I lived in a small village in the Catskills for a couple of years right in the middle of Lovecraft country and most of the old timers as well as rural locals who didn’t venture far from home had this or a lighter version of it.

Prose and Poetry for 7yrs, 6th-12th grade..I always did Prose, read and acted out stories..it was my passion and I won quite a few awards..I thouroghly enjoyed your reading, presentation and overall projection of the entire video! Literally from beginning to end =) I did various works from King, Bradbury Eudora Welty, (it's a long list) but I didn't get familiar with HP Lovecraft til later in life..I would have definitely *LuVd* doing some of his works, if I had..I realize you get a ton of comments so I have no idea if you'll see this *BUT* A) I hope I can donate in the near future B) What's your favorite story and reading? 💜 Awesome job 💜
This guy has the perfect voice for lovecraft especially with the long winded rambles that are so common. Mixed with the amazing sound effects this is probably one of my favorite audiobooks on UA-cam

my biggest complaint is the ultra cringey "dark" voice at the beginning... it was so bad I almost didn't bother listen to the rest. The main narrator is really good. The supporting voice actors aren't nearly as strong. Some of the audio work is obnoxious and distracting. Audio quality is definitely 10/10. Still for a free audio book, this one is pretty darn good! (But I wouldn't say perfect.)
Lovecraftian horror is wonderfully dark and terrifying. You did an excellent job narrating this and the sound effects really brought it to a different level. Well done!
I can't be the only one who thinks this would be a great horror film if it were ever to be adapted. Del Toro directing, Doug Jones as Wilbur, possibly Charlie Hunnam in a lead of some sort? I'm just spit-balling here. Finger's crossed! Also, this is perhaps one of the best Lovecraftian narration's on UA-cam. Seriously everything is on point in this one. IKR? The problem is that if you're gonna adapt anything Lovecraft you need to market it just right, and make the film itself more about the unknown than just about monsters, something I think both studios and audiences might not understand.
Conor Doyle there is a movie from 1970 starring Dean Stockwell and Sandra Dee. It was on Netflix for a while a few years back. The movie took A LOT of liberties with the story. But, overall it was good considering the time in which it was made. There was another version from 2009 but it was terrible. I hope it helps. Lovcraft for life!
Dunwich actually exists in the UK on the Suffolk coast.It was the capital of the Kingdom of East Angles. In the 13th century most of it sank beneath the waves and on a particular tide (probably on a moonlit night) you can here the sound of the church bells tolling from the deep.
+Katie Millard Towns in the New England region were often named their counterparts in England. Cambridge, Norwich, Oxford, and Coventry are all towns in Connecticut or Massachusetts. I can see why Lovecraft would name the fictional town for a real one across the pond.
Not only that, but the place Dunwich is described happens to be very close to a real (now long-drowned) Massachusetts town, Greenwich. Honestly I still get the names mixed up at times.
This is just the best damn horror story ever, and the last line is a kicker! It is rumored by some who profess to know that this will be director Richard Stanley's next Lovecraft adaptation. I thought he did a fantastic job with "Color Out Of Space!" Not only was it beautifully shot and believably acted, how often to you get to see Nicholas Cage milking a llama? Lovecraft was a racist snob, but a Black writer friend of mine absolutely loves his way with words and his style. Nobody else can create such a mood of brooding dread, or things unseen, or things you wish you could forget having seen!
Loved it! I'm so amazed not only by Lovercraft's imagination but by his writing style. He perfectly manages to capture his sceptic view on human pride and our common belief of superiority when it comes to finding the truth about existence and about life. The thing is, we are no more than another species of animals in a small planet of a never-ending universe we were never meant to understand. He was able to see this even during his time, and express his criticism of anthropocentrism and humanism through his horror books- Indeed, there are many things we shall never understand. Thanks for sharing!
I wouldn't be surprised if some real-life cosmic horror existed and the secret organizations both in mainstream and occult history have fought like mad men to keep it covered up.
Erin Encarnacion I love HP Lovecraft's work, Cthulhu being my favorite creature......this particular type of horror really grabs your inner fears and growls it in your ear to keep you up at night so that not even a nightlight would keep the monsters in the dark away......perfect for quiet or stormy nights that need a little bit of fear to make your heart skip a beat......... 👻👻👻
By far the best audio version I heard. And believe me, I heard all there is available . From David McCallum to Wayne June , FNH and Classic Tales Podcast. And then there is Will Hart who has read some great tales as well. But this is the best Dunwich version I have heard. The Backwards dialect sounds more convincing, the background sounds are soft and not distracting. Chapeau to this atmospheric performance, and all the best from Holland.
The greatest horror audio I have ever heard. I’ve been listening to this for at least five years. I’ve heard it at least 20 times. Such a brilliant work of art. This audio recording is as great as you a masterpiece movie, or music album. Brilliant, so great, thank you
I have read this story probably 10 times in the last 25 years. I own a couple of CD audio books of the story as well. You would think that -- the nearly infinite amount of literature I still have not taken the time to read yet and will never finish before I perish -- that enough is enough and I should move on, and I might have agreed. But then I found this audio product by chance and through old habit began to listen, expecting to only spend a few minutes then go do something else. Yet here I am, two hours later, not having been able for one second to tear myself away from this (truly) spectacular presentation of one of Lovecraft's best tales. Firstly, of course, is the work itself and Lovecraft's ability to paint unique images with his flowery, archaic, and convoluted language. In this recording of his work, with the subtle and overt sound effects accompanying the narrator's voice, the story (which I have often envisioned when reading) came much more vividly to life and it was both fascinating and compelling despite my long-time familiarity. As for the reader, Caden Vaughn Clegg, kudos. It is often hard to find a storyteller with the quality of voice and enunciation that makes listening to an extended narration such a pleasant (and gladly repeatable) experience. I shall look for more of your work. To the team that produced this audio book, you should be proud -- it is a job very well done.
My favorite part was the sound byte for Yog-Sothoth. Every time his name is mentioned, there's that booming, deep, demonic echo, and it kicked ass. I'm sure you've heard it many times, but I say again, well done.
Why don't the audiobook companies look on UA-cam for narration? I would love to hear you do a modern horror book and on top of that get paid for it professionally. Everything I hear from you is gold. Especially stories like this that are incredibly difficult reads.
The sound production and voice narration on this particular piece is out of this world. I would definitely buy a subscription to Chilling tales if I knew there were many Lovecraft productions of this caliber

The narration and sound design here of The Dunwich Horror are super effective at boosting the story's already jitter-inducing atmosphere. Caden Clegg, the dark, smooth timbre of your voice and your characterizations are phenomenal. Jesse Cornett, the music and the incessant whip-poor-will calls gave me shivers. I've begun researching those soul snatchers.
Man, never in my life I was so glad that I couldn't find good version of audiobook in my native language and had to go and search for English version, even thoughit would be a bit harder for me to listen. Now I'm glad I didn't find it in Russian because I found this gem. The way you did it is absolutely perfect, especially after what I've seen out there while I was searching for it. I'm a native Russian speaker, and over the years I've learned English all by myself. I tried to find this audiobook in Russian, but every damn time the execution was just atrocious. Every f***ing time it's some lisping, stuttering school kid with unpleasant voice using a bucket instead of a microphone. Or this other dude that just uses voice bots to read the text and inserts loud *spooky* music in the background that plays *through the whole thing* Yeah, it's *that* bad. So yeah, that's another reason why I had so much fun listening to your version.

I could tell right away the the accents sounded more southern than should have. other then that one slip, superior story telling right here. and of course exceptional story from HP. this was one of the best stories Iv heard in a while. such a good job. keep it up.
My favorite line from this story, narrated really well here, was always: "The wind gibbers with Their voices, and the earth mutters with Their consciousness. They bend the forest and crush the city, yet may not forest or city behold the hand that smites. Kadath in the cold waste hath known Them, and what man knows Kadath?"
this is my 2nd time listening to this story. The sound play is absolutely amazing, Love the entitis sound. The narrators voice, so good... I would do anything he told me to, It's fantastic.
Once you start reading this stuff, you start to see it all across horror and sci-fi. He was such an inspiration, it's a shame he doesn't get the credit he deserves.

Wow...that was a great narration of a Lovecraft classic! The sound design especially with the voice of the Horror itself towards the end made this even better! It's probably one of the few Lovecraft novels that comes remotely close to a "happy" ending, but even then a victory over these forces will take its undeniable toll on the human mind. Great work!
The fantastically alien description of Wilbur’s grotesque, bizarre anatomy in his final moments, the stuff still makes me squeamish and uneasy. Howard was quite a wordsmith in his time.
Yeah, that coarse, crinkly black hair, that crocodilian, reticulated, squamous hide, those saurian feet, those ropey tentacles with red sucking glips, those eyes on his hips, his goatish face, his yellowish skin, good God.
I've heard various readings of this and they've all been good. And I read this a long time ago also. It is often difficult to dramatize something like this, but this rendition is outstanding. The narration is perfectly stark and level, and the voice acting for the characters is likewise perfect. Based on just that, this gets 10/10. But the sound effects and especially the sounds of the monster at the end before it is destroyed...those qualities put this right off the scale. Better than I could have imagined. Bravo.
been reading Lovecraft for years. living and born in NewEngland, it makes it an always great read. A local hero and icon in a way. And reading in summer/fall in our 200/300+ year old cemeteries is an experience onto itself. Chelmsford, MA. Forefathers Burial Ground (1655) is a good one outside of Salem(MA. & NH). Haverhill, MA.;(Arkham maybe?) has a few good burial grounds too. Awesome audio book guys! narrator makes/creates it an amazing listen and atmos-fear!
This is the only version of the Dunwich Horror that I ever want to listen to. Anything else just seems dull. The production value is fantastic! Thank you
This is one of the stories that inspired the creation of the fishing hemlet location in Bloodborne. And boy is the lore of the location close to this story. This wasn't the only one. "The call of Cthulhu" and "The shunned house" gave some inspiration to some ideas in the game. For example, there is a giant Cthulhu monster in the city that is invisible. You can only see it if your character have high enough insight/knowledge. It's similar to the stunned house when there is an invisible monster that can only be seen with some special dust. There is another story of Lovecraft where a man is travelling in his dreams. It like in Bloodborne where you're hunting in a nightmare but at the same time you're supposedly in the waking world, the real world. It can it confusing at first. They also having some ideas inspired by the anime "Berserk".

There are actually 2 movie adaptions to this book. One in 1970 and one in 2009.

The greatest horror audio I have ever heard.
I’ve been listening to this for at least five years. I’ve heard it at least 20 times. Such a brilliant work of art.
This audio recording is as great as you a masterpiece movie, or music album.

I have read this story probably 10 times in the last 25 years. I own a couple of CD audio books of the story as well. You would think that -- the nearly infinite amount of literature I still have not taken the time to read yet and will never finish before I perish -- that enough is enough and I should move on, and I might have agreed. But then I found this audio product by chance and through old habit began to listen, expecting to only spend a few minutes then go do something else. Yet here I am, two hours later, not having been able for one second to tear myself away from this (truly) spectacular presentation of one of Lovecraft's best tales.
Firstly, of course, is the work itself and Lovecraft's ability to paint unique images with his flowery, archaic, and convoluted language. In this recording of his work, with the subtle and overt sound effects accompanying the narrator's voice, the story (which I have often envisioned when reading) came much more vividly to life and it was both fascinating and compelling despite my long-time familiarity.
As for the reader, Caden Vaughn Clegg, kudos. It is often hard to find a storyteller with the quality of voice and enunciation that makes listening to an extended narration such a pleasant (and gladly repeatable) experience. I shall look for more of your work. To the team that produced this audio book, you should be proud -- it is a job very well done.
Perfect match of text and narrator. And production. It doesn't get any better than this.
My second-favorite Lovecraft story, right behind "The Shadow Over Innsmouth".
I’ve never read him before, though I love great horror, Poe, Barker, King and more. This one is epic.
Color Out of Space is also very enjoyable.

Innsmouth was great. It was the first Lovecraft story I read, and is still among my favorites.
I made a comment about this. It'd be cool if they did a combined reading of dagon and the shadow over insmouth to make it longer.
This audiobook is awesome, the ambient music and sound effects are great and the narrator is the best I've heard. 10/10.
My favorite part was the sound byte for Yog-Sothoth. Every time his name is mentioned, there's that booming, deep, demonic echo, and it kicked ass. I'm sure you've heard it many times, but I say again, well done.

The sound production and voice narration on this particular piece is out of this world. I would definitely buy a subscription to Chilling tales if I knew there were many Lovecraft productions of this caliber

The narration and sound design here of The Dunwich Horror are super effective at boosting the story's already jitter-inducing atmosphere. Caden Clegg, the dark, smooth timbre of your voice and your characterizations are phenomenal. Jesse Cornett, the music and the incessant whip-poor-will calls gave me shivers. I've begun researching those soul snatchers.
I enjoy this story a lot. So fascinating. The descriptions, the setup, and execution. The narration in this video tops it off.
This presentation is just S++ years later. The voices are perfect, the writing oozes atmosphere and the language harkens back to a more civilized age

Man, never in my life I was so glad that I couldn't find good version of audiobook in my native language and had to go and search for English version, even thoughit would be a bit harder for me to listen. Now I'm glad I didn't find it in Russian because I found this gem. The way you did it is absolutely perfect, especially after what I've seen out there while I was searching for it.
I'm a native Russian speaker, and over the years I've learned English all by myself. I tried to find this audiobook in Russian, but every damn time the execution was just atrocious. Every f***ing time it's some lisping, stuttering school kid with unpleasant voice using a bucket instead of a microphone. Or this other dude that just uses voice bots to read the text and inserts loud *spooky* music in the background that plays *through the whole thing*
Yeah, it's *that* bad.
So yeah, that's another reason why I had so much fun listening to your version.

I could tell right away the the accents sounded more southern than should have. other then that one slip, superior story telling right here. and of course exceptional story from HP. this was one of the best stories Iv heard in a while. such a good job. keep it up.
to me it sounds more like an Appalachia accent, which I suppose helps me imagine the scene better. but I agree with you still on all points.
My favorite line from this story, narrated really well here, was always: "The wind gibbers with Their voices, and the earth mutters with Their consciousness. They bend the forest and crush the city, yet may not forest or city behold the hand that smites. Kadath in the cold waste hath known Them, and what man knows Kadath?"
this is my 2nd time listening to this story. The sound play is absolutely amazing, Love the entitis sound. The narrators voice, so good... I would do anything he told me to, It's fantastic.
This is the first H.P. Lovecraft story I’ve ever heard and it is amazingly good.
Once you start reading this stuff, you start to see it all across horror and sci-fi. He was such an inspiration, it's a shame he doesn't get the credit he deserves.

Wow...that was a great narration of a Lovecraft classic! The sound design especially with the voice of the Horror itself towards the end made this even better! It's probably one of the few Lovecraft novels that comes remotely close to a "happy" ending, but even then a victory over these forces will take its undeniable toll on the human mind. Great work!

The fantastically alien description of Wilbur’s grotesque, bizarre anatomy in his final moments, the stuff still makes me squeamish and uneasy.
Howard was quite a wordsmith in his time.

Yeah, that coarse, crinkly black hair, that crocodilian, reticulated, squamous hide, those saurian feet, those ropey tentacles with red sucking glips, those eyes on his hips, his goatish face, his yellowish skin, good God.
The music that accompanies the spoken words is amazing and really makes this reading stand out.
I'm glad we are finally getting some H.P. Lovecraft stories adapted into films. Cosmic horror is hard to adapt into film.
I’m not sure why, but I keep trying match Wilbur and Dr Armitage dialogues, along with the Necronomicon passage. It’s just very satisfying.
I've heard various readings of this and they've all been good. And I read this a long time ago also. It is often difficult to dramatize something like this, but this rendition is outstanding. The narration is perfectly stark and level, and the voice acting for the characters is likewise perfect. Based on just that, this gets 10/10. But the sound effects and especially the sounds of the monster at the end before it is destroyed...those qualities put this right off the scale. Better than I could have imagined. Bravo.
Please do more of these. The quality of these recordings is amazing and the Chilling Tales team does an insane job with Lovecraft stories.
I hope they read dagon and the shadow over insmouth in the same cinematic style.

Great Narration. This story is a classic.
been reading Lovecraft for years. living and born in NewEngland, it makes it an always great read. A local hero and icon in a way. And reading in summer/fall in our 200/300+ year old cemeteries is an experience onto itself. Chelmsford, MA. Forefathers Burial Ground (1655) is a good one outside of Salem(MA. & NH). Haverhill, MA.;(Arkham maybe?) has a few good burial grounds too. Awesome audio book guys! narrator makes/creates it an amazing listen and atmos-fear!
I collect each different reading of Lovecraft and with each different reading it is as almost another story being told.
This is the only version of the Dunwich Horror that I ever want to listen to. Anything else just seems dull. The production value is fantastic! Thank you
This is one of the stories that inspired the creation of the fishing hemlet location in Bloodborne. And boy is the lore of the location close to this story. This wasn't the only one. "The call of Cthulhu" and "The shunned house" gave some inspiration to some ideas in the game. For example, there is a giant Cthulhu monster in the city that is invisible. You can only see it if your character have high enough insight/knowledge. It's similar to the stunned house when there is an invisible monster that can only be seen with some special dust.
There is another story of Lovecraft where a man is travelling in his dreams. It like in Bloodborne where you're hunting in a nightmare but at the same time you're supposedly in the waking world, the real world. It can it confusing at first. They also having some ideas inspired by the anime "Berserk".
