  • All signs pointed me towards different components at fault with this one, but as you'll see, the issue was so farfetched that I almost never found it!! I hope you enjoy!

    Hi Sam ... good logic on the fix. You are a excellent technician. I paused the video when you showed us the shorted wire. i noticed many more wires in the same condition. If you still have the amp you might want to clip the others.

    That feeling you had on this amp where you had no clue what was going on and didn't know what to do, well that is how I feel with every amp I check out. Lol. Good job finding the short.

    *Audison need to see this video. I have NEVER owned Audison that wasn't LRx Series. THIS AV5.1k is a sad imitation of the LRx5.1k that it replaced. This is clearly the end result of cost cutting and attempting to 'update' (or CHEAPEN) an already bulletproof design as production moved to China from Italy.*

    Sam, I have had something similar to that with a CT Sounds AT1400.1D, it has a ribbon cable that runs from the Bass Knob/Head Unit switch underneath the board. A solder point on a component was so sharp that it broken the sheathing on the conductor and shorted hot to the rail cap and I have 12v everywhere, until I removed the board from the heatsink, and moved the ribbon cable. I was going crazy also...

    These are the kinds of faults that you can face at the factory with boards from production lines... random ...as anything can be wrong including bad PCB etching.
    Thoroughly entertaining find...good work⚡

      Seconded, I used to work for a company that made industrial controllers and they decided to cheap out and forewent ATE tests on one batch of boards, most were ok, but we were bashing out heads on one board that had a weird fault, only to discover there was a tiny wisp of a wire bridge across some control lines. Barely visible, but enough to cause a bunch of headaches. Needless to say from that point on, ATE was a given 😅

    Holy cow! That was a pretty fascinating 40 minutes. Even though I only understood about 10% of what you were talking about.
    I'm a big fan of Audison products and to see the insides like that and to hear your relative approval was great.

    So truthfully this was a factory issue waiting to happen. One would hope this kind of repair is covered under a manufacturer warranty but I'm sure it's not. I could see this happening from a cheaper brand of amplifier but not from a company that claims higher end products attached to extremely high prices.

    You know what would make for a fun video (though, I do recognize it'd be a bitch for you): A video of re-assembling an amp like this. Would love to see the process of applying paste and what not.

    out of interest what mosfets did you end up putting in that were beefier? stock on my 5.1k is the PBF 4232 (now discontinued) which have been replaced by pbf4332

    Nice find. Another fancy expensive amplifier with basic build quality issues. What a shame. Why is there no apparent quality control anymore? For that money, you get loose transformer windings and traces that might short to whatever trace that's next to it. This is a serious problem and it could have been worse: imagine that suddenly the amp shorts its main rail caps into the remote line, because of shoddy workmanship at the factory. Would your head unit survive that?
    Man, I can get so angry about this. This is such a basic electronics assembly mistake, to leave the component leads slightly too long and then to just fold them over in a random direction, like exactly on top of a neighboring trace with just a few microns of lacquer preventing a short, in a high vibrations environment. If you don't have the decency to clip them properly, then, at least, fold them on their own trace, so they cannot short on another trace. And what about QC? Either the QC people at Audison do their work blindfolded or they are just not qualified for that job.
    I opened up a lot of electronics in my life. I've seen mistakes and design errors. But I never saw such a negligent assembly job.
    Sorry for ranting. I'm just frustrated by the fact that overall build quality of all kinds of devices has been falling. And this amp reached a new low.

    • @barevids
      @barevids  2 роки тому

      Yep, it's very lucky there was a diode in series with the remote trace or the head unit would certainly have been on fire!

    I liked it. I was about to send you one of these. Can I send it sometime soon :) 1 channel is a little distorted and fading at the moment.

    • @fluffyblue4006
      @fluffyblue4006 2 роки тому +1

      You have one of these? Well, if you can get to the underside of the circuit board without having to disassemble the mosfets and heatsinks, you should upright all folded down component leads and clip them properly. It might solve your problem. Be careful and keep track of the clippings. Remove all of them. If any stay behind somewhere in the amp, it can cause serious issues. Or maybe it's just a level adjust pot or a switch that needs some cleaning/lube spray. Issue can also be caused by a loose solder joint. If you have a soldering iron, then it's an easy DIY fix, if you can find it. If these simple DIY fixes don't fix it, then, send it to Sam.

    Hi sam. My infinity kappa 4 class D 125x4 has supply issue. I am not getting the negative rail voltage. Positive rail is fine.
    Can you help me with possible culprit ?
    I happened after i accidentally touched ground wire on one of speaker outputs..

    • @barevids
      @barevids  2 роки тому +4

      I'll just tell you. I have zero background in electronics or engineering. Didn't take any classes or study this. In 2017, I ended up with a pile of warranty returned amps that I couldn't get fixed in the UK and only option was to send them back to Brazil or just take the hit on costs. So I decided to learn how to repair them. I bought Perry's repair guide from bcae1 which is a bit outdated but covers the basics and spent a few weeks reading. I had a friend who was an amp tech that gave me a few tips here and there. I learnt it through trial and error mostly. Before 2017 I had no idea what a mosfet was or any clue about electronics.
