Stray Cats & Eddie Van Halen 8-18-88 NYC performance

- The Stray Cats bring on Eddie Van Halen (at the 2:35 mark) for a NYC performance, joined later for a finale with star bassist Tony Levin, keyboardist Jan Hammer, David Gilmour, Waylon Jennings, Les Paul, BB King, Stanley Jordan, and Steve Miller. Broadcast on a pay cable TV network 8-18-88.
The BetaGems channel also has "Les Paul 10-1-87 late night TV performance," "The Teenagers with Les Paul 1947 Sarge Goes to College film short," "Van Halen 9-5-91 1st live TV performance with Sammy Hagar," "Stray Cats 4-14-89 television award show performance," "Stray Cats 10-17-81 late night TV performance," "Dickey Betts & Brian Setzer 11-20-84 late night TV performance," "Brian Setzer & Dickey Betts 11-20-84 PT 2 late night TV performance" "Brian Setzer 11-20-84 late night TV performance," "Stray Cats New Year's Eve 12-31-83 Savoy Theater NYC Part 1 of 2," "Stray Cats New Year's Eve 12-31-83 Savoy Theater NYC Part 2 of 2," and "Brian Setzer & Dave Edmunds 11-20-84 late night TV performance."
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from the early 1980s into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on UA-cam or online.
Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads. In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area.
Can we give a round of applause to the anonymous sound guy who had to mix 15 guitar legends simultaneously on stage?! No pressure 😅
👏👏👏
Yeah, no shit!👏
I'm a Drummer!; so no
No shit. Great thing to realize there bud!
@@michaelbutler275 yeah, I got mad skills when it comes to "realizing great things," bud 😎
Once upon a time when music was handmade and giants rocked the earth....
exactly will we ever see this again?
Truth right there 👍
I just had 100 T shirts made with your epitaph ..thanks!
it's still that way but ya gotta look harder unfortunately.
Outstanding comment Mr. white..
These poor kids coming up don’t know Les Paul is a person, a player, and a legend. Thank you for preserving this and resurrecting this for the generations to come.
You might be surprised. A lot of kids listen to their grandparents and parents music because no new rock is happening.
Lester Polfuss!!!
And,, Les created multi-track recording
Then it's our duty to educate them.
I followed this fellow based solely on this video, on what will never again transpire. Mr. Les Paul, Mr. BB King, and the incredible ensemble is one for the ages.
Easy to overlook that Slim Jim Phantom and Lee Rocker held the groove on their stand-up kit and bass for that monster ensemble. The 'Cats had that beat but to suddenly have that many legendary musicians playing over it, what a rush that must have been.
I had to notice that myself
All the respect to them as well
And they were all under 30 at that time.
yes..great
Super job to play drums in the style of the rock roll drumming sound invented by D.J. Domenico Fontana (Elvis Presley's drummer for decades)
Tremendous musicians...otherwise they couldn't play with Brian!
I was stageside for this whole performance. I worked at this theater and walked in to work that day and had the best time. I got to party with everyone after the show as well!
Who was backing Les Paul, like on that second song when seemingly nobody else was playing?
Awesome! What a guitarists wet dream!
Im not worthy..............you lucky guy ..you..you.......you bastard ..lol
I doubt that very seriously happened! You probably partied with Elvis as well
I assumed it was Les Paul himself using tape loops (and tape delay).
Brian Setzer is one of the greatest guitar players of all time and doesn't get nearly enough recognition! He’s totally holding his own here with EVH and all the other Guitar Gods…and I’ll be honest I just wanted to hear more Brian!
I'm a fan.
Great guitar players??? Nah. Dude can swing, though.
@@jwil4905 you have an “interesting” bar.
How true
@@jwil4905 Who are your personal top 5?
That was an epic amount of talent on that stage , all giving each other the space to shine
the respect of the times..
Wow all the greats and the original innovator les Paul on stage !!! How great that is!!! The best ,,, and I mean the best guitar footage ever!!! sadly how many of our guitars heroes in this footage have passed away 🥲just a great video!!!
Usually don't like all star jams, but this one is pretty cool.
So many diverse stars . Not the same old clapton joined by ron wood and ringo star crap
if you're gonna rock, might as well do it with those guys.
Had to be a tribute or bday for Les Paul
@@tonymctony4551 Eric didn't need to be there nor did Ringo or Ronnie. Eric's done a lot over the years whether it's good or crap is up to the audience or the people that are listening.
@@tonymctony4551 lulz. agreed.
Holy S#!+!! I was 15 miles away, 16 years old and had no idea. Wow! Thanks so much for this amazing upload!
Mr BB King…
Every guitar on stage rolled the volume off with the quickness.
Recognize
WORD !!!!
True, but i think there was a rehearsal and each guitarist knew when to come in beforehand, and do their solo, and the sound engineers knew what mikes to turn on and fade for others.
Wow, how can a music lover watch this and not get tears in their eyes. This was a fantastic jam.
Dude I about lost my mind! I can’t believe what my eyes just beheld🤘😧🎸how have I never seen this?!
RIP...
Les Paul , B.B. King and EVH .
Got chills watching this how could you not feel the emotion from this. Absolute Legends!!!!
Stray Cats had brass balls playing their kind of music, when the glam rock was king
... even in the era of "New Wave" and the explosion of synth, they earned deep respect from music fans worldwide. They totally rocked the US Festival, just three talented guys on stage engaging their largest crowd of tens of thousands of music lovers. But seeing Brian enjoy this lineup of guitar legends and showcasing Les Paul, the legend that inspired him, must have been a real treat for all time.
They were around a bit before glam really became a big thing, so they already had a good following.
@@cdncitizen4700 They still had the glam rock mullets though ;)
And their music stands the test of time better than 90% of the hair metal bands. How about that!
And then they got overshadowed by up and coming bands like Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy etc. I never could understand that.
Amazing!!
All the greats 🙌
Stanley Jordan, BB king, Les Paul . David Gilmore
Eddie VanHalen ... I can't tell who else ...
Just awesome 👌
Steve Miller, Robert Cray
This has got to be one of the best 9 minutes and 6 seconds in rock n roll history, love it!
Well said 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Brian is easily up there with the greats. He's so underrated. He does all the musical arrangements for his orchestra. He's just an AMAZING musician in his own right!!
He’s rated exactly where he belongs.
Underrated? Who in the world ever said that? UA-cam's favorite and overused comment.
@@earlludwig3614 Now that's an underrated comment!
He’s certainly not underrated in my world , and to pull that amount of disparet guitarist into one jam is consummate musicianship , my most utmost respect , for the sound engineers too , great entertainment , cheers !
always loved the stray cats, setzer criminally underrated, he swings up their with srv. eddie loved les paul, and experimented with sound like les did, their innovations go largely unnoticed unless you're a player. good stuff.
Ed and Les were good friends! Les used to tell Eddie the besides Leo Fender, nobody knew how to make a guitar worth a sh*t but he and Ed. They spoke often and were very close.
Wow! Been playing Les Paul's for the last 25 years live, with any luck another 25. Les Paul was a fantastic man, And a hell of a guitar player!
Taught Steve Miller how to play.....
The one and only, and legendary, Les Paul. the man was shredding like this well into his nineties. The man responsible for the modern electric guitar. RIP Les Paul...
I remember seeing Edward play with Les Paul, but never seen the all-star thing with all the legends! This was great to watch. (David Gilmour, Brian Setzer, Jan Hammer, Les Paul, Stanley Jordan, Eddie Van Halen, B.B. King, Steve Miller, etc. Good stuff!
YES
Too bad most kids today don't know who S Jordan is smh
@@stephenmerchant9532 or who most of the others are either 🤷♂️
Was Stevie Ray Vaughn in there too ? Video is blurry, but there's a guy in back with a wide brimmed Mexican style hat that looks like SRV
@@andrewfischer556 I think that was W Jennings
That Les Paul solo at the end is pretty amazing.
DAMALS WAR DIE WELT NOCH SAUBER ALS JETZT - DANKE !
How was no one tripping over guitar cables? That was at least 10 well known guitarists there. The collective feedback and hiss/static must’ve been a nightmare for the sound engineers to overcome. Lol. Les ftw!
This is The Best video I have ever seen on UA-cam... I think I'll quit, now I'm ahead. Thankyou.
I’m no musician, but the level of talent on that stage is staggering. Les Paul was a genius, as were/are many on that stage that night. Sadly, I don’t think that that level of talent exists today, as the music industry has been reduced to “America’s Got Talent” and other such prime time shows that are looking for what amounts to one hit wonders. That format and model completely overlooks and dismisses the hours and years of effort, the failures, etc. that come with honing and building the talent necessary to reach and achieve the status of the musicians in this clip. Thank you for showing this and reminding us of how wonderful and amazing music was and could hopefully be again with hard work and sheer talent.
Check out Billy strings, Matt Schofield, Eric gales to name a few. There's a younger generation bringing the magic, you just gotta look for them. The big music producers have burned so many great musicians so they're not signing, hence not getting the spotlight
Wow, I have never seen such crew of amazing guitarists like that Great guitarist in the end either.
The closest thing I have ever seen or heard, to what a jam session in Heaven must be like! WOW! Eddie was the best ever, at this moment in time.
Jimi, Stevie and Eddie are smiling at us from above ✨🎸🎸🎸✨
This is one of the greatest things I've ever seen
Did you notice the lit cig at the top of his guitar?
@@mortb9 First thing!
@@nickphillips1721 Van Halen was my first concert in 82. I didn't know it at the time, but Valerie Bertinelli lived about 30 minutes west from me, and Eddie would party there with her brothers. Freaking Eddie Van Halen in my own back yard and I never knew it!! lol
I've always liked the "stray cats" Now Brian Setzer and his orchestra are phenomenal. Thanks so much for sharing.
I saw David Bowie on his last tour when he was at The Greek Theater. I went to the concession stand to get a soda and Brian Setzer was in line ahead of me. I remember standing there thinking, "Is this really happening?" It was so surreal.
I totally believe you.. I was a young kid like 12 yrs old. I went to see ABBA but not by choice. My sister was a huge fan, and it was their only U.S. tour in 1980 I think? My Mom bought 4 tickets and dropped us off. Saw the concert and it was pretty good. Anyway, after the show waiting for my Mom, I walked off from my sisters. I walked around the back of the concert hall. I saw a small crowd standing at a back door. As I walked up, the doors flew open, and some men started moving people back. I snuck under people to see, and the ladies came running out. I was in shock.. They got into a limo. Then the dudes came out walking slow through the crowd. I reached out and touched them as they walked by. It was way cool. So I totally could feel you. This video is kick ass too. Right on!
@@AjaxWarrior1979 That's cool! I live in Los Angeles and worked at Tower Records. Celebrities came in all the time. I actually met Bowie a few times. It was just so unexpected to run into Brian Setzer buying a hot dog at a David Bowie concert. I kind of prefer the happenstance of that more than all the people I met at work.
@@TheKitchenerLeslie I spilled beer on Peter Steele at an Ozzfest back in '97. I freaked out and started apologizing and he said hey don't worry about it. I already reek of wine and piss. Everyone laughed and I instantly relaxed. I got to tell them how much their music meant to me and they were all really gracious guys.
Looking back I'd bet good money Peter wasn't joking lol. Man...I miss that dude.
@@ZiddersRooFurry I don't even know who that is, but it's a great story! lol
@@ZiddersRooFurry I saw Type O Negative perform at the Ozzfest 97, Giants Stadium. They put on a good show, but their setlist was a bit short and playing in the blazing afternoon sun didn't exactly help create the proper atmosphere that this type of music requires. They were followed by Pantera, great show as well but way too short. Marilyn Manson got much more stage time for some reason.
RIP Peter, Vinnie & Dime.
It was really a kind of magical time for Rock in the 80's..............
When the Stray Cats were playing in
beginning with their look & sound even their Instruments I was feeling like They brought me back in 1955 even though I wasn’t born until 1966. Then when Eddie Van Halen came out it was like going forward in time.
Hehheh.. Wasn't that just almost visually weird? It seemed like a total 'Back to the Future' moment!

This is my life. This is my Rock and Roll!!!
Les Paul upstaging Eddie Van Halen and the worlds top players ...this is awesome!
Stanley Jordan slayed em all and never ever got a mention.
Brian did say his name.
Oh wow, that was incredible. It is sobering to realize how many have passed now.
eddie can bend them strings. rip legend.
The power that lite the world rite there ! God bless them all !
4:22 to see every guitar ego in the room go silent for B.B. King. Respect.
When Lucille speaks, ya listen. Ya know?
Bus load of the greatest guitarists ever
When egos take a backseat, and the guitar talks, its always beautiful
The Strays are definitely one of a kind.
Too many dead legends on that stage. I'm surprised how little the world was moved when Eddie vanhalen died. Rip sirs, you truly rocked the world.
I was wrecked with grief 😭😭😭😭 I STILL can’t believe he’s gone it still hurts to this day every time I hear a VH song I burst into tears 😭 when Eddie died he took my childhood with him people have NO IDEA that a guitarist like Eddie will never ever walk this earth again and I’m am so grateful I was there from the beginning to the end 😓🎸🤘🏻💯👏🏻
wow and thanks to film we'll have this for future generations to see. very cool to see how Eddie treated Les like a superstar.
That is a great observation… you can see in the way he plays he went out of his way to make it all about Les. They went on to become good friends and talk on the phone for hours according to accounts. Respect.
I remember watching this when it first aired. I recorded it on VHS. Would love to get a copy on DVD.

Kickass! This was my anniversary date with 1st wife. We saw Van Halen together tons of times.
This was awesome!
First Brian Setzer steals the show...but then Les Paul takes over at the end!!
I was watching this in amazement and thinking, how awful it is we've lost, Les Paul, B.B. King, and Waylon Jennings. Then the startling reality that Edward Van Halen is no longer with us. I remember the day he died well. I was at work. I just sat there at my computer doing nothing. But nearly two years later and I still haven't accepted that he's gone.
Anyone who plays electric guitar 🎸 playing homage to the great Les Paul.
Towers of guitars power! Spectacular!!
Ah, Stanley Jordon…that’s a name from the past! His Austin City Limit performance in the late 80’s/early 90’s is insane.
I caught Stanley play at Vanderbuilt University when I was going to MTSU. I am so glad that I was able to see him. One of the best concerts that I have attended. It was him, a bar stool, and his amps ... simple, yet amazing.
The sheer range of rock guitar talent on that stage is truly a once in a lifetime event... just WOW! This video if it hasn't already needs to be restored and preserved .
Indefinitely for generations to see gods at their finest 🎸🤘🏻💯💯💯👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
it´s crazy the way that when B.B king plays, it´s a unique moment, unique sound, style, magic. KING

Brian Setzer is criminally underrated.
How?
He might be new to you but claiming he's criminally underrated does not make sense, sorry!
Brian Setzer has been acclaimed by peers and fans for decades and featured on countless music magazines. He is a legend!
I tend to agree. To the guitar-player initiated, he is a legend. But he doesn’t enjoy the ubiquitous, ‘Guitar God’ status like some though.
@@bassmaster5387 I agree but you'd be shocked at the number of people my age that have no idea who he is..I'm in my early 50's and I didn't really start listening to him until the early 90's when he started the The Brian Setzer Orchestra..I've been hooked ever since.
Yeah a lot of people don't know who he is..I played some stray cats to a mate and he thought it was Eddie cochrane..lol
