    To Kohl Wrobleski- To your questions: (1) Yes, the follow up videos at 1, 2, 3, and 4 months are all of these fry as they grew. and (2) Actually, I purposely limit my females from breeding. I allow only a few females to breed at any one time, so that I do not become overrun with fry.

She was the one that got me getting guppies. Before i had one guppy a year ago. The fancy female gave birth at night i woke up only finding one guppy fry. Im rasing it in a half gallon tank the only place i have for it. Its name is Lucky.Hes two days old now. He wont wanna eat fish flakes he only want peas. gotta use the bottle cap for food if you touch it with your fingers it goes back in the bottle adding moisture to the flakes making them rancid also anything on your fingers will be spread and it can mess with the gas exchange by adding a film ontop of the water

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому

      +gravedigr12 I have very dry hands, so very little moisture gets onto the food. Nevertheless, you bring up a very good point. What's unsaid in my video is that I keep the old canisters so that whenever I purchase a new canister, I apportion about a month's supply out, and feed the fish from that apportioned canister. I also keep the new portion closed and in a cool dry place in the house. Also, if it's raining heavily, and the air is rather humid, I don't open the container. And if my hands are wet, I either return later, when my hands are dry before pinching food out of the container. I've been to friend's houses and watch them feed their fish. From this, I know that there is very little regard for keeping fish food as fresh as possible. For me raising guppies, using the bottle cap will simply not work, I need to crush the flakes fine for feeding fry, and even adults. I actually talk about this in another video of mine specifically on feeding guppies. Great comment!

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому +2

      I don't use filters. The reason I can get away without filters is that I do not stock too many fish per tub. I limit number of fish to approximately 1 guppy per gallon of tub size. And I do frequent partial to full water changes. I have a past video on cleaning tubs.

      I haven't had experience with either of those ailments. Other than the gouramis (shown in a couple of recent videos), I haven't purchased any fish from a pet store since 2009. Therefore, there were no fish disease that came into my population. Even the gouramis, I quarantined them for a week. In one of my sales videos, I show how I sterilize the bucket used to bring the my fish to the pet store. I do this because the pet stores will sometimes dip their net into my bucket. I do what I can to minimize a fish pathogen from infecting my population. So far, so good.

    Hello! My guppy gave birth about 3 months about and I decided to keep 2 fry, and I sold the rest to a local store. Currently, they're kept in my 20g tank in a breeder net to keep them away from the adult fish, I'm afraid that my black skirt tetras will try to eat them. My problem is that they're not growing fast at all, even though it's been about 3 months. Do you know if the small breeder net (~.5g) is hindering their growth at all?

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  7 років тому

      Adults emit hormones that inhibit the growth of fry. I raise my fry in their own tubs. They grow way faster in their own tubs. I don't even mix broods, because even fry slightly older will make younger fry not grow. Once juveniles are about 2 months, then they can be kept with slightly older juveniles without slowing their growth.

    What size tank is good to keep them in

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  8 років тому

      If you have say 30 to 40 fry, you could get by with a 10 gallon tank... this way the fry can find the food easily. BUT... do partial water changes at least twice a week, about 20% to 30% changes. It really does make a ton of difference on their growth. Within a month, you'll need to move them to a larger tank, say 20 gallons. Continue with the water changes.

    how does the guppy fry get oxygen inside the tub ? Also is it water too hot for the guppy fry leaving out of the sun?

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  9 років тому +2

      ***** These tubs have much larger surface areas than glass-sided aquariums of similar gallon volume. Therefore, it's enough so accomplish the oxygen absorption and carbon dioxide excessing that is needed, for the amount of fish I have in each of the tubs.
      The water does get quite warm in the Sun, especially now with Summer approaching when the air temperature is already warm. The surface of the water is around mid-80's °F, but if I put my hand down deeper into the water, the water near the bottom is noticeably cooler, and the fish will hang out there. My tubs receive about 4 to 5 hours of direct sunlight, outside of this 4 to 5 hours, the tubs are shaded by my house, and some trees. In the Summer, I wouldn't position the tubs in locations where they'd receive more sunlight than this.

      If you avoid overcrowding your fish, and don't allow your fish to multiply uncontrollably, you can keep them in tubs without a filter indefinitely. Allow one gallon for every adult guppy.

      Kaimuki Backyard Is a 1.5 gallon ok for while they are growing (Only thing I could afford) and then its into my 10 gallon tank, all I need is for them to grow to be big enough to mate with adult males. ( I have 5 adult males and no females) what size would that be. Also how fast would they grow in the 1.5 gallon tank, it has shelter for them.
      _lh3.googleusercontent.com/DlozZqKv68SoIZ2rsp12HD4F0DFGg6WsH5M5fFAhdtLPkMFAvmqtY_cXFK6FEY6phZ8Qfg3Fsg_

      @kaimukibackyard148  7 років тому

      1.5 gallon will not house fry for very long, and unless you change water nearly every day, the fry will grow slowly. I personally wouldn't attempt to raise fry in a tank or other container that small. Here's another approach you might consider: Find a another home for your 5 adult males, and use your 10 gallon tank for the fry you have. I cyclically do this. I sell off all my adult guppies and keep only the fry. At the moment, I personally have 12 adult guppies. I'm waiting for fry to be born, then I'll be getting rid of all adults, so that I can devote all my tub space to growing fry. I am working on a new video on this to be finished in a couple weeks. Also, I have a past video where I got rid of all adult guppies: ua-cam.com/video/vHr3tDVOg7I/v-deo.html

      Kaimuki Backyard I cant afford another tank as well, because this is for my science experiment where I breed male guppies and female endlers but I could only buy them (Endlers) at 30 days old. And I went over my budget already so maybe could I get a male endler and a female guppy and if my endler fry arent grown uet could I put those fry in the same tank? Or would that be overcrowded?

    • @kaimukibackyard148

      Adult guppies cannot eat the dragonfly larvae after the larvae grow large. You need to break the system down, OR just wait it out. The larvae will morph into adults and fly away.

    • @kaimukibackyard148

      Hard to advise you given the limited information. But one clue would be if you seen one of your female guppies become slimmer. You'll need to have noticed this during the first day or two though, because females guppies have a way of becoming plump again, within one or two days after giving birth.

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  9 років тому +2

      alex chuck Yes, once the fry are about a month old, I will be using the steps in this video: ua-cam.com/video/D-MwNzGMjU0/v-deo.html to siphon debris from these two nursery tubs, say every week or so. I do not run any filters on these tubs. I don't siphon at this stage because since the fry are small, I may accidentally suck them up in the siphon. Because the fry are small, and they are in relatively large tubs, the water easily stays at a very good quality for at least the first month. Your question is a VERY good one, and I was hoping someone would ask it. I wanted to address this in a comment (exactly like this), rather than make the video any longer.

      alex chuck I sell them infrequently, and only in my local area. I've never shipped plants because agricultural rules here make it quite an involved process. You are much better off purchasing water lilies from any on of numerous sources that regularly ship water lilies. And because water lilies are climate specific, these companies websites' advise you to which types will thrive in your temperature zone. Good luck.

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  9 років тому

      Emelda Hanim I believe most spine problems are the result of inherited genes-- a trip to any pet store reveals many guppies with crooked spines. I would definitely avoid purchasing these if your intent is keep and raise their fry. My original Sunset Micariff guppies, back in 2009, had straight spines when viewed from the top, and nicely tapered shape when viewed from the side. With every generation, I carefully select which ones to breed.

      Kaimuki Backyard so how how to avoid it?

    • @kaimukibackyard148
      @kaimukibackyard148  9 років тому

      Emelda Hanim You'll need to scrutinize the fish you purchase. When selecting fish in the pet store, look at them from the sides, and also from the top. Avoid guppies with any sign of crookedness in their spine. The females will probably come already pregnant, so with first few births, examine the fry carefully. If any show signs of spine crookedness, keep them separate and do not use for breeding.
