The Best Bolivian Food In NYC Is Served In A Subway

- Underneath the 8th Avenue side of the Columbus Circle subway station lives an underground food hall known as Turnstyle. Bolivian Llama Party’s location in Turnstyle may be overlooked by the average commuter. But for any determined New Yorker, Bolivian Llama Party’s salteñas and chola sandwiches are well worth the hunt.
Sometimes called Bolivian soup dumplings, salteñas are best enjoyed by biting off the tip and slurping up all the delicious filling through the gap. We made the trek to Bolivian Llama Party via the subway to try out three kinds of salteñas and the best-selling chola Bolivian Llama Party offers. We talked to the three-brother team behind the restaurant about what it's like to run a restaurant inside of a subway station.

The Best Bolivian Food In NYC Is Served In A Subway
Is it just me or is Llama Party the best name?!
Hell nah Llama Party's the best name
A name like that can only belong to a restaurant or an indie folk band.
yeah I want to steal it
Bolivian adds so much to it, makes it sound like a dirty steamy orgy
Passion for food Llama is a peruvian animal tho
I'm half Bolivian and been there multiple times, everytime I'm there I have to have salteñas. This host didn't eat anything from it, they are SO freaking delicious. What's really delicious too is sopa de maní 😋😋
Been to that station many times and never stopped there. I should go the next time I'm there for their salteñas
Avery The Cuban-American I think I see your comments every video I see😂😂
Why are you on every UA-cam comment section???
Lucky Lucian that’s what I’m saying😂😂
@@Blaziken36 because they are subscribed to the most popular UA-cam channels and have video notifications on. Once a new video comes out, they immediately comment on it and then all they have to do is wait. That is how they are everywhere.
Salta es una provincia argentina 🇦🇷....y las empanadas no son como las q muestra el vídeo.....que programa burro no puede decir q salta es en Bolivia 😠
I'm from Bolivia and Salteñas are the best food! we eat them in the morning like a breakfast.
the tradition is to go out with your friends or family and go to the restauran and buy Salteñas! also they become a meme here bc for every single fathers day the gift is a salteña (and for mothers day the gift is a fancy meal lol) I remeber for student day all classmates give money to buy salteñas and delivered to the school :) good times! (sorry for my English)
Bolivia was one of my two favorite countries in South America when I did a year of travel there. The people are so nice and the landscape is impressive. When I remember that time, I always return to the amazing-ness of Bolivia.
we hope you get a chance to come back!
Thanks my brother ❤💛💚
We will be welcoming you
Why thank you so much you are welcome to our nation anytime.
Did you come to Santa Cruz? And thanks dude we chill f
As a Peruvian I can confirm that Bolivian empanada's (salteña) is the best one in S. America.
Salteñas are not empanadas. We actually have empandas en Bolivia. Empanadas are more like baked dumplings not empanadas.
i love how she got all that information from a tiny bite from the sandwich lol. you cant even see where she took a bite.
jeff lopez lol you’re right! That was some unrealistic statement.
Never trust a skinny..... reviewer. Hahaha
@@penepatitenor hahahaha
representing Bolivia!!!! We hope everyone gets to come to Bolivia at least once!
Those saltenas would've pissed me off if no one told me the correct way to eat it.
Same
What I do is make a hole at the top, eat the insides. Then eat the bread.
They are called salteñas #ProudToBe🇧🇴
@@edusar1175 there's no "ñ" in English, only in Spanish. The most similar would be "Saltenia"

“Bolivian restaurant is hard to come by in New York”
That’s because there barely any Bolivians in New York
Most of bolivians population is in DC area where I live. We have shit loads of resturants here. And the food is amazing.
There arent bolivians there because 1st of all for us its expensive to go to the usa pet person u have to pay a 500$visa only to go half a year and the plane trip costs 250$per person
They Mostly live DC and Providence.
@iiMrGameOnii get your self righteous ass off your damn horse 🐎 brah
Tadashi Okazaki First of all who are you to say Bolivian food isn’t good? A lot of the worlds food is originated from Bolivia including potatoes which is something I’m sure you eat pretty frequently. We have one of the best cuisines but that’s obviously an opinion. If you have nothing good to say keep it yourself.
I am from Bolivia and salteñas are very delicious here, besides we have many others deilcious dishes, wich is made with pork, chiken, llama, lamb, our gastronomy is amazing!!
Do you know what I was thinking about I was actually thinking of the sandwich subway
Me also
Oh no
Just some random subway restaurant decided to start making Bolivian food hahaha
🇧🇴🇧🇴🇧🇴 Afro-Bolivian here !
🇧🇴 are beautiful people 🙋🏽♀️
Thank you it's such a traditional dish one of my favorites from home.
You can tell that salteñas is their specialty. That bro doesn't used any measuring tools in kneading that dough. Talking about a true masterchef at heart.
Lies again? Curry Puff
David Oropeza struck me as a very intelligent guy from the moment he started speaking at 0:23
You can tell that him and his brothers really know what they are doing and apply a meticulous, almost scientific method to their cooking. I want to go try it now
Glad to see me fellow compatriots making it big somewhere else. Brings me pride! They’re out here making our country and culture look good!!
Given all the love and care that goes into making these gorgeous salteña pasties, I would savor each bite...and not let a single drop of filling hit the plate.
Saltenas are the best!!!! I have wonderful memories of them with my grandma. Every-time I went to Bolivia she will take me to cafe that just sells Saltenas. 😊I really miss her. And now my mom is starting to make them-she is hoping to start a business here in LA. I hope it goes well.
I live in NYC and I love to find the best spots to showcase on my channel.I'll have to find this place now. Looks so good
if you come to Bolivia hit me up!
I love food insider they provide me and my mom so much info now shes decied that we need to go to NYC lol
The Dumb Doodler I wish my mom was like that
But they sometime just take pictures from instagarm
...and ask you to drive her all the way from the west coast
I am from chicago, new york is hella fun. its so dirty but magical, graffiti everywhere and street art, the buildings are old and grimy but it feels so modern and chic at the same time, roof top gardens everywhere in greenwich village, everyone is out at all hours and you can literally find a shit ton to do at any hour of the night. the older subway systems are hot as hell and smell like pee but the old tile and the murals and steel beams make riding them so cool. theres weird random garbage piles and homeless people sleeping all over time square but its so breath taking at night. the people are any type of people you can literally imagine and the food scene is like nothing else. I miss new york you will love it!
Gotta Put these on my *MUST WATCH* list that's for sure-- love this Channel...❤❤❤😍😍
Orgullosamente Boliviana😎
Nuestros hermanos bolivianos buena empanada 👍🏽
“Which are sometimes called Bolivian soup dumplings” I’m not Bolivian but I’m pretty sure no one but food insider calls it that.
To everyone saying this is like a Karipap you do realize the texture inside is much closer to a soup than it is curry right?
Yeah I get they look the same but it's like saying soups and stews are the same.
(that said Karipap is also very good to eat)
Thanks Bolivian LLama Party for being my little piece of Bolivia here in the tristate
I produce and sell salteñas in México and is a very Hard process. Greatings
I am Bolivian German.
Nice to see that it is accepted in NYC. I will try soon.
But usually you do eat salteñas with a spoon 🥄.
Greetings
Don't know man, legend says that If you can't eat a salteña without a spoon, you're probably a bad kisser. 😂
Jk. Any way you eat it, it's freaking delicious.
It's false, true bolivians can eat salteñas without a spoon, spoon is for noobies. You need practice to master eating salteñas without spoon.
Good food will always be accepted by anyone, unless there is religional constrains.
Mauricio Cuellar true that
Spoon? You are onli German but never Bolivian.
Happy 194 years, Bolivia!
Thank's 👍😎😁
It looks like Curry Puff @ Karipap a lot. Esp the braiding thingy
Right?? Similarities beyond boundaries!!
@Singapore Pearl I think it is not originated in Portuguese(more as an inspirations) as the fillings came from asian countries like curry, curry leaves etc
karipap karipap lerrr
Epok epok came before the Curry Puff (Karipap). Epok epok was inspired by the Portuguese empanada in the 1500s in the Malay Peninsula, while Spaniards took the empanadas to the Phillipines. The curry puff (Karipap) was created in 1820s Singapore to placate British palates that brought over the Cornish pastries and were served by Indian cooks (who knew curry and potatoes all too well).
Curry puff is flakier and often more buttery than Epok epok. This flaky and buttery style was born in the kitchen of the legendary Polar Café founder, Mr. Chan Hinky, on High Street (now it is Polar Puffs and Café). Mr. Chan’s specialization - western pastries - gave rise to the marriage of western-style, buttery and flaky pastry flour and the locally beloved chicken curry. He had bought the curry recipe from an Indian merchant and soon afterwards achieved a new sensational hit when he introduced the “curry puff” to his café in 1926.
Fun fact: Although these baked or fried wheat flour dough pockets filled with meat and vegetable were staples in Iberia (what is today known as Portugal and Spain), the actual idea came from the Middle East. The dish (a form of the Persian sanbusak سنبوساگ ) came to Iberia through Morocco. From the Middle East, the Persian sanbusak went west to be the Iberian *empanada* and to the east it went to India to become the *samosa.* So both the empanada-inspired *Epok epok* and the samosa-inspired *Karipap* can both be traced back to the *Sanbusak.*
Here in Bolivia it is served with a teaspoon to scoop up the broth. Ideal for those of us who can't eat it like a local. 😂
I love Bolivian Food , greeting from a bolivian youtuber in Japan
I am half Bolivian and Brazilian and I LOVE SALTEÑAS!
Bet you a smoke show
Se ven muy rica las salteñas Saludos desde Bolivia
🇧🇴🇧🇴🇧🇴 Finally people recognizing our food! 🇧🇴🇧🇴🇧🇴
As a Bolivian, I can say my grandparents go to these guys all the time to get sáltenlas. It’s the best!
What an amazing food! The work that goes into making it. Wish I was there or it was here in NZ.
awesome, all food is good and tasty,
beautiful capture of subway,
Bolivian soup dumplings... That name had me laughing so hard 😂
?!?!?
It’s more like a pie😂😂😂 that’s how we Bolivians compare it to
What a great video, I spent 26 years of my life in Bolivia and I can say Bolivian food is amazing an I can wait to go to Llama Party for getting a docen of Salteñas. Tha k you.
I have extra 12 more salteñas spare to finish and THEY ARE SO DAMN GOOD
Saltena can't be fast food, is too complex for that.
It definitely deserves more respect than fast food
Los gringuitos lo ven exotico, yo me mando mi salteñota todos los dias. Privilegio 👌👌
Osea que comes manteca todos los dias, suerte con esas arterias
That green sauce is 🔥🔥🔥. I don't mean spicy, I mean delicious. The hard boiled egg caught me off guard but I enjoyed it.
@@margared3048 llajua :)

yes
Macam karipap
They moment this sandwich came into play, that was it. We're going!
Bolivia ❤🇧🇴
Why is he putting llajua in the salteña??!!!??
Except by that, what a great team and a wonderful idea!!! Lot of success for them!
BOLIVIAAAA BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY, THE FOOD IS THE BEST
I never had Bolivian foods before, but I want to try them.
Pork chop salteña? That's something that they came up with, I've never seen that in Bolivia
Me too. I wish there was a place were I could get some pork chop salteñas here in Bolivia tho.
Well, there's fricase salteña, which is the most glorious one. Or an absolute sin.
It's all too American, like any migrant food in the USA, they put in too much of everything, make it too big, too fancy. It's not supposed to be a rich man dish.
OF COURSE!!! BECAUSE THAT S NOT FROM BOLIVIA !!! SALTA OR SALTEÑA IS FROM ARGENTINE!!
@@fabiescamillafe salta was part of Peru when it was invented
In Bolivia we say that if you let out even a single drop of the filling ure a bad kisser lol 😂
Makes sense though haha
Who else thought subway as in the sandwich chain😂
Shadow Trooper Meeeeeeeeeee!
Only non New Yorkers fall for that honestly
Subway train station was around way before subway the restaurant was around lol
I did too
it's actually a but misleading to say it's in the subway. it's just an underground food court and it connects to the train station. plenty of cities have similar things. we have the gallery in philly and it's very much the same.
Non New Yorkers will fall for THAT
As bolivian, I really want to meet this place if I ever go to ny.
Really love these ideas of restaurants in the subway
Chucha, que pecado no tener un buen restaurante Boliviano en Los Angeles CA, EE.UU...
Keep up the great work....
Saludos muchachos!!!
I have sent this link to some Bolivian friends. When I was in Bolivia I remember being given a small plastic spoon to use for eating the salteña. Am I remembering wrong? This was 20+ years ago.
The saltenas r so pretty...🤤🤤

You can find the best food from around the world in America....certainly the best Italian, Thai and Mexican. This stuff is mouthwatering
bolivians where you at?
Here!
Turnstyle, in general, is the shit. All the restaurants and stores there are awesome, including Bolivian Llama Party
Yeah you have and must learn to eat a salteña ☺️ it happens to all of us non Bolivian people 😅
I am all in on that sandwich! That sounds good
i take the train to columbus circle every day, i should try this!!

I misread the title thinking I was watching "the best bolivian food is found in subway" lmao I cant be the only one here expecting to see a bolivian sub haha
I need this in my life
oh yea! Also if you get a chance come to Bolivia! If you ever have a questions about Bolivia just let me know and I will make a video to answer your question!
Salteñas has similiarities with indonesian food . It called Pastel .
Btw salteñas looks so yummy
Great to know bolivian dish .
I hope oropeza brothers also can make a halal version of salteñas
If your a local it's downstairs Columbus and no train ride necessary.
So proud to be a Bolivian American. I make salteñas, agreed so complicated.
5:26 Patrick knows how to make an opening with his mouth, drop it in slowly, give it a mix, eat around and drink the juice. He showed her.
its call curry puff in Malaysia
The saltenas are delicious!! Bolivians ;)
Ive never seen Salteñas that have that soupy consistency. If you’re in the DMV there’s a place in northern VA called Pan American Bakery that makes delicious Salteñas.
My family actually owns the pan American bakery. There probably one of the best saltenas you can get in the dmv area and one of the first Bolivian restaurants to open.
Can’t wait to go there, and order ten on them!!!
In malaysia we call this curry puff . But it has curry , potatoes .. chicken or beef inside .
Yo quiero uno se ve rico me di hambre
They're called Cornish Pasties!!! Also the bit on the top is called 'crimping'. Americans are excited over the opening of an envelope!!
thanos gauntlet hand edit is the best

That looks very good
@Food Insider Best Bolivian Food In NYC...eating Salteñas (meaning: from Salta -Argentina-)
Que delicia!!! Congratulations to these hard-working Brothers!
I'm Bolivian American, but I've never heard them be called soup dumplings (but it makes sense)
This outside bread is exactly shaped as those my mom used to make it last two decades.Only inside can be different ingredients filled.Outside the bread usually will be toasted or fried.
Bolivia❤💛💚🇧🇴🤗
Omg I work by this place and the food is amazing 🎉
Can you guys find restaurants of different cultures in Philly please
Tbh as a Bolivian their Salteñas were not traditional.. the bread is solid with a strong braid.. but the sauce has an oaky Americanized unauthentic flavor.. almost bbqesque.. the bread saves it.. 6/10. Cherimoya juice is amazing though
