  • In this episode of Riichi Mahjong Guide, we go over the different kinds of tenbou, or point sticks, that are used to keep track of scores in riichi mahjong. I also discuss some miscellaneous rules that have to do with rankings.

So how many of each stick value do you start with exactly? It's 25,000 points total, but I doubt everyone gets two 10k sticks and one 5k stick to start right? You need smaller sticks to pay for smaller hands.

A Japanese mahjong set usually only comes with as many point sticks as you need, or perhaps just a few extra. But to answer your question, players normally start with one 10k, two 5k, four 1k, and ten 100-point sticks for a 25k start. For 30k, just add another one 5k or five 1k sticks, whichever is available. And if 500-point sticks are available, you would replace five 100-point sticks with one.

in terms of point exchange, what if you end up in a situation where you have no 1k point sticks? is it acceptable to ask someone "hey can i give you a 5k stick for 5 1k point sticks in case i want to declare riichi?"

Yes, that would be the best thing to do in that case. Try to ask before the start of the next hand so that making change doesn't interrupt the flow of the game.

Potentially complicated question about the ranking:
Arcturus says this about the West Round:
The instant a player scores above the target points with a winning hand, then the game ends immediately; and the same player wins the game. However, ryuukyoku cannot end the game. For a regular hanchan game, this extra round is indicated as the West round.
Okay, so ryuukyoku cannot end the game. So what happens if someone is at 29k and the only one in tenpai, now they have 32k but the game doesn't end. Now someone with say 28100 wins a 2k points hand from someone. Now this player won a hand and is above 30 k. But they're still behind the player with 32k. So what happens? 32k player wins? 30100 player wins because they scored "above the target points with a winning hand, then the game ends immediately" and 32k is 2nd place? Or game goes on maybe?

It appears that the description on Arcturus is mistaken. I just checked Tenhou's manual, and it states that ryuukyoku can end the game if a player ends up above 30k. However, in the case that the dealer gets renchan (like if they were also tenpai), if they are not in 1st place, then the game continues. Dealer renchan takes priority over ending the game upon hitting the target score in sudden death rounds.

@@LightGrunty Thanks man! I had a situation like that recently and no one was sure if the game should end.
That explains why the description on arcturus caused more confusion than it provided answers.

@@LightGrunty A simpler follow-up question. In West Round, do you need above 30k or would exactly 30k suffice?

      @@enecofan888 30k exactly would suffice.

It would depend on where you live. I would suggest searching for them online.
