Fantastic video! I feel inspired and informed. I especially agree with the philosophy that one should pick the character they most prefer playing. Tier lists are an inevitable form of analysis, but they shouldn't hinder player choice in who they play. Good job!
Hey Izaw, some people don't see the value, but as someone who wants to improve the 2nd and 3rd video of the series have been very helpful and I'm sure the 1st one has been pivotal for some beginner. Thanks a lot, you're awesome! I'd like to play you some day
+Threegale megaman isn't considered low tier by anyone though lol. a lot of people, especially japan, knew that Mega man was an amazing character and scatt helped show it to the people in the US
Infernio _Playz I actually can't stand cloud because his players on FG leave every match and are generally really cocky so I can't learn the matchup without finding friends, and his down B forces approach on pretty much everyone which makes it hard to take a second to examine the sitaution.
Most complains top players have are pretty solid, and I see mid ranked players complain more lol edit: if you mean play characters you like and not top tiers only, then it makes sense. Top players are top players for a reason, they use a good character, have insane mindgames and know their fundamentals.
USERNAME_69_420 No, like, I have seen ZeRo and other top players complain more about Lucario's Aura recently than a lot of the mid-level players I know. I have a Lucario player in my region and they complain less here than ZeRo. Someone even told me ZeRo yelled about Lucario being bullshit when he lost a game. So...
Damn step four got real. Great video as always, keep it up! You're truly an inspiring person and your videos always teach me something I may have overlooked or entirely not known. : )
Personally, I think it should be right after teching. In this video, DI is presented as a no-brainer. I think he should have talked about anticipating DI. DI is fairly simple and can quickly improve your gameplay with little effort.
Dude, hope you include these things in a possible "Professional" video: 1) Z-Air Drop (do instant ledge grab with Z-Air, press down and jump, it gives you a little more edge-guarding distance) 2) Step Dash. 3) Pivot Forward Smash and Pivot JC Up Smash. 4) Shield Grab (dash being canceled by shield and then inputting grab afterwards). 5) Ledge Drop Wall Jump (instantly wall jumping after letting go of the ledge).
+ChanseySmasher ! It is pretty situational and I like to go for easier hits after arcthunder but it is an option. I haven't tested it but I think you could do something like arcthunder --> footstool --> book lock --> arcfire --> arcfire.
+SuperScopeRawks +IzawSmash Thank you very much! This works pretty reliably after a little practice. Also, great video, it was easy to follow without being overwhelming at all!
Hey Izaw, at 1:17, Did you mean "diagonally"? Because vertically In that scenario would mean contradicting the previous directions u gave a few seconds earlier. Thank you
now I don't know about you lot but DI fits into the beginner section to me. Its so much easier than stuff like b reversing and also you know when to use it; when you get hit.
Ikr. It's super frustrating and I don't even know why but I find myself losing alot against people who just spam moves. I usually play better against people who do all these advanced stuff. Maybe It's because I have more fun playing or something like that but it's very frustrating ;(
オオカミ The worst of the bunch absolutely adore playing as Rosa & Luma, because one or two of her dodges makes her invisible for a second and that makes their abuse harder to punish. Sure Palutena and Mewtwo kinda do the same stuff, but mewtwo is DLC and most people don't like playing as palutena.
+Jesus Manzo Maybe that is my problem since I'm a Greninja and Robin main and those are considered hard characters to play but I really love them too much to switch my main. I think it's just a lack of skill that I can't handle spam.
At 1:15 the video illustrates not using down and away as DI for straight vertical launches. Then a few seconds later suggests that if launched "more vertical" to use down and right. I'm assuming "horizontal" was the intended wording here. Might want to fix that to avoid confusion for new players.
2 things. I feel like you didn't explain ledge trump fully. There were multiple times in the video where you slid off the stage and immediately grabbed the ledge to ledge trump. But you never explained how to do that. The second thing is about tomahawks. Are they still a viable option for characters with tether grabs? I main Samus, and her grab is reactable, and if I miss I'll take a huge punish for it.
ledge trumping is done by rotating your stick from away from the ledge (ie left or right) to downwards. the timing is stricter the faster your character falls. you can still do tomahawks with slow grab characters but just don't use it that often.
If you're using the gamepad or a WiiU pro controller, it won't work. The joystick has to have corners or rigdges, since rolling the joystick on one of the ridges counts as an input. So there are two things you can do, one is to instead tap repeatedly on the joystick, or get a new controller and use the rubbing method, if you're still confused, check out MySmashCorners vid for more details.
I feel the same. The concepts and execution are a lot easier to grasp, but I guess it doesn't matter. Either way, you're learning a bunch of shit to git gud.
You forgot to mention the *Queue Clear/Clean-up* Which is just when you spam a move (a quick one like jab, some tilts, some aerials, etc.) when the enemy has just died or when you have a moment to breathe so that you can clear your 9-move stale queue and regain freshness on your other moves. This is very helpful for Ness and R.O.B. (off the top of my head) because you don't want much knockback/damage on spammy tilts like R.O.B. and Ness's down tilts so that you can get, potentially, more in at a time. Near-negligible advantages to most, but I try to gain even the smallest percent advantages. This can mean the difference between Clashing moves that would have killed you (i.e. a tilt clashing with a smash attack or other kill move when it's fresh, but not when it's stale) actually killing or not.
I'd love to see an art of Lucas video. I know quite a few of this techniques apply to him as he is all about the mix-ups. especially buffering aerials, which I do alot. he's my main and I'm trying to absolutely master him. so I'd love to see some pro tips on him because I'm sure there must be some things that I may be missing. would be greatly appreciated if you did this. hoping there are other Lucas mains out there that think the same. not enough Lucas on the pro scene either. believe he's really underrated
Awesome! Now I can get into the real stuff! Time to improve my game! "First up, Directional Influence." Great video anyways. The fundamentals are always important, and honestly, improving your fundamentals is better then learning the newest AT. You can't utilize any AT that well without the proper fundamentals.
Now then I'm on the transition between advanced and expert... Some how I can play toon link like the worlds best juggler (juggling both bombs and my opponent) but then the closest thing I get to that with any other character is me trying and failing to monado purge as shulk
Corrin's counter surge used to be broken because it had a good counter knockback yet it was completely vertical, so it could kill very early and pathetically easily at any point on-stage, making Bayonetta vs Corrin matchups when they just came out very hard for Bayonetta's side. But people complained, and then they nerfed it so it's acceptable. Hoo-hah combo, that totally broke the game too, and it got patched reasonably due to the absurdly early kills (60% I think?) it gave Diddy Kong. Wectoring also got removed, since it allowed Wario to survive high knockback attacks easily as long as they don't outright kill him, but he'd be doomed to not be able to grab the ledge without wectoring, and it also allowed him to get back on stage easily without being edgeguarded. Some things are indeed broken, and they do indeed get patched, but the problem in smash is that if you complain about a character, you complain about atleast a few people's mains, and they take offence to that.
+M Depends if you're a regular sonic or a defence camp spam side B shield cancel to stack the sound effect sonic, like that one guy who I forgot his name who fought against ZeRo and drove the audience insane. though, tbh sonic's f-air is pretty much falco's in disguise.
Doringo nah,i'm a rushdown sonic. depending on side / down b is boring. when i get my wii u back, I want to learn sonic's more interesting setups .i obviously keep the fundamentals tho
I had always a question that I never thought about asking can I increase my knockback (holding up when DI) at low% to help me recover with characters like Little Mac or Doctor Mario?
I can't trump well without giving stage control which puts me in a bad spot. I an also slow at bair punishes. Is there an input I should use with the joystick or jump button? Very informative video
you helped me so much my friend is like, dont main him/her they're bad! so i get all "oh maybe i should'nt main them" so thanks for all the awesome tips
+IzawSmash Thanks for this great series. I have a question: What would you recommend against an opponent who is shielding your aerials well if your character has a very slow grab, and thus tomahawk grabs aren't very effective?
Point #4 is a real hard hitter. I can't tell you how many times I underestimated a Little Mac until I saw one going for nair footstool dair resets. Everyone is viable in their own way.
heh, this is fun, I already knew how to DI even before knowing how to dodge with shield. just wanted to stay in the arena so used the stick to go back and it worked lol.
@IzawSmash I know most of these ATs and I use them pretty often. But Im only as good as a level 9 CPU. Could you help me by doing like a Art of Movement or Luigi (he's my main)? That would really help me out.
14:22 “Nothing is broken or overpowered...” Now I know he means that if you’re good enough, you can stand up to any challenge... But still... Bayonetta?
I'm kinda stoned so I don't remember fully but did you cover tilt stick vs smash stick? Which is better? Theres a difference in momentum for aerials right?
Instructions unclear, Wiimote stuck in GameCube Adapter. Also, stale moves only directly effect damage, which goes on to effect knockback via the KB formula as opposed to directly reducing it.
Don't ignore the the tier list... You aren't gonna be able to beat top players with Jigglypuff. Play who you want, but if that character has bad options then you should consider playing better characters if you actually want to win. Imo, saying that you should play "whatever character you like the most" might be good advice starting out, but overall you should at least pocket a top tier character for problematic match ups. Just my two cents :)
If the top player is playing someone like Sheik, yeah you have a chance against them with Jigglypuff. If they're playing Mario, however, then just forfeit lmao.
main everyone as soon as you're interested in their playstyle. I believe that every main can teach you more about the game, I picked up spacing by playing marth and ike for example. sure they'll demote to secondaries like as soon as you lose interest but you already mained them previously.

I agree, highest quality of any smash channel I've come across
It's funny cause the video is "How to play Expert" and Cloud's on the thumbnail
Lol
Try playing Cloud at top level, it isn't easy
Make this top comment lol
MegaFatcat100 Yeah he is.
+MegaFatcat100 Yeah he is.
Who ever says that smash is not full of depth needs to watch these videos. This a simple game to start out on, but that is just the surface.
Drinking game: take a shot every time Izaw suggests you watch a BSD video
xD

See you again in hell :D
+Mr. M (Felipe) 5. So yeah. You'd get pretty drunk. Plus, in a matter of 15 minutes

"Stop complaining"
"any character can win"
come on Izaw, we all know a Ganon isn't going to win a big tournament
unless you mean individual games then, yeah depending on skill level any character can win a game
megaman almost won evo, sure megaman have potential (and ganon, not really) but would you ever think that will happened?
+Spin Duh in Japan a link got second at a major
+Spin Duh I meant individual games, tournaments are still very unpredictable though
+Threegale megaman isn't considered low tier by anyone though lol. a lot of people, especially japan, knew that Mega man was an amazing character and scatt helped show it to the people in the US

waiting for how to play:God edition
Warning: God edition is only possible to follow with a 20XX edition gamecube controller and a top tier character.
+Doringo God edition: Step 1: Pick cloud
Step 2: Press down B and profit.
Just kidding, it is always funny how people complain about cloud. Lmao
Infernio _Playz
I actually can't stand cloud because his players on FG leave every match and are generally really cocky so I can't learn the matchup without finding friends, and his down B forces approach on pretty much everyone which makes it hard to take a second to examine the sitaution.
+Doringo wanna be friends on wii u i am pretty good competetive cloud
+Doringo And don't worry I have time to play every day
This entire video series is amazing. I am extremely grateful that you have made these.
Is it bad that I'm studying for a smash tournament more than I'm studying for my finals
Nah
Yes
Just means your studying what you actually want too
No, it is not
I swear mid-rank players follow Step 4 more than some top ranking players...
Most complains top players have are pretty solid, and I see mid ranked players complain more lol

+Rukia Shimazu I think if zero lost a game to s Lucario we would all know about it lol

the bayonetta drama is a good example of this

I've been so hyped for the next vid! Keep it up :3
So much videos from Beafy Smash Doods ! Anyway, thanks a lot for what you did, keep like this !
how the hell is DI in the expert video lol
Which video do you think it should be in?
Personally, I think it should be right after teching. In this video, DI is presented as a no-brainer. I think he should have talked about anticipating DI. DI is fairly simple and can quickly improve your gameplay with little effort.
DI should be in basic, every player should know it at least.
im pretty sure the tutorial in brawl talks about di...
Mortus Evil same
Dude, hope you include these things in a possible "Professional" video:
1) Z-Air Drop (do instant ledge grab with Z-Air, press down and jump, it gives you a little more edge-guarding distance)
2) Step Dash.
3) Pivot Forward Smash and Pivot JC Up Smash.
4) Shield Grab (dash being canceled by shield and then inputting grab afterwards).
5) Ledge Drop Wall Jump (instantly wall jumping after letting go of the ledge).
Amazing video please keep them coming! I've learned something new in each one! Thank you!
Stale moves resetting? Wow, I never knew that was an actual thing. This helped out a lot, thanks!
Yooo Amazing job on the vid IzawSmash
Is it sad that I knew more expert techs then advanced?
Damn, I never knew Mario had a footstool combo. Everyone has footstool combos lol
Not Robin
+ChanseySmasher ! Arcthunder/Arcfire->Footstool->Book Drop->Arcthunder/Arcfire -> Followup such as DThrow -> something depending on the moves.
+ChanseySmasher ! You can get really easy footstools after a Arcthunder when your opponent is near enough and jablock with a book.
+オオカミ Yeah You're right and I tested it and it worked, but It is difficult to know when the tome is going to dissapear. Not very used indeed.
+ChanseySmasher ! It is pretty situational and I like to go for easier hits after arcthunder but it is an option. I haven't tested it but I think you could do something like arcthunder --> footstool --> book lock --> arcfire --> arcfire.
Says nothing is broken
(Bayo walks in)
AY WHAT CHU SAY
How do u ledge trump, how do u just drop down and grab the ledge
I wish he would have explained this.
I keep seeing that instant ledge snap when people trump, but it's never explained how to do it. Any help?
When you run off the ledge instantly tap in the direction of the ledge. It helps to do a half circle motion with the control stick.
Circle your analog stick from right, down, to left really fast
+SuperScopeRawks +IzawSmash Thank you very much! This works pretty reliably after a little practice. Also, great video, it was easy to follow without being overwhelming at all!
Hey Izaw, at 1:17, Did you mean "diagonally"? Because vertically In that scenario would mean contradicting the previous directions u gave a few seconds earlier. Thank you
Glad you said to ignore the tier list cuz I main the pink puff balls
now I don't know about you lot but DI fits into the beginner section to me. Its so much easier than stuff like b reversing and also you know when to use it; when you get hit.
"Nothing is broken or overpowered" spoken like a true triple-projectile main ;)
I've been following you were rocking brawl link, good to see your still playing the game and uploading quality content.
I'm glad that you mentioned step 4.Someone really had to do it.
Before I even started this video, when I saw "Expert" I stopped playing smash and focused 100% on the video saying, " This is going to get SPICY!"
This video is basically "Subscribe to Beefy Smash Doods". And I'm ok with this.
Tfw u know all of this but still loose to FG scrubs .-.
Because FG scrubs worship the goddess of luck to be able to win with their roll abusing little mac at over 100 percent on their last stock.
Ikr. It's super frustrating and I don't even know why but I find myself losing alot against people who just spam moves. I usually play better against people who do all these advanced stuff. Maybe It's because I have more fun playing or something like that but it's very frustrating ;(
オオカミ
The worst of the bunch absolutely adore playing as Rosa & Luma, because one or two of her dodges makes her invisible for a second and that makes their abuse harder to punish.
Sure Palutena and Mewtwo kinda do the same stuff, but mewtwo is DLC and most people don't like playing as palutena.
I feel you man. I hate when i lose to a FG scrub because the lag makes me miss all my perfect pivots, edgeguards and punishes.
+Jesus Manzo Maybe that is my problem since I'm a Greninja and Robin main and those are considered hard characters to play but I really love them too much to switch my main. I think it's just a lack of skill that I can't handle spam.

ledge trumping is done by rotating your stick from away from the ledge (ie left or right) to downwards. the timing is stricter the faster your character falls. you can still do tomahawks with slow grab characters but just don't use it that often.
DI: The most expert of advanced techniques

You forgot to mention the *Queue Clear/Clean-up*
Which is just when you spam a move (a quick one like jab, some tilts, some aerials, etc.) when the enemy has just died or when you have a moment to breathe so that you can clear your 9-move stale queue and regain freshness on your other moves. This is very helpful for Ness and R.O.B. All I got from the Thumbnail is play Cloud to be an expert
Malware *bayonetta
14:13 So step 4 is basically for all the scrubs complaining about Cloud and Ryu
As a Ryu main I don't see many people talking trash about Ryu, but oh god Cloud, Rosalina, and Diddy. Those guys get a lot of hate.
Only one thing is was super advanced, but I learned something so good job man.
Now then I'm on the transition between advanced and expert...
Some how I can play toon link like the worlds best juggler (juggling both bombs and my opponent) but then the closest thing I get to that with any other character is me trying and failing to monado purge as shulk
I always wondered about tomahawking, after watching a video of professor False talking about tomahawking in melee
ike is good at tomahawk grabs.
14:17 meta knight would be the same though from brawl
Corrin's counter surge used to be broken because it had a good counter knockback yet it was completely vertical, so it could kill very early and pathetically easily at any point on-stage, making Bayonetta vs Corrin matchups when they just came out very hard for Bayonetta's side. +Doringo Falco's F-Air is better and Longer.
You're an awesome dude, Izaw. And your Link is hype as fuck.
I just want to know how to stop doing dash attacks so often and do jabs right out of a dash
Very informative video
you helped me so much
my friend is like, dont main him/her they're bad!
so i get all "oh maybe i should'nt main them"
so thanks for all the awesome tips
Which direction do I smash di to get out of Yoshi's down air? Thanks
I'd really love to see an Art of Greninja episode since he's such a tricky character!
+IzawSmash Thanks for this great series. I have a question: What would you recommend against an opponent who is shielding your aerials well if your character has a very slow grab, and thus tomahawk grabs aren't very effective?

except jiggs kappa
except jiggs?
dude jiggs has one of the most dangerous edge guards in the game
+DyticNo i mean its good if you know how but jiggs is very limited as to what she can do
Your intro is basically link killing Zelda
This series is informative AF! I think DI, ledge trump, and Tomahawk should have been in advanced though.
heh, this is fun, I already knew how to DI even before knowing how to dodge with shield. just wanted to stay in the arena so used the stick to go back and it worked lol.
@IzawSmash I know most of these ATs and I use them pretty often. But Im only as good as a level 9 CPU. Could you help me by doing like a Art of Movement or Luigi (he's my main)? That would really help me out.
The thing is, how do I counter Sonic with Kirby, or Cloud with Lucas? (Inb4 "Git Gud")
When you said to stop complaining, I was just like... You are right, I should stop complaining.
can't wait to see you master video
11:43 - To be continued
*Does all of this*
*still loses to FG little macs who spam dash attack and forward smash*
Did I miss the part you explained how to frame cancel?
IzawSmash. I was unable to add your discord. Im am new to discord. So im still learning how the app itself works.
What version of smash was this recorded with?
I’m probably going to sound stupid for asking this, but how do you grab the ledge from standing on the stage in order to ledge trump?
Nvm I figured it out
Izaw, may we have an art of Captain Falcon and/or Ganon video please?
sure!
IzawSmash Respect!
That isn't meant to be offensive, it's just a way of saying thanks!
( Last time I said respect everybody thought I was being rude and I got hate )
lol ^^
+King Haunt “RedEmRa” Gaming - Stories I will definitely be watching that when it releases (being a falcon main and all)
14:22 “Nothing is broken or overpowered...” Now I know he means that if you’re good enough, you can stand up to any challenge...
But still...
Bayonetta?
"No character is overpowered."
Bayo- is that a challenge?
5:25 Hadukon!
Vectoring wasn't removed from the game?
How can I tell when i frame cancel an aerial. I cant tell if i do it correct when in training mode with Cloud using fair.
You can see the difference if you can pull of your shield faster than normal after the fair. Also watch "Art of cloud" on yt. it hepls
at 1:15, did you mean to say "If a move launches you a bit more horizontally?"
Izaw mentioned Monado Purge, a very specific, specialized technique... THE ART OF SHULK NEXT?
I'm kinda stoned so I don't remember fully but did you cover tilt stick vs smash stick? Which is better? Theres a difference in momentum for aerials right?
you have better momentum from tilt stick. My Smash Corner covered it in his video about the best control setup(s)
MySmashCorner talks about it in his controller video
Thanks guys!
Instructions unclear, Wiimote stuck in GameCube Adapter.
Also, stale moves only directly effect damage, which goes on to effect knockback via the KB formula as opposed to directly reducing it.
is it possible to reset to early, because I think I do that all the time
how do you Smash di to escape Yoshi's down air?
Don't ignore the the tier list... You aren't gonna be able to beat top players with Jigglypuff. Play who you want, but if that character has bad options then you should consider playing better characters if you actually want to win. Imo, saying that you should play "whatever character you like the most" might be good advice starting out, but overall you should at least pocket a top tier character for problematic match ups. Just my two cents :)
If you are skilled enough, you can win with every main. The tiers lists are often made with tournament results bro.
If the top player is playing someone like Sheik, yeah you have a chance against them with Jigglypuff. If they're playing Mario, however, then just forfeit lmao.
Ayy fite my jigglypuff
Ayy fite my jigglypuff
main everyone as soon as you're interested in their playstyle. I believe that every main can teach you more about the game, I picked up spacing by playing marth and ike for example. sure they'll demote to secondaries like as soon as you lose interest but you already mained them previously.
Still waiting art of zero suit
