Always amazing to see how a single storm will wreck the entire energy supply in most parts of the US/CA. Yeah, putting cables into the ground is more expensive, but it's less likely to fail everytime a storm occurs.
Really... Not even statistics about your "insane" UPS... How long dit it needed to run and how much power did you draw from it in that time.... geezzzz
Clearly, at least they could have cut the power to it and show how much time their setup stay powered on. And I guess they wont make a tear down of it ;) too bad because as the outside of usual Eaton fit the price you pay, the inside is just.. really cheap.
I love how the guys on /r/sysadmin make it seem like you're trying to tell new IT professionals how to do their jobs. How dare someone run their own business their own way?!
Because they don't want to run a Generator 24/7. The only reason Terran had to use that UPS was because he needed to edit and get something off of the server. No one else was using it. Now if they're posting more than 1 videos a day and a power outage can cause problems with that then maybe they'll get a generator.
That kind of money just to grab some stuff off the server and go somewhere else to work doesn't sound worth it to me. Surely a cheaper UPS could have done the same thing.
Jeremy Crocker the point of it is that it can keep their servers running for several hours, most importantly, their security server running their cameras and other equipment.
Jay Rodriguez He’s running Floatplane full time, not an LTT employee anymore, essentially he’s got a new job which makes him way too busy to host videos
What about getting a generator to run essential systems during an outage? That way the UPS is just used to supply power during the time it takes for the generator to start and take over the load?
I work for a Fortune 500 .com and our backup UPSs are about three times that size, made by Liebert. When we replaced them last year, one of the maintenance guys gutted all the cells out of an old one and turned it into a tool locker. It's still being used. Built to hold that much weight, it's incredibly strong. Getting the new units into the server room was quite an adventure.
I love seeing updates on how everything is going with LTT very interesting seeing the progression from the bare warehouse to fully functional creation space !
Weight of the PW12S121K (in kg): 228.6. Current value of one gram of gold: $56.98 (Plastic Moon Money). Total value of a high-quality UPS during severe weather: -Priceless- $13,023,707.76
lol the timing of this video was perfect. We had a power-outage that lasted an hour last night. Burned through all of our UPS juice resulting in crashes for our network controllers, DHCP, DNS, email servers the whole nine yards. Took us 14 hours to get stuff back up and running.
Don't care what others think. I love these behind the scene videos. It gives a fun perspective. Plus when I get reviews and info, it feels like a friend is letting me know, not just some corporation. Should do these videos on occasion, maybe once or twice a month. Maybe a state of the channel plus a vlog.
Weird getting this recommended to me in 2019, but amazing how much has changed in that time, no more Luke, sets finished then changed/removed since then, all the expansion of the campus, things happen fast in your world guys.
I have a similar UPS (APC Symmetra LX 16KVa) We wired one outlet for each office into it in order to keep the workstations up. Then we programmed the UPS to wait until the batteries were down to 10% to shut down the servers / workstations. We can usually get about 3-4 hours of work out of it until it all shuts down.
Our work UPS is a bit smaller than that, but powers a dozen network switches, 9 servers, phone system (including all desk phones), Wi-Fi, alarm and fire systems, a few lights, and 11 workstations. Estimated runtime, 32 minutes.
This is probably a dumb question. But why not buy a backup generator for a few grand. That way you could power the whole office. And you need only a small battery to keep things going during the change over.
Not sure how often this is an issue, but an automatic whole office backup generator might have been cheaper than a monstrous UPS that eventually would run out of juice? In that configuration, your UPS provides unbroken power to key items until the generator kicks in.
I don't understand. You start talking about that huge battery but then only 1 PC turned on and you ended up moving to Luke's Parents' house. What's up with that?
Didn't notice that they managed to pull files off the server so they can edit somewhere else with power? Probably wanted to save power in the battery incase of another emergency. use your brain.
Because under half-load you have around half an hour to an hour time. It also runs servers off off that battery, they are like the lords of power consumption.
the issue they faced, and that needs to be fixed is the room got to hot, and caused the servers to auto shutdown due to temp. all servers have that safety feature, at an old it place i worked at if the server room reached anywhere near 80F all the servers would shut down.
One hour run time for 17k? Seems like a waste of fucking money. Like others have said, he should have gone with a generator and a small ups, with that they could power the whole building for days on diesel but that isn't "nerdy" enough for linus so he spent a fuckton of money on a product that doesn fuck all.
Luke's really good at playing that archery VR game and doing his normal talky stuff at the same time. Even with the proper spacial awareness to know to put his hands in the right place for the camera work. Well done.
For the spacial awareness, He probably got some help of a Guardian thing that let him see his "Play Space" in the vr headset, which is only visible in the HMD, not the PC screen.
+Rien Bijl not really we use those where I live plus ups and it sure as hell costs less than that monster ups they do need a backup generator it's good to have one around just in that one case and also can be used later down the road say they moved to a new area that is a bit remote where the power grid is less stellar it's important to have a secondary power solution specially for your main business companies where I live invest in booth ups and generators but I guess we can't call ltt a company

I grew up on a working farm in Michigan it is some of my happiest memories. we got hit with this terrible blizzard in 76 and it knocked out our power for a week. on a farm if you don't have power to work the pumps you don't have water. we had a lot of livestock that had to have water
I do power UPS and generator systems up here in Canada for entire engineering departments. Save your battery money and invest in a good Diesel generator. High end (true online) UPS's will filter "generator power" quite easily. You only need 10-30 minutes of battery power to "carry" you through short outages or brown-out's. Modern diesel generators are super quiet. Just use something bigger than a soda can for a fuel tank !!! :)
For everyone complaining about the expense of a UPS and why not a generator.... There are likely permits you need from the city as they can create a nuisance and you would need submit a request for it that can be debated on but the surrounding residences. This is normal for commercial applications. Also Some cities ban the use of a generator unless for specific applications for commercial premises. LoL. Generators also do not kick in instantly So regardless he would need a UPS to handle everything until a GEN can kick in and you need enough reserves for the GEN to kick on and reach needed capacity. These generators also normally do not produce good sin waves for electricity and can be SUPER expensive for ones that to or an inverter combo unit.
Because they have a lot of weather, and it wouldn't make sense to invest millions to billions of dollars to try and stop an occasional few hour power outage.
in germay we have a blackout only once like every 3years. and even a "short" power outage can do huge damage to the industry. we dont have tornadoes and stuff, but the weather can be nasty as well, like really nasty, people died

+quadrplax the problem with solar pannels is they are expensive compared to a generator system. And in my opinion less reliable as the amount of power that is generated is dependent on the weather. Trying to use them as backup power bad idea because if the main power is out it is a high probability it is out because of a storm. If there is a storm you probably have alot of cloud cover blocking most of the sun. So the solar panels aren't producing near enough power to help anyone. They also use up alot of space. I also don't know if you can back feed the grid in Canada. or if they will buy back your power you generate. Basicly I wouldn't buy Solar pannels for a backup power system. By the way your emergency lights and exit signs are not all working when the power was out this is many because when they were put in the batteries were not connected if you connect them with the batteries inside them you can have some more light in the office and in the studio space. So you needed a $17,000 UPS so you could transfer a few files to a laptop? Seems like overkill. No they needed a $17,000 UPS to keep 3 or 4 (I forget which) servers up for long enough after the power outage (which probably happened multiple hours before they got to the office) to get stuff off of them before shutting them down safely. That, and powering a laptop.
yeah those transmission lines from the power plant are buried. Those transformers are buried. Seriously.... think a little. There's a lot more to the power grid/system than the local residential buried lines.
In Canada (and the USA) the power grid is almost entirely above ground. The distances and low population density make buried cables prohibitively expensive.

Read the first letter of every name (:
Well, it depends were it is and how bad the storm was. From the looks of things it was quite bad, if it takes out a few power poles or at worse a transformer, power can be out for a whole day. I live south west of England and we have lost power for a day before thanks to bad weather...
It would be interesting to see some tech quickies on how electricity is generated and distributed. I work for a power company and I can tell you that many people just take their grid for granted and do not really understand how electricity works. "I plug this thing into the wall and it works." None of our cool gadgets and computers work without electricity and it is probably the most important tech discovery of all time.
AVeryHappyTeddyBear do you want my PC specs to justify my enthusiasm to why I'm subscribed to Linus Tech Tips (BTW:i7 4790K,GTX 980ti,32 GBs ram and a custom water cooling loop)

So.....how exactly did the UPS help? You left the office to find power elsewhere. The whole point was to keep working regardless of loss of power. Heck, I have only ~$6k in UPS equipment that runs my servers and workstations for around 3 hours under full load. The phones, security and network equipment run for 10 hours.
hey linus, there is such thing as an emergency backup generators, our auto shop runs off a 30,000 watt generac, runs our plasma cutters, air compressors, mig/tig welders, car lifts, all at the same time.
Have you seen those things at DIY car washes that hold the water hose up above and swivel around as you go around your car? Thought about something like those on the ceiling for the cords to the VR headset and such? Would keep it from being under foot.
I'd beg to differ Linus. Most, if not all of the components have gold in them. So that thing, for the most part, is worth its weight in gold. Literally, and figuratively.
Wondering if their security cameras would be offline too if they have a power outtage. If however they also run from the UPS, I doubt the UPS is gonna last over a day anyway if the outtage takes longer.
You guys should buy a diesel backup generator with a secondary battery power inverter (so that power remains while the generator starts up) so that even in the event of a large scale power outage all the power remains, and not just for mission critical servers.
And that's why you don't buy a massive UPS and instead by one that can feed your servers for 1-2 hours and a small generator to fire up until the power is back. If you do buy a massive UPS you buy one that's big enough to keep all the lights and PC's running for 1-2 hours until your generator is online.

Is having a Power outage good at the best time?
Why not?
Of course.
Slipping or tripping into someone working on a bench/table saw and the power fails at the right moment could be considered good at the best time, no?
hellsgate09
Yes but you'd still fall into a table saw, instead of a quick death you get the agonizing pain of gravity plus saw blade O.o
So instead of the table saw's safety features kicking in (for those that have them anyway), you get savaged by the momentum of the saw blade?

No they needed a $17,000 UPS to keep 3 or 4 (I forget which) servers up for long enough after the power outage (which probably happened multiple hours before they got to the office) to get stuff off of them before shutting them down safely. That, and powering a laptop.
Still overkill. For that much they could have gotten a smaller UPS and an actual generator and kept the whole office going.
Power outage by a wind storm? Aren't the power cables burried in the ground?
yeah those transmission lines from the power plant are buried. Those transformers are buried. Seriously.... think a little. There's a lot more to the power grid/system than the local residential buried lines.
The power plants are buried. The houses are buried. Linus' office is buried- I have no idea what I'm saying. :D
UK = 90% buried lines.
North America = 40% buried lines.
Gotta love America
In Canada (and the USA) the power grid is almost entirely above ground. The distances and low population density make buried cables prohibitively expensive.

What camera did you use to shoot this?
How come the power outage lasts so long? ... I mean, if we get in Europe power outage, we are back in like within a minute.
Well, it depends were it is and how bad the storm was. From the looks of things it was quite bad, if it takes out a few power poles or at worse a transformer, power can be out for a whole day. I live south west of England and we have lost power for a day before thanks to bad weather...
We had a power outage like that, but it lasted only like 8 hours... and it happened like a decade-or-so ago.
Cuz we have capitalist pigs who don't care too much about us
yep, last time i remember our power going out it was around 4-6hours also in south west of england
we dont know what caused the outage, it it was due to dowbed power lines they need to be replaced
In case of such power failure the emergency services would be here within 4-5 hours running diesel generators. Don't you have that in Canada?
i am first. i can die happily now😂
R.I.P.
It would be interesting to see some tech quickies on how electricity is generated and distributed. I work for a power company and I can tell you that many people just take their grid for granted and do not really understand how electricity works. "I plug this thing into the wall and it works."
None of our cool gadgets and computers work without electricity and it is probably the most important tech discovery of all time.
the first time to dislike a linus tech video just because its kind of useless
Just like your contributions to society thus far.
AVeryHappyTeddyBear do you want my PC specs to justify my enthusiasm to why I'm subscribed to Linus Tech Tips (BTW:i7 4790K,GTX 980ti,32 GBs ram and a custom water cooling loop)
+loka swafy Playing Minecraft, bought by iBuyPower.
+AVeryHappyTeddyBear you can have a good PC without being rich, you just have to be smart
AVeryHappyTeddyBear I'm not rich i gathered this PC over 6 and a half months by working and as Benjamin Columbus said you don't need to be rich to have as good of a PC as I have and I did build the PC my self it wasn't prebuilt (BTW i just didn't change my profile Picture since I first made a UA-cam account)
Aw man. I was almost hoping there would be a server problem. Those videos are entertaining.
What a terrible mismatch of footage! Why upload? Better still why did you waste my time with this nonsense?!
Why watch?
go leave a dislike
the video is a fun vlog
What a terrible youtube comment! Why even post? Better yet, why bother even watching?!
+Ayinde Horton You have to watch the video to know what's in the fucking video you goon
How long was the power down and how much percent was left at the UPS?
Still pretty good given the circumstances
The high production quality never goes down!
So.....how exactly did the UPS help? You left the office to find power elsewhere. The whole point was to keep working regardless of loss of power. Heck, I have only ~$6k in UPS equipment that runs my servers and workstations for around 3 hours under full load. The phones, security and network equipment run for 10 hours.
did brandon ever use that broll set?
hey linus, there is such thing as an emergency backup generators, our auto shop runs off a 30,000 watt generac, runs our plasma cutters, air compressors, mig/tig welders, car lifts, all at the same time.
0:33 What's up, blazers, Lethal Linus here. Let's get ROIGHT into the TECH NEWS!
Wondering if their security cameras would be offline too if they have a power outtage. If however they also run from the UPS, I doubt the UPS is gonna last over a day anyway if the outtage takes longer.
Is the battery rechargeable?
@LinusTechTips you should do office tour video to see the office now. Like the WHOLE office!
what is the ups you use? I know someone who owns a bunch of server equipment and stores temp files on ram disks so power problems are baaaadddd.
Why not a diesel generator?
You guys should buy a diesel backup generator with a secondary battery power inverter (so that power remains while the generator starts up) so that even in the event of a large scale power outage all the power remains, and not just for mission critical servers.
(do you have a backup generator yet)
Worst time for a power outage is when you are binge watching linus videos.
And that's why you don't buy a massive UPS and instead by one that can feed your servers for 1-2 hours and a small generator to fire up until the power is back. If you do buy a massive UPS you buy one that's big enough to keep all the lights and PC's running for 1-2 hours until your generator is online.
Working for Linus is not a job, its an adventure.
You back into those metal sculptures in that VR room, you are gonna *feel* it.
I have the same couch as Linus in his VR room. Life goals.
