Expanding Gravel Driveway and Parking Area with Backhoe and Kubota

- Today we work to expand a driveway and parking lot area with crushed limestone at my cousin Tony's house using the 310SE John Deere Backhoe and a Kubota BX2380 sub compact tractor with loader. Also featured is the use of my F-750 dump truck where I make a few less than perfect attempts to spread stone! Tony had an area between his concrete driveway and a nearby old stone driveway that really wasn't useful and a pain to maintain, so we ripped out the sod and filled it in with new gravel (crushed limestone actually). We also needed to grade out the dirt spoils that came out of the newly created parking lot area. This made for a nice Saturday morning project and provided him with much more usable parking area for his boat and trailers, as well as providing more guest parking. Tony finished up some of the dirt work off camera and even had it all seeded with grass the same day!

i would have backed over that fire hydrant twenty times before i left there hahaha. always look forward to your videos!
Haha! Fireman are attracted to fire hydrants! I came pretty close a couple of times actually! Appreciate you watching!
Thanks Captain for the recommendation - good channel to watch.
@@markdavies9912 Thanks for stopping by and checking it out. I'm thankful to the Captain for the shout-out for sure!
@@digdrivediy nice little kubota thats what i need
You mean dirt perfect would have lol capt kleeman
Great video! Love the grading and spreading of the gravel! I'm a fan of your videos! Thanks for the commentary...
You edging of the topsoil is another level along with the grading of the ground!
Your attention to details and the edging is the best ever!
Rewatched! Liked and shared! Spray paint came out.... So organized and efficient! I love how you oragnize a project for the dirt work!
Neil, you have THE BEST channel and content on UA-cam sir! I look forward to the new videos and I am still enjoying the old and rewatching them as well.... You are an excellent story teller and your projects especially dirt work is the best!
Thanks for helping me out with that project, I've been wanting to do that for years. It sure went smooth, I got grass seed down that same day and it's filling in nicely already. Thanks again
That was a really nice project. Glad we had Alex's tractor too. Always more rewarding to finish something you've been hoping to do for a long time. Hope the new parking area serves you well.
Easily one of my favs on your channel!
Super job nice pad!
Thanks!
Good morning from Canada, good looking job on spreading. I don't think anyone will be as good as that cris guy. Thank you for sharing
Thanks Steven! I completely agree in that Chris from Bailey is gonna be hard to beat (If that is in fact what you're referring to from my "Best Dump Truck Driver" video). This was a fun Saturday project and glad you enjoyed. Love hearing from our friends in Canada!
Hi. I'm here because The Captain sent me! (Hi Captain Kleeman!) Nice project. I wish my cousin Bill wasn't on the other end of the State of Florida, and the rest of them even farther away! I sometimes get to "run" a New Holland tractor a few sizes above the Kubota (It pulls a 5' brush hog). Mostly I mow but I occasionally get into bigger trouble with the loader on the front ;-). I definitely learn more from Captain Kleeman, and I'll bet from you too than from watching Dirt Perfect and Letsdig18 or even Andrew Camarata.. Those guys just have way too much seat time and talent.
I've "liked", subscribed", hit the notification button and commented. All I have to left to do is "share"! ;-)
Hi Tim! Thanks so much for stopping by and supporting the channel. I'm always learning something new as I work to do things around the house and for friends and family. I hope that you find some videos here that are helpful and entertaining. Thanks for commenting and telling me a little about yourself. Take Care!
Great job keep up the great work love your videos thank you need more videos ok
I love your straight neat lines. Thats how I do it also. so many I see dont do that, and it drives me crazy.
Thanks. Yeah, I gotta have em straight!
Yes Captain Kleeman sent me too! Good job on the driveway add on.
I really appreciate the time you took to have a look and check out my channel. It is very rewarding to spend the time to create these videos and then have folks be nice enough to leave a comment. Thanks for the kind words and for dropping in on the channel.
That was a perfect solution! And, it looked good too.
I have the backhoe version of his Kubota (BX23S). I could feel his pain trying to ‘help’ you spread gravel. It can’t do the job near as fast... but, it can do it just as good. And, is the perfect tool for finishing out the dirt on the side!
Good vid... camera angles were perfect!
That Kubota is a handy tractor for sure. I'm a fan of any tractor at any size as I use my little ones as much or more often than the big one. Everything has it's purpose and sometimes time and patience is all you need to do a bigger job with a smaller machine. Often times it can be even more satisfying to finish something with a little guy. Thanks for the kind words again. You know how to boost a guy's wavering confidence!
those bx2380s are amazing machines they re extremely capable if you get the right model
Oh yeah, it is a sweet little tractor. Super handy to have.
TLBs are often vary under rated pieces of equipment and you can always tell an experienced operator immediately
What does TABS stand for?
@@digdrivediy *TLBs. Damn auto correct. Tractor loader backhoe.
@@Miniscapes515 Haha! Gotcha. I should have known auto correct strikes again! Thanks for the watch and comments!
Great job! That tailgating is tricky I’m trying to learn how to do it in my Peterbilt. Lots of timing to get right. Appreciate you sharing
Thanks a lot! I was thinking of you when I was attempting the tailgating. I don't get enough opportunities to try it anymore but it's fun to work on it when the chance comes up. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Neil Koch: Dig-Drive-DIY yeah I enjoy trying to master it as well. Definitely not as easy as some make it look
@@digdrivediy Might try tightening your chains up a bit. Slows amount of stone coming out and gives you time to adjust bed and speed while spreading. It helps me out at times. Still trying to get it down myself.
COOL!
Came over and subbed on the recommendation of Captain Kleeman.....enjoyed this video and watching you work and look forward to more of your videos
That's terrific! Thanks for stopping by and the great comment! Hope to see you around!
Take care!
that is a great looking gravel pad, the only problem is, that these nice pads will get filled with vehicles too fast. After all, now that you got this nice clean space to park, might as well get this and that and park it there too. So I see another expansion coming in the future ;)
You are exactly right! They say the same thing about building a new barn. Seems you never build it big enough! You can bet if we add on to this driveway I'll make a video of it! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
@@digdrivediy Well actually, now that you mention it, I'm thinking about a new pole barn straight back to the rear of the property with access from this drive way expansion
I am hooked
Well I'll be a Monkey's Uncle! The Dirk? I knew you would be Googling me eventually! Great to hear from you buddy!
Spotted you in the comments chatting to Captain Kleeman, then the bold boy gives you a shout at the end of his video, so I just had to sign up.
I was just as surprised as you were! Thanks so much for stopping by and checking out the channel. The Captain has a great bunch of subscribers and I'm so humbled that he gave me a mention. Thanks for the comment and hope to see you around!
same here ;)
Ok, now only posting videos on Thursdays and Sundays makes sense. Hell Neil, you have 438 1/2 relatives living within 10 miles of each other. No wonder your are busy. Oh, the 1/2 relative? Ya, I know 4th cousin, twice removed Erwin is a little "different." I did want to include him though. Who could forget the 4th of July, trapeze, llama and questionable fireworks incident of 94? Good times!!!
Haha! I didn't know you knew Erwin. We don't talk about him much. But yeah, you have an accurate cousin and relative count there! I won't even talk about my wife's side of the family... :)
Great little tractor. Wrong color though....
I know when you spray the grounds the attention to detail goes way up in your projects!
Haha! That paint is expensive so only used one very important! 😉
@@digdrivediy love it!
hey Neil curious as why you chose not to put down any geotexitle fabric? cool video!
Thanks Jason. When the subsoil is good enough, we find there is no need for geotextile fabric. I have only ever used that in situations where the subsoil base layer is soft or spongy. Around here, we have really dense, hard clay that's 8"-12" below the surface. You can dump stone right on top of it and never have a problem. I'm editing another driveway video with a nice clay base right as I type this that further illustrates what I'm talking about so maybe you'll catch that one too someday. Thanks so much for watching!
@@digdrivediy dang that was a quick response! Thanks and I’ll keep an eye on my alerts for the video.
Do you use the float bucket for all of your work
I'm not sure I know what you mean by float bucket? I might need to revisit this video to be sure. I use that 2 foot bucket with flat cutting edge for a good majority of what I do if that's what you mean. I have a couple other buckets though too.
YOUNG MAN ,
I LIVE IN NORTHEAST LOUISIANA / MY GRAVEL DRIVEWAY I USE D - STONE JUST BIGGER STONE BECAUSE I LIVE DOWN THE HILL , WANT WASH STAY IN PLACE
I wish we had a few hills around here. Everything is as flat as a pancake. Good idea using that larger stone for your application for sure!
YOUNG MAN ,
NEVER USE LOADER BLADE TO BACK DRAG / USE BACK OF THE LOADER BUCKET OR LOAD BUCKET UP WHEN MATERIAL TO BACK DRAG THIS WAY U WILL PUT ALOT MORE WEIGHT ON THE STONE OR FILL DIRT WILL PACK DOWN BETTER , EVERY TIME !
I always try to use the back of the bucket and hardly ever use the blade. That's really good advice though I never try to grade with the bucket standing up on edge. You sound like you've got some time working on stuff so I appreciate you watching and commenting. Take care down there in Louisiana and great to hear from you kind sir.
I know that (like me) admit it or not, deep down you can't help but feel that if it's not green it isn't a real tractor; but calling a man's tractor "cute" is just plain mean!
All in good fun :)

You do great work! I especially like your jacket!
Thanks Greg! All my best jackets are free 👍🏻
