I jut achieved my first 1-wait Thirteen Orphans yesterday! It was a real nail-biter, as I called the Green Dragon on the final discard... I do not think I have ever hoped more profoundly for a tile in my limited Mahjong history xD

fact I'm interested in: 13 orphans doesn't match the Japanese name "国士無双 / Kokushi Musou". The translation means "distinguished person"

Loving these videos so first off thanks for explaining everything and making! Im a little confused on Ron Chankan (not sure on the spelling, but essentially stealing a kan)
I know Ron is only to finish your hand, but what are the limitations? Can it be called on an open or closed kan, or only one of them? Also, is it only applicable to Chuuren Poutou or is it possible to call that on any other yaku/yakuman?
Thanks again! Been playing Richii Mahjong for the past few weeks on the Yakuza games and these videos have been really helpful on explaining a lot of the things they dont go over

Thank you for the kind words.
To answer your question, in most rule sets, chankan can only be used on a kan that would be upgraded from a pon. In this case, the yaku for the hand would not matter.
However, in some rule sets, there is an exception that would allow you to declare ron against a closed kan if you are tenpai for kokushi musou. This is a nonstandard rule, so most rule sets don't allow it, but there are still some that do.

@@LightGrunty Thanks for the fast reply! Another quick question...
I know you have a video near the end of the series where it shows you actually playing the app and explaining your hands which is super helpful. Do you have any other recommendations on things to watch? I know theres a book youve mentioned which i plan on looking into, but Ive tried watching some world series of mahjong and I find it moves around a bit fast for me to catch it and really understand the scoring. Im sure that comes with time but the tips and explanations youve given so far have been incredibly helpful

@@kevinmiles2755 The "World Series of Mahjong" is actually its own thing and not Japanese riichi mahjong, so don't worry about that.
If you're still getting used to the game, I would just recommend playing against AI opponents in a video game so that you can go at your own pace. You've already been playing on Yakuza, but I would also recommend Kemono Mahjong.
Once you're comfortable with the flow of the game and can make discards relatively quickly, like within a few seconds, you could try moving on to online platforms to play against other people, if that's what you're interested in. There's also Riichi Book I, as mentioned, which is a comprehensive resource on the fundamental strategies of riichi mahjong.

As I understand it, once you attain a Yakuman hand, you can not add on to the score to further increase the score count. I was to the ova and I got the following hand and my question is that we scored it 32,000 as I did sumo on an open hand. However I did pick the winning white dragon from the dead wall, as I late kan the green dragon. Also, my hand was honitsu and the south wind was my seat wind:
3 White dragon, 4 green dragon, 3 red dragon, 2 south wind and 5, 6, 7 of man
So with this hand, the final count I could collect was 32,000, correct?

Yes, other yaku do not add to the score of a yakuman. You can think of yakuman as being in a separate class of hands that are incompatible with normal yaku.

One question, can you rob a concealed kan for 9 gates?

    • @LightGrunty
      @LightGrunty  6 місяців тому

No. In general, you cannot rob a concealed kan, and the only exception that some rule sets might have is for Thirteen Orphans.

No, there cannot be any calls, not even closed kans.
