This series has been invaluable in helping in helping me set-up my UDM Pro - Unifi OS has changed a bit since the video (why do they keep moving stuff around!) but the series is so clear it wasn't an issue. Thanks Chris
It looks like Unifi listened to the complaints and now allows both local and cloud login. I had no problems in setting it up within minutes. Thanks for running through the setup. Much appreciated Chris.
Chris, you mention in this video that you don't think the USG or UDM is suitable for business. And Tom Lawrence says the same. Could you perhaps do a video where you show some of the features that UDM/USG business users are missing out of? We have a four year old USG Pro4 in the office, and it's about time to replace it. We haven't really seen a problem with it, but maybe that's because we don't know about the things that we could have done. It would be great to have an explanation, so we could choose the right option.
Really got me started quickly. But I have version 3.0 of the OS and there are considerable differences between your video and what I see. So I would like to see this level of video for the newer operating system. Overall a really good video.
I think the best way I can describe the UDM-PRO (as the owner of one) is a router for enthusiasts. Currently I only have that, a NanoHD AP and a G3 Instant camera; may not sound like much, but that may be just what the needs call for.
I would say the EdgeMax line are far superior as a enthusiast (although not as polished + integrated), VPN's are a bust on the UDM-Pro it doesn't have the horse power or features to do any sort of VPN solution beyond a simple click site-to-site L2TP VPN. UDM-Pro would be a good Edge device in a remote site if the software + features were better e.g. supporting OpenVPN / Wireguard etc.
Chris, thank you for doing this series. I recently purchased a UDM Pro and am excited to learn how to get the most from it, as well as learn more about setting up a network.
Nice, I got a UDM, 24 port POE, NVR, access points, and cameras installed today, new build home. Internet goes in next week then I plan to set up. I will be watching allot of setup video's. Great stuff, keep them coming
Awesome topic, Chris, thanks! That's a super useful for the wide youtube audience! A few ideas for future videos: 1) Creation/modification of networks w/ and w/o VLAN (main, IOT, camera, etc.); 2) Creation/modification of wireless networks (main, guest, IOT, etc.); 3) DPI configuration, how does it affect performance; 4) IPS / IDS configuration, how does it affect performance; 5) Client device configuration (fix IP, etc).
I would like to see a video about setting up a hotspot using the advanced features. Like how to set up and control each user with the voucher system and UI payment gateway on a splash screen.
Can't wait till the next video, I would like to see how to change the IP address for the UDM, and I would like detailed explanation for the firewall rules. Thank you Chris, keep the good work.
Something about Chris, but I hit the like button before it even loads. Maybe the music reminds me of when I first started learning about this stuff because of his videos
If you own a Dream Machine (R2D2 Capsule) You can follow along 100% with videos 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7. I just bought a DMP and followed this guide to set it up, and then again with the Dream Machine so I could have it configured for the friend I sold it to.
Thanks Chris! It would be great to see how to setup a VPN into the network when you are outside of your network. Also, setting up 2 separate networks (VLANs) where only certain devices can communicate between them (firewall rules). What would also be nice is how to setup SNMP to detect when there is a power outage and for a device to shutdown the router.
Thanks for the config support dude. I finally ordered and installed the UDM SE. The UDM SE setup is virtually identical to this series. The new UDM SE replaced 4 other Ubiquiti components. The FW rules w/VLAN how-tos were critical me for within this series. My G3 cameras are now accessible without the hoops, pitfalls & SSH requirements of the UVC-NVR. My NAS VLAN is truly isolated from all other VLANs. Finally.
I would really like seeing an updated firewall guide covering separate guest and IoT vlans as part of this series! Your last vlan video is still helpful, but out of date due to UI updates. Thanks!
@@Ky-vv8nj exactly what do you think changed in 2 months in the UDM PRO dream machine? the setup etc in the videos wouldn't change that's why its a setup series.....

This is great, Chris. Your videos are always fun, interesting, engaging and helpful. But... This one is three years old, and so much has changed in the interface and available features since it was shot. Really struggled on the IoT VLAN setup and FW rules. Finally gave up on that part before I ended up mucking up the rules so bad that my primary WAN didn't work. I'd buy you a beer (or a six pack) if you'd refresh this bad boy. 🙂
I would like to see you use a cell phone tethered to WAN2 for fail-over. Admittedly I just want a solution to the tethering aspect that is simpler and smaller than a PC with ICS turned on with a tethering app.
Perfect timing of the series - i purchased UDM pro and uDM 16 port switch before lockdown and have delayed installation until my new fibre service is available which should be in the next fortnight. Keep up the good work
I would very much like to see a guide to install UDM Pro, update it, and then import backup file from software unifi controller (incl how to proper shutdown old controller). As always a super nice video Chris !
Please demonstrate how to create a view only Unifi Protect user. To put it over the top a demonstration of how to limit which cameras a view only UniFi Protect user can access would be great. Thanks for all the content you have created. Keep up the good work.
Just wanted to give you a big thank you for this series. I just spent the weekend setting up my network following your videos step by step. Excellent information!
Looking forward to this. I'd be interested to go over the two different user interfaces. I completely setup my UDM Pro using the new UI. When done, I quickly realized a few things were missing and the old UI seems as polished if not more (except the dashboard, which is better on the new UI). As a new user this would have been helpful to have someone go through this.
Great to have a home setup series. I’d like to know more about how best to setup the network for IoT devices, especially those with the 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi that are troublesome to connect. Also how best to see if the cabling is performing at the expect speed. Noticed there’s some colour coding with some orange connection to one of my access points. Best practice tips always welcome.

Great videos! I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer for... I'm thinking maybe it's a hole in the Unifi line that needs filling! I have 3 main needs... 1) dual internet with failover (and hopefully load balancing in a future software update). For this I believe I need to use the WAN connection and one of the 10G SFP ports in the UDM... which leaves only 1 x 10g port remaining. 2) I need to be able to connect my PC and my Synology NAS via 10g connections (that's 2 devices, but I only have 1 port remaining... so I guess I need another switch). ANd 3) I need at least 5 POE ports for 3 cameras and 2 access points. Are you aware of a switch that I can pair with the UDM pro that would handle all that? O only need about 5 or 6 additional regular 1g port connections. Thanks in advance if you've got the answer! :)
Love this series! I'm about to setup a new Unify network at home using an UDR and wonder if this is still all relevant or if you recommend doing anything different in 2024? Maybe you have another video covering this already? Thanks for all the good info here and on your channel!
I moved Unifi Controller from one location to another and tried to setup with static IP. I have connected by RJ45 cable with ISP modem and WAN port of Unifi controller. I have logged in Unifi controller with my existing login credentials where I can update with new IP as I have already configured with old IP? How can I connect my laptop with Unifi controller and change WAN IP? Please kindly advise.

Does the UDM Pro have NAT? Currently I have my ISP modem/router combo set in pass-through mode. I then feed the WAN from the ISP modem (with a public IP) in to my Asus router which then handles the NAT for my home network. This way I avoid double NAT.
At 6:46 you mention that you are "not allow a local login". Up to this point your video does not appear to be connected to the Internet (it may be but it isn't clear that it is). (ubnt/ubnt doesn't work anymore?)
I looks like the EdgeMax platform especially for home use which built around super affordable EdgeRouter X is pretty much de facto dead. They replaced it with UISP platform, but it pretty much looks like it went direction of Unifi for WISPs and no longer features as robust OS as EdgeOS which built on VyattaOS.
Old video but I m going to five it a try. DId you have to passthrough the connection from your modem by converting it to bridge mode to the UDM? If yes, does this mean that there is a specific option inside the menu where you fill in pppoe credentials of your ISP?

I have a current ubiquiti unifi system using a cloudkey and am going to replace it with the UDM-Pro. How may I set up my existing network connections so that I can plug the WAN port of the UDM-Pro into the current network for updating and setting up the new equipment? My experience with computers is all on the hardware side not with networking and software. Now I am retired and trying to learn new things :).
What hardware do you recommend for a business? Preferably something that works well with Ubiquiti products as I've gone all-in and can't afford to redo my entire setup.

It's also possible to connect to a UDP pro using your phone. Then no network changes to your pc/laptop are needed.

Hi. Great video, can't wait to watch the others. I would like to see in-depth details on unifi protect.
What hardware do you recommend for a business? Preferably something that works well with Ubiquiti products as I've gone all-in and can't afford to redo my entire setup.
I am trying to set my UDM Pro up with my Static Ip. How would i do that?
