It is a beautiful documentary.
Subash had always been interested in story and script writing, but he never imagined his life would become as adventurous as a movie script.
On September 3, 2006, Subash and his friends, including Siju David (Kuttan) and Krishna Kumar, visited Guna caves after exploring a few places in Kodaikanal.
Siju David/Kuttan (Rescuer) We reached Guna caves at 2 PM after visiting a few places in Kodaikanal. It was a very beautiful place.
krishna kumar ( one of the friend): It had started raining when we went down.
Siju: The opening of the hole was very small. We didn't imagine that it could be this deep. Even a small child could easily step over it and cross it. Subash was trying to cross over it but slipped and fell inside. We were all stunned for a minute.
Krishna Kumar: For a few minutes, we were stunned. No one knew what was happening.
Sixson (one of the friends): We tried calling him for about 15 minutes but got no response. Then, as a last resort, we prayed and called his name again, finally we heard got a reply.
Krishna Kumar: Then it started raining heavily, and all the water began rushing into the hole.
Siju: It was raining heavily, and since the hole was in a low area, all the water was rushing into it from everywhere. We were scared that the water might wash Subah down or that stones might fall on him, so we tried our best to stop the water flow. This went on for about 2-3 hours. We didn't know what we were doing; there was too much water coming in. Even though we were unsure of what we were doing amidst the chaos, we tried our best
Krishna Kumar: The five of us took turns calling him. We wanted to keep him awake so he wouldn't pass out, so we kept talking to him. We told him that the fire brigade was on the way while others went to fetch the police.
Siju: Then the fire brigade arrived. They asked seven of us to leave the cave. We thought they would descend into the hole.
Jinson (one of the friends): We all thought one of the firefighters would go down the cave. Instead, one of them would approach the hole and then come back. This happened for half an hour.
Sixson: Locals said 13 people have died here. Your friend is going to be the 14th one. We were so devastated. We started praying to God.
Subash: It was complete darkness. Then it started raining. There were stones falling from the top, but they rolled down from the side. I saw bats. It was all darkness. I could only see all this when Kuttan came in with the torch.
Interviwer : Could you hear your friends?
Subash: I could, and I was responding, but I was disoriented and replying mostly with hmms and other sounds. I was stuck on a boulder, then I could feel a stone on my feet and used it for support. It was too cold, like being inside a freezer. My body was frozen. I think I survived only because I didn't want to die.
Siju: When we called the firefighers, they said it's no use. No one has survived. But then they came. They tried to go down the hole, but even after half an hour when no one went, I told them I am ready to go down. Initially, they refused, but then the locals interfered, and a situation came where if we didn't go down, one of the fireforce would have had to. So they agreed to let me in. They used their rope and tied our torch around my neck. I went down, one rope around me and one in my hand.
Subash: I heard someone telling Kuttan is coming down. After a while, I saw Kuttan coming down with a torch around his neck and a rope in his hand. The first thing I asked him when he came near me was, "Will I survive, Kutta?" He said, "Don't worry, we will make it."
Siju: The hole is not straight; it is very uneven with twists and turns, much like a ride at a theme park. Then the rope finished. I could hear Subash but was not able to see him. I couldn't see the entry hole on the top. I was standing on a rock, and that's when I got a little scared. Then, in 10 minutes, they tied another rope. When I came close to Subash, the first thing he asked was if he will survive. I told him we go up anyhow. Then I tied the rope around him.
Subash: He tied the rope around me. I was all bruised, but he tied it somehow. Then they pulled us up, and then we got stuck. From there, we both had to climb up a bit. Then they pulled us out.
Siju: The rope got stuck, and some time got wasted there. They pushed the rope down using a log to adjust the rope. When we came out, the first thing they asked was if we saw any skeletons.
Local from Kodaikanal: There is a slippery place inside the cave. If you slip and fall down into the hole, retrieving from there is difficult. No one has survived from this. This is the first person. He survived because of the friend.
Interviewer at Guna cave: A businessman called Chembaka Nadar died here in one of the holes in the cave in 1955; his son created a stupa in his name near the cave.
Siju's mother: I believe he could do it because of God's grace. He did a good thing. I couldn't ask him.
Subash's mother: I was so shocked I couldn't speak for a month. This is like a second life for my son. I'm happy for that.
Subash's relative: When we asked Siju where did he get courage to go down into the cave, Siju said there was no point in coming back without him. Ten of us left for Kodaikanal, and all of us are coming back. We were not going to leave without him, so we didn't think much; I went down.
Subash: I called my mom first when I fell down. Then I called God. No matter how atheist we are, we call God when we're in such life-and-death situations.
