- Yes I know...G-Darius has a home port! But G-Darius Ver.2 DOES NOT! Well at least not at the time of making this video. There was news that Rev.2 was going to be remade in HD just like G-Darius...but it's not out yet! So take that lolol...but seriously G-Darius Ver.2 may very well by my favorite shmup of all time...but its seriously the hardest shoot em up game I have EVER played personally. Retro gaming quarter munching incoming!
(Note...I changed the name of this to "Now Ported Playlist" because between making this and showing this...Ver 2 got ported! but it's not like I am going to just discard the episode!)

Hello and welcome to "The Unported Playlist"
So we decided to extend this playlist from 10 games to does it even matter what the count is anymore? lol it's a lot!
On this episode we are looking at G-Darius Ver.2 from Taito! Ver.2 was a re-release of the original shmup to change the game up a bit...mostly by making it hard as nails difficult. But Darius has always had both amazing visuals, gameplay and most importantly MUSIC...and G-Darius is retrogaming gold in all of these departments! Plus Ver 2 was never really ported to PS1 or PS2...but it's now available in an HD remake so thats fun!

if people haven't played G-Darius, the M2 G-Darius HD port is the best version and even includes version 2. it has gadgets, training mode, achievements and more. highly recommended.
Yes that’s out now. Funny enough when I uploaded this it wasn’t yet
I believe Ver2 is part of the Darius HD collection.
it is. Thats why I changed the title and description / mentioned in commentary. Went from unported to ported between making and premiering lol
I wasn't sure it was either I've barely touched HD
it happened between the time I uploaded this and showed it...first time ever!
The sound effects are very Star Foxy. Now that would've been a cool pairing, Taito and Nintendo. A Star Fox SHMUP would've been neat.
That would be a pretty interesting mash up
A 2.5D Starfox sounds amazing. Always thought Nintendo should do a Mario Shmup as well. Imagine some of the power ups.
Maybe one day!
Check out Taito's 1989 arcade game Night Striker to see Taito's take of Star Fox meets Afterburner lol (ok Star Fox hadn't come out yet but you know what i mean). And avoid videos of the Sega CD, PS1 and Saturn ports, those ports run at 30fps and the graphics are infinitely worse to make matters even worse.
I certainly will always remember G-Darius from the demo of the PlayStation port that I played on the demo discs that came with the German PlayStation Zone and PlayStation Fun Magazines in 1999, which was how I also knew Taito ever since then. While I was and never will be a die-hard fan of the shmup genre, given that they are indeed "balls to the wall" as far as difficulty for each of the games is concerned, I do have a soft spot for this game, as well as other shmups like Pulstar, Blazing Star, the R-Type series and Einhänder (Yes, it's always pronnounced as "Ainhender" just as the Japanese themselves pronnounce it!). Yes, even the Macross game on the Famicom featured on several NES/Famicom multicarts and Chinese-made NES clone consoles which I got to play one of them when I was little, I do have a soft spot for it too.
Sure, the only reason I really cared about the genre was mainly due to the reeling experience I had with this incredibly-obscure (and rather bland and lackluster) PAL-only shmup on the PlayStation made by the company famous for WipEout that, as a proud yankee like you, you've obviously never even heard of, called "Retro Force".
These days though, I care more about Japanese games (mostly Mahjong and certain dating sim games with mini-games within, such as Magical Date, also from Taito) and even games on Steam coming from China of all places, many of which have pretty ladies within them that I truly adore.
Einhander is a game that deserves more credit than it gets. Always a fun time. But yeah G-Darius is a banger. Never knew it was on a demo disc
@@VideoGameEsoterica In North America, the demo of G-Darius was included on Demo Disc 14 of the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine.
Learned something new today :)
you are correct it would be a waste tossing this video due to recent events, people will still be unfamiliar to ver.2 and some will like to know more about it from an experienced perspective
This is true. It’s a deep cut
It wouldn't be Darius without that '70s sci-fi soundtrack
The music is key
Love G Darius, my fave of the series!!👌
Ver 2 is absolutely brutal though!🤣
The boss formation attacks are so varied that learning the patterns can be very tough!
Yes it takes a long time to memorize anything
My fav is Darius 2 w/the triple screen and i also like how on Sega Saturn you can manually zoom the screen in and out while playing
The double and triple screen Taito stuff is legit fun
Miss this game
Super easy to play it again
Great vid, and an awesome game!
Appreciate it :)!
I just got G Darius today and it's a really good shmup. It has a bit of a slow start since it starts out really easy, but after viewing footage of ver. 2, I think I'm okay with that.
Haha yeah try Ver. 2. Starts out brutal
Hellsinker and G Darius are both fighting for my top 2 shmup since top 1 is already taken.
whats 1?
@@VideoGameEsoterica Sora
interesting
I have the Darius Cozmic Collection for switch, I like the Darius shooters they're pretty awesome
they are all legit. I don't think there is a "bad" game in the entire franchise
Great series that seems to have fallen by the wayside over the years. If someone’s looking to get into these games, I’d suggest Darius Twin. You’ll be able to 1cc that one reliably after some practice.
I need to play more CS. I haven’t in some years
Darius Twin is alright but hasn't aged well and it was the first SNES shmup I ever played (unless you want to count HyperZone). But... Darius Gaiden and G-Darius are hands down the two best games in the Darius series and the recent console ports of them are very beginner friendly with save states and training modes. Not to mention G-Darius HD finally got a patch that added in the Version 2 update which includes Beginner mode. Darius Gaiden is definitely the easier of the two games though and I'd recommend that first for newcomers.
I’d love to see this as a double screen.
the three screen Taito stuff is still my fav
I love me a good shmup. And yet for some reason I haven't played a lot of the Darius series. I have dabbled in it a bit over the years, just not a whole lot. I need to fix that.
Def gotta play them. One of my fav franchises
I´ve played a lot in my PS1.
It’s a great port for sure
more "now ported" episodes when? 😏
Lol no new series!
i wish they had turned down the volume on the shot sounds
I get that. Sometimes those sound effects can get a touch grating / hide the awesome music
I play this on g-net. great whatever version 🥂
I still need to pick a G-Net up at some point in time
Lovely looking game but I think I would die to much to get into any sort of a rhythm LOL
Haha you learn it eventually
I've played harder, Salamander/Life force is pretty brutal and R-Type, any R-Rype.
Not that this is a cake walk, I've barely played any G-Darius HD but I did BS my way through it on MAME. Not sure if I've played Ver. 2 or not.
R-Type is a touch slower which for me feels easier. But we all have our own things for sure
Darius Burst is pretty hard too. There are some Chronicles mode missions that are absolutely brutal
I have a confession...I have a copy of Dariusburst CS Limited Edition on my shelf...I've yet to open lol
@@VideoGameEsoterica it's hard I just sold off my PS4 copy as I no longer have a PS4.
Darius Burst EX is a little different from that version and still hard as balls
😍
:)
Some of the people that worked on g-darius went to form their own company called g.rev you might have heard of them they made games like Doki Doki Idol Star Seeker border down under defeat senko no ronde aka wartech Mamorukun Curse! They also helped co-develped ikaruga and gradius v
Yep def heard of them. All fun games. Except Ikaruga...that game breaks my brain
@@VideoGameEsoterica yes I agree 👍 I'm also not a really big fan of ikaruga to be honest
I love the idea of it...I just never get into the groove
You can really see G.Rev's DNA in this game.
Can you believe I used to have Border Down and sold it off?
Not that I regret doing it that game was brtual.
that makes 3 with Ikaruga and I've bought and rebought that game many times. XBOX, Gamecube, Switch and I still have the Dreamcast Original.
