      What a fantastic transformation!!! Quick question... Did you dilute your polyurathane at all???

      @@rlbrown65 thank you! Yes we strain and diluted it but not by much ☺️

    These pieces turned out beautiful.. I love black paint with richly stained (or oiled) wood accents. If I may make a suggestion - using screws as drawer stops will cause damage to the drawers in the long run. It would be worth the few dollars to purchase a package of proper drawer stops to replace the missing ones.

    I don't usually prefer vintage pieces being painted, but this is beautiful. I love how you preserve some of the wood, and the black accent looks really classy.

    From stripping paint on old cars over many uyears I have found it works faster when you place cling film over the stripper as it doesnt evaporate as fast especially in warmer weather also creates less mess and you can use your time more efficiently

    • @hollysgarage
      @hollysgarage  7 місяців тому

      Haha you noticed it was drying up on me 😂 I usually do cling film when I’m leaving it longer than an hour but you’re right it would stay more wet with some on there. Thanks for sharing your expertise! Can you use these regular strippers on cars too or do you guys use a car/metal specific stripper?

    Best to use a triangular piece to repair veneer rather than square, shows up less. Great save !

    As far as I know, you don't need to do a lead test on stained 1980's retro furniture. Just really old paint finishes contain lead.

    • @hollysgarage
      @hollysgarage  7 місяців тому +2

      Thanks! Still learning my way around dating pieces and finishing techniques over the decades. I read somewhere that stains and other finishes can also contain lead but not if manufactured after the 80s. Still crossing my fingers I don’t accidentally get a pink swab some day 😂

    • @confusedandsleepless

      @@hollysgarage My guess is 1980's based on the materials used, & the retro styling. There were "modern" furniture manufacturers in the '80s that cranked out a lot of streamlined designs reminiscent of 1950's MCM styles. I think of them as the precursor to IKEA. I only know this because I was born 60+ years ago! Your makeover turned out great, you made an awesome profit, & kept usable furniture out of the dump, so keep doing what you're doing, & have fun w/it!

      @@hollysgarageI support you testing any furniture item. I, too, have read that some finishes may have lead from MCM style stuff. Better safe than sorry.

    What happens if a furniture piece does end up having lead? Can it still be sanded and painted??

    • @hollysgarage
      @hollysgarage  7 місяців тому

      Technically yes you can still sand it but just know all the dust and fumes flying in the air are extremely toxic, I would probably suggest not taking the chance of being exposed and try to find a new piece 👍
