How to Install a Gravel Parking Strip, Part 2 - Spreading Gravel - DIY!

- During the COVID-19 stay-at-home order, we decided to install a gravel parking strip. Instead of hiring a professional landscaper, we did all the manual labor ourselves. I recorded video of the entire week-long installation process from which I assembled two separate videos: Part 1 - Site Preparation, and Part 2 - Spreading the Gravel.
The total cost of this project: $630:
2 each 100' Rolls of Vigoro Heavy-Duty Weed Control Fabric and staples: $94
2 each 50' Rolls of Vigoro Heavy-Duty Edging and 24 stakes: $107
10 Yards of 5/8" Minus Crushed Basalt Gravel: $429
Our Gravel Parking Strip project involved 10 stages:
1. Call Before You Dig (homeowners call 811).
Although I was only digging about a 6” depth to remove sod, there were underground utilities and a community waterline, and I wanted them marked before the heavy gravel truck delivered the gravel.
2. Remove a 9 ½' x 72' strip if lawn that borders the busy road into our community. Fortunately, two of our neighbors gladly took the sod.
3. Level the dirt and remove soil to a depth of 4" along the edges of the lawn, the concrete driveway and street.
4. Install a heavy-duty weed control fabric.
5. Install a heavy-duty plastic edging to separate the gravel from the lawn.
6. Receive delivery of the gravel.
7. Spread the gravel.
8. Hose down the gravel to settle the dust.
9. Drive back and forth over the gravel in our car to compact it.
10. Make adjustments to bumps and dips in the gravel and compact again.
I hope that you enjoy watching this video and that my gravel parking strip project experience will help you with your gravel project!
Very nice man to drop the gravel so carefully.
Right?
His company should be proud to have him represent them!
Great personality too!!
Not only an fine improvement to your property, but a wonderful project & time shared with your wife. Staying active together is what it’s all about. Bravo, sir!
You live in a beautiful area. Love the views.
Where ever you live its beautiful. I love a man that takes on a project and complete it the way you did. I just watched for the enjoyment of it. Good job. Thank you and your wife for sharing.
Thank you so much!
You have a beautiful yard. The sound of gravel is so satisfying.
What a beautiful view of the mountains! Enjoyed your video!
Thanks for your video, I appreciate that you didn't use any fancy expensive machine! So I know I can do it on a budget! Beautiful view by the way!! Cheers from Utah!
excellent leveling, you sure have a talent. i had a driveway cut and stoned by a dozer and its not that level. Well done and thanks for the video
Great job and all manual work by you and your wife shows what can be done with basic tools hard work
You have inspired me to do my driveway!!!
great job. That's a nice view you have there as well.
Fantastic view from your property.
It really is!
Great front door scenery..Ohh and the gravel turned out very well :) Cheers
Truly talented for a home diy project
Good job. The secret to staying young is to work. Good for you two.
Your videos are very good and pleasant to watch
I couldn’t of asked for a better video. Really appreciate the effort you put in to making this. I am about to do a parking spot for my RV and this is exactly what I needed to see.
Glad it was helpful!
You done a great job on it, match good too.
The best I have ever seen for this kind of DIY. Hats off to you sir !
Much appreciated! I am going to widen this parking strip to meet our privacy fence that we had installed at a later date, and I am not sure if I want to do this again myself. Thank you for watching and for your comment!
Outstanding job, that looks really professional. How's it holding up a few months later? Anything you would have done differently? What was the difference in cost between DIY vs contracting it out? Thanks for documenting the process and uploading for everyone to see. Best wishes to you and your family 🙏❤️
You gotta love not one neighbor kid came over to help. Live in Texas I send my kids over to older neighbors all the time.
In the middle of a pandemic?
Parents like this is why so many kids go missing...smh
Nicely done and what an incredible view of the mountains.
Thank you for the compliment!
You got a good woman there helping you. Shes a keeper….
You have a beautiful view from your home
the morning view when the truck showed up was fantastic!
I guess if you live there you might just get used to it.
I have a dense growth of trees that is 300 ft from my front door. I am glad I don’t have to look at houses(for now) never know what the next 20 years will bring,
Your are a delight to watch. Great job!! Looks amazing!!
Thank you! Not sure what to post next. Any suggestions?
Very smart idea to drop it in separate piles like that.
I would move out West just for that view.
I was genuinely sad that it was over haha. Great videos, thank you.
WOW,,, that was outstanding. You did an excellent job.
Great video, your home is breathtaking, such incredible scenary
Thanks so much!
Great video. Couple questions, how good is the weed protection fabric? I have layed about 15 tons or gravel and grass grew right trew it. Would u recommend putting something like that fabric down before i go and redo it again? I am laying sb2 gravel down and its going to be used for a food truck. That fabric wouldn't cause the rock to slide around when vehicles drive on it would it? Thanks!
Good video(s), I came across it while looking for ideas (how-to videos) on making a gravel pad for an RV.
Watching and then noticing your view I was thinking to myself; "I think those are the Olympic mountains."
Then Blake sad and gravel showed up. Yep, I was right you all must be in Sequim or Port Angeles.
We are in Port Angeles. Thanks for the Video neighbor, it was helpful.
Wow great video. Loved the narration and you were like a machine. A lot of hard work. Rent a buggy to push that around from Home Depot
Y'all got a great view!
Top notch job👍
Great looking pad, pros couldn't do any better!
Great job.love your attitude
loved watching your videos!! you did an excellent job both on the project and video/editing it!! planning out a gravel patio so watched for techniques. Was sort of worried about you guys as cars whizzed by!!
Hey, thanks! I’m paying the price for overworking my aging body. Be careful. RW
Beautiful back ground……must be Canada as the driver saluted British style.
Nice, I'm about to do the same, although in front of my front yard retaining wall. Getting the dump truck to do piles might be the way I have to go. Good idea
Tight work!!
Respect from Texas.
You have a great view, looks like paradise :)
It is! Thank you for watching!
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
I'm glad you enjoyed watching!
Thanks for the upload and 🎉Bravo to both of you 👍
What was the exact gravel please. We need to do the same thing. Thanks for the info
Your a Beast!!! Great job👍🏻
thank you for sharing, hope you and the delightful young lady. are having a beautiful day
Great video! Thank you for sharing.
the car idea was so smart LOL!!!!
Great job. I'm sure it was a labor of love and not just about the money
That view is amazing
The gravel guy at 2.09 was so cute!
This is so wholesome! I nearly teared up at the end... Are you from Canada!?! wow
Everyone will love this!Is it solid now like concrete? Will the rain water deposit in the middle?or it drain down?
Wow! that an amazing view! And the truck driver is a cool dude most I've dealt w were jerks! lol
Nice job! 👌🏼
Great Job! Lot of work...
Yes it was! Thanks for watching!
That looks amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
This looks like my homestate of WA. I'm in TX now and hate it w a passion. Its not pretty here at all, not like WA is. Both Eastern and Western WA are stunning and completely opposite of one another. I went to college in Pullman and I would give just about anything to live there again, maybe a summer home. Your home is beautiful too. And that view...never gets old! I didn't truly appreciate it until after I left and now i am very homesick.
Several of our new neighbors moved from Texas to live here in Sequim. Sequim is not for everyone though. A few moved back or to another state after living here for only one year. The grass is always greener…. Thank you for your comment!
You did a great job man. 🤜🏻🤛🏻 ( I would’ve came over to offer help if you were my neighbor and I saw you doing at that by yourselves ) Nice work👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks, virtual neighbor! Next time maybe 😊!
Loved this video! ❤ loved you guys and your view is insanely gorgeous!!!!!
Wow! I’m impressed!!!
Great job 👍🏾
Great work mate , very particular, the best way to be 👍
Thank you I need learn a few things from your video.
Great job. Well done.
How long do you think it would take to spread 3 cubic yards of gravel over a 15'x20' area?
This helps a lot thanks. We are adding one to our house too.
Great video. How much does a truck load cost with delivery?
Great job.
Thank you so much for posting this!
I will be doing this project this summer.
So gravel pavers are not necessary?
Depends. The soil on our property is sand. The preparation and spreading of gravel has worked out well so far. But, weeds grow in most any material. And gravel is loose, so raking out the tire marks is expected.
Thank you for your comment!
Good job! Curious how it held up after some heavy rain? Puddles? Washed away slots?
Good question! The gravel strip has held up better than I would have expected. There are a few weeds appearing now and then, but they are easy to remove because their roots do not penetrate the weed block fabric. Since the fabric allows water to flow through, there never has been any puddles or standing water. Thanks for your comment and watching my video!
Great job guys
What type of material did you use for weed control? Have any weeds broken through weed barrier?
Good job!
man what hill are you looking at? Looks great.
I didn't add sand under my gravel, I was worried I made a mistake. But I see you didn't add sand either so now i feel much better. Are you in cold climate as well? I realize the gravel i picked is very fine and dusty much like the one in this video and I am hoping I don't regret it so I was thinking would it make any sense adding gravel of bigger size on top of the already fine gravel?
Did you have to obtain permit for this project from the city?
Thank you for your videos! Thinking about purchasing Toy hauler and needed to learn about creating a parking pad. Did this end up being level?
Not perfectly level, but that wasn't necessary for our use as a parking strip. Thanks for watching!
looks nice n sharp. well done.
Love this! Great job!
What do you think of pouring concrete bags over the gravel for firment?
how much gravel u knew to use awesome job n pleasant Man
Awesome job
so how much gravel did you have to purchase for that strip of land
How's it looking 4 years later?
Came across your video as I want to add some more parking space and could stand to lose some grass. This looks like a good method. I'm curious if the plastic sheets are better than something like sand at keeping the weeds down.
Good question! In my experience, using plastic as a weed block is not a good idea. Our neighbor used plastic for his gravel strip and when it rains, the water ponds up making it ugly and dangerous during freezing weather. It is always best to use a landscape fabric that allows water to permeate through to the soil beneath. There are a lot of landscape fabric products from which to choose. Eventually, weeds will grow in the gravel, mulch or whatever is on top of the fabric no matter which product you use. When I see weeds emerge, I will manually remove them. This is easily done, especially after rainfall. Using a weed killer like Roundup works too, but I don't like the look or dead, dried weeds in my landscaped areas. Thank you for your comment, and good luck with your project!
@@randallwingett Thanks! I appreciate the point about water buildup. Makes sense.
Sir do you mind what crush n run you place down. I need to extended my driveway. Thanks.Great work, great video.
10 Yards of 5/8" Minus Crushed Basalt Gravel: $429. Read my description.
wow look at that view!
Was going to comment the same!
What state is this its beautiful!
This was very helpful. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
beautiful!
Great job!
Do you have a problem with the fabric coming up through the rock where people haves turned their front tires on it?
Good question! The fabric has not been exposed at any location since we installed this garvel parking strip a year and a half ago, despite many contractor trucks parking here. Because it was so windy during the installation, I used a lot of clips to secure the fabric to the dirt. Ocassionally, I need to smooth out tire marks caused by bicycles and cars that pulled over onto the strip, but this is rare. Most of the maintenance required is picking up little piles of gravel kicked into the grass by the many deer in our community, and trimming the lawn along the plastic edging. Trimming is easy to do using my cordless Ryobi string trimmer because the rounded edge of the Vigoro landscaping edging allows the string to cut the grass in a straight line without damaging the edging. A few weeds do appear from time to time, but they are easy to remove mechanically before their roots pepetrate the fabric. Along the street edge, the gravel is the shallowest so I spray Round-up to control weeds and grass. Bottom line: this gravel parking strip continues to be a usefull, attractive, low maintenance improvement to our front yard.
Thank you for watching my video and for your comment!

Thanks for posting.
Amazing!!!
That view at 2,37! :0
How has it held up?
Still holding up?
They(supposed experts) say you need couple inches of sub base in addition to the finished gravel.
The gravel parking strip is holding up just fine. Thanks for asking!
Whether or not you need a sub base, I'm thinking depends on the soil type and the expected traffic. Our property is on a ridge of sand, a sandy moraine of glacial deposits. Heavy rocks and concrete or brick garden borders gradually sink into the soil. The weed block fabric serves as a support for the layer of gravel. Yes, there has been some minor sinking in places over time. That said, the many loads of gravel that was dumped directly on the sod to make our gravel driveway and RV pad has not sunk!
Why don’t you use cardboards before applying the landscape linen?
Love it good job
Thank you! This gravel parking strip has been used many times by contractors working on our home improvements and it is holding up great! Thanks for visiting my channel.
