I remember my dad singing this (rather poorly) as a child. Love this version.

But I bet his voice sounded wonderful to you nonetheless! My mom used to sing me Irish songs before I slept. In my memory her voice is always beautiful. And my dad used to read me books, like the James Herriott series, and make up stories for me. It led me to loving books, animals and using my imagination. Our fathers and mothers can give us the best gifts. I lost my daddy in 2014 to Parkinson's. I miss him so much, but I have so many treasured memories.

the actor you were thinking of was Michael Clarke Duncan. Phenomenal actor!

I can’t believe it’s been 12 years since he passed it doesn’t feel that long. He was a great actor and I loved his regular appearances on The late show with Craig Ferguson.

I am old, so I knew this one well. I love story telling folk songs. This doesn't hit number 1 for me, but that's because I like other of his work better, not because this one isn't great! Glad you are feeling better!

This was one of the songs I requested for Geoff to sing.
I don't assume that he did it just because I asked, but I was so delighted when he did it.

I've always pictured Big John as one of the gentle giants who cares more about others and is considered a protector.
    Thanks for the reaction 😊

This is one of my favorites of Geoff's! It seems like a difficult song to do well because for the most part the main voice is just speaking on a note, so it seems like it could just drone but he manages to make it sound interesting!

Sure, I remember hearing it on TV sometime, as a kid. 'Very memorable because it had a sad ending. We "older" folks remember a LOT of stuff.

My dad had the stereo and Jimmy Dean's album which I'd listen to it in the afternoon. Geoff did it justice! So did you!

I grew up listening to this when I was in grade school. Grabbed my attention every time it came on then, and still does. Love story-songs! And, of course, Geoff.

Visually, this is incredible. When the light changes to blue, and Geoff's talking about John's demise, it's SO epic and chilling and beautiful.
Also, I wonder if Geoff has four-five seperate closets for each of the Geoffettes!

After we fell in love with his cover of Sixteen Tons. We fans begged for a year. Even his mom and mother-in-law nagged him for this one. Back in the 60s I remember Jimmy Dean singing it on his TV show. Yes the sausage guy. They made a movie out of the song staring Clint Walker. Geoff barrowed those tools again from his dad.

It took me a while to warm up to this song, but now I absolutely love it!

My parents loved this song & I knew it growing up even though it came out nearly a decade before I was born. They made a movie based on the song which starred Ned Beatty & Jack Elam (I think). The original version by Jimmy Dean was great, but I really liked the changes Geoff made, too.
