718 Spyder is the better canyon car over 991 or 992 GT3. Also, I find it interesting that not many people bag on the GT3 for its similarly long gearing-over 80 mph in 2nd gear in 992 GT3 with 6MT.
I have a 718 Spyder. It is PEAK PORSCHE for the money. The manual transmission is fantastic. Reviewers like this don’t own one, and don’t know what they are talking about. Just have to somehow find something to complain about.
Your critiques of the long gearing are warranted, gearing is way too long. Also agree with the exhaust note, but that’s cheaper to fix with an aftermarket exhaust. But the shifter, the suspension, and the steering rack were all taken from the 991.2 GT3. All of which YOU Complemented on the GT3 but not the Spyder?!?! was a bit confused considering they’re the same parts…. Regardless solid video.

This is my favorite Porsche. It's just so damn stunning, but I do wish the gears were shorter. And, it would've been nice if it was easier to put the roof up and down though :( Matt Farah’s spec is peak Porsche Lordy lord
As an owner, the roof is a non issue. It takes about 30 seconds. Slightly annoying if you’re using it as a daily but as a weekend car it’s well worth the tradeoff for the look.

The gearing hate is so tired by now. There are many cars that have similar gearing but somehow the GT4/Spyder are the only cars where it’s constantly brought up. A GT3 has similarly long gears and it’s rarely a topic. I’ve owned a 981 Spyder for 4 years and the gearing is not an issue. You can shift into 1st at 35 if you desire and on a tight canyon road you’re constantly shifting between 1st and 2nd if you want. On a faster canyon road I use 2nd, 3rd, and 4th regularly.
Always Porsche (Boxster) for me, there is no substitute.. If it's a weekend fun car I would take the Spyder.. If it's more of a daily I would go GTS 4.0 (much less hassle with roof).. If budget is a thing I would go for a older Porsche 981 GTS or S.. Or 982(718) base Boxster if you do not mind the sound of the 4-cilinder boxer (I like the deep rumble)..
The problem with the shifter is the knob. It's too light and plastic. With simply replacing the knob with a weighted one and setting it lower it feels very mechanical. The long gearing has been over complained for years now. It's not that bad and in fact I prefer it to gearing that is too short.
I really enjoyed your review without the typical Porsche hype and over dramatisation, I drove one and was left somewhat disappointed although I still liked it.. As for seats, bang on, look nice but not necessary in a road car.
I have a CGTS and had a 981S. Driven a 981 GT4. I'd go CGTS. Better motor, mechanical updates, warranty. Just get it with the SPASM, not PASM and it will pull double-duty as a track or GT car with ease.
Exactly. I'm kind of tired of the "2nd gear is too long" criticism by reviewers who don't take them to tracks/roads with a lot of low to medium speed curves and/or long straights.
its a high torque engine, the gearing is super nice. and if you want to go fast you can go fast to 8000 rmp. valves open after 3800 rmp, nice, nobody drives a car like this to the red line all the time, i have OAP akrapovic, its redicilously loud above 4000 rpm xD in the review he is driving roads around 40 mph, offcourse this porsche is too fast, you cant use the shifter, it can do 300 kmp, on these roads your better of in a swift sport, or miata nd.
If there's no aftermarket valve controller the over axle pipe won't be noticeable below 4k RPM because the exhaust valves are locked closed between 1200~ and 3800rpm no matter if you have PSE on or off.
They trade blows in certain aspects. Z06 engine and overall performance are way more exciting. Spyder steering and overall chassis balance are more natural and communicative, but the car comparatively lacks drama.
Appreciate the review, and I like this channel overall. But I think we’re in an era now where there’s a lot of cork-sniffing and nit-picking of great cars. I owned a 718 GT4 manual as my daily driver and put 37k miles on it over 3 years. Not once while driving it did I think, “this experience is imperfect and leaving me wanting more”. In the context of the overall experience, the gearing was a nonissue. I could have spent my energy lamenting one or two things versus enjoying the car and appreciating that such a piece of engineering was still being made. I chose the latter, and it was a fucking blast, every day. If you can afford one of these cars, buy it, and drive the soul out of it.
Too much time lately in front-engine cars with short shift linkages? I have a 987.2 Boxster and it has a pretty good gearbox. But its predecessor was an S2000 and the Honda definitely won the "better gearbox" comp. Shorter linkages just have an advantage that is hard to overcome.
There's a fix fo the gearbox in the form of shorter 2-5 gears. A single mass flywheel is de rigueur too. With that, an x-pipe exhaust, LT headers and a tune, who needs a Spyder RS?!
You take what you can find. I was offered the GTS 4.0, and the roof going up and down at 30mph is not to be missed. Its a keeper. It howls and goes exactly where you want it. I also want an electric one some day. My electric bmw is nice because it doesn't use any damn gas.
If it's your only car period then a GT4 or Spyder could get very annoying especially with buckets. If it's not the only vehicle then pony up for the GT4/Spyder for sure if you like spirited driving. They're just more dialed in. But there's not a TON in it as they are still pretty similar.

Name a fun convertible with a manual Gearbox and NA engine. The Miata and the Spyder are the answer. The Spyder is the more serious car, can do 300kmh without any problems all day long. The gearings are to long? Don’t buy a race car for slow driving, get the Miata.

I did the Soul Performance tune on my 718 Spyder along with full exhaust and OAP’s (with BMC Filters) it’s definitely a little quicker but it’s not night and day. Supposedly 40HP bump
Haven't watched yet but the gear box ruins this car. Buddy of mine has one and it's a fucking SNOOZE to drive on the street. Top of third gear is nearly 120 mph. Doesn't have enough power to be interesting at lower RPMs. In typical Porsche fashion, it isn't playful like a Miata to toss around at legal speeds either. Porsche built a car that is all about the top end...that's essentially illegal to wind out on the street. Biggest example of "don't meet your hero's" I've ever had. I wanted one for so long. Maybe the 987.2 Spyder is better, I don't know.
Yes, the 718 GTS 4.0 was my dream car for a long time. I got to drive one and the handling, grip, and balance was incredible, better than another car I have ever driven, including a base 992.1 Carrera 2. However I found it too small, too loud, and too harsh. The power down below 4000rpm is just anemic and doesn't come really come alive until around 7,000rpm. I like the engine sound of the base 922 911 Carrera without sports exhaust better, the engine response is much better, and overall it is just much nicer and more refined and it still handles really well. Driving the base 992 911 Carrera on the same canyon course, I much preferred the 911, despite going into the test thinking I was going to like the 718 better.
Interesting. I went for the Boxster GTS 2.5 pdk and 987.1 cayman s manual for the same price 2 for 1 and I enjoy the driving experience of both cars 4 years later. Reading reviews like this is interesting because I haven’t had an opportunity to drive the 4 liter yet
The complaint about the gearing is unoriginal and played out at this point. Most modern manual transmissions a have long gearing nowadays and even older cars but because it's one of the few faults of this car that's all people complain about but somehow other cars get a pass? Is the gearing ideal? No. Is it a good manual? Yes. Most of the time driving on the streets normally there's still plenty of opportunities to shift cause your not shifting at redline all the time, you still get the enjoy the analog feeling of the car, great steering and immense handling. This engine still has plenty of grunt down low. Sure it's not the fastest thing but if break neck speeds is if that's what your looking for your completely missing the point of this car. Most modern cars are soooo fast and capable there's no way to enjoy any of them at legal speeds on the street so yeah if you want a playful car with lower limits that you can enjoy at street legal speeds you have plenty of choices with the miata and gr86/brz. Bottom line if somehow the gearing is a deal breaker for you, you can modify the gearset but otherwise you're missing out of one of the best drivers cars available.
I couldn’t justify keeping my 718 spyder as a daily…it was kinda silly commuting in this car. I love the lower limits and playability of the BRZ and Miata. My golf R is now the daily. I have 3 cars for less than the price of one 718 Spyder.
@@joby602 won’t catch me dead tuning some random old hot hatch with COBB, let alone a six figure porsche. Worst tuners ever. With a car like that, go to a dedicated Porsche race shop.
The Numeric shifter mod fixes the feel of the gear shifts ($750+labor) and DeMan Motorsports has a shorter gearing option for the 718 ($8750 installed). Over $10k to get the shifter and gearing 'fixed', but might be worth it on a car like the 718 Spyder
Strut front/rear may be an issue on track if you're an advanced driver (I haven't tried a GT4/Spyder on track yet), but at canyons speeds I really can't find fault with 981/982 suspension.
@@Zygrene Im really not sure what “issue” might be on track. They are very very fast in proper hands. Especially after good alignment and tires. 99.9% of drivers wont get into the limit of the car. People like to compare brochure quotes and not real world abilities and their (mostly poor) skills. Even my “poor” 718S is 997RS fast on track with just A052 and alignment.

Driving the base 992 911 Carrera on the same canyon course, I much preferred the 911, despite going into the test thinking I was going to like the 718 better.
good view👍🏻
Roughly same price for a lot more performance (but no manual) is the C8 Z06.
who pays this much for a porsche and then go gets it tuned by COBB...
Why not?
@@joby602 won’t catch me dead tuning some random old hot hatch with COBB, let alone a six figure porsche. Worst tuners ever. With a car like that, go to a dedicated Porsche race shop.
Yeah that 1st and 2nd gear are obnoxiously long. It’s the first time on video I could notice.
3rd is insanely long (190kmh, aprox. 115mph)
My C7 Grand Sport does 150mph in 4th, so what you complaining about.
@@hasonlavajunk9774your C7 has 6.2L of displacement and 2 more cylinders with a lot more torque with a much lower redline and overall powerband.
@@augustortiz they both reach 0-100 mph in the same time. Same long gears. Not a legit complaint when all fast cars have long gears.
Bad seats, bad gearing, bad shifter. S2000 seems like more fun.
I can’t believe these still have rear struts and such long gears. It’s a shame because they’re perfect otherwise.
It's a cool car but the roof looks like a tent
McLaren 570
Mcpherson front and rear is what kills this car for me
its works very well, I doubt you will notice any problem or limit of this technical solution
Have you tried it and it let you down?
All reviewers whine about 2nd gear. It's a great car with a great manual and the gears are fine for all around driving. If you want to shift more buy a miata.
The gears are stupid long and it makes the car feel slower too. Take it from me as an owner.
Agree. I OWN A 718 SPYDER. I’m not a reviewer. The gearing is no problem
