I'm French-Canadian from a French ancestor (back in the 17th century) I approve this joke!👌 (No hard feeling, i love my French cousins!)

I'll never forget when I was 21, I went to barnes and noble and found one of the b&n classic hardcover books for $5 with really weird and disturbing art on the inside cover, titled "The Complete Works of H.P. Lovecraft".
I decided to buy it and began reading it that night with this very story. Roughly 15-20 minutes into reading it, and the power went out. I've never been so scared. Thus, I was a Lovecraft fan for life.

He had a great imagination and some of the most creative lore. Most agree he's the father of the cosmic-horror genre.
Got to remember he was educated very conservatively in the late 1890s and dementia killed his father when he was 3 so, most likely, also had some mental health issue who might explain the racist subtext in several stories.
(bonus fact: he wrote his first story called "The little glass bottle" around the age of 6-7 (depending you ask, it's unclear what date it was) His first published fiction "The Alchemist" was much later tho)
Edit: Oops, meant to have that as my main comment, not as a reply...

10:20 all of these descriptions lead me to believe that what they thought was ‘white fungus that appeared on rainy summer nights’ and the ‘cloudy white pattern’ aren’t fungi at all, but efflorescence, the deposits of salt after it rains.
Moisture is present to make the salt become a soluble solution.
As salts move to the material’s surface, the moisture evaporates. This makes the salts crystallize, which results in efflorescence.
This tends to occur most in humid environments, like basements or wouldn’t you know, cellars.

A lot of lovecraft's stories are strange more than they are creepy. But this one has a very definitive eerie feeling to it. It's never a grand mystery, nor was I ever horrified, but it often had me feeling... watched. And so while I think his grander works of cosmic horror are still my favorites of his, I think this one so far is the one I find the best crafted... And just to be safe, I shall now watch something cheerful for a bit before going to bed.

I think this is why people like me like SCPs so much. A short story about some, at first, unknowable thing that slowly the reader learns about, but never fully grasps the things place. It's better this way because then, if you know how everything truly works, there's no room for the weird and fantastical. Everything has to fit into the cannon. Where as the Lovecraft mythos is supposed to be unknowable. You can always mix in real mythology (rougarou) or make it up like the writers who expanded Lovecraft's universe. Anyways, thanks as always Exploring!

(9:30) Interesting to hear HPL reference toad stools and “ Indian pipe” ..or Ghost Pipe (Monotropa uniflora) . It’s a white, ( sometimes blood red or even red and white striped) hook shaped, uncommon tree parasite that pop up like mutant candy canes in the darkest forest. It has unknown psychoactive effects. Not a fungus or a photosynthesizing plant, its appearance is bizarre and rare. Quite a descriptor.
