When Jimmy Dean first recorded the song, one line had to be changed. When you were a kid, the last line was, "At the bottom of the mine lies a big, big man, Big Bad John." Originally that line was "At the bottom of the mine lies one Hell of a man, Big, Bad John." Did you know that Jimmy Dean recorded a sequel to "Big Bad John? It's titled "The Cajun Queen", about Big John's lady coming to rescue him. Give it a listen. Psst! I'm 72 and listened to Jimmy Dean, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Roger Miller and even Red Sovine.
And Good Sir, I'm 20 yrs yer junior, well 16 really but : )... I know these gents and some of their musics; the 70's I must say, I was stuck on Roger Miller (had one record and I knew every song). Probably 1 45 of each of the others, then had 8-tracks and later cassettes. Country's my jam ... classic that is! : ) LOL -- "Name That Tune", I can of many many (and nearly the year!) Be Safe
I heard this and 16 Tons all of my childhood. During the depression my grandparents lost their farm and my dad and my grandfather went and worked the coal mines. And they both survived but not everybody that they worked with did. Between the dangers of the minds and the outright thievery of the company stores, those men and their families lead very very difficult lives. And with all that sadness I still love these songs. He is not only an exceptional vocalist but a great storyteller. He does narrations on his channel but a lot of them are like Edgar Allen Poe and I just can’t listen to them before bedtime. And he’s got the perfect voice for a nice bedtime story.😠
Story of a big man with an even bigger heart. One of the great storytellers of the past was Johnny Horton who my mom and dad played when I was very young Now my sons 30 and 28 have his stuff on their playlists. Good music NEVER goes out of style I am so glad these guys with their covers can bring it to new generations ❣❣❣❣#jeffcastellucci #voiceplay #lowbass #bigbadjohn #redheadedneighbor #bestreactor
Wow that brought back some memories! I haven't heard this since I was a little kid in the 70's. 😊 I think it must have been on a country greatest hits album my parents had.
Glad you enjoyed Geoff's video! He's not only a really good singer, but quite a storyteller as well. He's even got a number of short stories and poems on his website that he narrates, and the few I've listened to have been really well done! I'm going to recommend one of his videos that doesn't seem to get the attention I think it deserves - Till Then. It's a song that originated in WW2, and Geoff did it without having it recommended to him by any of his patrons - he just likes the song that much! Plus, there's an interesting story about the piano he plays in it - I'll be happy to tell you if you react to the video!
@Badger77722 I totally agree. That song ALWAYS brings some tears to my eyes, and they're not from sadness, it just touches something very deep in my soul... As does this song. Maybe I'm using the word in a weird way, but... Both of these songs talk to me of something I call "integrity". Different sides of it, maybe, but I'm not so sure. 🙂 And of course I second your suggestion 100%! :)
I do love story telling folk songs. He also did 16 Tons, also a miners story. Voiceplay did another one, originally sung about 400 years ago, Whiskey in the Jar.
That slight gasp after ‘there was only one left (gasp) down there to save’. It makes me shiver every time, thinking on these miners, probably friends and buddies of another, in their fight to get up, just unconsciously forgetting for a minute the one who has no close friends there, and then realising we got to get our hero. And then the rumble…
The song was written by the original singer named, Jimmy Dean (No relation to James). He wrote it back in 1960. In an interview he said that it was based on a story his uncle told him about a Big Black Man he worked with in the mines in the 1930's.
Oh, this one made me cry when I was a kid. I'd forgotten about it. Outstanding cover! More story songs: Vincent (lyric version) - Don McLean; The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot, The Legend of Billie Joe - Bobbi Gentry; Me & Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin. Agree with another commenter's suggestion of Prejudice from Tim Minchin! Thanks.
thank you so much young lady for your fine reaction to this timeless classic! i very much appreciate it!!....you have a kind and sweet way about you when you speak! whats more you display a refreshing natural femininity and grace in the process!!!...(not to mention the fact that you are strikingly lovely as well lol!!!!)...thank you once again! Take care and "keep em coming!!
You are having entirely too much fun! Well you've seen 2 of the 3 favorite classics. Only one left is Ghost Riders. Thank you Red! You make our days a bit brighter.
Thanks for your reaction! I agree with the other comments about his other story telling songs that you would like- "16 Tons"(also a mining story) and "Ghost Riders In The Sky".
@@redheadedneighbor This is one of Elvis' lesser known songs. When he performed it, one of his backup singers had to take it down into bass range. Geoff, as you know, has no problem going WAAAAAAAAY down...and then all the way up into alto range!
Holy SH!T. Got the nostalgia feels from that one! The bass singers kinda fascinate me. Every bit as impressive as the women who can sing in the whistle register. There seems to varying reports on the inter webs of how low Geoff can actually go, some reporting B0, others at C1 to E1. His highest note seems to be pegged at A5 with the annotation of that assessment doesn’t include falsetto. Whichever is accurate that’s still a damn impressive range.
Geoff fan and Voiceplayer here. I hope I’m not out of line answering this. Some of those videos are older and Geoff has hit some record lows recently. That said there are technically three answers. Some consider it to be an A0 from Enemy where he briefly hit the note using growl technique. But because the note was so brief others consider the B0s in Halo and Valhalla calling to be his lowest sustained notes. Excluding extended techniques like growl and Subharmonic, Geoff’s lowest chest note is F1 in Whiskey in the Jar.
I think you should react to the band Nightwish at Wacken in 2013 . All the songs they performed that evening before 82K folk were good but Ghost Love Score would be a good song to start. Their frontwoman is an amazing singer with a VERY broad range of pitch and styles on display.
If you like good story telling take a listen to a " song " from 1967 by Red Sovine called Phantom 309 which was inspired by a similar situation that happened in 1963. I spend hours a day watching reactors and have never seen anyone react to this. Keep up the great reactions.
I remember Jimmy Dean singing that back in the day. He even did a sequel to it. Personally though I prefer his cover of Tennessee Ernie Ford's 16 Ton and Ghost Riders in the Sky. Also his cover of The Headless Horseman is great fun. But it is hard to beat those originals.
Red - Variety? Rut? How far out of that rut would you like to get? Ever heard the medieval instrument called a hurdy gurdy? No? Then, Patty Gurdy's cover ( ua-cam.com/video/HH3va5j9RIM/v-deo.html ) of Ed Sheeran's 2021 hit "Bad Habits" will be an eye-opener! If you watch the first 10 seconds of this video, you'll want to do a full reaction. 🙂
@@redheadedneighbor OK...insufficiently ancient instrumentation. Duly noted. Although amped up a bit, the instrument used by The Harp Twins for their amazing version ( ua-cam.com/video/KigLXLJMZJk/v-deo.html ) of Billy Idol's "Dancing With Myself" is an updated model of the instrument King David used circa 1000 B.C. to lay down the audio track for the Psalms. Sooo....is "harp rock" already inside your rut, or something new? (BTW, these young ladies have 3/4 million subs and almost 200 videos on their YT channel.)
Geoff is a great bass singer and I really like his solo work as well as his Acapella group VoicePlay, but there’s one singer that blows him into the weeds, Tim Storms - he holds the Guiness book of records title for the lowest male voice! Feast your ears on this and thank me later 😂. ua-cam.com/video/xtAltg0ZIrY/v-deo.htmlsi=tKLdm93TVFNwIbuU Nice reaction 😊
