We Bought the CHEAPEST FLY ROD At Walmart-Will It Catch Trout?

  • Опубліковано 15 жов 2024
  • In which Jon and Steve go halfsies on the Cortland Silver Stream fly rod and reel combo at Walmart just to see if they can actually catch trout on it. The total cost of the fly rod was under $40 and with the addition of some beadhead nymphs (also from Cortland) they went fishing for $45.
Technically a cheap fly rod should be capable of catching fish, but they soon find out why fly rods are typically more expensive than $50. Even so, a good time was had on the Chattahoochee River, and a good experiment with a cheap fly rod was undertaken.
Let us know in the comments below if you've ever fished with this Cortland rod or anything like it. What was your experience? Catch any fish on it?

Honestly, you can slay with cheap combos. I bought the $30 martin combo and have 10 steelhead this season (about 1 per 45minutes to hour of fishing).

yeah I caught my first brown on $40 BSA starter kit (Pflueger 5-6 really but for I'd call a solid 6 weight), mystery fly line (That broke before I caught the brown). The reel was plastic, which is fine except eventually the drag wore out (and lead to some very bad habits).
It was a great rod for small streamers on a sink tip, but fell victim to improper storage. Putting decent fly line and a reel that didn't wear out from reeling the line in was all that was needed to use it regularly. The real issue I had with it was it was 3 section and annoying to transport/find a hard case for.

@@GoodBuddyFlyFishing also having a diversified supply and turning over rocks in the shallow riffles is the easiest way to match the hatch. No hatch on, just use a worm (yarn) or leech (wooly bugger) both hold attractant well, if you're not a purist, and will produce; might not be a trout but you will not get skunked.

You can catch monstas on a zebco barbie rod. So I am sure a cheap combo fly set up would work. There is a much needed niche for less expensive beginner setups so you are not investing in a fishing technique you may not enjoy. That being said, when you start building your knowledge of fly fishing and techniques, whether nymphing, streamers or dry fly fishing the more expensive rods offer more sensitivity and feel becomes much more enjoyable to the user. Great content gentlemen

I once forgot my Fenwick Eagle on the way to my Dad’s place in Waynesville, NC. I was pissed as the Smokies are fly fishing central. He had a spare 6 wt Daiwa rod with a Martin reel. The fly line was double taper. Not my set up for sure, but I caught a lot of fish that summer. The Grey Ghost and I became friends. I took a really pretty 17” native brown on a stone fly imitation. I still have that rod and wouldn’t hesitate to use it.

The rod doesn’t matter, even when it helps. I accidentally whip my new one from time to time because I’m not used to a good setup. Sometimes the cheap ass way is the best way.

No reason why it wouldn't enable you to catch some trout proved you can cast, mend and present fairly decently. My first fly rod was a 9'6" Shakespeare 6/7-weight that was on sale for about $30 in 2009. Caught some nice fish on it. Still use it occasionally although the blank doesn't have great 'feel' so it's fairly useless for things like nymphing. Swinging wets, streamers and even occasionally dry fly fishing, all worked with it though. There is no reason really to spend hundreds on a first fly rod or even a backup. One thing I noticed though on moving here to the US from Britain was that fly fishing gear was very often in the 'exclusive' category price-wise compared to back home where much more budget-friendly options were more widely available. Not necessarily better of course but definiteley less spendy overall. Great little piece. Thanks.

Hey Jason. Woolly Buggers and y2ks are generally good producers for me. Red copper johns have been a go to as of late and squirmies work too. Steve is a big fan of the tan mop and I have been using them lately as well and they seem to work. Pats rubber legs produce well in the colder months for me but they can work all year long. The closer you get to Buford dam, try zebra midges. Jones Bridge is good spot to wade.

You don't buy a Mercedes-Benz or a BMW because it will get you their better. You buy it because it's more luxurious and fun to drive.
The same between a Walmart bought flyrod and a Sage or a Winston.

    1. John shopping at Walmart in slomo b&w is the peak of drama, the range in that guy is impressive.
    2. Up in New England, I’ve caught some beefy trout swinging a team wets the film - I bet those crayon colored things would work if you mended a bit different. I’m sure you’ll get tons of folks correcting you so I mean this in the most friendly way possible - try a swing where you mend so the belly is bending up current, the fly moves fly first downstream, and the swing / cross current movement of the fly only happens at the end of your drift, and honestly once the fly moves the most unnaturally the fish hits. Go figure! Try wets!

I've caught some of my best bass and trout on cheapo Wal*mart combo units. Of course, that was trolling, when your rod quality is at its least importance. I bought a Silver Stream fly rod tonight at WalMart because I saw a fly fisherman catch 4 trout right in front of my beach on the lake where I live. I have been trolling this lake for the last 2 weeks without catching anything. I haven't been fly fishing in 23 years. After 23 years, tomorrow morning I return to fly fishing with a Wal*Mart combo and Wal*Mart flies. Wish me luck. We need to break this awful streak ASAP. :P
I was so angry at that fly fisherman. Right in front of my beach. What a jerk. It was like he was mocking me. We're gonna show him. I'll catch trout soon with my Wal*Mart rod and that will mock him with his fancy rod. Yeah, he caught trout while standing 5' from my property, but I'll catch trout with equipment that cost 1/5 the price of his. HERE WE GO
YES IM DRUNK ITS BEEN A LONG TWO WEEKS
    actually its been three

@@GoodBuddyFlyFishing UPDATE: I caught 12 brookies and rainbows over the last 2 days ...on the Swedish Pimple and various spoons! I tried using the Wal*mart fly rod ... I was terrible at it. I don't know if it was me or the rod. (Maybe both?) ... but anyway, terrible streak has been smashed with the best trout fishing I've ever had. I still plan to get into fly fishing, but maybe I'll start with better gear. I think cheap gear may be best for people who are already good at it. I have a lot of practicing to do and can use the help of better gear.

A good fly on a cheap rod in the hands of a good fisherman will catch more fish than a bad fly on an expensive rod in the hands of a bad fisherman.

  • @ArcticFlies56

Just goes to show that the amount of money you pay for the rod doesn't mean anything. It's the fly that the fish want not the rod.
The question is, how do you feel about spending the hundreds or thousands of dollars you paid for that very expensive fly fishing rod? You can have just as much fun with a cheap rod. You can talk yourself in to any purchase you want to make. Oh yea, nice trout.

I bought my first fly rod about 6 yrs ago and it was $24.99 and it came with line, a leader and a couple flies from Academy. I bought some tippet and ordered a few more flies online and started catching bream out of the small city lake in my hometown. Now I’ve upgraded rod and reel I’m tying my own flies and caught 12 rainbows in southeast Oklahoma 2 days ago.

Fly fishing is more than nymphing. Casting accuracy and presentation are major factors in dry fly fishing. It is here that the difference in rods becomes noticeable. But this video was extremely entertaining.

Honestly it’s not the equipment that is lacking it is you if you cannot get the piece of equipment to work the equipment is merely the instrument you yourself are the composer so if you do not compose really well you will not produce I’ve seen guys take $10 poles and catch millions of fish I’ve seen guys take $100 pools to $500 rig ups and catch no fish just saying I’m sure you probably know this and you’re only saying what you’re saying for the video but for those of you who don’t know this I am saying it
