stainless steel percolators. You should buy one. Use a basket filter in the metal basket to capture the “oils” that can raise your cholesterol. Plus, the paper basket filter (8-12 cup size) keeps the coffee grounds out of your coffee. Poke a tiny hole with a paring knife to get the paper filter into the basket over the metal tube.
@@apAvocado my husband bought a 4 cup aluminum travel percolator at a pawn shop and I didn't care for it. It took longer than I wanted to wait and it was a pain to clean and the coffe was not near as good as my folgers instant coffee. I have given up on all coffee makers and just use instant. Easy clean up, no appliance on my counter, it takes 2 minutes to drink and I prefer the taste. Glad my husband bought that cheap percolator so I didn't waste money on something I would not of liked.
@@Angel-gb9gi brewing coffee in anything aluminum will definitely taste terrible!
@@apAvocado yeah I am not for sure it was aluminum but it looked like it to me. I used it just to see if a percolator would be for me and I realized I don't like to wait for coffee in the morning and I don't like the clean up or having to store it. I guess instant works for me. My son really liked having a coffee maker but the coffee maker made horrible plastic smelling coffee but he still liked it as I went back to instant but when the coffee pot broke he wanted another one but it was so scared to get another plastic smelling and horrible coffee maker that I decided on the stainless steal percolator but later realized me and my son would be fine with instant until we run into a good coffee maker at someones house that makes great coffee without the plastic smell or bad taste.
Well done. Two times I had to throw out filtered water and coffee because the stem not centered. Short cord was a plus to prevent all the kids getting severe burns by being able to touch the cord. It happened often with longer cords. Great video.
The difference between the old ones and the new ones is that the old ones are still kicking. The new ones, for whatever reason, stop working after about three years.
I think it's the thermostat that shuts it down at a certain Temp going bad . The old ones hardly ever go bad
i enjoy your demonstration and your humor! thanks i will keep watching, i like soothing videos.
Many people say the short cord is a con, but You don't need to keep this plugged in. It stays hot for a pretty long time after un plugged.
Thanks for doing old fashioned electric percolator review. I returned my Capresso as it leaked from bottom motor housing. Replaced with Hamilton Beach Retro look electric perk. Love the aroma of percolator coffee as it brews my chocolate/melitta combo. No aroma from my Keurig nor my Nespresso Maestria.
I have a different model, though the same principle. I noticed that the lid on the basket was very loose, which allowed a lot of grounds getting into my coffee. I alleviated the problem by buying some small rubber O-rings at the hardware store, a bit smaller than the basket shaft. Keeps the basket lid nice and tight, and almost no grounds. Great video, by the way. Thanks...
Lol, Im here to see what a perculator is. The Mrs was talking about them recently and Im doing Christmas shopping. Now I know. Its basically a coffee maker!
Thanks for the video, I liked the off-beat slightly bonkers, but in a good way presentation.
Sometimes you just gotta go a little bonkers. And these days, with the pandemic, things are naturally bonkers everywhere you go. Better living when you can survive the virus apocalypse, with a hot cup of coffee, while watching the neighbors act strangely on their front lawn in the morning. Oh wait, is she walking her coffee pot down the sidewalk? HAHA :D
Between my expresso machine, my french press and my pyrex stove top percolator. The pyrex is my favorite
Love your reviews, funny. I own a Presto Percolator, just got one. Coffee is much hotter. Prefer it to a Keurig but not better than my Breville Infuser. Thanks for taking the time to educate us on how to use products. I went from using the pressurized baskets to the non pressurized basket, thanks to you. Also got the grinder pro and a digital scale. Hey do you remember the sitcom Hazel? She used an electric percolator.
You are a pleasure to watch. Its your humor.
Oh Gail, you're so funny. 😂 Nice review though, it's been a while since the last time I sipped coffee from a percolator, like 50 years ago. Haha....
I am enjoying using my percolator and Moka Pot. I use filters with my percolator. Compared to kcups and drip coffee pots you have comfort knowing there is no mold growing in it or mineral buildup requiring descaling
Thank u for helping me make it bc I have one to I didn't know how to do it but thanks to u I do
Geez she cracked her self up hahaha
Hah hah hah!!! @4:33 THAT is the best part! Made my day!!
Thank you. It was helpful. Great presentation.
You are very funny and I love your chanel . the 1800s LOL my grandparents had something like that and i always wanted one. I am gonna get it. looks vintage and functional at the same time
There are filters for these coffee ground baskets. Use them. Makes the coffee a whole lot better. 😉
I love perked coffee and I only get it when camping.
You made me giggle that was fun
cool lady and and good review. good she told us how long as mine has no light indicator and I have no idea how long to let it boil
Yes, you are right, MUCH HOTTER! I love it.
Very nice. I have a question. I don't see that nowadays that they made any electric percolators with brew strenght flavor switch for mild or strong coffee like those from 70's and 80's
Yes I remember it well. They could make a racket when they were twenty cup machines like West Bend ones.
My sister in law still has one of those she pulls out for big crowds during the holidays! It's a beast!
i love my rocket but there is something special about a percolator....and GAIL
Do the markers for the ground coffee correspond to 2 tablespoons per cup of coffee? What if I weigh my coffee? Will the basket accommodate this amount of coffee? Do the markers also correspond to ground coffee by weight?
love it
+1 for the perking action :D :D
I'm so glad to see you started doing crew reviews of percolator coffee pots I personally love the presto brand one if possible can you review that one?
Just got the Presto, it's fantastic.
They’re awesome ,nothing new under the sun.If you like hot coffee get one .I also use mine for heating water for a French Press. Quick
omfg Gail you are a national treasure walking your Perk.
Gail....Always entertaining!
😊 super fun video ~ very nice, love the perc.

Does anything prevent it from over-extracting the coffee?
Come on Gail! like those of us who grew up on electric perc and stove top coffee don't know
I had some yesterday
Stove percolator is the way to go. I haven’t found a dripper that makes the coffee as hot or taste better.
I wish they would make a Perkolator completely out of Pyrex Glas or an equivalent material
“And you can walk it” 😂😂😂😂
Well, you know what they say, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. I like a hot cup of coffee, cause once I put in the liquid creamer, it will cool it down. If the coffee is only warm coming out, it will be cold after creaming it up. Well, I am not one to walk my percolator, but all things we love must be kept on a short leash. Love your humor, and yes, I remember the good ole days.
For years I used Farberware Electric Percolators. For the last 10 years, had an 8 cup Farberware, a 4 cup Farberware, an 8 cup Hamilton Beach ---- they all only lasted a few months. Huge cracks at the base where the black plastic starts. So frustrated. I love electric percolators --- but people give most of them BAD reviews.
I kept my parent's percolator for years. For all I know I still have it! The problem I always had with the coffee were grounds in the coffee.
Did your parents put egg shells in the bottom of it?
I did, but it didn't really help.
I wasn't really sure what the purpose of that ritual was. Did it change/improve the coffee flavor at all? I save egg shells to grind up for a calcium supplement for both my pets and in my garden. They smell kind of bad. :( Can't imagine what that would taste like in coffee.
I suppose it might defeat the purpose of percolator coffee but you could try using a paper filter inside the basket to keep the grounds contained, maybe?
Some say it is to take the bitter or strong flavor from the coffee. Others say it helps with keeping the grounds from getting in your pour, which is why I tried it. It didn't help.
omg walk the perc lol i laughed this entire video
You can send it back to the museum now Gail lol 😂. Just kidding
Lol!! :D

Man, old people sure liked calling them "perculators," didn't they? 😂
This is how I make coffee now.
“The 50s.... and the 60s” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I need an electric perculator with a timer or strength changer basically. I bought a perculator, I think it was the Presto one and it doesnt brew long enough to make good coffee. It just gets to boil and stops brewing. It wont be good unless it brews it for a few minutes or so. I dont know whats wrong with all these perculators but Ive literally only seen like 1 decent one on the market, that has a timer, so I bought that one and love it. WTF though? GOd all these other ones suck, or I dont know what Im doing wrong then.
Would this be too heavy to throw in a suitcase? I am looking to avoid being held hostage to hotels and cruise ship room coffee makers
te water has to be hot when u serve it to the percolator? or the water can be room temperature and the percoletor will heat it up?
You add cold water to the percolator for brewing.
Old farberware, stainless stove top
91 g. Coffee smaller than French press, time 16 minutes…best coffee. I also roast my own 😊
One trick for less sediment is to put a coffee liner at the top. Just poke a hole and add your grounds!
The best way to make coffee and the cheapest way as well old fashioned but I will tell You one thing it is better than getting ripped off by those pod companies and another thing you are supposed to put the tube in the filter basket before you put the coffee in this lady is crazy ha ha
Take a large unscented kleenex, poke a center hole in it, fill it, in the basket, with your ground coffee. Then wrap the kleenex over the top, piercing enough holes in each corner to hold it on the center post. Then perk. Then all you have to do is remove the kleenex. And not pay $.50 per filter if you buy filters for the same purpose.
Gail the coffee is *Boiled* in a perk pot, so 100C or 212F right outa the pot
كأنها قهوة عربية خفيفة
I thought peculators were bad because they kept recycling brewed coffee through the grounds.
That's a common saw, but if you think about how coffee brewing works, you should be able to figure out why that's a silly knock on the percolator method. All methods strengthen the infusion through the course of brewing by doing essentially just that, one way or another.
bollocks you dont keep using the same grounds all the time dugh
She burned her tongue off😂I assure you
It seems greater than paper filtered machine in many aspects.
Why It's not popular these days. It's harder to clean I guess.
Why is there no percolator made out of glass! Or partly made out of glass.!
Pyrex made an almost all glass stove top percolator. You can find them on eBay . Also there are vintage electric ones that are partly glass also on eBay.
Silex Percolators from the 1970's are mostly glass
Why don't you carry electric percolators anymore?
2:42
I only watch Gail I used to watch the whole channel but since u took of good morning Gail I dot. Watch
1DJSkittles yeah I'm with you I miss that program.
No more bitter coffee!!!!!
😂🤣😂 🙌🏼🌟
So just old moka pot
Arse holl
Percolator will make a comeback cause people don't want plastic heated coffee in their bodies.
Europeans have the stove-top Moka pot and we're still selling percolators?!?
She looks underwhelmed after drinking it.
did they have electricity when you were a yungin ? .. just kidding, i get a big kick out of your humor and personality .. I wish you lived next door !
Old people 😂😅🤣😅
There are filters for these, but you usually have to purchase them online.
